This is a tool-assisted speedrun of Donkey Kong Country 3, performed by Dooty, ElectroSpecter, and Tompa. For more details, visit TASvideos.org/2941S.html
man.. i LOVE this game. great memories. reminds me of those summer vacation days from school when i was a young Kid.. thank you for uploading this video...
On the hardest difficulty, the password TUFST was entered at the start, the game will remove all (Some exceptions) DK barrels in the game. Instead you always start a new level with both Kongs.
@mikesgtrs1 Usually, it's not possible to change where they appear while you are in the bonus game. So what you do is that you just check where the next banana will appear and then you try to get there as soon as you can. Sometimes the manipulation you get is really bad, which means you'll either have to delay going into the bonus or seven delay to enter the stage, in order to get a better manipulation.
When you play on the hardest difficulty (By writing in the TUFST cheat code at the beginning), all (With a few exceptions) DK barrels on the level are removed, as well as the midway barrels. Instead you start with both monkeys at the beginning of each level.
@HubbaBubba9849 the raw for the standard size encode you see here was 14.5 GB. I dont have the room on my HDD for a HD encode. Nothing stopping you encoding it yourself if you really want one in HD :-p
Pretty much. The main tools you use are Frame Advance and Save States. Frame Advance lets you record an input for every frame in the run. This game runs in 60 frames/second. Save States are used to fix erorrs and such you make, which is also how we knew where to be for the green bananas. You just play forward to see there they'll spawn, load the save state and run get to that point.
If you mean the kong following Dixie throughout the game, that's Kiddy Kong. Lankey Kong only appeared in Donkey Kong 64 but he did make some cameos in the Gameboy Advance version of this game.
@pixcalibur123 1) I didn't TAS this game, I'm just the guy who encoded the run. 2) the run is 1h 41mins, or 101 minutes 3) it took over 2 days to encode from start to finish, DKC games are codec intensive
It was the TUFST code, which unlocks the highest difficulty mode. This removes all (With some exceptions) DK-barrels and midway barrels in the game. It's the only way to get 105%.
Not really. Considering this is a Tool Assisted Speedrun, which is done by the help of slow motion gameplay and save states. So we knew where they would appear simply by making a save state, seeing where the next banana will be and then load the state.
I agree with you I love all three DKC games the problem with number 3 was the Engine was really starting to show it's age it's music was still amazing but it wasn't as memorable as the first two but i still listen to it to this ever day and third of all this came out about 8 months before n64 which really made things worse for the game but in all honesty I still play all DKC games to this very day %^&* modern conventions like halo and cod these games are amazing :)
When you use the TUFST cheat to enable hard mode all DK barrels (With some exceptions) will be removed from the levels. Instead you'll always start with both Kongs on every level.
@Tomtelala sorta figured that , its a shame they arent systematic LOL the amount of times ive lost the round not gettin there in time :-D - i know the game back to front but i can nver get quick times on those harder grab the banana ones
no, it's actually an in game cheat for hard mode, this means, it removes all the checkpoints and many DK barrels. In compensation, it gives you a nice 105% in your save file when you finish the game.
and, uh please, you guys that know what TAS is: don't be mean, try to explain and be nice, there's a lot of people that don't know what it is or what is possible. Try to explain and show to people how cool it is and not be just mean. No one was born knowing what TAS is and we are all people we need to learn and expand our knowledge instead of saying "salt" or " stupid" cmon let's be a better community.
It would be funny if the KONG-letters were required for 100%, because there is no G in Rocket Rush (starting at 1:31:00) for this version of the game :D.
how r you attracting the bananas to you in the bonus levels ? they all randomly appear but some reason you can get them straight away ! please explain how - cheers
How are you getting Dixie back at the end of the levels when you take hits? Is there like some glitch that lets you keep them with you if you finish fast enough or something?
I think I might know even not fully knowing it. It goes like this? Allowed to use resources as a tool to aid you through the levels? I think it goes like that.
The code "TUFST" was used in the beginning of the run to activate Hard Mode. This removes all (With some exceptions) DK barrels in the game and you always start with two monkeys. And for 5:14, I suggest you actually play the game first before commentating.
"Dixie, would you be a darl and baby sit Kiddy while you drive out K. Rool?
Oh, and his nap time's in 2 hours, so you best hurry."
been waiting for such a run of this game. great job on it and only in 77 minutes
man.. i LOVE this game. great memories. reminds me of those summer vacation days from school when i was a young Kid.. thank you for uploading this video...
This was great to watch. Good work!
Skipping that elephant in Murky Mill surprised me. Then again, it's a TAS. I also enjoyed the boss fights!

awesome run! Thank you for it!
Thanks for posting this!
This was uploaded on my birthday
I was born 18 december 1993
What a great TAS run
Congratulations, great player!
Very well done!
this game has awesome music
thanks for the encode
7.06 I used to love this level!
One of the best platformers ever!
and nearly 12 years later and its still over 8 minutes faster than, the huma WR insane.
Completion 105%
Wow, long ago I thought the game was over when I've beat the boss in the castle, now I see I still got much to do...

awsome game , all of the DKC games are in my opinion the best platformers ever made
That is an interesting speedrun.
@Tiago17avila That one is being worked on. But the progress is slow because it's very hard to optimise it.
I've been waiting for a 100 percent (or in this case, 105 percent) run for quite a while, nice to see it's finally been made.
When you play on the hardest difficulty (By writing in the TUFST cheat code at the beginning), all (With a few exceptions) DK barrels on the level are removed, as well as the midway barrels.

Too much awesomeness
This trilogy of games is immensely difficult to this day.
That thing was huge right there man I'm see it
That Krevice Kreepers run is so pretty.
Pretty much. The main tools you use are Frame Advance and Save States. Frame Advance lets you record an input for every frame in the run. This game runs in 60 frames/second. @donkeydnd Because of a bug with the sprites. When there are two many sprites on the screen, one sprite can take the color from a different sprite.
If you mean the kong following Dixie throughout the game, that's Kiddy Kong. Lankey Kong only appeared in Donkey Kong 64 but he did make some cameos in the Gameboy Advance version of this game.

Good Show!

Back then they actually knew how to make sequels...good times
Although I prefer Dkc 2 to three, I still really enjoy this game.
It's definitely one of the best looking games.
Jesus... the... the fucking nostalgia! It burns so bad!
Donkey Kong Country Returns was made at least, and that's a good game.
@MSoltan1992 Credit goes to Eveline Fischer and David Wise
Not really. Considering this is a Tool Assisted Speedrun, which is done by the help of slow motion gameplay and save states.

This is insane. He/She literally never dies unless it is completely intentional.
oh good video thanks :DDDD

i guess i i was referring to the in game timer.
12:42 WHOAH DUDE I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THAT!
it is weird that when he played bonus games with catching green bananas, he knew where the bananas exactly would appear, wasn't it incredible??
And yes, it's faster to do it like that for some levels.
When you use the TUFST cheat to enable hard mode all DK barrels (With some exceptions) will be removed from the levels. Instead you'll always start with both Kongs on every level.
Dude u owned that spider oh my god.
hypnotising
@Tomtelala sorta figured that , its a shame they arent systematic LOL the amount of times ive lost the round not gettin there in time :-D - i know the game back to front but i can nver get quick times on those harder grab the banana ones
60:00 - WOW.
1:20:40 . . .
Cranky is impossible to impress lol.
@Toothache42 i got the space and the power for an HD encode if the author would let me...
I like how the Grey tokens look slightly like banjo............
The Bonus at 1:24:40 can be done (I think in a quicker way) by just throwing Dixie on one side and sit on the other :)
Joshua Takahashi i think he was waiting for the banana spawn - like most of this video and most TAS runs I think he's showing off :D
Jimmy Derocher That's a good reason I guess. I just think it's funnier when you see Dixie crying and being productive at the same time. Haha.
I just wish it went through the characters like the other two games.
I think DK2's was more epic, and DK3's was more trippy. Of the trilogy, however, DK2 wins the "most songs I could whistle on a whim" award.
no, it's actually an in game cheat for hard mode, this means, it removes all the checkpoints and many DK barrels.
In compensation, it gives you a nice 105% in your save file when you finish the game.
@advancedpillow The music was composed by someone else. This game has a few awesome tracks but I agree that DKC2 takes the cake on the music front.
I laughed so hard at Riverside Race. That stupid bear never had a chance.
and, uh please, you guys that know what TAS is: don't be mean, try to explain and be nice, there's a lot of people that don't know what it is or what is possible. Try to explain and show to people how cool it is and not be just mean. I don't think my controller (or even my fingers) can physically register commands fast enough to pull this off.
And you're probably right.
Thank god a DKC3 TAS that doesn't use Warp barrels.
I think you are genius.
It would be funny if the KONG-letters were required for 100%, because there is no G in Rocket Rush (starting at 1:31:00) for this version of the game :D.

4:23 what the hell? Where did Dixie come from?
did anyone one else notice the severe lack of dk barrels?????
When I was little, I always thought the end-of-level flags were someone's underwear.
Porfavor espero tu respuesta
I bet the green banana bonuses were a pain, since it's totally random where they spawn.
Weird question but what game is the character shown at 0:00 from?
*sneezes* damnit i missed two bonus rooms
how r you attracting the bananas to you in the bonus levels ? they all randomly appear but some reason you can get them straight away ! please explain how - cheers
30:45 why the hell is the DK coin red?
1:01:00 WHAT THE FLIP IS THIS
Una pregunta
good yes
How are you getting Dixie back at the end of the levels when you take hits? Is there like some glitch that lets you keep them with you if you finish fast enough or something?

I think I might know even not fully knowing it. It goes like this? Allowed to use resources as a tool to aid you through the levels? I think it goes like that.
there's goes my whole child hood in 77 minutes
