I remember trying to buy some tapes from a street music stall in Varanasi many years ago, I had a lovely chat with the owner and when he suggested Nikhil Banerjee I admitted that I had never heard of him. He refused to let me buy my tapes until I put a Banerjee one in there too (which he made very cheap). He said I would appreciate what he had done when I listened to it, he was so right.
Jon M: Same here. I never heard of him. I was always enjoying Shankars, Khans. Last year YT recommended one from him & it's more than pleasant. His versions are bit slow, rather soft than Shankar & others. I often enjoy these Indian classical music by those gems. Thanks from Great Britain (Fri 29 Jan 2021 1134)

Such a beautiful raag! Every time I listen to this raag, I become so emotional... Sure, Pt Nikhil Banerjee's rendition of this piece is amazing, but hat's off to Baba Allauddin Khan for creating this beautiful raag.
To those who asked, the tabla player is Anindo Chatterjee; and the recording is of a live concert in Paris in 1975 - which appears to be when Nikhilji made the Sonodisc studio recordings of ragas Patdeep and Jogiya Kalengara, as well as Monomanjari, together with a short (circa 17-minute) version of Manj Khamaj, and a Bengal folk tune. Outside of India, some of his best recordings seem to have been in Paris. (And by the way, if anyone has a recording of his wondrous performance of Raga Kedar, at the Alexandra Palace in London, please do post it.)
I have the cassette of this, says it was recorded in St. Johns Church in Berkeley, CA. Was my first cassette I ever bought right during the time I met him in Copenhagen.
In the nectar which flows through Nikhil Ji's fingers, one finds the grand heights of creativity and imagination, which was generously stored up in Baba.. Please accept my Namaskar, Baba! 🙏🙏
@@bluecrossrahul Thank you. I didn't know anything about Ghosh but I'll search for his flute videos. I love the sound of the flute. (Wed 16 June 2021 10h58)
luckily there is a way, to enyoy that what he has immortal left for us: the spiritual branch of classical hindusthan music in his bengal way; now he is now in the heaven.....like to be near to him !
@@AnirbanBanerjeeTheSarodGharana I think this is a better interpretation because of the frequent use of "Komal Nishad" in combination with "Shuddha Dhaivat". Many thanks for commenting. It brought me again to this video and gave me the opportunity to go through the listening process of this scintillating piece. Even in the Gat portion around 24:20 Panditji brings in the flavour of "Kedar".

raga manj khammaj is created by legendary baba allauddin khan.nikhil banerjee was disciple of baba and performed this very beutifully
Thanks from Great Britain for those info I was looking for. I guess Shankar was another student of him!

Beautiful indeed----!!!! Was also accompanied beautifully by Tabla--? Artist

Sasha King Crimson !!!
the raag is the imagination of panditji's guru ustad alauddin khan sahab. we all are aware of panditji's worship to his guru
Who is the tabla player?? respect all artists by having the courtesy of naming them too.
+Rajendra Jadeja
My guess is Anindo Chatterjee.
+tinderhorn - Thanks, I agree with you it very much sounds like AnindoJi. Fully deserving of having his name included in the title.
yes he's superb listening to his fantastic accompaniment for n b's ragashree
But the ALAAP is heavily layered with Raga Behag. Only with the Gat, the flavour of Manj Khamaj blooms.
you could have said Rageshree instead of Behag...
