    Spring is near and so is outdoor gardening! One common mistake is starting a particular kind of garden after seeing it on social media. While we’re all tempted by a picture perfect garden in a photo, it’s important to consider what type of garden really addresses our needs. I hope this video will help you decide.

    You covered a huge amount in a brief video. Brava! I've used a combination of these methods but cost is a real factor for me. I've built seven raised beds myself from lumber and have purchased two steel fire rings (galvanized steel) to use as raised beds. If mice, voles, squirrels, etc are a problem, it's always smart to lay a barrier of high quality rat wire on the leveled ground before you place and fill your raised beds. The hugelkultur method you mentioned (filling the base with logs, torn cardboard, yard trimmings, etc. is economical and works well. One key among all the methods is to improve your soil constantly by adding compost and using crop rotation. You hit the highlights, so thank you. I look forward to watching more of your videos, since I'm a new subscriber. I really appreciate that your videos are brief and to the point. Thank you!

      Thanks for your comments and for subscribing. I hope I managed to keep it understandable. It was a LOT of information to cover. I love hearing about creative solutions like your fire rings. My dad is super handy and builds interesting beds like you have. Great point about the wire for moles. I have it under all of mine. Last year they were out of stock all season here, so I tried a cheap plastic for a couple of new ones and the moles wreaked havoc underneath and the bed kind of collapsed underneath. I had to redo them this year with the sturdy wire I normally use since it finally came back in stock.

    All true Val !! I would say, without fertilizer no dig, took a while to perform for us(season). But that was a result of low quality compost we unknowingly bought.
    Cheers 🌱🌱🌱

    Great video Valerie.. I love to grow our peppers in buckets because you can move them around and bring them in to overwinter them.
    My raised beds are my favorite. 🌱

    another inspirational vid Valerie, I laughed at the mole...an "old hand" told me many moons ago to harvest mole hills..they only dig in the richest, and most consistent soil, I've been doing this for several years now and have saved a fortune, there's no mole emoji 😔, so here's a hedgehog instead 🦔😊

      @NowGardening  Před rokem +1

      Haha I love that. Who knew there was a hedgehog emoji! I harvest moles' dirt too and isn't it amazing how good it is? It also makes me a little less annoyed with them causing so much trouble in my yard!

    I built 3 new no-dig beds in the fall, all I did was aerate the soil with my pitchfork and then added some amendments and layered compost right on the soil( I didn't use cardboard because I didn't build them on top of existing vegetation) I've already filled 1 with potatoes and another with mixed beans and strawberries. These beds costed me nothing but labor to build sense I used homemade compost.
    I also make my own amendments too

      Great point, Elle. Most of us can’t have everything at once and have to plan for it slowly over time. I add to my garden each year to keep the cost (and work load) under control.

    I had to clear some weeds, vines, and sticks etc from my yard. I will be building a raised bed soon, but decided against using the materials I cleared as a filler because I was worried about weeds growing from it, and some of the sticks looked diseased. Have you had any disease or weed issues from filling your beds with yard waste?

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Před rokem +1

      Hi Sue. First and foremost, anything I put in is covered with about at least 18 inches of soil. I use leaves, sticks, grass, etc., but never intentionally put weeds in as filler because many can survive without light and will still make it up to the surface. I actually have had a few weeds grow up through the wire mole protection from the ground underneath of my tall raised beds (approx. 45inches)! Not many, but it’s still mind-blowing! As for grass though, no worries. As to your question about diseased materials, stay away from those too. I won’t put in anything that didn’t die of « natural » causes or anything that seems suspicious. Hope this helps

      @@NowGardening Thanks for the response. Pretty much validates what I was thinking, so I am glad I am taking that approach. Good luck with the moles this year 🌱👍😎
