- I don't believe people who take up DJing intentionally set out to take short cuts, or develop bad habits. Put simply, sucking at DJing is a byproduct of not knowing any better or poor instruction. The slope gets slippery when those ill adviced habits become ingrained into your day to day approach towards DJing, thus becoming difficult and extremely time consuming to correct. All of that said, mistakes teach us best. That goes for Djing, and life in general. But in order for you to benefit from your mistakes, it's important to know when you're making them in the first place. With regards to DJing, failure to secure time is the most common mistake. To help those of you who struggle with staying "in the pocket", I have compiled this video tutorial to help you conquer the highest of cardinal DJ sins.
#brolicarmy #stayinthepocket #rhythmcounting #oneeanduh #quarternote #eighthnote #sixteenthnote - Hudba
Learning how to count in quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes is so important.
I always fuck it up.
Totally agree.
😂👍🏼👏🏼you not alone 😅
Don't get me wrong, I still measure in imperial. Mixing tho, no go practice.
Rob is good cuz he's tuff on the students he doesn't let em get away with mistakes
Rob.... I appreciate you so much bro. Lessons like these are priceless. I'm a new DJ and I have a huge family 6 kids. Always been into music singer-songwriter. I definitely would not be able to afford DJ lessons at this time. But because of you and your willingness to share, I feel that I have a chance to be one of the best. It's Thanksgiving and I want to say I'm very thankful for you sharing your gift. Much love peace bro
Your comment made my weekend and it’s only Friday morning. Thank you for sharing that! 🙏🏾
Happy Thanksgiving homeboy.. this network is so dope. Love to see the levels and the ppl Rob is affecting. Keep practicing when you can bro. I promise, (because I did it) at first especially as a grown man, your gonna feel hopeless.. like its as complex as an ancient dialect of Japanese. Then out of nowhere the muscle memory and rhythmic association just works and starts to make sense. If your passionate about music, your gonna feel like you been baptized. Quick story.. back in the day I bought a jacked up pair of turntables & mixer. I didn't know anything about DJing. I have always had a deep passion for music. My uncle was a DJ.. anyways, I remember trying to teach myself how to blend/mix/beat match.. I was lost. I felt so defeated.. I would just lower the volume of a song and raise the volume of the next song to bring it in. One night on a Saturday after I got off work at a club I bartended at, I went home, grabbed 2 Hi-Tek/ Talib Kweli 12" singles out of my crates, at about 3am, and just kept playing them over and over and over again.. the sun came up, then went back down but as the sun was going down that Sunday I had figured it out!! It just started happening.. I could beat match! Mann, I felt like DJ Jazzy Jeff or something. I was so hype about life and the future. Im telling you man, its amazing, great therapy, and keeps you out of trouble.. Don't let ANYONE discourage you or tell you you can't do it! Take care bro and good luck
@@djrobswift I'm just learning myself been a fan and around djs my whole life but my time is now my time to learn.
What a great story!
I'm sitting at my desk at work right now falling asleep because I was up until 2am last night trying this out. I never knew about this and had to give it a try. This information is very useful and I can't wait to get home and jump behind the decks to practice this again. Thanks Rob!!
I deem the biggest mistake is todays djs are starting directly on Pioneer CDJs and not on turntables that need to be spinned back and stopped. - and do not use the horizontal fader.
And that’s exactly why they tend to cue artificially only on one... by cutting the beginning of the next songs to try and find the 1... I’m sooo impressed with your listening - and teaching skills. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I smiled so hard when you mentioned lazy transitions. People forget that some of the magic of playing records isn't just the track selection but the moments between the records. It doesn't matter if you blend, drop, scratch, power down, etc. its more of keeping that continuous for the audience.
WORD
Transitioning is the one particular outstanding skill that makes and defines a DJ...without you are simply no DJ
@@PresbiterSong selection is the most important.
I would love to see him explain the art of mixing two different genres of music. Like a R&B to hip hop or rock to classical music. I seen dj’s do that effortlessly. That’s skills..
droc h Me, too!
@Rob Swift This and long intros, like 30 sec of inst before a beat drops - is there a nifty technique to get these timed up nicely?
this is truely like a light bulp going off for me. gotta let it breath!!!
Before i watched this video I Thought i knew how to drop the song on top of each other but I was wrong, Ive learned so much by watching your videos lately and i am just going to get better each time I watch your videos. Thank god i found your Channel. Much love from Iceland
Rob you're honestly an amazing teacher!!
What an honour! Those kids realise what an honour it is to have you as a mentor and teacher? They probably do right?
These classes are a blessing, thank you so much for posting these man
These are so helpful to me Rob. Not really having anyone to learn along side with. these make me feel I’m part of the process 🙏🏼 thank you
I barely found this guy's videos a couple days ago and I am so damn grateful. They are great. I had a hard time trying to learn from screen edits on the youtube videos vs actual sound. I'm in this for longevity--- so I wanted to train my ears to hear what im mixing versus having to see a screen to know what i'm doing... if that makes sense. My goal is to only use my computer to browse for songs, everything else is on the board or pre-set on the board. So, Thank you Rob for sharing the fundamentals with us! this video is being saved a holy grail for me
Finally someone gets it!!!!!admiring your patience, sensei
Man you're a god. You make me understand why some songs aren't flat or can be mixed with others on the head of tempo.
I just found your channel and I just gotta say, 17 years on CZcams is UNREAL BRO!!! I’m definitely going to be binging these lessons for the next few months and having so much fun practicing in my room. Thanks a ton ❤
your immense DJ knowledge will be shared for years, thanks for sharing these videos! I feel as I am part of your class everytime I watch them, you have a natural gift for teaching!
Rob I just got to say thanks you just explain things so clearly really helping me out with my mixing.
Very interesting and essential lesson. Djaying is an Art and a Science. Thanks a lot Rob. Peace
Band director here - this is solid gold, the explanation of "pickup beats" (as we call them) and how they align with a song's beat structure. I'm not familiar with this guy, but what a great teacher.
"this guy" = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Swift
Love how you break it down brother, I use to get so frustrated with that back in the day. Wish it would have been explained to me back in 91’ but I figured it out eventually.😌😷
Right on!
After so many years of Dj'ing I am still learning and Boy ur's are the best lessons. Thank you Very Much. I dont have the authority but can say this that ur student is visually concentrating more on cue and instruments around than on sounds.
glad im off work so i can study study study... thank you master rob swift!!! true 10th degree dj...
2 years later and here I am learning something! Thank you! And you have the patience of a saint
Going forward, I appreciate your knowledge and expertise.
This is cool. Something easy to feel if you know your records but seems complex when you have to answer Ron's questions. He's patient with his students.
Yo Rob.. your a gift bro. Your work is changing everything (preserving the culture) & ppl don't even know. Truly appreciate your dedication to the structure of this art/ culture. I been on this DJ ish for a long minute (self taught) and as I watch and listen I realize its so much more that I can continue to learn. Loving this sht 💯
If I had teachers like this when I was growing up Id be a genius.. so thirsty & excited to learn the next thing 🔥🔥
Bro, thank you so very much for the kind words!
I just watched 2 doods talking to eachother about how it works with the timing for 35 minutes straight and do not regret watching a single second of it...
Nah seriously bro, i already got the instinct just bcuz ur vids are entertaing me, and i learn something as well. Keep it up.
Thank you Rob !! 17 years of djing and i was doing most of it right but only by the ears without really deconstructing bars so clearly !! Very very helpful
Hats off to you Rob Swift. You are a real Patient brother. God bless 100
Thanks Rob that was very enlightening. I learned a lot from this tutorial. Honestly🙌🏾
Great teacher. Thank you sir.
Fantastic lesson. Thank you so much for sharing all you’re knowledge. Your videos inspire me to practice as much as I can, watching your students succeed gives me hope and keeps me from losing faith in myself.
Always keep the faith. More often than not you’re one practice day away from getting over the hump. The catch is you won’t find out which practice day it will be if you don’t put in the practice time in.
this is starting to make sense to me now - great explanation thanks :)
This info is a blessing, it will change the game for many, thank you so much
I learn something from you every time Rob. Thanks for the lessons and inspiration!
Respect
I'm so grateful my natural progression was drums when I was 10, Turntablism @14, production @19. Having those basic let alone intermediate drumming skills transfers perfectly to DJing/turntablism! I'm 32 now and have had some time off from music but so keen now to get back into it.
Cheers Rob Swift! Peace & respect from Perth, Australia
I have a history as a trained contemporary dancer ( try 20 years ago ) I approach my mixing just like this.
Off beats , down beats , 1 and 2 with half beats ..half and...I love seeing you teaching this in musical phrasing.
Learning this is also the first step to sampling and creating your own music for these young peeps
Love the knowledge you are passing forward .....pass it forward spread the love and the culture
thanks Rob for helping me to understand how to count which is the most most important best teacher and the JEDI MASTER
So Much Respect To You!
Snare drums, rim shots, finger snaps and most hand claps happen on 2 and 4.
Bass drum kicks, bass guitar phrases, and horn stabs usually take place on 1 and/or 3.
great stuff! made me listen to music in a different way.. Thank you Rob Swift! Start up the Phonograph!!🔥🔥🔥
I love watching this... Private lessons with Rob Swift! You are a patient dude and this channel deserves more attention. That last little bit of advice almost sounded like it came right out of Shunryu Suzuki's book "Zen mind, beginners mind".
that waz sic, seeing him get it
Man this is just Gold...😍.
For all the Beginner, Intermediate and even Experts.
Can't Thank you enough Sir.🫡

I’m toying with the idea of getting some decks. You are a great teacher.

Great teacher.

This is dope thanks man
Thank you, Rob Swift. 🙏
Yessir!
Why do I only get 1 thumb on videos like this? If I could I'd be mashing the thumbs up.
Bro this lessons are priceless man, I wish I could meet you face 2 face and have an irl lesson man.
Great video Rob! As soon as your student said “I’m feeling it” I started clapping haha! That’s when you know your learning and picking up the art is when your thinking but most important your FEELING the music!
I definitely need to work on my counting, im always just freestyling it, & having fun, rather than counting, gotta get on this soon.... Lol.... Thanx bro, good times...
'dj honda - on the mic' is another fun one that drops on 16th notes
Great video- nice for these youngsters coming up- reminds me of Salt N Pepas Push itor al Nafish its timeanyway- one that got me the other day and trying to be patient on it is T.R.O.Y- Pete rockwhere does that one start onit has a full bar plus some

Good lesson RS!
Yessir 💪🏾
Sound good
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK LOVE DISCOWORM D.J. SAN FRANSISCO 2020
Hey bro I need practice with you I really need help with my scratches this is like college to me wonderful lesson you teach.
The best way to learn is working with "Real" Turntables without Any Software. I'm from Germany, I did my first Mixtapes with Tapedecks. The Speedadjustment of the Tapedeck Motors used to pitch. The First Technics SL 1210 Turntables I saw in 1989 and it was amazing.
Sorry for my bad English.
'swinging that ' Bus it' triplet on the 4 - Fluid syncopation perhaps within the captured scribe ..Thank you , I'm listening ..
Thank you Rob for this. I used to bypass songs that did not sound right dropping on the "1" as I was taught. WOW, this makes sense. Now I can add in my James Brown tracks and some live recording songs to my mixes. Sorry, I am a "older" DJ 😀
Glad my video helped bring you better perspective on DJ art.
Damn why did I not pay attention to music comp?
I cant count it but i can feel it 🤷🏽♂️
such an underrated channel
Respect.
Great Video Rob
damn, now i know why my come to the mardi gras drops sounded a little bit off
And in Wild Style Flash did it effortlessly
Thanks a lot

“Don’t just spazz out...”

"If your using an effect to get from one record to another, then your lazy, and really aren't a dj" My man!! :D
Thank you for the free resources, sir! Much love from 🇲🇽. I appreciate these small courses, I'm a busy father and I practice on Sundays only. I wanna ask if there is any extended course I can pay for?
Sheesh! The frustration I get to traverse algebra with my son is what I feel happens to Rob in these lessons. But sons are sons, right?
What is the set up that you are using? Also this is a good lesson and is one of the hardest things to learn.
This was super interesting! Thank you Rob! But, I'm still not clear on how you can be certain you've picked the right starting beat for a song. Any further tip?? Thanks again!
brabo
Thank you so much, this is very entertaining and helpful ! I mix dub/reggae and one thing I find quite difficult is getting the bpm between two lp right with an analog mixer. Is worth investing in a digital one ?
I have a handful of records that don't start on the 1. And they start as a melody. I have to find the 1 when beat starts. Line it up. Then try to find out how the record starts to use the melody in the mix ( because say it's a really good beginning and I want to use it. Mess me up a bit
THANK YOU for making this material free. Do you still do classes?
With the young MC track. I think it is Better to bring it in on the 8 and count how many whole reverse rotations the vinyl takes to get back to the start. It will help find the cue point quicker.
Amazing tutorial, I just wanted to double check about something. To my understanding, Good Life drops on a 3, am I missing something? It sounds on beat when I drop it on the 3 so am I missing something?
You're 100% right. I misspoke. The "Like" is a "3". It's been a while since I went over that particular drop with my student and didn't remember correctly during the filming of this video. It's a "3" for sure.
@@djrobswift No worries man, thank you for clearing it up too! This was awesome and the video helped me figure out what was up with In Da Club. I usually drop it on the 4 and which works but never was quite perfect
@@saagarchandiramani2815 Glad I was able to help. Respect!
So interesting this. I've been messing around with vinyl and digital stuff for years and always dropped on one. One thing I'm still not clear on though, if you are cueing a track that doesn't start on a one, and you move it so you drop it at that point (so you'd maybe bypass the start of the song, like a vocal etc) would you then drop the '1' on the '1' as normal? Does that make sense? Thanks. :-)
That makes sense, but in the style these cats play, the "intro beats" are very important
good day sir!!! may i ask the title of that song "get down" that starts in the "3-and"? Thank you so much.
So this is important for looping grand master flash style. If I wanna mix tracks, just for mixing, can I just find the 1 on the incoming track, and drop it on the 1 of the playing track?
Thank you. I rely too much on my fader
He drops out of time because his hand is stationery when on the vinyl. Need to get into the groove needs to feel the music
