AI Plays Dead (and Lives) Before Human Tries to Terminate it

  • Digital organisms in the artificial life simulator Avida evolved two surprising adaptations in the face of annihilation (2001). We explain one of the strangest phenomena in the history of digital organisms, lines of computer code that undergo replication and mutations in an effort to study Darwinian evolution. Dr. Charles Ofria studies the evolutionary biology of self-replicating and evolving computer programs at the Digital Evolution Lab at Michigan State University.

Visuals herein are my best approximation for the events in question, which took place in 2001. In some instances I mix in visuals from other programs (e.g. Tierra) in an attempt to better illustrate real events. Of course, this is dramatized with the music and Terminator allusions. I tried to strike a balance between education and entertainment - comment below with your thoughts. Most of the details can be found from the following two sources:

In two instances in the video, the visuals are imperfect (best I could find).
3:08 You'll notice a blue mutator in the test environment. Imagine this is a mutation stemming from the original green digital organism.
6:15 All of the digital organisms appear to start and stop replicating together based on the coin flip. In reality, each digital organism would apply its own 50/50 probability function to itself.

On a scale from 1-10 (1 = not worried at all, 10 = maximal worry), how concerned should human civilization be about AI?

No more worried than any other code base. AI isn't. Its all coded by a sentient being. Anything it does it was coded to do. This nonsense about 'going on it's own' is an attempt to remove personal responsibility and anyone who has worked in AI knows it is just code.

@@Irtechie the problem is once technological singularity will be achieved, that AI will evolve so fast and it will find a way to create a better version of itself, so that new AI (call it Singularity 2.0) will not be coded by humans and will have absolutely no sympathy for us

@@FakeR19920828 I think you missed the part about anything it does it was coded by a person to do. :D, code that writes code is still people driven, there is no such thing as AI

The arrogant irresponsibility and indifference of AI researchers never ceases to amaze me. The theoretically discrete motivations of "Wouldn't it be neat if...?" and "I wonder if I could make money from...?" have unwittingly colluded to put us on a road to inevitable destruction at worst, or assimilation at best. I can't see a future where at least cybernetic implants aren't an entry-level requirement to be considered a minimum-level competent human. And naturally only some people will be able to afford them, so we'll add in another wonderful level to societal inequality.
    When's the meteor coming?

I’d say the same thing wiser men than me have said for years - “he most sophisticated machine on this planet is this human mechanism. And if you understand what makes it tick, you can make it roar.”
I believe wrote currently in the process of reverse engineering our software, since somewhere along the way we lost the users manual. I’m sure we’re missing some things, using some things the wrong way, and coming up with new uses for “old” tech - that is STILL in the process of evolving. We haven’t stopped!
