5 years ago, Mason Miller had an ERA above 7 in Division III college baseball. Now, he's the best closer in MLB. Here's how one life-altering diagnosis changed everything.

I went to college with him so I’ve been following him since 2021. But I definitely didnt think he’d ever become so well known
Damn how u know him personally and not believe in him
Probably wasn’t pumping 104 then😂
@@otgbaby4615 Every player on that team wanted to make it to the pro’s and I think 2 of them were even drafted. Not that I didnt believe in him personally, more so that it’s SO hard to make it to the bigs
@@KaPowSplat nah it’s not that hard u just gotta be committed to baseball 24/7. Me personally I could’ve probably gotten drafted but I wanted to pursue college and get a career
@@otgbaby4615 🧢
NAIA and D3 life is not for the weak.
I feel like the competition at D3 and D2 is even more cut throat than D1. You probably feel like you have to be perfect or you will be cut loose. Its really hard.
This guy is getting more hype than Skenes.
He's better
@@AndThatsBaseballdoesn’t matter Uncle Ben, Christian Scott is better than both
@@AndThatsBaseball maybe because hes 3 years older
@Snazzeo Lgm
@@AndThatsBaseballwill he return to SP?
Faced him down in Florida in that covid season for 1 of the 2 starts that year. Astros scout at the game. Threw a complete game 13ks was still sitting 97 while at 100 pitches. Dude was nasty back then can’t imagine facing him now.
Love Mason Miller, truly an inspirational story. Wishing him nothing but the best
Best pitcher to wear the green and gold since Zito at least.
Kid simply breaks the eye test.
Opposite style of pitcher as Zito in nearly every way too lol
@@AndThatsBaseball that's why I can't say he's better.
Best fastball an A's had or best curve? Take your pick.
@@pumpbustersv1 chill bro its been 18 innings.
Won't be for long.
the A's had blake treinen in 2018 and Liam hendriks in 2019-2020. the best closer in baseball in 3 consecutive years.
I have Type 1 diabetes and u was diagnosed in college as well. I guarantee he was sick for a long time like I was. It was random that how I was diagnosed like him. When he got his blood sugars under control he became a new person. This is an AWESOME story.
Heyy me too! I got completely fucked over after getting mono which triggered it and haven’t been able to pitch well since 💀
Don’t give up. You got this 🙌🙌
Type 1 Diabetic D3 pitcher here!! glad y’all are feeling better!!!
No d1 offers is crazy. The amount of guys I went to high school with that at least got preferred walk on at D1 was like 8 just in my class. What a story.
Idk where you’re from, but the smaller northeastern schools get very few scouts. Gotta either play club ball, or play for a notable private school to get looks. Idek if Miller played club, there’s very little info about his time in HS.
i played D1 and pro ball and have coached several years in high school. Having EIGHT D1 players on the same team in the SAME CLASS is insane and absolutely not normal lol. Your team had to be one of the best in the country full stop. We only had 4 on my team (1 in my class, 2 in the year above, 1 in the year below) in HS my junior year and were state runner ups.
30 total profesional innings right into MLB is totally insane. Can you imagine what thats like mentally? Wild.
As a WU student at the same time as Mason seeing his career has been amazing for everyone at the school
Somebody from my high school is playing football there rn. This is really cool to see.
He is throwing his Changeup less than 1% of the time, even though he had a pretty good whiff rate on it as a Starter.
If he can master that changup at even 5-10%, he could become even more lethal as a Closer...crazy stuff..
He went on MLB Central and talked about that. Basically said the slider and fastball are working well enough on their own, so he doesn’t need to mix the changeup or cutter in at all. Still throws ‘em in his side sessions, and he knows the change has good metrics, but as long as the fastball and slider are working, he doesn’t need to use anything else.
@@AndThatsBaseball fair enough..
i knew the minute i saw him close against the rangers earlier this season that this kid was an animal. I was wondering where tf he came from and why he was on the A's
Knew about him after his debut last year, but when he absolutely shut down the heart of the Yankees order in April, I knew I had to talk about it
Spread the good word- he’s been a joy to have in fantasy and look forward to watching him pitch. And as a Yankee fan, speaking on your point Woo is next up and very very good
Those 100 mph stats are CRAZY, I had no idea
This is how Chapman used to dominate the velo leaderboards. One of the crazy things I noticed besides Miller was that Skenes had like the 5th most >101 or something like that … in one single start.
@@AndThatsBaseball lmfao
I definitely think he has the potential to be a really good closer throughout his career, should he maintain his velocity and avoid injury. However, with how hard he throws and with how common we see young, promising pitchers fall under the knife of Tommy John surgery, I fear the worst for him. But should he remain healthy, he could very well be my generation's version of Aroldis Chapman during his prime. Coming from me, a Phillies fan, I'm excited to see what this guy has more to offer.
Obviously injuries are a concern, but Aroldis Chapman hasn’t had anything serious yet, despite being the closest thing to Miller
Miller has easy velo, it doesn’t look like he’s throwing at his max intensity even when he’s hitting triple digits. Hopefully that’s a sign of durability.
@@AndThatsBaseball looks can be deceiving. See the mild UCL tear
Holy, I feel this video so much. Sick my junior/senior HS years, turned out as undiagnosed type 1 diabetes. Found out frosh year @ D3 school. Go MM!
I love Adams’ delivery motion, looks so effortless and it’s so effective
Interesting first comment on a video about Mason Miller
@@AndThatsBaseballlook he was in the video and I just wanted to bring it up
This is about Miller…
I remember watching an astros game last year and I was annoyed that the astros couldn't score any runs against the a's it was mason miller pitching now it makes sense
Be 6'5" with long arms and strong torso, plus be gifted with elite flexibility. Recipe for success.
Interesting story, I did not know about his history. Well done.
great video. your enthusiasm is great . hopefully we will see you on tv one day .
2 hottest rookies in baseball, are Skenes in Pittsburgh and Mason Miller who’s from Pittsburgh.
This is a real life movie. The wild thing 🔥
Even though I am not an Upstate alum, it is cool seeing a school that is only a short drive from my house in a video. Great video as always!
Nice narrative and visuals
Been following him since 2022.
Describing a job with a health network as working in finance is a uniquely American experience.
For profit healthcare rahhhhhh 🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
So is getting treatment within 6 months for non-life threatening injuries
@@JNJ1014what? You think I wait 6 months for non life threatening healthcare on public health? Lmao. Get real man.
Great video, good editing. Nice job!
Great video. Great story. I never comment on videos but this is truly a great story and wish the kid a great career. Go get em mason
I live just a few streets away from Bethel Park High School. Pretty awesome to see a local guy make the big leagues!
Love vids like this: always great to champ a young comeuppance. 🤙
Also reminds me of Dibble throwing 105 by new measurement standards or Gibson rocking 102, inning after inning. ⚾️
Praying Ryan Express level that it stands.
YOUNG HS CANONS: NOT pitching games, and planning to peak physically after age 20 while developing your fundamentals is a more probable route to The Show than what I see around the country these days.
This man throws FLAMES
Some of the most insane stuff and numbers I’ve seen. Witnessing history, just wish he had a future with the A’s 😢
If this dude keeps it up he should be in Cy Young talks
Get this man on a playoff team!
That fastball just explodes out of his hand. There's a fast fastball that's thrown 100+ and then there's one with pure velocity behind it because his arm action is so quick and explosive, the only thing the batter can think is "shit shit shit!" cause there's no reading that arm action. I see this kid going BIG places
Wonder what the A’s going to get for him at the trade deadline, seen him in Houston recently and sheesssh. Definitely will follow his career and hopefully not a victim of the elbow bug going around
best closer right now, gives me goosebumps
He is my substitute teachers nephew, I was so fucking hyped when he popped off
He’s a future brave I’m calling it now
Bro those fastballs are as explosibe as his elbows gonna be. I mean it as purely a joke but im actually scared for its strong possibility.
It’s not a possibility, it’s an inevitability
who cares. he’ll get surgery and come back stronger like 85% of TJ surgeries now. You guys that obsess over elbow ligaments come off jealous af ngl
If he continues playing for the Athletics he will be fine he pitches every like 3 months. The athletics won't give him save opportunity's lmao
Skenes starter Miller reliever is a world series combo
one correction, D3 schools do give out scholarships, just not athletic ones. BUT that doesn't mean that everybody who just so happens to be on the baseball team can't get a random 25k scholarship. i played d3 baseball, i would know
Yeah, and Miller did have an academic scholarship
Never heard of any of those players till now. In fact I had no idea what was going on with the A’s. That’s sad. That was Connie Mack’s team.
In that same USC upstate video you showed Mason hit 101 on our radar gun. So his velo at the draft combine was actually a bit down lol.
I wish I had more footage of him in college
I played college baseball at Grove City College. Waynesburg was in our conference.
grove city’s a great liberal arts college
No one is gonna talk about Super Mario Galaxy music in the background huh?? HILARIOUS 🤣
Learn the name Justin Martinez, RP for the Dbacks. He'll be talked about with Miller and Duran
Shoutout Diabetes. I didn’t know they were chill like that
Thank You
Cubs need to throw the farm at the A’s for this guy
Please …
Why did Otis star playing at 7:46 😂 Great vid
Cuz it bangs
@@AndThatsBaseball very true
Fuck the As ownership for spitting on some of the most loyal fans anywhere; but it does seem pretty chill to play pro baseball on a team with no expectations. Like if anyone does well we're all like "oh shit, check it out!"
He avoided TJS but no way that elbow holds up throwing 104mph.
How can you not be romantic about baseball
I think you have to put Nolan Ryan in that tier as well.
Ryan’s fastball definitely reached triple digits plenty, but he sat more in the 93-96 range. If he was a closer, he might’ve thrown everything 99 and up, so I’ll give you that.
11:59 Bruce sutter is my cousin who sadly passed away last year RIP Bruce
Have heard nothing but great things about him as a person. And as a pitcher? forget about it. One of the best relievers ever.
@@AndThatsBaseball He was a great person from what I heard, I never got to meet him because he grew up in PA and retired in georgia with the braves and we still live near where he grew up but not pa, maryland now he sent my family 3 HOF rings he had multiple signed pictures and 4 signed balls and that was a couple months before he passed, he passed away from a heart attack because he was a big drinker
The big issue is how long can he go with that type of velocity? Are we not going through a pitching crisis in terms of velocity, spin, and injury?
He’s ready to become a brave now
The A's have 3 pitchers in their bullpen that could be valuable trade pieces:
1) Closer: Mason Miller
2) Setup: Lucas Erceg
3) Middle Relief: Austin Adams
dudes magical, gonna be an absolutely absurd haul when he gets traded
I’m wondering how much a team would be willing to pay right now, and if the A’s would even be open to trading him.
They'd get 6 years for him right now right? I'm not too informed on the contract stuff, but a closer like him would be huge for a playoff contender. Holding a playoff spot is much easier with a dominant closer like him.
The deGrom bomb off Chris Sale is sick
New baseball fan here. Is there a reason why he only gets on the field every five days or so ?
I saw people in (Phillies sub) Reddit and they were trying to say this giy isnt worth giving up 2-3 of the top prospects. Man i swear people dont watch baseball. If anyone else can throw a pitch with that movement and speed please tell me so i can watch
my college chatham making the video is awesome!!
He's got the kind of stuff that gets a wildcard team a championship
skenes vs miller might be a classic
I'll be honest, I do not think he should start. HIs value as a reliever/closer is simply too high, and I do not think he can take a starter's workload without injury. Let him become the best closer in the game
Nice video
Thanks Finn
You gotta do one on Ryan Helsley Division 2 stud
As opposed to what others are saying, they should keep him, erceg and add on. As could have a playoff run and i believe they could make history in some odd messed up way.
Do a video about Paul Skenes please!
9:02 the last A's starter this exciting was Barry Zito
Dude is badass
Guy had to toil at a D3 school with less than 1200 students for 4 years? He probably takes great satisfaction in striking out these mlb Prima Donnas
Pitching in Oakland is like the California peniel
Pray for his UCL
The question now is when are the A’s going to trade him and what are they going to get for him?
Good for him. Thats a meteoric rise.
Imagine miller and skeenes on the same team :o
What surprise, A's having an amazing bullpen arm
We need Mason Miller on the Mariners
My next door neighbors cousin! Dad got to talk to him, awesome guy
He seems like it. Super humble dude, and it makes sense considering his story
This is why people shluld never give up
Yimi Garcia of the Blue Jays is just so dominant, i'd place him over Miller right now, Yimi has a fastball that sits 98-99 but the movement on all his pitches is insane.
I like Yimi a lot but what Miller’s doing rn is basically unprecedented. 1 hit in hitter’s last 41 ABs versus Miller and it was an infield single.
Can't wait for the Braves to call him up from their quad A team
I know it feels like half a decade but the A's have only had two terrible seasons in a row (so far). They were 10 games over 500 in 2021 and won the division in 2020.
this is like the 2022 guardians except they hit dingers
"A's fans cant have nice things."- Turer words have never been said
6:28 we just gonna ignore Jacob deGrom homering off of Chris Sale as a shortstop?
Go get him Cubs
dechambeau tried the same thing and had to basically sit out a season with injury and have multiple surgeries. Works until it doesn't. No Juice hurts.
What do you mean tried the same thing? He tried getting treatment for his diabetes? Miller is bulked up to where he naturally should be, he just wasn't able to for years because of illness.
My coach caught him at waynesburg i live near the college
Waiting to see how this guy's life/story is like Rick Vaughn's. Turns out a fictional character playing in prison and making it to the bigs vs a college student being diagnosed with diabetes and then doing what many players do in getting to the bigs are the same
2:09 that little kid looks like a stud 🙌
I’m totally not just glazing myself
2 big leaguers in one photo wow

Come to the Braves, Mason… Dew it!
Get that man over to Philadelphia

The gods reached down from the heavens, touched his right arm and turned into a thunderbolt...thats how
