I HAVE A VERY RADICAL IDEA. HOW ABOUT WE ONLY USE SCHOOLS TO TEACH CHILDREN SKILLS, FACTS, AND DEVELOP THEIR TALENTS. SO THEY CAN BE PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS WHEN THEY GROW UP

    • @Vesmir789
      @Vesmir789 Před 2 lety +22

If school was just about learning skills and facts, then there would be no problems at all with home-schooling or virtual schooling. But school is also about learning social skills, connecting with peers, developing a unique identity, learning to function in a controlled environment, having the opportunity to push boundaries, and gaining independence. All of which are greatly benefited by increasing representation and teaching kids that their identities are valid and don't need to be questioned or ridiculed.

But they are about those subjects. Meanwhile, the bible is still allowed in libraries despite its depiction of rape, murder and incest. These bills are worded ambiguously so that once passed, their real intent is revealed. As a gay man, I know exactly what these various bills around the country are trying to do. By third grade, it isn't uncommon for a student to discuss their sexual preferences in front of their peers. My four year old son attends school with a four year old girl who is openly Transgender and insists upon a feminine appearance. I live and teach in a red state. Many of these kids come from Christian homes. Every Disney film primes kids for heterosexual relationships from an early age. There is a wider spectrum out there. You aren't going to stop childhood recognition of their own preferences, but you will stop teachers from being able to show support, especially in the face of exclusion or bullying.

Now we're talking about a law that could force teachers to out such a student to their bigoted parents. But the destructive lifestyle is the fault of the parents, not the student.
There's nothing fundamentally destructive about being gay. Some people such as yourself can't accept it and will resort to any slander to justify their primitive bigotry. And it's perfectly normal that some of the material they cover in class will deal with such concepts has husbands and wives and mothers and fathers. You know this, you know that discussion of this form of sexuality is age appropriate. But this law is designed to create the fig leaf of respectability for banning the discussion of husbands and husbands and wives and wives. And here you are helping to cover for the lie by pretending that the only way to talk about this is some sort of graphic sexual discussion.
But the thing is, you know better. You know that I can be as simple as acknowledging the while some students in class have mothers and fathers, some have fathers and fathers and some may have mothers and mothers. And the entire point of this law is forbidding that because it's designed to erase the existence of LGBT people. Because the thing conservatives have learned is that if they can't blind their children to the existence of LGBT people until they've had a chance to sufficiently demonize them, their children will realize that they are lying to them. All the slander that you see repeated in the comments here will be obvious to students who have spent even a little time around fellow LGBT students. Uh, no, the bill broadly states that any instruction relating to sexual orientation or gender identity can be banned if it is deemed "not age appropriate," which can and will be exploited by anyone who dislikes the existence of queer people. Teaching about sexuality and gender identity can AND SHOULD be done as early as 5 years old, in a manner that makes sense, since research has shown that children start to recognize gender stereotypes as early as 5. But even at the bare minimum, children in grades K-3 will come to school who have same-sex parents. In order to avoid legal trouble, a school would interpret this bill to say that a teacher is not allowed to formally recognize or explain to any student that same-sex couples exist. This can be very damaging for the child.

"3. A school district may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students."
So you think we should be talking about sex and gender with primary school children?

The problem, which you do not see, is that the language is so overly broad that a whole lot of what you personally think this does not cover - another person could have a legal basis to think that it does. Moreover, it is likely to have a chilling effect as teachers who do not want the risk of being privately SUED, will over extend the parameters and pretty much stay far away from anything that could even remotely get them into trouble. It is not as benign as you think it is - even if you are sincere in your belief.

"or in a manner that is not age-appropriate". So it's not limited to primary school children, is it? It creates a wild card that can be used to apply it to any grade.
And you think we don't talk about sex and gender to primary school children? You're not familiar with primary school teachers addressing their students as "boys and girls"? Oops, just talked about gender. And sexuality, yes, better not mention that you're married because if a female teacher talks about their husband that's a discussion of sexuality, isn't it? Forbidden! It is that broad, but that's not how it's going to be enforced, we all know that. It'll be used to fire a teacher who even acknowledges having a same sex partner. It will be used to fire a teacher who tells a student that it's wrong to bully another student for being LGBT.
You talk about keeping parents in the loop. Yeah, and it keeps abusive parents in the loop too. Kids will absolutely be killed as a result of this bill. For an LGBT student raised in a bigoted family, their best chance at survival is to keep it a secret. Hide it from their parents until they can afford to move out. But this bill outs them to their parents, because the sick bastards that wrote it want those children to suffer. They want to hurt LGBT students. The entire bill makes this clear.
And by the way, sex and primary school children? I'm guessing you went to school in a state with minimal to no sex education. My state had comprehensive sex education, I was getting sex education in primary school because sexual development is starting by then. This isn't unusual, this is how to responsibly educate children. States that don't teach comprehensive sex ed have higher rates of teen pregnancy among other things.

My experience is that I was very sure of who I liked at the age of 6-7. Homosexuality isn't a disease. I something that you'll end up discoverying about yourself, like being left-handed, but you were always left-handed, even before you were able to write.
Also, you're missing the point. No one is teaching kids how to be gay - that's not a thing. Saying that gay and trans people exist and families with same sex parents exists, is not something that kids should learn only when they reach puberty. If your kid is able to learn that Johny or Sophie has a mummy and a daddy, then they are also capable of learning that Joe and Martha have two dadies or two mummies. There is no good reason to say that they shouldn't learn that as well. However when i went to school in England i had more gay experience with people other boys there although
The teachers were horrible a lot of gay stuff went on
And it happens to me at a mixed school where they were girls lol and when i went to an all boys nothing happened sad but true.
At the all boys school in England i actually knew a gay
Student who walked around openly gay and even had a partner there the students name was dudridge and his
Suspected partner was a boy named Ricky Flied
They were like a gay couple and they actually walked around holding hands with each other and nobody bullied them they were teased and laughed at
But no other kids bullied them at that was in England in
1978 i remember i was a bit envious of them at the time.
I found being gay there was excepted and even tolerated there in the 1970s

I went to school in the 80s and 90s. It was still bad. I didn't know a single "out" LGBT student, because they knew it wasn't safe to be out. I'm sure they were there, but they were still hiding. I suspect one of my two best friends was asexual, but he didn't have the framework to understand it at the time. Or he may have been gay, it's hard to tell from the distance of all those years. I wish I could have understood him better, or for that matter I wish he could have understood himself better.
I'm not saying everything is better now, but I'm shocked at how quickly things changed. Bills like this are an attempt by the GOP to turn back time. They don't have any positive agendas to pursue, to they're trying to recapture their favorite minority to hurt by trying to push them back into the closet. But I don't think it'll work. I'm not saying this won't hurt children, it will. But for the most part it's too late. The students are already visibly rejecting this attempt to use them in the culture war. It will only further serve to separate the younger generation from the Republican party. Future voters are seeing laws like this and realizing that they want nothing to do with a party that would support them.

I can’t believe how people are so easily coerced into believing what their told to believe. This bill neither states that teachers can’t talk about gay topics nor does it ban it talking about gay topics. The bill bans classroom discussions on ANY sexual orientation or preferences between pre-k and third grade including a heterosexual or homosexual teacher talking about the spouse(any and all discussions about those preferences are not to be discussed due to their age not being able to comprehend the topic) if a kid asks about these topics, THEIR PARENTS ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD HAVE THAT DISCUSSION WITH THEM! It also states that teachers cannot inform a student to not speak with their parents about medical topics such as the students sexual orientation or preferences but also includes something as simple as a kid getting hurt from something the school could be sued over and a teacher saying to not tell their parents. NOW, the bill does allow teachers to have discussions with 1 or more students NOT in a classroom setting(class full of kids being taught curriculum) about these topics such as heterosexual or homosexual thoughts or feelings BUT the parents are still required to be notified about the discussion AS IT SHOULD BE, because otherwise it’s inappropriate and honestly suspect.
This idea that teachers should be allowed to talk privately with a student/s about these topics and keep it from the parents is criminal and very inappropriate. Teachers may have daily interactions with these kids but they are still aquanauts NOT SOMEONE YOU SHOULD SHARE THESE TOPICS WITH, My coworkers may not be strangers but the idea of telling these people your secrets is insane. There are people in your life that you interact with but don’t need to have secret conversations with and teachers/coaches/coworkers are one of them. This idea that parents should be left out of their child’s education and problems and the state(government) should raise them instead is honestly terrifying.

It bans it between k-3, " or in a manner that is not age appropriate". That gives them a wild card that allows them to ban it in any grade they wish, for any reason.
And BTW, if it bans ANY discussion on sexual oritentation, do you think it bans any mention of hetero marriage? If it bans discussion of gender identity, does it ban the use of terms like "boys and girls"? How is that even possible?
If it was evenly enforced it would. But we all know it won't be enforced that way. It will be used only to discriminate against a minority, cis/het people will be exempt from it.

You hit the nail on the head. I'm convinced this push by the alphabet soup lobby to get them while they're young has nothing to do with teaching acceptance and everything to do with indoctrination and predatory grooming. By normalizing explicit sexual content and exploration at such a young age, they make these kids much more open to sexual experimentation... and I'd bet many of these teachers would be more than happy to "guide" them through that.
