    In my humble opinion, using words like "old-fashioned", "dated", and "old" when we talk about perfumes is completely wrong. I am tired of hearing people say that a particular fragrance smells like a grandma. What's wrong with such folks? It is very rude and oh so ignorant. Perfumes are genderless and ageless.

    • @hahna77
      @hahna77 Před 3 lety +18

      Couldn't agree more. My grandmother always smelled amazing. There's something very collegiate and superficial about so many in the younger generations these days. Many of them just want to be the same and are very quick to shame anything that doesn't fit in their neat little trending box.

      I think we need to be careful of how we word things so as not to be ignorant. But I understand how certain fragrances are too mature for me. In the same way I find black opium adorable and yummy but too youthful for me I find Chanel 5 too mature. Mature perfumes merge beautifully with the right person. Chanel 5 is beautiful but it’s beauty clashes with say a 25 year old. It doesn’t feel or work well with her essence.

      Some perfumes are serious and rich and macerated and have a vintage vibe that an older woman will find nostalgic in the same way a teen might find fruity carefree sweet perfume

    Life was so much easier before "influencers" showed up to tell us what we are supposed to like or not like. Back then you didn't have opinions beating you from all sides, you got to form your opinions a bit more on your own. I was 12 when I had my first encounter with Chanel No 5. and fell in love with it. No one told me why I should love it, or hate it - I'm pretty sure I had never heard anything about Chanel at that point - I know I didn't read magazines that advertised Chanel to young teens, or maybe at all. I just know I smelled this beautiful perfume one day and fell in love. I was 13 when I scraped together the $8 to buy a bottle, because they sold it in pharmacies at the time - so swanky and haute anything, it was not. And by that time, No 5 was already over 50 years old. Just think what would have happened if impressionable 12-year-old me had been watching youtube videos back then. I probably would have thought I was SUPPOSED to hate No 5 because it was cheap drugstore crap, old-fashioned, dated, ewww.

    • @karenmott9862
      @karenmott9862 Před 2 lety +2

      @@allyshamagee2331, I was on a perfume-themed streak there for awhile, so I watched a lot of videos by a lot of people. (shrug) So, am I bothered by the topic of perfume? Perish the thought. I'm a long time collector of both vintage and new, and not just Chanels. And Soki can like and dislike whatever she pleases. It's when she goes from expressing a dislike into why xyz scent is bad and worthy of disdain, like it's old-fashioned, a recurring theme of what she clearly considers icky, because we simply must be au courant I suppose, the bottle is ugly, it probably can't be making money (and isn't there a bunch to unpack in the assumptions under the money aspect), it will probably be cancelled because SHE doesn't like it. I would imagine there are a bunch of younger watchers who would simply give a bunch of perfumes they might actually like a hard miss simply because someone is being unnecessarily negative about one or another of them. But you are correct, I have moved on (I got a notification in my email that someone had replied to my post, so curiosity got the better of me, hence I'm here) I got tired of the tone of her videos and the dislikes being value judgements based on her assumptions about things other than the juice, which IMO, is the only thing that matters. I've moved on to Eve Beauty Etc, and back to Victoria at boisdejasmin, both at her blog and a few of her videos here, for reviews that are full of information on a wider array of perfume styles, and express likes and dislikes that aren't subtly or not so subtly trying to prejudice the viewer/reader.

    Actually, I have now adopted Chance Eau Tendre parfum as my signature: I love the blend of floral and fruity, and how the delicate top notes give way to a sensual heart and base notes. It's light enough for work and makes me feel really special. No5 is too strong for an office environment, whereas Eau Tendre is perfect.

    Coco Chanel and Coco Chanel Noir are two of my ride or die signature scent. Especially, the Noir. Truly phenomenal! I love CC as well. I agree with you about the L’eau. Not a fan but the strange thing is the original Chanel No 5 that I had sampled few years back and from my experience, I got more vanilla at dry down than I did the L’eau. I need to revisit and see if that still holds true. I’ve never owned the No 5. I wish I had the 5 sample again to compare the L’eau one. L’eau has absolutely no vanilla nor citrus in my skin at all. It’s just powder musk that’s it. I think it’s really skin chemistry that will perform well on certain people

I purchased the giant 150 or 200 ml size of L'Eau, then once I lived with it a while, I found it had a dominant musk note that was not for me. I exchanged it for No. 5 pure perfume, which I love. Gabrielle Chanel Essence doesn’t have apricot or coconut, it’s amplified tuberose which is a white floral. If you like Chance it does have pink pepper like Allure Sensuelle. No5 l’eau has amplified lemon and the addition of cedarwood, very different from No5 EDT which has no cedarwood but rather amplified sandalwood.

    Oh, funny! I am just at the opposite side of the spectrum. Chance original is too zesty for me and too much musk. The only one to me here is Chance Eau Vive, warmer and more comforting. And my late appreciation is for Allure Edt. Other affinities are evidently in Les Exclusives line. And big pass as to Coco Mademoiselle' alas. I pick up way too much notes that I detect in masculine modern chypres. Although the original Coco was my fave of youth, no matter it was supposed for grownup ladies.
