Created in the 1950s, "Food Supply After the Bomb" examines the aftermath of an atomic attack, and posits what the response might be from civilians and government officials. The devastation to America's food production areas, and the food and drinking water shortages that would follow as a result of contamination, is dramatized. Rationing would be a necessity, and each American home should (according to the narrator) keep at least a ten day supply of food on hand in an "Emergency Food Box" filled with canned goods.
While somewhat ridiculous in the light of history, the issues presented by this film remain relevant today.

Gas type cooking methods are not approved by testing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They discovered that the blast from a bomb renders gas compressed cylinders dangerous to occupants of different types of shelters. It is recommended to use an alternative source, like candles, or a bucket stove, to prepare foods. Preference is given to foods that do not require cooking. This is especially true if a shelter has limited ventilation.

+watershed44 You are so right about your comment! After my experience with hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Jean, in many parts of this CD film has shown to be true during those hurricanes and a couple of weeks after. In my area we were without power for three weeks even though we are part of the city of Orlando. During that time, for just a couple of days, if service stations had power for the gas pumps, they were actually rationed gas to 5 gallons per vehicle and no gas cans allowed. Also for several days ice was actually rationed to just one bag per adult. The other surrounding counties were in the same situation. I was smart enough to buy extra non perishable groceries, a generator (at the last minute) and topped off the gas tanks in the vehicles and the gas cans. That generator wound up supplying barely enough of the power to three houses for just a refrig, two fans, and two lights for each house which included mine.

We were miserable. I am a Floridian and used to muggy hot weather. However, the ice cold showers really sucked. I bought 100' of black garden hoses and threw on the roof for solar water heating. Then snaked the hose through a open bathroom window. The problem was the water was too hot coming directly out of the hose during the day. So we wound up having the shower supply the cold water with the garden hose supply the hot water. The hose was zipped tied to the shower head. We could only take basically a "spit" bath. If we were smart, we should have gone up to S.C. for a couple of weeks then come back down....

Sorry for the delay of response. There was a Derech that hit part of the Midwest on Monday, and I live in one harder hit parts of the disaster. Almost no one has power, the trees are all shredded, most of the roads are unblocked at this point, plenty of houses have been damaged (I have seen a few beyond repair, and know many families that have had to move out)... But people have been working together to get things cleaned up. I've been working 10-12 hour days...
A single nuclear weapon might not be much worse (excluding initial loss of life). Simply look at either of two cities that have been hit with nuclear weapons.
But even with a full fledged attack, people would still rebuild and want to live. I suspect within a decade or less, civilization would return.
One of the greatest evils of our world has been giving people the view that nuclear war could only be "Hell on Earth".

Notice the lady was NOT packing away bottles of store bought water, but straight from her tap and into a mason jar? Thanks for the video.A few weeks ago, water was going to be shut off for several blocks while water main was being worked on for 8 hours. Brother got into a semi-panic: what are we going to do, what are we going to do? How do we flush the toilets? Said I wasn't worried because I've got about 100 gallons stored in either empty 2 liter soda bottles and 4 cases of bottled water. Him: oh, you mean your Trump water. When I was a child in NYC in the late 50s and early 60s I distinctly remember milk coming in either glass bottles (most common right into the 70s) and waxed paper cartons with an attached stopper, not the "gable top" design that's common today. The waxed paper carton stoppers were actually stapled on with small wire staples. They were great for use as fire starters when empty and many a campfire was started with one of those. I'm trying to remember exactly when we switched over to the gable top design that was coated paper, not waxed. I remember it being a pretty big deal when it happened and not everyone liked them because they had a reputation for leaking. Probably why bottles continued on for so long. We were still living in Manhattan at the time, so that would make it prior to 1966. I'm going to say it was probably 1964 or '65 then.

If you look at the duck and cover films, the biggest fear seemed to be blast, glass shards, and fire. Downrange fallout and long term radiation effects weren't fully understood.

They say after 10 days normal food resupply should begin again. Well, I think they are a little optimistic here. Maybe after 10 years? Maybe 100 years? Radiated fields, EMP destroying power grid, EMP destroying computers hooked up to it, looting, rioting, starvation, and more? 10 days is a bit optimistic unless the enemy only drops 1 bomb. If they drop lets say 100 of them with 7 used at high altitude for EMP effect, 43 used as surface blast to destroy military assets and the remaining 50 used to destroy population and economic centers, then we add in Fallout and nuclear winter for just 1-3 years, I doubt 10 days to restore food supply is realistic? I love these old films and most of the information is as valid today as it was then, they just did not know about todays electronics and the full effect of atmospheric clouds of dust suspended for several years.

    • @derpymcderpello5381
      @derpymcderpello5381 Před 24 dny

EMP doesn't have much to do with food resupply. Most of the radiation will decay in just a few weeks. If nuclear winter even does happen, it would end very quickly. If multiple bombs dropped, I dont think grocery stores would be restored in just 10 days, but it certainly wouldn't be 10 years.

don't forget the lead Solder they used in making the cans back then, eating canned foods back then can cause lead poisoning.+++don't forget the raw meat can be dried, smoked or packed in salt to preserve it, you would need a LOT of salt, iodized salt to be specific

6:13 Obviously a Karen, but the whole food shortage thing is that after the event of nuclear devastation,
Food Sources are scarce due to radioactive contamination of livestock and plant supply, hence Rationing being a term for having enough food to feed a family, not buying everything at once.

I had an uncle who lived in a suburb of Dallas. This was a few years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the talk turned to Tornado Preparedness. I made a suggestion of looking up the bomb shelter designs they had in Popular Mechanics & Popular Science as well as numerous other magazines, they looked at me wondering why I, a 11 year old boy was speaking during an adult conversation....
I pointed out that if it could ride out a H-Bomb 5 or so miles away, then it should ride out a tornado! I did mention that they wouldn't need the fancy air filters which would save money. They stopped and I could tell they were thinking about it, my mom suggested that I go and find where S. (male cousin a few hours older than me) was.
Next day (my uncle was on vacation so he could be with us while we visited him and other relatives in Texas) went to the public library and got the plans copied.
He later let my mother (his sister) and father know that one of the neighbors was mocking him a lot for the hole in the ground, and the building of the shelter. A Lot!!
However, next spring when a big tornado hit the area, he called us as soon as he could and let us know that he and his family were alright. Also the Mocker and his family beat him to the shelter and was waiting for him to unlock it!!!

You know, this portrays a family being able to sit together again around a dinning room and eating normally with full plate servings. While normalcy maintains mental stability, in reality, that food supply is going to have to be rationed and stretched beyond the serving suggestions of most of those goods are labeled for.
While today’s store bought meal kits are years ahead in nutritional and shelf life, rationing is what will help that family survive in the long run beyond the projected figures presented here.
I see young Timmy can’t use a knife to tease the ketchup bottle, what a failure of a human that can’t use tools to make things easier for himself. Or maybe he knows Father has been feeling inadequate after the bomb dropped, and will hand it to him to indulge his father to slap the bottom of the ketchup bottle to sauce Timmy’s food.

as Floridians know from personal experience, natural disasters can take their toll. so you should have at least 3 weeks worth of food and water s well as methods of purification on hand, though 3 months would be a wiser course.just remember to rotate your stocks every three months or so. eat what you store, and store what you eat.
