    4:3 has been one of the most popular video settings across the Counter-Strike franchise. Recently, however, some pros like frozen, Twistzz, and skullz have been switching back to 16:9, or native resolutions, despite having played on stretched res for years. Today, we'll be diving into some of the potential reasons why these pros have switched, and why you might want to as well.

    I played streatched since 2016 but switched to Blackbars in Nov 2023. I realized that a weak point in my game was my ability to track moving targets so it didn't make sense for me to play a resolution that makes it more difficult. In the spirit of experimentation, I tried blackbars after years of thinking it was just for older players who played on 4:3 monitors. But I realized that I like intentionally cutting off my periferal vision as it makes it easier for me to focus on what I'm actaully point my crosshair at. I know its stragne to intentionally give up the advantage of seeing more, but I win more duels when I'm playing on settings that make me feel comfortable because that's what's most important.

Although the game would end up freezing at times with no way to open task manager or anything else to close it. So I had to put it on sleep mode, only for the resolution to carry over into Windows unless I restarted the PC. Let that be a warning to be careful with changing your resolution.

    I feel like obsessing over cm/360 is a bit silly
    for years and years I went by the mentality of "never change your sens you'll ruin your muscle memory" while using 3.1 @ 400 in CS until one day I went through a slump, lowered my sens by half and fragged out of my mind. Ever since I've been going lower and lower and realizing that I can adapt to a different sens in a day or two pretty easily
    Anyways, if you want like the idea of "zoomed in" res but can't stand 4:3 streched maybe try 16:10 streched with the 1728x1080p custom res, I've been loving it in cs2

    • @tObito687
      @tObito687 Před měsícem +1

      some of the best advice ive heard is that aim is not muscle memory, its a skill. yes you can train yourself to do the same precise flick but when youre in game and have to react to various different peeks and angles, it becomes much more of a skill thing than a muscle memory thing.

    • @lad4830
      @lad4830 Před měsícem

      @@tObito687 But if you keep same sens and same res you will learn exactly how much you need to move your mouse in order to hit something that's certain distance from cross. Imagine awp holding left side of top mid boxes from window and someone runs up from left. If you go into offline with friend and practise that for few hours you will always land it, because you know exactly how much you need to move and that is muscle memory. Hitting runboost mid air is different conversation, because you don't encounter that as often and that gets us to off angles. You use muscle memory to preaim most common angle in that area + you need to have a good aim to flick all the off angles around it. So muscle memory is important as it sets the baseline you can build the rest upon.
      I have a video of my recent ace, check the second kill on short. I preaim the most commonly held off angle and flick from it slightly to the right where enemy is

    The majority of my playtime in GO was on stretched. It was butter smooth and made the game more responsive. However, I switched 2 or maybe 3 years ago to Full HD. Never went back to stretched. As you said - people are supposedly peeking slowly, I have enhanced fov with the slighg disadvantage that people are "skinnier". Let's add the fact that for some reason CS 2 looks absolutely horrendous in lower resolutions or settings than CS:GO did for some reason.

    I was blackbars player at first then switched to stretched bc most pros played that. In 2021 I switched to 16:9 1472x828 to help me track wide peekers. At some point after playing some months of valorant, went back to csgo and needed to switch to native bc I got used to the sharpness of 1080p while playing valo. At cs2 I switch between native, blackbars 1728x1080 or 1440x1080 blackbars. Always 1080p vertical res to maintain a sharp image and always blackbars to get correct horizontal velocity.

    my biggest issue with native right now is that my pc isn’t the most optimized, it runs cs2 at like 180 fps on native, and when smokes go up, when mollies initially spread, and especially when nades blow up smokes, i drop to roughly 40 fps even with almost all the lowest graphic settings. on stretch res i sit at around 400 fps and only drop maybe 20 frames down to around 375-380 when all the util shit happens

    I've tried to play CS stretched and every other game native, but it made me feel nauseous switching between such different FOVs for some reason. Not totally sure why. It was like looking through warped glasses, which eventually made me feel sick. Doesn't seem to matter in casual games, but in Valorant I just couldn't get used to native without feeling dizzy so now I don't play it much anymore. Weird but yea

  • @Tritone_b5
    @Tritone_b5 Před měsícem +3

    I tried going back to 16:9 but failed. I actually don't find that fast player movement and smaller FOV greatly affects my games. I generally hold angles "wider" than how it should feel and IMO lurks in pugs are generally a non-factor at my level.
    With all that said, I would say to anyone getting into the game get used to 16:9 first. It's not the res that get you the win.

  • @evandossett3897
    @evandossett3897 Před měsícem +1

    16:10 is the goated resolution; gives you both a good amount of stretch while allowing for a good amount of visibility (in terms of FOV and quality). Also (as an awper), allows for precision and removes that horizontal velocity. But hey, I do like that you mention at the end of the video that it is really more-so preference at the end of the day lol.
    I will say, anyone who obsesses over getting the exact settings in every game or trying to keep the same crosshair/sensitivity for years are insane and is proven to be a non-factor in keeping skill or obtaining skill over different games or time. Changing any of these settings (as long as it isn't to an obvious disadvantage, like 1x1 resolution) will very rarely make you better or worse. This will give you a slight improvement sometimes, which at a high level (like the pro scene) can matter. Personally, I have a base sens that I start each day on, and if it feels slow or fast I will adjust it accordingly. That base has kind of landed around 1000 edpi, with some days going down to 800. People will complain that this messes up your muscle memory but throw around the term incorrectly. There is plenty of good research available so Ill give a base TLDR: your muscle memory when playing video games is built in a way that your brain can adjust between different games/sensitivity/resolutions and still be able to hit flicks and shots that most would say is a result of having good "muscle memory". There is a reason why when most players switch between games, they will generally be better than just a regular casual gamer starting out. This is why CS players switching to Valorant were able to perform as well as they did, or also why people like Shroud are able to switch between games and still be amazing at them when never even having played them prior.

    i used to only play 16:9 and have alway hated 4:3 because it looks kinda off and u have like 15° less fov which is a huge disadvantage for everyone. now i tried 16:10 and kinda feels and looks nice :D i dont know what it is about it but it kinda fits this game in my opinion. but non of that bullshit, that u can aim better for heads is true. if ur eyes are capapble of spotting small heads, then its alright. even if the enmies are bigger, they also move faster across the screen, in the same proportion. so theres no catch in this topic. its kinda stupid not to play in native, because of the sharpness but it feels nice:D huge tip for clearest non native res. use the tool CRU to make a new res for your monitor.
    for example i play on 1440p and the highest 16:10 res available was 1900x 1000 something.
    to let one axis be native i created 2304x1440 and it looks the clearest 16:10 for 1440p.
    16 divided by 10 is 1.6.
    1.6 times 1440 is 2304.
    the clearest 16:10 ratio for 1440p
    4 divided by 3 is 1.33
    1.33 times 1080p is around 1436
    so 1436/1437 x 1080 clearest 1080p 4x3 res

      That's hardware issue. CS2 made a lot of csgo players go inactive or quit and we got a lot of newcomers who don't know our ways. But it's still fair to say that at least 70% are using 4:3 stretched. (It was 90% on csgo if I remember correctly) Point is. If it was a game issue, we would all have it. So that means either your game files are corrupt (do "verify intergrity of game files") or there is an issue with your computer settings.

    • @syno6412
      @syno6412 Před měsícem

      @lad4830 No that is incorrect, it can be a game stability issue on a certain combination of hardware, it doesn't necessarily indicate anything is wrong with the computer itself. That is still the games fault, this issue only began after updating to CS2.

You will learn the angles and how to interact with them to see everything you need even on smaller res. There is a reason for 99% of lvl10 players using stretched 4:3 1280x960 / 1280x1024. Also If you want to really get into CS. You should get minimum 144hz, ideally 240hz, 24"-27"with corresponding hardware of course. Can't run game on 240hz when you have 150 fps. decent hardware is massive advantage. It's not moba or an rts. It's fps and you need all the fps and all the hertzes :D Feel free to ask me anything regarding cs. As they say...I've been around the block.

    i noticed a lot of players that used black bars in GO switched to 16:9. namely Frozen, Ax1le (went back to BB), and sh1ro (went to 4:3 stretched). i think its because black bars (especially 1024x768, which is what frozen and sh1ro played on) looks really blurry in cs2. i never had problems seeing enemies on 1024x768 BB in GO but in CS2 i also had to switch to 1280x960 stretched just to be able to see. something about better graphics makes lower res look even worse than before. not unplayable tho. i am 20 and haven't played for years and years so i dont think its my eyes that are the issue

    you should try to figure out something that ive been struggling to understand for awhile now and that is why pros dont switch to 1440p/2k because even on my system which isnt quite top of the line albeit it is good i still get 450fps average on relatively high settings the visual clarity you gain from doing so is well worth it imo and ips panel ghosting rates/input delay/refresh rates etc are almost identical to tn panels and if youre a pro playing for an org you should have access to a stronger pc with better optimization than me so it just doesnt make a lot of sense especially if you are playing on 1280x960 as it just looks terrible you play 1920x1440 for the same stretch with MUCH higher fidelity idk let me know what you think

    • @WaTzu
      @WaTzu  Před měsícem +5

      number one reason just has to do with familiarity. the pros too were once kids who just enjoyed the game and didnt have the most powerful pcs, so they just got good at 1280x960, and since they found so much success that they went pro, its hard to switch. it almost entirely based on the argument "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

    • @Charvix
      @Charvix Před měsícem

      @@WaTzuthat's clearly not the reason. Pros innovate and adapt. The real reason is that 2k monitors at high refresh rates aren't tournament standard yet and I don't see that changing anytime soon as such high visual clarity is just unnecessary compare to good motion clarity that most 1080p monitors can deliver with a reasonable price tag. The longest dueling distance in the game is A long on dust 2 which isn't even on the map pool, whereas cqbs are everywhere.

Yeah 500hz ips with ulmb exist rn and its amazing, 480hz oled releasing soon and looks stunning, even 540hz tn is available for purchase and offers crazy smoothness. But good ol 2566k gets the job done. You argument just sounds like "why bother using an ips when oled exist", and "why bother using a gpx when gpx2 exist". Its just not that big of an upgrade.

    I hate stretch res. It looks terrible and I never like lowering my fov in any game. Also I feel like having a higher res/monitor size is underrated. If you have a bigger monitor you can sit a normal distance away and models still seem bigger. Sure it is generally recommended to have a higher resolution with bigger monitors for pixel density, and this will lower your framerate. But tbh if you’re getting like 500fps and you go down to 300 I don’t really see the problem, the extra clarity and size is worth it imo. It really does help at range and on tight angles

    I bet most people who read it can't run cs2 in full hd on high enough frame rate for it to make sense. That's the case for me, I have a 240hz monitor and in full hd I have less than 200fps, not worth it
    In my opinion standardisied dpi across games is not worth it. Think about it, for cs you want a low res that probably won't even let you do a full 180. Compere that to something like tf2 or battlefield or on the extreme quake where you are gonna be attacked from all angles so you will need that full 180 probably even a little more. Now you either have 2 different dpi, or you have to compromise your performance in one of the games
