What India's space program is planning after successful moon landing | DW News

  • The Chandrayan-3 lunar rover has begun exploring the moon's surface, after India became the first country to land a craft near the largely unexplored south pole.
    Chandrayan-3 sent back images of its six-wheeled, solar-powered rover leaving the craft to conduct experiments for the next two weeks. The mission's success has sparked massive celebrations in India - it's only the fourth country to pull off a soft lunar landing - and for the relatively low cost of around $75-million dollars. India says its next plans are for a crewed mission to the Moon.

    Next is Chandrayaan-4 or The Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (LUPEX) that is a planned joint lunar mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The mission would send an uncrewed lunar lander and rover to explore the south pole region of the Moon no earlier than 2026. JAXA is likely to provide the under-development H3 launch vehicle and the rover, while ISRO would be providing the lander.
    The Lunar Polar Exploration mission would demonstrate new surface exploration technologies related to vehicular transport and lunar night survival for sustainable lunar exploration in polar regions. For precision landing it would utilize a feature matching algorithm and navigational equipment derived from JAXA's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) mission. The lander's payload capacity would be 350 kg (770 lb) at minimum. The rover would carry multiple instruments by JAXA and ISRO including a drill to collect sub-surface samples from 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) depth. Water prospecting and analysis are likely to be mission objectives.
    Chandrayaan-5 - Lander based rotary-percussive drilling
    The mission has been suggested for time frame of 2025-30. It will include a lander based rotary-percussive drilling in lunar soil upto a depth of 1~1.5 meters and analysis of cut using instruments. A volcanically and tectonically active area on near side of the moon will be selected for experiment.
    Chandrayaan 6 - Drilling of lunar soil followed and return samples to earth
    The mission has been suggested for time frame of 2030-35. It will include drilling of lunar soil followed and return samples to earth.

    I think for crewed missions we will need more powerful rockets. One India keeps costs down is through gravity assist but it added almost 35 days to this mission. A crew would rather get there and back within 4-5 days, like the Apollo missions

    • @death_parade
      @death_parade Před rokem

      Lmao. Ofc we will need a more powerful rocket. Sadly, our next gen rocket is not likely to be powerful enough for such a mission. We need at least 75 tons to LEO capable rocket. And ideally, it should be 150 tons to LEO capable. And it needs to be reusable. So put that thought of using the SCE-200 engine out of your head. And the methalox engine that ISRO is making (LM-100) is only 100 ton thrust. We need 200 ton at least. And then we need to stack em up like Starship. I'd say all this will easily take till 2040 to achieve. After that, we might be able to think of a Manned Moon landing.

    As humans take their first tentative steps to worlds beyond earth , working with other nations in collaboration will make missions to the moon , and to the other planets not only possible , but much easier . With many contributing countries sharing in the technological challenges and in the financial burden associated with such ambitious projects , my hope is that in time , all of this will forge a unification between countries , such that in the not too distant future there won't be ' individual nations ' anymore , but rather one global community of people , all from the planet earth .

Yesterday only they have sent NASA astronauts to ISS from their rockets. First read about "Falcon 9 booster" then you will realise what spacex has done that no one has done till now. Then read about "Starship", what they are trying to achieve by that. Looks like you have only seen videos of spacex rockets exploding.
