    For all the people with the gene that makes cilantro taste like dawn dish soap what would be a good substitute?

    • @NatalieValentina6
      @NatalieValentina6 Před 6 lety +27

      Thaydarin For real, though...everytime I see sauces that are predominantly flavored with cilantro, I just don't understand how people can enjoy them. It took me YEARS of exposure, to be able to enjoy tomato salsas that include cilantro. Both of my parents hated cilantro, so I must get it from both sides. ;) In the cilantro vs. dill argument, I'm 100% dill. In terms of this sauce, I would add extra spinach & try some other herbs & seasonings...parsley & scallions would probably be my 1st choice.

    • @Thaydarin
      @Thaydarin Před 6 lety +13

      It is because for some people cilantro taste incredible. Not everyone has the gene that makes it taste like soap. I can tolerate it if its cooked to death or accompanied by something very acidic, but my cousins love it so much they can eat it raw.

    • @NatalieValentina6
      @NatalieValentina6 Před 5 lety +7

      Thaydarin I understand how it works, I was just using hyberbole. Of course, tone doesn't always translate via text :) I only meant, that considering how unpleasant cilantro tastes to ME, it always surprises/baffles/astonishes me that it's enjoyable to others...

    • @TheCrathes
      @TheCrathes Před 6 lety +43

      Mars Sonnemans No one said anything about metric. What would make sense is to use weight for something that can vary this much in volume depending on how tightly you pack it. So if you don't want to use metric, just use lbs or whatever unit would be preferable.
      EDIT: Also, you are wrong. You are saying using metric would be too much of a hasstle because you have to be precise for some reason. But 1 cup is 236.588237ml. So you already rounded that in your example. Then why not just round it to something a bit easier? Like 240, or even 250? I'm pretty sure those extra 2-10ml of spinach will ruin the sauce...

      David Friedman ramen just indicates the soba noodles. Doesn't have to be a broth. The advantage of these particular noodles is that sauces or broths stick to the noodles more than wheat noodles. This is due to the alkalinity of the noodles from the soba.

    • @DallasSalladisHere
      @DallasSalladisHere Před 6 lety +178

      Thats actually not true, ramen noodles are not soba noodles as soba means buckwheat and ramen noodles are usually regular wheat flour. The broth is an integral part of ramen and is usually the biggest factor in flavor.

      Ramen noodles are ramen noodles - soup or no soup.
      He never called it ramen - he called it miso pesto with ramen noodles. Or ginger scallion... with ramen noodles.

      Well... saying things like "ramen noodle" is just like saying "chai tea" (literally means tea tea, since chai is derived from the Chinese character chá 茶 (tea)). Ramen (拉麺, 拉: stretch(ed),麺: noodle. Also is originated from Chinese.) actually already has the word noodle in it.

    • @Hana9916
      @Hana9916 Před 6 lety +29

      It's not pesto either. Pesto should have basil, pine nuts and parmesan. The only correct ingredients in this were oil and garlic, and if that are the conditions for something being pesto, then a hell of a lot of things are pesto.

    • @wolframvonrichthofen7913

    • @wrathika
      @wrathika Před 6 lety +74

      I think the noodle themselves are ramen noodles, hence the name of the video. In the video itself they refer to the dishes as noodles. As for pesto Hana, you're describing basil pesto. It should go without saying that it's not the only pesto out there.

    • @wolframvonrichthofen7913
      @wolframvonrichthofen7913 Před 6 lety +10

      Rathika Ramadoss, Ramen for me though is wheat noodles(with the exception of potato noodles of a certain prefecture) with broth, toppings, and other stuff to make the flavor better. Since it doesn't really meet that criteria it doesn't count as ramen hence the title is wrong. it is using ramen noodles but it isn't ramen, hence "ramen noodles served two ways" may be a more appropriate title.

    To those who are so passionate about 🌏 Asian culture: Kudos to you! 😘
    But please don’t ever make the mistake of thinking Ramen means soup noodles 🍜
    Nor assuming Ramen ONLY refers to instant noodles 🥢
    Just because a kind of noodles is usually or was popularised to be served with broth does NOT immediately tie both things together ❌
    And yes to those geeks out there, Ramen is indeed two words 拉Ra-麺Men, with Men meaning noodles. 😜
    Oh and for those who also realised that is the same word in Chow *Mein* , an A+ for you lol 🥡
    So yes, mentioning noodles after you said Ramen is unnecessary but is usually done to make things easier for the international community. 🌝 However if you equate 🍝 *Pasta* with *Ramen* , *YOU ARE DEAD TO ME* ! 🤬

      Huge difference or not, it really depends on your perspective. 🧐 The whole naming thing is a great example of *negative language transfer* in 🇨🇳 *Sino-Japanese* 🇯🇵. You can see transfer errors everywhere especially in *漢字 KanJi* , ✍🏻 the _adopted logographic Chinese characters_ in the Japanese writing system, namely the grammar, character properties, definitions ...... like in this case. This is often normal when the characters are adopted without throughout researches, like in civilian applications. 📚
      The actual meaning of *拉麺/ラーメン RaMen* is _中華風の麺料理 Chinese Style Noodles_ 🍜, which is different from what these two words originally mean in Chinese *拉麵 LaMien* meaning _Pulled Noodles_ . Since there are different kinds of *中華麺 Chinese Noodles* , 💁🏻 the recommended adoption is actually *鹼水麺 KanSuiMen* meaning _alkaline water noodles_ 💧 which is famous for its colour and springiness.
      Now enough of 📜 history and linguistics 🔤, let's jump to culinary arts 🍳. The first dish is *OBVIOUSLY* a fusion dish, the name pretty much shouted that out - *Miso Pesto Ramen* . 🤷🏻 There's nothing wrong with mixing things up. The name of the dish also sufficiently describes the dish. At the end of the day, Andy can surely call it *THE GREEN WIG* . 🤪
      For the second dish, it's actually a local dish called *ねぎ油あえ麺 Scallion Oil Noodles* 🌱. My mom loves it, YALL should definitely give it a try. 😋 It's easy and tasty, except the chopping part hehe 😏 . Okay I guess I should submit this essay now LOL 👅
      P.S. Aeoleaf if you know it's the 🎌 (Japanese-kind of) RaMen, why did you expect hand-pulling noodles in the first place? 😜

      No. Ramen is the name of the dish and it is always with a broth. The broth is part of its identity. Ramen uses wheat noodles or soba (buckwheat) noodles.
      Edit: The type of noodles used in ramen varies.

      So the difference between pasta and noodles is that pasta specifically uses durum wheat whereas the noodles uses common wheat. Cooked pasta is also much chewier in texture (Al dente) compared to noodles which tends to be on the softer side. Also, commonly pasta is stored dried and noodles are stored chilled.

      Dark Kitsune perhaps technicalities arent what he was going for so much as just giving it a name that people would understand and relate to. The people likely to be looking for easy ramen dishes are likely to be people without much experience, but have likely heard the word pesto and understand it to be a green veggie/herbal sauce. Sometimes technicalities get in the way of enjoyment when you focus on them too much. Example, your username and self portrayal on here involves kitsune. You're not japanese, your pic has no fox elements to it, and nothing about your profile has anything to do with anything about kitsune. You just enjoy anime and Japanese culture i assume, so you threw it in there. You've got no technical right to use it, but you did because you wanted to. Andy had no technical right to call it pesto, but he wanted to. Instead of focusing on such technicalities, focus on how delicious this may be instead. I dont think anything sacrilegious could look so delicious^.^
