  • Materials:
    - 0.5 mm 3-ply cotton rope (any rope should work)
    - Large white feathers
*Notes on dye product I'm using: The photo at the start and end of this video is of a bold pink - when I created the tutorial I used two dyes to create a blush pink. For the bold pink I used about a 3-4 tbsp of Rit Dye in Petal Pink with 3-4 cups of water. For the blush pink I used 1 tbsp of Rit Dye in Petal Pink and 1 tbsp of Rit Dye in Golden Yellow with 3-4 cups of water.
    Dip Dye Rope
Hey guys! Today I am going to show you how to dip dye your own rope and feathers.
I’m using 0.5 mm 3 ply cotton rope but I believe that you could use this technique with any size and type of cotton rope (3 ply, single stand, or braided).
Tie your rope in the middle at the top and fold it in half so that the ends are even.
I’m going to dip dye the bottom half of my rope. Before doing so I will cover that section in hot water. Only cover the section that you want to dye in water - if you cover all of the rope in water then when you try to dip dye your rope the dye will run up the rope.
I bought this bowl at the dollar store. I use it only for dying rope. The sides of the bowl have been stained yellow a bit but I’ve never found that the stain discolours the dye so no need for a new one.
Typically I wear gloves when I’m dyeing my rope - I didn’t today because the mixture is very diluted and this particular bottled dye is safe for my skin but not all dyes are.
Dunk the wet section of your rope into your dye solution. How I achieve the dip dye look is by rinsing out the dye from the top section of the rope and then dunking the ends of the rope back into the dye afterwards.
I keep the bottom of the rope in the dye mix for about half an hour (if you are dying a darker colour you might need to keep your rope in the dye in longer - there are usually directions on the bottle).
Every 5 to 10 minutes I will come back to the dye mixture and mix around the rope a little bit to make sure that there are no strands that are stuck together (leaving the rope white). I also don’t want to have a line on the rope where the rope is sitting in the dye - moving the rope around will prevent this.
Grab your rope, squeeze out the dye, and rinse with hot water.
Hang your rope to dry. I would recommend separating it out so that it dries quicker. I’ve hung my rope on a clothes rack I purchased at Wall-Mart for around $20. Tip: put a towel down on the floor to collect the drips!
    Dip Dye Feathers
I’m using the same dye solution as the rope to dye white feathers that will match the rope colour. I’ve put the dye solution in a taller cup so that I can cover most of the feathers with dye. Start by wetting the feather then place it in the dye. If your cup isn’t quite tall enough to fit the full feather you will have to dunk it, flip it, then dunk it in the dye a few times.
I left my feathers in the dye solution for about half an hour - every 5 to 10 minutes I come back to the dye mixture to mix the feathers around a little bit and flip them over.
Remove the feathers from the dye and rinse them out. Place them on paper towel to let them dry.
Thanks so much for watching! I love to see your work so please feel free to tag me on Instagram if you’ve used one of my tutorials!

Hi! I noticed this video shows the bottom half of your moon dream catcher. What kind of knots did you use to attach the dyed rope to the dream catcher and how did you attach the feathers? If you made a vid on these techniques, please direct me to it as I could not find it when I scrolled through your videos. Thank you.

I used Lark's Head Knots to attach the dyed rope to the dreamcatcher. I attached the feathers using gathering knots. I have tutorials for both of these knots within the playlist "BEGINNERS START HERE".

What harm will it do to not rinse the dye out?

The photo at the start and end of this video is of a bold pink - when I created the tutorial I used two dyes to create a blush pink. For the bold pink I used about a 3-4 tbsp of Rit Dye in Petal Pink with 3-4 cups of water. For the blush pink I used 1 tbsp of Rit Dye in Petal Pink and 1 tbsp of Rit Dye in Golden Yellow with the same amount of water. Hope this helps! Thanks
