    I totally agree, as a black woman I found that there are no jobs for anyone. The salaries in Atlanta are low and the city is overpopulated. A simple bachelors degree isn't good enough. People think Atlanta is the place to flourish but there are no good jobs there, which is why I was forced to move.

    I started to move to Atlanta after college. I finally decided that if Tallahassee was too cold in the winter for me, Atlanta was certainly out of the question! I moved to the Tampa Bay area that had a much warmer climate. I did well and always had a good job. I later moved to Miami to do an internship to complete my graduate degree. When I graduated I still had not found employment. I took my ass down to the day labor place. I worked on a construction site for three months before I found a job in my field. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to take care of business! No one is above doing an honest days work.

    Brother, you ain't neva lie. But those issues aren't indigenous to the gay, Black, male, population of Atlanta. Your experience in Atlanta is a microcosm of what's going on with the gay population at large. It's all about esoterics and maintaining a façade; no substance. I appreciate your outspokenness!

    I just have to say this about Atlanta. It's not about what you know, it's who you know. I'm from Alabama/Georgia line. Compared to where I'm from jobs and careers in Georgia is way better. It's a plac if you handle your responsibilities. It took me a month to find a job with no experience in that field making 18/hr. I put in for jobs everyday. Since starting June 5th, I have a apt, new car and 0 friends. You have to be responsible to live in this city and mature. Know better you do better.

    Social media allows you to tell people the story you want to tell. You can be dirt poor, but hey, if you share a whole bunch of pictures of you posing next to nice cars(that you don't really own)or carrying nice purses(that you borrowed) or nice clothes(that you borrowed or intend to return to the store after wearing them once), you can make people think you're a baller.

    Walter you are telling the truth, I was in the military for 8 years so when I got out of the military I was very nieve about the gay community in general and who and what to watch out for. I honestly thought that the community of guys would be great because I didn't know what the community was about. So I try to fit in and got caught up thinking that that was the way to gay men act and behave. Maybe I surrounded myself with the wrong people but it seemed liked those were the only type that were out to speak to. I became something I wasn't and struggled with my identity as a gay man. Finally I left and moved to another mecca and it wasn't any better. So I moved back up north to be around family and came to terms with who I am as man. Being gay doesn't define me. Walter thank you for your honesty.

    Walter, this is all very true. I have not heard the term rif raf simce a kid LoL. Atlanta has a thriving job market but getting hired is always harder for black men in any part of the country. Especially good paying jobs. Google if you don't believe that.
    Walter, spot on advice to start your own business in ATL. don't depend on getting hired unless you want to make 12 bucks an hour and work 80 hours a week to pay bills. I moved to ATL armed with a masters degree and solid work experience. i got one job offer from Amazon for 11 bucks an hour in their distribution center in College Park. mind you I made six figures in previous jobs. I left ATL in less than a year. very difficult city to do well unless you get lucky and land a good job or start your own gig. a lot of the "lights turned off folks" are struggling with few options but stay because they want want to have a good time partying. that's a very true fact. folks need to realize that minimum wage or even 15 bucks an hour is not sustainable. rents are going up not down, food prices are up, Georgia power charges quite a bit to keep the lights on, transpo costs, all that takes a good salary. not to mention health care. Georgia is one of the 19 states that did not accept Obama care funding back in 2009 so if you have health needs or need emergency care you better have health insurance. its a huge risk if if your out of work with no benefits. one unexpected event and you can be done with. not a good situation and best option is not to stay and wait for a Jay Z moment. be realistic and take steps to improve your situation. The drugs and partying are temporary escape mechanisms from the harsh reality of having to make good choices that may save your soul in the long run. good stuff Walter.

I used to (and still do) see young Black gay men in their 20s taking all these pics in 5 ⭐️ hotels, high-rise condos, they take pics trying on $1500 shoes. They put model, personal trainer and their email on their bio. But I found out that many of them are trying to be escorts/hoes. They travel to all the major party cities (L.A., NYC, Miami, Atlanta, and Houston). Some even go abroad. Yes some are physically attractive and have beautiful bodies. But they are mean and nasty. They choose their friends based on physical appearance and all this shallow stuff. Here I am working everyday on a legal and legit job I've been on dam near 12 years trying to keep the ends met and overlapping. I have never been to Atlanta but will visit soon. I have had a job since I was 12 years old, the summer between my junior and senior year I worked in a nursing home here in my home town. After high school I worked there again that summer. I was 17 swept off my feet by a 37 year old married man. Put college off for 2 years until I realized this relationship was a living hell. I had a choice between Atlanta and Houston chose Houston, thank goodness. Because of my nursing home experience , got a great job in one of the best hospitals downtown Houston moved to the YMCA registered for school, U of H. then to a Nursing program. I have lived all over the world and recently retired. Thank this Universe I learned from that first relationship that I had to take care of myself it matured me at 19 that gay life and night life could drag you down, it was the same in the gay community in my home town (Down Low) and Houston, people I partied with in the 70's ( For me one weekend a month) that are still alive are still living in the same conditions and those who still can are still hanging out in bars living in rented rooms. I made a long story short to say I do hope someone is listening to you because all the young gay people and some of the old ones are trying to live that reality show life here in my home town, Stealing, lying, cheating in order to wear the latest fashions and hit the bars every night with no job or selling and using drugs Living with mom or dad or sister or brother on the streets, and in and out of jail every month. It is so sad! And they have no problem asking you for money if you just say hello!! I find it strange too Walter that wherever I go I see NO BLACK MEN working in these businesses. You see plenty of black women and of course, whites, Asians, etc., but no brothers. Why is this? Is it simply because young black men are largely unemployable (drug problems, etc) or is there something else going on. I think it is a combination of many things for sure. But there is one component of this huge problem that our people fail to address correctly or even admit - there is a systematic attempt to block and deny the efforts and progress of young black men in this country. But like you said, we must be willing to hustle to keep it together.

      Dexter Smith I see plenty of middle aged Black American men in jobs and definitely plenty of Black African men working for the city government, state government, county government, federal government, hospitals, especially Dekalb Medical Center, VA Hospital, Emory, Grady, Piedmont, Kaiser, plenty of Honda Certified Mechanics and other Mechanics, Tractor Trailer Drivers, Cable TV and Dish Network Installation Technicians etc.
      However, I don't see alot of younger Black American men working. There's even been that generational shift in my family. The older Black American men worked and held down jobs till retirement. Both my dad and brothers retired from their jobs and my cousin is about to retire but these younger ones won't hold down a job.
      I can tell you as a Black American woman who was once in the dating scene, younger Black American men aren't doing anything, don't wanna work, wanna make the most money with the least labor intensive mode, want the woman to do everything etc. I can't tell you the number of Black American men I met who were trying to be producers and didn't have a stable job. And they would all say the same damn thing.....they didn't wanna work for nobody. But hell, be realistic and get something stable or get your behind out of the dating scene. Work on the betterment of your situation!!
      I'm also noticing now, Black American men are driving for Lyft and Uber because once again they say they don't wanna work for anybody. I've come to the conclusion, this younger generation of Black American men are lazy and don't want real jobs. The older generation of Black American are fine.

    • @dextersmithbsee
      @dextersmithbsee Před 7 lety +2

      You make a very important distinction Lizzie Beth, but isn't it the younger generation that will carry the torch forward? The older guys will retire someday, so we need young black men to become pick up the baton and run. How do we educate the young black men of the current generation to become successful and productive in our society? And we also shouldn't stifle their entrepreneurial spirits. We need a heck of a lot more independent, successful, young black businessmen in our communities. We have a ton of athletes who young blacks look up to, but they live far, far away. And contribute almost nothing to the daily affairs in say, Decatur, GA. We need to re-educate ourselves to create and to look up to the heroes amongst us.

    You are on point with this one fam. I am Georgia born and bred and live on the southside of Atl. I know you mainly speak about the gay male community but in general there are ppl here that arent about anything but partying. I would hate to get into my 60s and look back to see what I did with my life just to find I had sex, did, drugs and partied it away. I do notice the men are more reckless than the women but both put up that facade of living a glamorous life when they are barely surviving.

    Walter, as a young black gay man myself, much of your sentiment I agree with; there is a prevailing segment of black gay culture [gay culture at large if we're honest] that is indeed reckless and morally base and in that case such a culture prohibits one from leading a productive life, in many ways.
    However, when it comes to young black men, generally, and employment in this country, no less Atlanta, I think your judgements are misplaced. They are the least employable demographic in the US; largely due to negative preconceptions. There's a lot of data on this, data that controls for pre-judgement.
    Also, most entrepreneurial attempts fail; most of them. There's data on this too. The most honest reading of our predicament is that the odds are structurally stacked against us. We should be of help where we can. We should be a community.
    Your hard-feelings for the community are understandable, just off-base in this case.

    • @aLifeThatThrives
      @aLifeThatThrives Před 7 lety +1

      I don't disagree. I think it's appropriate to look at, what can be called 'the black gay problem' or larger 'the gay problem' as a matrix or synergy of social and cultural forces that act upon one's sense of personal virtue. I think a more wholistic criticism is most productive, which is to say, it can make for a more persuasive argument.

    I was planning to move to Atlanta from Chicago, changed my mind quickly. I stayed there in the summer with friends. while there I applied applied and applied for jobs... no answer. I was surprised by that. The health care is horrendous. Social services are horrendous and non-existent.
    After my experience.., I changed my mind and went back to the suburbs of Chicago. My friends were not happy that I didn't stay but I explained to them. I need to have money, a job, and family and or a strong support system to help me fall back on if I get in financial trouble. I explained that I'm not ready or prepared to live here.
    I am not happy. It's been 1.5 years, I finally got a call from 1 employer.....( A year and a half later!!!!!! lol).
    I am so glad that I visited first and researched first because if I didn't, I don't even want to think about how I would have suffered.

I feel like it is that way everywhere lots of people want to be. people need to be open to living in some where like north Dakota or Nebraska. not fun but wide open job markets. save then go back to the place you want to be. that's what I have done. now I will be able to pay off a house in Savannah or Jacksonville in less than 5 years.

    Honestly some people live a minimalistic life so they CAN travel, party, and splurge. Caucasian people do it all the time. Their homes might not be extravagant, but that's because they save their money so they can travel and do things they like to do. I'm not saying that this is what the gay men that Walter is referring to are doing, but I had to insert that perspective

    Great video Walter. I live in CT and I want to relocate, but I'm not gonna move blindly. I currently work in behavioral health and have 2 other jobs that will enable me to get enough money to fund a move. My job has locations in the very areas I'm considering. When the top comes, hopefully there will be a position that qualify for that I can apply to, get offered, and accept in order for a smooth transition.
