Hey there! Hope your back on your bike! So I thought about what's bothering you with the top-out of the fork. I think the remedy to this is to go less preload on a stiffer coil. Because if you think about it a un-preloaded coil does not excert forces when the fork is unweighted. If you preload the coil it wants to extend even if your at full extension already. So if you de-weight the fork really fast it runs into the hard stop. Smashpot and 38 might be the way to go since vorsprung has way more coils to choose from and you can get the springrate perfect with minimal preload instead of relying on preload for support.

Hey about that bottoming out, Fluid Focus make some bumper stops custom for the weight and also have the SAR springs that are super accurate with the rate. And are a little lighter
Also the sar springs are heavier than the ohlins and fox light springs by 50-80grams. They are a good alternative to the rockshox coils though with a weight saving of around 80grams give or take. Its a big cost for 80 grams I think
reckon if you got your hands on a Zeb Select + or a 38 performance with grip damper like an OEM style would be a killer fork for the Smashpot conversion? Dunno if you’d bother with a Factory or Ultimate as the performance would be too similar to warrant the expense? Killer vid. Cool to see you stoked on it. 🤙🏼
I feel like you’d want a tunable damper to get the most out of the coil spring somaybe the best forks are the best match. But with that said its only a minor upgrade going to the more adjustable Grip2damper

Someone mentioned wps the other day, that was the first I had heard of it. Like you said its hard to find much info on them. I was looking at the spec for the marzocchi coil and they use a 10wt oil. So maybe I can go back to their standard compression and rebound tune and just run a 5wt oil for potentially a similar result. I’m curious to know how the different oil weights behave in the same shocks
I have converted to Carbon wheels and in terms of trail feel imo its superior. In saying all that it depends on the layup and dimensions. But it does have a more point and shoot feel. Just make sure warranties in check or run a insert at least in the back and perhaps run a psi or 2 higher in pressures.
Thanks for the feedback, yep as long as the warranty is legit it may be a good investment. I’d want those wheels to be basically indestructable for the price, and to minimise the carbon fibre waste product if one does get trashed
Telly who is the suspension guy in Adelaide. Ive just moved here and blown my X2 . Did Fox creek today for the first time, cool trails and the uplift is good.
You can go to bicycle express, WillRide, or Pete at BMCR. I personally send most of my stuff to Cyclinic purely for the exceptional service I’ve always had from them. WillRide has a pretty sick setup these days, but if your float x2 is blown you’re eligible for a 2024 upgrade for a very small fee, so I’d send it to cyclinic
I tried the fox 38/smashpot. Felt great but it makes the front end dive because it’s so damn heavy. Better suited e-bikes imo. Went back to air 38 after a few rides
@@mtbtelly5522 I’m 87kg and ran 50lbs spring. It’s also the 90cc of oil the spring side calls for with the smashpot… we’re talking a > 3kg fork here when all is said and done 🤯
@@jawzzy3 yeah tell meabout it. Its just too much for me. This Z1 is good but I’m on a 47.5lb spring at 78kg and find it a little undersprung still. That 50lb at your weight would’ve made for a soft under sprung ride yeah? Definitely would not be enjoyable soft and overly heavy
@@mtbtelly5522 Felt pretty good actually. 50lbs is the recommended spring for my weight on the vorsprung site (middle settings on the calculator). Everytime I caught some air or pointed down steep tech, the front of the bike wanted to dive though… I’m sure I could’ve gotten used to it and compensated but it wasn’t ideal.
Glad you’re loving this setup! Do you still have your air seal on the coil shaft? Or have removed that to stop the end ramp up progression? I haven’t touched it on my 170 coil, and I do notice it doesn’t reach full travel, but I don’t care because the damn Z1 rides so good. I also like Nobl TR37s for the exact reason you mention. I never have to touch them and I freaking smash everything with them. Really impressed (going on 3rd season with them).
Nah I’ve left it all as it comes. I’ve bottomed it a few times now with the firm spring installed, but can mitigate it depending on how much preload I run. I’m trying to get an extra firm spring to test. The firm is quite soft for me with no preload so the next spring up might be perfect, if not a touch stiff

how's the coil's midstroke, on the forks? a lot of forum warriors report that the forks are diving and are diffult to balance suppleness with support. Running air F/r and dream of the days of consistet pressures :D
Yeah the midstroke is excellent with the appropriate spring rate and preload setup. At 78kg the firm 47.5lb spring still feels a little undersprung for me the 55lb extra firm should be perfect, maybe a touch stiff. On these trails on the firm spring I’ve had to run 9 or more clicks of preload for adequate support. With preload full open its absolutely too soft a spring rate for me. Which results in instability, a sluggish bike diving in and out of the travel, and a lack of trust in the front end

The Grip2 damper lacks support in general. It requires a lot of custom work to get it to behave well for a lot of riders. It's probably why you feel like you have to lean on the compression so much. If it were me, I'd spend a bit extra on a Fast SC5 cartridge or work with a local tuner to get the stock Grip damper the way I want it. But as always, enjoy the content!
Nah I like the light damping on the grip2. On my air spring setups I’m always close to open on the compressions, I may try the next coil rate up so I’m not compensating so much with preload and compression. For me running a stronger compression tune means under springing to allow for hand comfort, otherwise the mits get bashed on rough trails

@@iliketoridebikes the spring itself seems silent, it doesnt rattle or make any noise when you bounce the bike on the back wheel, its more just the extension force coming to a hard stop and not having a topout bumper I think

Yeah i could do with another spring firmer, but also the next spring up may be too far on the firm side. Vorsprung seems to have more available increments for spring choice, but that heavy bottomout damper setup is hard to swallow
The difference is weight. Z1 and 36 rhythm have thicker stanchions of lower grade aluminium and heavier lower legs than 36 Performance, which shares everything except for the Grip2 damper with the Performance Elite and Factory (+kashima coating). So you pay for weight reduction by higher grade materials.

Their rear springs are ridiculously overpriced at $225. But i haven’t seen anything about the fluid focus stuff?

The banshee had a high standover height so the seat was always a little high, the Reign has much more room under me which I prefer
