As a five year old boy living in the house beside the empty lot of the curling rink in Innisfail, the day was filled with wonder and probably fear. Most of the people volunteering are now gone - but great piece of work. I saw my father in the co-ordination center in "Churchill's" garage at just after 3;59. The lot where the dinner was prepared and served was usually never empty. Shortly after that the oil and gas discovery in the area the lot was filled with seismic trucks and labs. Followed by the survey crews staking and working on the new highway 2 which was built between Calgary and Red Deer.

I don't remember this but I remember some of the things that were done during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Evacuation routes were designated and printed in the paper. Our family was to head north on 14 Street NW which was a gravel road. Students has to time themselves as they ran home to supposedly join family and evacuate - we had to provide the time it took to run from the school to our homes. There was a lot of programming on TV about the danger and the possible direction that the crisis could go. Calgary was a lot smaller then and I don't know how Calgary would be evacuated now given the population.

I find it fascinating the similarities and differences between the civil defence preparations in different countries.

The most striking thing about this film is that a family with 5 children is being supported on a single income. That feels so weird to me as a millennial. It's also interesting to compare and contrast this film with USA civil defense films. Fascinating stuff.

12:14 If a picture tells a thousand words, something tells me they don’t “like the meals just fine”. Those scowls and faces of uncertainty paint a picture of what the heck am I putting down my gullet here” 😂😂😂😂

VERY FEW people know that the "Diefenbunker" for Calgary City Council is actually the old Centennial Planetarium right beside Mewata Armouries! Every window is deep set thick Lead Glass and all the curtains are lead lined. The extra-thick concrete has extra reinforcement steel and everything is curved, doorways are offset, and angles everywhere to dissipate any blast waves.

Bunkers don’t have windows and CGY had its own underground bunker. Do you have any documentation supporting your claim?

@@CanadianCivilDefenceMuseum The basement is actually the Bunker - the "Public" portion is basically to minimize the damage to the basement, and (hopefully) give some relatively safe office space to work in afterwards, while the Pleiades Theatre would have been the Councilroom and Emergency HQ. Most of the building is 3-4 foot thick concrete, and much is buried beneath a hill - WAY too solid for a normal 2 story building! It also has it's own generator facility and filtered air.
No better place to hide something than right in public view!
It was not meant to take a direct hit, but could survive a near miss. I don't have any actual documentation, but I knew many people who worked there over the years, and this was common knowledge among those who worked there, and openly talked about.

What about the Civil Defence bunker in this video that was at the golf course?

@@CanadianCivilDefenceMuseum The Planetarium was built in 1966/67, so it was 10 years later. I'm not familiar with one at any Golf Course - I'd never even heard of it. I do know that the Planetarium (Officially the Calgary Centennial Planetarium) was never outfitted for any attack, and all the spaces were used for storage, workshops, etc.
I do know of the one started near Canmore (even later), but never finished , and Edmonton had one well west of the city, but the Planetarium is the only one I know of in the Calgary area. I'd love to know more of the one you mention! Which Golf Course?

This whole thing is based upon a bomber attack. Just a few years after this film, with ICBM's operational, they scrapped any/all "evacuation" plans or drills. Still, I think the effort was worthwhile. People need to be prepared.

KurtB when did Russia develop a ICBM?

Approximately 1956 or 1957... the R7. That is the vehicle that put Sputnik into orbit. The reason the USSR beat the USA into space was because soviet warheads of 1957 were MUCH heavier than those of the USA, hence the vehicle designed to deliver it was necessarily much larger. The Soviets used it and generated a publicity coup.

Impressive. There are no civil defence measures in UK now for the general public. Not even any sirens. If there is a nuclear attack it is game over for most people, including myself.
