    Thank-you for the show, Christian! As a child, I distinctly remember eyeing these toys in catalogues to the point of almost burning a hole in the page. The one thing I distinctly remember was how relatively expensive they were, especially the motorized and illuminated ones. For other than birthdays and Christmas, if I wanted a new toy, I had to purchase it from the allowance I received. As a price conscious consumer, these types of toys would have taken me a forever time (almost as long as 2 or 3 generations for a 7 to 9 year old boy) at 20 cents a week to accumulate. But also, even if I had saved up enough for the toy, there was the constant logistical problem of battery supplies, and the carbon batteries of old did not last all that long. Consequently, I purchased scale model aircraft to build and play with as a compromise solution.

    I think mine was a DC-7. It was beyond wonderful. I so wanted it to fly. The propellers just didn't spin fast enough so it would taxi and lights would flash and make a great sound.

    This is the single most awesome video I have ever seen of the collection I once had. My American Electra had lighted props. And I am frankly astonished to see the Viscount in colors of airline companies that never operated the type. I had the TWA DC-9 with steps, the American DC-7 with roll up stairs as well as the Flying Tigers CL-44. Fabulous. Thank You So Much for Great Memories. It underscores how hard my parents tried when they were having their own struggles in the 1960 's. I was one of the luckiest kids alive to have had these as toys and moved on to Travel Agency Display Models, First Class Seats and a Galley from a 1969 Piedmont Boeing 737.

      Thanks very much George for the kind words; I hear you, and I'm right with you; TWA DC-9, big AA DC-7, Tigers '44 too. There were around three of those AA Electras that were very similar to one another, but the one you had was the only one with the lighted props. I had an AA Electra, just not sure which one.

    For Christmas 1961 I got a metal airplane similar to those shown here, only mine came with a wire tether connected to a control box with different colored buttons on it. If I remember correctly, the control box held 4 D-size batteries which powered the aircraft lights, four spinning props, and aircraft sounds. All these were activated by pressing buttons, including sending the plane slowly taxiing forward. It was an amazing toy for an 8-year old boy and I loved it. Now here is the funny part - the day after Christmas I was running the airplane and the two props on one wing quit spinning. Everything else - lights, sounds, and so on continued to work fine. Well, I pointed this defect out to my dad and he said he'd take care of. I figured he'd take it back to the store and get it fixed or get me another one just like it. Well, he took it back to the store alright and that was the last time I ever saw it. Guess he figured he could use the money on some golf balls. Never got another airplane or anything to take its place. Lesson learned early in life - a plane with two working props is better than no plane at all! Keep your mouth shut and just play. Now I'm 66 and would love to have that plane again. Any of you experts know what plane that was?

    Christian, this is a wonderful trip down "memory runway lane" for those of us who had these tin airliner toys as a kid. For me, I received for Christmas 1962 from my parents the Douglas DC-7C with the stewardess who'd appear in the door after the plane went through its engine startup and taxi sequences. Mine was in the 1960's TWA arrow colors (even though TWA didn't have the plane in real life). A few years ago I picked up a tin toy, Made in France by Joustra Air France Super "G" Constellation in nice condition at, of all places, an old car swap meet in Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing!

  • @coriscotupi
    @coriscotupi Před 5 lety

    Huge like! I recall many of those from the 60s & 70s. The high points in this video are IMO the funny contraption that shows up at 03:38 and the SST at 04:08. This might well be the only piece of Boeing SST-related material that actually made it to metal hardware.

    • @mel1nda12ax7
      @mel1nda12ax7 Před 5 lety +2

      corisco tupi: Not so! Among other of these kinds of toy planes I had, I had a tin battery-operated Pan Am "Boeing SST 2707" with the variable-geometry "swing" wings, and it would roll along and the four engines would light up and flash red and make the "jet engine sounds", and the swing wings would swing open and closed. I also had a Pan Am Concorde SST. This was in the early '70s, and I really loved those! I thought those were the coolest things, and, at the time, I remember hearing that both of those planes were what all the airlines were soon going to be flying! No such luck, as I also remember hearing that environmentalists protested and shot the idea for the SST down. I don't know whatever happened to either one of those models, I sure wish I had them today!
      I was just thinking about those the other day, and how the Pan Am name never graced a Concorde or a Boeing SST in real life. The movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" really had a huge impact on me as a kid, when I saw that around the same time, in the early '70s, and that movie even depicted Pan Am spaceplanes flying up to orbiting space stations by 2001. THAT certainly never happened!

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi Před 5 lety +1

      @@mel1nda12ax7 Nice recollection of the 70s spirit. And don't get me started on '2001', it is IMO the best sci-fi film of all time. Attention to detail was unsurpassed before or after. Oops.. I got started. :-)

    • @mel1nda12ax7
      @mel1nda12ax7 Před 5 lety +1

      corisco tupi: "2001" sure was (and is) the best sci-fi film of all time, definitely, IMO! Man! It STILL seems, even now, to be off in the future when I see it today, and, when I see it now, it freaks me out to realize that the REAL 2001 is already 18 years ago!
      It would really be cool if we could still have orbiting space stations that have restaurants and hotels on board, as depicted in "2001". Do you think it will ever be possible?

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi Před 5 lety +1

      @@mel1nda12ax7 Technically it seems that yes it's possible as confirmed by the ISS, still going strong in orbit after more than 20 years. One would think that it would be only in sci-fi movies that we would have a space station in orbit for over 20 years, yet there it is. But tourism and restaurants, etc, is more an economical and financial issue than technical or scientific. I do think we are still a long way away from that point, however. Time will tell. ...Cheers!

  • @scottfw7169
    @scottfw7169 Před 5 lety

    Had a tin and plastic 747 in TWA colors. Dad had/has a metal, and I say metal as opposed to tin because this thing is sturdy, DC-4 looking airplane in I think PanAm colors, been a while since I've seen it. It is from before that battery operation era and even the props are metal. That AA 707 at 4:13 with the boarding stairs is quite nicely done. That AA Lockheed Electra II there at 2:16 is quite nice; one at 3:14 has a nice shape, pity about the printing line-up issue. Fairey Rotodyne was interesting to see.

    Ah yes, the dangerous tin toys of the 50's and 60's. I was three years old in 1956 and my mom put me down for a nap with a tin friction car. I was driving it up and down my forearm when a sharp edge opened up my entire arm from elbow to wrist. Between my screaming and the spurting blood all over my bed, I don't know to this day how mom stayed cool and calm. Ended up with 45 stitches and a well founded fear of tin toys.
