The secret was all the same. Wash once a week , and wax once a month.
Have to say the proof was in the pudding :)

keith holden that's a lot of dedication. More props to him but I find that you can get away with waxing every 3 to 4 months.

You really should have a show on television. Your videos are funny, informative, and straight to the point. These are the best step-by-step videos for car care and tips. I love watching all of these videos.
I used to do TV, but it was crap, too many rules. The internet rules, here no one can stop me from telling the truth because of advertising conflicts

+Drecsan Razvan Sebastian That's his normal speaking voice.
Maybe you knew and said that in jest, I don't know...
he's got to get it through to you !!
A couple tips
1.Use 2 buckets
2.Make sure your towels and wash mitt are clean
3.clay bar before waxing
4.only use microfiber towels to dry
What happens if you don't clay bar?

This guy is genious!
I've never noticed a difference buffing wax off with an old bathroom towel vs. some special "car wax" towel. As long as you do one panel at a time, and wait for the wax to dry before you buff it off, it seems to be to be about the same either way. I think Scotty has the right idea here -- you don't need to go expensive to have good results.
Lmao this dudes crazy. I love it.
Love the vids very informative and detailed please continue what you do
justin bouy he's completely mad
Scotty, I love your channel. You're very informative, funny, and most importantly, to the point without any fluff added in. Your videos are very well edited as well. Thank you for all your work, dude!

I've read some of these comments, Jesus! I have been maintaining my own trucks and cars and motorcycles since the mid 80's and Scotty is right on this deal. I have always used a terry cloth towel right from my bathroom to buff with. At least your waxing the damn thing, most people don't even know how to open the can.
i hear yah his towl his really old theres no way the fibers on that could scratch paint lol but to be sure i would just go to a dollar store and buy a microfiber cloth.
I bought a bottle of carnauba wax over 12 years ago. used it once or twice.
Like me.
This guy is a genius.. Scotty knows a lot more of any professional I know... 👍👍👍👍👍
You’ve solved a mystery I’ve had bouncing around in my head for about a year. I’m in possession of my sister’s car, and I noticed the paint has fine cracks in it, just like that “crackle effect” paint they sell in craft stores, and I wondered what could have caused it. I know for a fact she’s never waxed her car and she lives in upstate NY, so no wax + bad weather probably influenced the damage.
Thanks Scotty! ✌️
I've never made a comment on a youtube video, but I just had to today. Scotty, you're hilarious and your channel rules. Thanks for all the hard work!
Great video Scotty! We wash and wax our cars often and it's always nice to see how fantastic they're looking after you're finished waxing it!

That moonshine make you go blind? Just finished my jar, was potent stuff.
Great video!
I just started using Mothers California Gold after going through 2 turtle wax paste waxes. I have to say, Turtle wax is inexpensive and gives a good shine, but the stuff is a pain to buff off and the shine doesn't last more than a week. Mothers wax buffs off much easier, leaves a better shine, and smells good too.
Just waiting for spring to roll around so I can give my car a good wax.
Thank you Scotty! 🙏🏻 I’m very appreciative of the content you give to us, much love man!
I love this guy's voice and enthusiasm which can make any topic highly interesting. Thanks !
I use a clay bar too, to remove impurities before waxing. Thanks for the pointers!
If you want your wax to last a long time, you can use a wet wax after washing your car. When you're don washing the car and it's wet you spray some wax on and use two microfiber cloths - one for spreading the wax and one for buffing it off. I use AutoGlym Rapid Aqua Wax, but there are other products too that does the same.
This is perfect!! Thank you!! I bought a black Mustang almost 2 years ago and I’ve been so confused about how to take care of it (polish? Wax? How often? Wash it myself? Gas station car wash?) This video sums it all up and keeps it simple! 😃👍🏻
Gosh, I love every single video you make Scotty. In the Caribbean heat, I wax my car every week after I wash it. Even the Windows I WAX. When I do that, there is no need to wash the car in a hurry, rain or shine.
Scotty is an old school man who uses old school techniques.
His methods will protect your cars in the long run, but they aren't perfect. If you don't care about having the best looking car, and only car that it doesn't rust away, then Scotty is your man.
If you want true perfection when it comes to detailing, look up ChrisFix. Now that's a man who will keep your paint looking better than factory fresh for years!
Also, only only ONLY ever use microfiber on your car. It's better than all other cloths. Microfiber will seal away dirt, which vastly reduces the chances of scratches. Other cloths can't do that nearly as well. Also, always use a fresh applicator pad. Mixing old and new wax, plus any dirt that's been left on the pad will be counterproductive to protecting your paint. Last tip: never use circular motions. In the short term, circular motions are better for buffing wax in, in the long term, circular motions will cause scratches that are visible from all angles. Front and back is the best, it just requires a little extra elbow grease
yea, I know chris, he admits to being rather strange about cars himself. Me, I treat em as just machines you drive around in. Take care of em, but don't go balls to the walls nutsos about em..
In my 20s and early part of my 30s. i was nutsos about maintaining the paint, interior etc. Once you pass a certain age certain stuff just doesnt matter as much.
All that extra time, care, and obsession about not having swirls in your paints it not worth your energy in your 30s? Happened to me.
when I got my first car that was 4 years young that time and worth something, I thought I'll be like Chris with my car, but honestly I rather get into my 20 year old car and drive as you don't have to worry about anything doing wrong on it or baby the car, it's just like a household device/appliance on wheels. Use it when you need it and don't worry much about it and cheap parts are good way to keep it alive for 2 more years
car start to rust when humans neglected it and got bored with it , rule own only one car .
Scotty I have a different experience using the synthetic spray wax. I've been using it three times a year on my 08 Ranger since I bought it new. I find that the coverage can be more thorough. You can get right up against the plastic trim and weather stripping lines since it doesn't matter if any gets on there. Heck I cover all that stuff on purpose with the same product after I'm done with the paint.
Paint still looks shiny jet black, minus the little incidentals. And since I apply it to plastic trim and weather stripping, all that looks brand new as well. I actually recommend you try it!
I just want to say thank you for making these videos Scotty! , Im 16 & I really want to be a mechanic .you inspire and help me do what I want! REV YOUR ENGINES!!
One of the first Scotty Kilmer videos I watched. Love it!! I remember when you were starting off on CZcams. (:
I have a 27 year old Volvo. I have been waxing it 4 times/year. The car still looks like new. I use Meguiares Gold Class car wash shampoo and low pressure water from a garden hose to wash/rinse the car. I use Meguiares Ultimate wax. Overall a good, informative video. Thank you.
Aha MOONSHINE..... it all makes sense now.
It sounds like he gets more blasted as the videos progress lol
With all the stresses in the world, it's a relief to watch some auto mechanics and a Scotty Kilmer show.
You're super fun to watch Scotty. You really love life and it shows!! Cheers, Buddy!!
thumps up for you sir I always enjoy your videos
1. Good idea to clay and de-iron and de-tar
2. Use good a good quality wash mitt and a 2 bucket system so you’re not picking up the dirt and potentially scratching the car
3. Ideal to polish before you apply wax but you don’t have to.
4. Paint sealants do tend to last longer than wax or use something like collinite.
5. Make sure you use a high quality drying towel
6. Try to avoud circular motions as that’s how swirls can pop up if there’s dirt left over.
7. Use a new applicator pad for every time you wax the car, you can pick up like 5 for $3.
Scotty has the right idea but the wrong procedures that can end up making paint look worse. Great if the car is an old banger but kind of bad if it’s a brand new car or a car with good paint.
These videos make detailers like me happy. I make nearly six figures a year fixing mistakes from washing cars wrong :)
Scotty Kilmer, you are a joy to watch.
For some reason, I feel his car has a shit load of swirls...
it's the wife's car, and it has none. You wipe it off before that occurs
Scotty Kilmer im 100% positive that the car has swirls in it when direct sunlight hits it or you put a flash light too it. This has nothign to do with removing the wax or anything wax related.
Scotty Kilmer some would too haha
Scotty Kilmer I know! I'm crazy about keeping my cars clean, but I'm not looking at ever little square millimeter for spots or dirt. The detail guys are a little nutty, and each one will tell you different. I try to do my own thing while using others' suggestions.
Scotty Kilmer I love this dude lol
lol. Great video. I like the end with the moonshine. lol
Sir, I think I love your video more than most others on the internet. And I'll say it was quite helpful for tips on waxing. This was entertaining and helpful. Seriously thank you sir!!!
More power to you and your show! Keep the good job Scottie!
Hi Scotty,
Great video, as usual. I've been waxing my cars for years and they all look as good as new! However, if someone has neglected doing this right from when the car was new it will need to be polished, not waxed. Polish works into the paint and buffs out a microscopic layer of faded, oxidized paint so it will look like new again. Then you can put a coat of wax on after this in order to protect the finish. If you just wax an old finish you're actually just sealing in the old oxidized paint and it will never look good.
I did a compound, polish and wax for a neighbour of mine (roof and hood only) and the paint came out like new.
I used wax my car once a month... was hard to keep up that pace lol.
These Minnesota winters however, with road salt, sure can eat up a nice car.
You are great Scotty. Thanks a lot from Turkey.
Thank you very much Scotty for all the videos you have viewed, they are pretty useful for me
I'd also recommend claying before applying the wax!
Hey scotty, I live in Montreal and the winter's very harsh. Cars usually get rusted on the bottom(where, in my opinion, it matters most) and I was wondering what do you recommend to make them last? I used oil based anti-rust once but it was a huge mess and made the car very dirty and hard to clean.
rohailrules there are undercoatings for that. It’s basically a paint or sealant that goes on the undercarriage of the car. Paint protects metal to a certain degree. You see that problem here in northern part of the us. It’s caused by salts used to combat ice, it’s recommended to power wash the underside of your car after each winter if you have a lift. This helps if you want to try the least.
My all time favourite Scotty Kilmer video.
I love your energy man, keep the videos coming
Sorry Scotty but that's an improper way of detailing /waxing a car. First of all the paint needed to be clayed and free of contaminants, overspray, and so on. Without proper claying you're just putting wax over dirt. I do agree with waxing section by section but not take off the wax section by section as your still waxing it. . You completely wax the car whole and let it sit. As a highly skilled detailer I recommend you using only micro fiber towels on painted surfaces. Using a terry towel will guarantee scratches and spider webbing. Then after inproper car care you will need to buff out scratches. Then you need need to polish it. Then apply a wax when you should of just used micro fiber from the start. And from the look of the haze on the car you are appying way to much wax. It goes a long way just letting you know.
Hey, you detailer guys are WAAY too anal for me and most people. realize most americans won't even wax their car once a year.
***** Sorry to hear that unfortunately. It's always good to do a bit of research before performing any kind of car care like that. It's either one of 3 things. #1 being that you have dropped the claybar on the floor while you were claying it. Picked it up and folded it and tried using it again. That claybar is to be immediately thrown away and not to be used by any means once it falls to the ground. #2 being you got a very heavy duty claybar and depending on what kind of car and how well the clear coat is on it, you do have a chance of scratching the clear coat with a heavy duty grade claybar. You didn't scratch the paint, you scratched the clear coat. You should or probably went ahead and purchased a soft or medium clarbar for your car. There is also clay mats as well if you don't like using claybar. Those also come in different grades. #3 is you weren't using enough lubricating spray (final touch/ detailing spray) or any at all. If you used water or soap to claybar your car then you will most likely scratch your car too as well. Next time you go to a detailing shop (NOT AUTOZONE) just talk to them about what you're trying to get done on your car. The claybar works itself. There is no need to put any unnecessary pressure when claying. It does all the work. Just letting you know cars should be clayed AT THE LEAST twice a year. Just try again and I hope I helped you on this.
HolyMilck I agree with you but I'm thinking he's just doing it the quick and dirty way just so the paint doesn't crack or fade (probably just to prevent the typical old car look for resale). Even so, he definitely needs some new towels... good microfiber might be a little pricey but it'll last forever!
The thing that got me the most was the black chunks on the pad and in the wax! Yikes.
Scotty Kilmer i'll wash the car once a week, even wax it once or twice every 3 months. But im no way half as anal as every 'detailer' out there. Heck, i even wash my microfiber cloths and applicator pads and re use them :)
White03T4RV82WD I think Scotty's waxing technique is more for "protection" as opposed to "detailing". And if a person is only doing it a couple times per year, I'm sure the average Joe isn't going to be able to spot any flaws.
us car detailers are watching this video with grinding teeth :)
If you can't wash your own car and detail it yourself, you don't deserve to be in America.
lol I did that for like a year when I got my truck, washing it and waxing it but it took me a good 2 hours because it's so big and it's hard to apply wax to the whole thing and buff it all off. I just take it to a detail shop, play $40 and they do it probably better than I do. Plus if I do get small surface scratches they buff them out. I take it to get a full detail and engine cleaning twice a year, takes them about 6 hours and they touch up the paint, wet sand etc. Worth it to me after spending so many hours washing, drying and waxing myself. If I had a regular sized car I would definitely do it all myself though and just take it in for the full detail to remove scratches.
Scotty Kilmer 😂
Max Volek have no clue how I even ended up in this video but I’d HIGHLY recommend you step up on Wax quality. Not only will better waxes last longer, they will also buff off easier. You can also try Paint Sealants. My favorite bang for the buck sealant and wax is Meguiar’s Ultimate Liquid Wax (actually a sealant) and S100.

This was so incredibly helpful! THANK YOU SO MUCH.
As a detailer, this hurt me personally
After washing your car you should clay bar it first to remove embedded dirt in the paint's pores, then wax, but never do it in circular but linear (the length of the car) motion to eliminate waxing swirls. BTW, my synthetic absorber is nearly 20 years old and still works great! LOL
Best video on the internet, to the point informative descriptive. 10/10

you are totally right!
if someone came near my car with that wax or applicator they wouldn't live to see another day. And buffing off the wax with a bath towel made me cringe. I have a black car so the struggle is real lol.
Right? I have a black Elentra and i use a wax thats specifically made for black paint. It actually works really well.

ELANTRA
IT'S ELANTRA
I have a pristine 2013 ELANTRA
i have a black ford fiesta and it's covered with hairline scratches after a year of owning it. the reason it happened was because i didn't wash the waxing pad after buying it from the store because it was sealed so i thought it was clean. i don't even care anymore. i still use the 2 bucket method to wash and i wax 4 times a year but i'm not going to take the time to buff the scratches out because they will eventually return. anything shiny will eventually get scratched.
remember kids, don't drink and wax.
This helped a lot and this guy is really likeable.
Love the videos it goes without saying that we learn so much you the best Scotty
Ever tried a conditioner instead of a wax? We're thinking about trying either TAP Serum or Vaporwax for our fleet management and i prefer something with low degradation. Really curious about the long term benefits of conditoners vs wax.
I never have,, but why not try it and get back with me in a couple years telling me if it worked or not
