- What is it like to milk your family cow one week in? In today's video we share K's daily routine milking our heritage Jersey Ladybug.
Last Week our Jersey Cow Ladybug Calved, and now it is milking time!
K heads out each morning with her supplies to the barn. After catching the little calf and putting her in the stall she then leads Ladybug into our stanchion. A little grain keeps Ladybug happy, and she gets to work.
Each day K brings in almost 2 gallons of farm fresh raw milk from our family cow! It is awesome!
I like how you set it up so that she can still see her calf while you're milking her. Less stress for both mamma and baby. 👍🐄

Aint nothin better than a Jersey for milk and cream! Remember as a kid milkin ours and makin butter with the old fashioned churn! Man were those good times!
Being a hand milker myself, I really appreciate your set up and demeanor. Milking is so much more pleasant if the cow is happy. Additionally if you develop a nice relationship with your cow, it is more satisfying for both parties. Do you sing when you aren't videoing?

Looks like a keeper with that Jersey. Great bag and teat conformation, and ease of extraction. Remember doing cousin's cows when young, and it was "a handful" and total fingers, grabbing, squeezing, pulling. This is just like pumping a gas bulb on a boat engine.

beautiful.we use to skim the cream off the top of grandpa's milk can's before the milk hauler picked up the milk to go to the creamery.

Kade 1108 Hi Kade, The milk From Holstein is a1 milk which is harder for humans to digest. There are other cows that are a2 like the Jersey. Jerseys have more cream compared to Holsteins but they do have lots of milk. Enjoy and stay warm.
I'd hate to scare you off because I absolutely adore Holsteins, but for a homestead scenario, even one will have a huge amount of milk and they often don't do well without some high quality dairy feed like corn silage. Jerseys are a much better choice unless you have a good feed source and outlet for all your milk. Just one Holstein can give up to 10 gallons per day at her peak.

in case you don't know, you can pour the cream of the top, when you dip your cup in you aare mixing the cream back in, it is faster to just pour the cream off once it sets. simple an fast, been doing it that way for years, I have a very old hand crank separator but I find it to much clean up, you can turn the dial to take as much cream out as you want right to skim, its been years since I used it
I had a thought 😊 Separate the calf at night, then you milk the front quarters for yourself and the calf will get the harder to milk back quarters? The nice small, tidy teats are less likely to have problems and will last longer. We bought a Jersey from a commercial dairy who had only been machine milked. The first week was a nightmare. We share with the calf now, the cow is happier and she produces near 5 gallons a day. The calf runs with her in pasture during the day, then we stall them at night in loose housing. The calf gets a box stall. I milk in the morning then let the calf strip the cow so in one milking I get 2 plus gallons. We don’t milk at night. I am monitoring the cows production and so far after 6 weeks the amount of milk has not dropped. The cow is in good condition and the calf [a steer] is doing awesome. I really like your down to earth style. God Bless your homestead
I milk my cow once a day and leave the calf in with her the rest of the time. They get separated at night. Once a day is so great and a time saver. Twice a day is really hard to maintain, especially when you have a family. Just wanted to say what I do in case it would help you find the best schedule. I have 5 kids and definitely wouldn’t be able to do twice a day for long. Loved this video and your cow seems so sweet!!!

A single cow milking machine is well worth the $100ish investment. Maybe not for 1 cow if you have time to milk. For 2 or more it's well worth it though. It'll drain 2 gallons in 10 minutes + 10 mins cleanup. We pay $10 per gallon for fresh milk here even though non-pasteurized milk is illegal in Georgia.It's sold as animal feed to not get arrested.

We had goats and just sold them in August due to tiny orrifices and teats on one and a bad attitude in the other. I remember the pain of those first weeks! It took me 45 minutes to milk out a cup to a quart of milk in those days. I got faster and a quart took about 15 minutes. Your cow stands much better than my goats ever did, and I fully support what you said about spending more for a trained cow (or goat) especially as a beginner. Training them while also learning yourself is HARD! My question is, if you're already milking twice a day, and getting almost 2 gallons, what will you do with all the milk once the calf is off? I know you can do a lot more with cow milk than goat, but my fridge was always full of milk. I needed a second fridge just for milk and eggs!

I’m sure it says it somewhere in there, but where did you get your milking equipment. We just got a Jersey. She won’t calve until July, but I’m trying to get all my supplies together so I won’t be behind the 8 ball.

It is a bit easyer with a small Jersey calf just to pull like that. With the big simmental calf I cannot do so quickly though...:-)

Loving your channel. About 4 months ago we bought 2 dexter girls. 1 was pregnant. She had her calf a month ago and I'm trying to milk her. If I want to milk mornings should I pen the calf up overnight? Thank you for any information you can give me. I was told she had been milked before but I don't think so. Do you make you own butter? That was always mine and my brothers job as kids, until we where old enough do start milking. Mother would sit us in the floor and we would roll a jar back and forth to each other to churn it.

Hi! You are amazing! Can you share the recipe for that buttercreme that you make by your self? I use olive oil to make milking easier but after milking I have pain on my fingers. Every cow have different udders small big. I milk every day a different cow and the udders are sometimes very hard. I would to try this buttercreme to see if it works to reduce the pain a little bit.

Calf is a week old, the cow is 3 years old.
Do you do that everyday? 3/4 of a gallon seems a lot (in terms of consumption). Do you sell some? Or preserve it?

Great video like always! I've got a couple of questions. (I'll go back and watch all of your cow vids this evening so I'll probably find all the answers on my own.) We have a miniature horse, chickens, and ducks. In the spring we're adding 2 pigs and possibly a Nigerian goat or a pygmy goat. As far as cattle, I'm leaning towards getting a mini Dexter. 1st question: Do I need a companion cow? 2nd question: Where did you get your stainless steel bucket?

You could name the Calf - 'JerseyBean or just Beanie' maybe ? - because the people that are native to and live on the actual island of Jersey ( which is off the French coast but forms part of UK ) are actually nicknamed and refer to themselves as 'JerseyBeans'. Just a thought haha !! Great vid - I learnt some new facts with it thanks!

+Elle Mietitore great question. K knows more about this, but here I go... A "regular" jersey would be the commercial run, what larger operations generally have. They are bigger than Jerseys originally were. A more mid sized registered jersey that you could trace back to the island of Jersey, that's a Heritage Jersey. Some people have taken those and bred them to be smaller and smaller, thus Mini Jersey. Some of those are so small you need a milking stand like a goats, to milk them. I refer to ours often as a Mini, but really she is a Heritage Jersey.

+Matt melanson no, Raw milk from a safe source is what we prefer to drink. It was what people had for most of history, until factory farming began and requires pasteurization for a unsafe product.
pasteurization is done for liability issues to prevent being sued.
Hi, when your cow is dry how you get milk for your family? you have goats or buy milk in a store?
Have not crossed that bridge yet, but I imagine we will just buy from our local raw milk dairy for the couple of months.

When milking a cow you can drink it straight with out heating it up first
Luis Sousa- Yes the milk gets strained directly into the jar. If you have a healthy cow and make sure everything you use to milk her is sterilized, you don’t need to heat the milk to drink it.
