During the 1940s, Disney was doing many cartoons for the war effort and also musical revue films like "Make Mine Music". "Cinderella" was the first return to fairy tales post-war. It was a huge hit. My uncle was best friends with Eleanor Audley who voiced the stepmother. I have an autographed photo from her and it's one of my prized possessions.
I really love the subtlety of Cinderella's character in the movie. Yes she's very sweet and gentle but you also have all these great moments like that bit of sass with the second sliper or where she's clearly frustrated or upset about a situation even when she knows she can't do anything cus she's trapped in this abusive household.
Also, Cinderella 3 is kinda hilarious and gives the prince a few funny moments and I would argue is one of the few Disney princess sequels worth watching
Apparently there was a planned scene after the ball where Cinderella's stepsister discussed the beautiful girl at the ball as she secretly snickered. They felt it might make her unlikable.
I heartily agree - A Twist In Time is an *excellent* movie, against all expectations.

You should absolutely do Sleeping Beauty next! It came out a bit after this one I believe and the artwork and music is stunning
Cinderella three is definitely worth checking out. The Prince gets more screen time and more of a you also really get to find out what happens afterwards with the characters even the mice you mentioned. I like that you also mentioned that her dress looked kind of wedding-ish, because in the film, it’s actually silver, and once they came out with merchandise and also later on for the Disney princess line, they saw that flaw, and made the dress more of a blue tone so that they wouldn’t be “selling wedding dresses to young girls“

The reason Prince Charming doesn’t get much screen time is because the animators were still perfecting animating handsome men. Future Disney films perfected this and thus allowed the male heroes to get more of a focus. The 2015 remake of “Cinderella” also gave the Prince much more of a personality and he meets and bonds with Cinderella before the Ball. Great reaction to a Disney classic! The animals were always my favorite part as a kid as well!
Prince Charming has personality in the original film
I always thought Prince Charming was a kind of cypher so we could imagine whatever kind of man we wanted in that role. 🤷♀️😄
believe it or not, Snow White was released in 1937, 13yrs before Cinderella and is absolutely worth watching! You might also enjoy Enchanted, which pokes fun at the ridiculousness of the Disney Princess movies. It is about a cartoon princess who becomes human and winds up in the real world. It's really quite funny and has some great music too!
The background artwork throughout this movie and Sleeping Beauty is among the most beautiful Disney has ever done. And the animation holds up to this day. They did such amazing workwith the tools they had.
The Disney Princess/Animal trope is more or less explained by their kindness and purity of heart.
Someone did a study counting all the lines spoken by male and female characters in all the Disney Princess movies (this happened before Moana so it doesn’t include Moana) and found that Cinderella was the only movie with an equal number of male and female lines spoken. All the other movies were male line spoken dominant (including Frozen because of all the male side characters or one off lines spoken by men/boys).
*laughs* No, Walt Disney loved bringing stories from books to life. Most of the animated stories are reimaginings of legends, fairy tales, and very loosely based on history (looking at you, Pocahontas). He also directed a ton of live action films that were based on books, like the Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island, and Mary Poppins to name a few. Even Frozen was loosely based off of Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen. The so-called "Disney dead parent" trope is actually because most of the fairy tales HAD that as part of the story.
I don’t think Cinderella ever imagined that someone she had a connection with would want to marry her. So when she heard that there was, AND THAT HE WAS THE PRINCE! I would’ve been in a daze too

But for real, I will forever love the scene where her stepsisters rip her dress to shreds. I mean imagine the trauma of having people viciously rip at your clothing like savage animals while hurling verbal abuse at you. It's a lot 😮
It took me 6 years to get pregnant with my daughter - I had several losses before she came along, and a couple after her.
Over the years, while struggling through all of it, the song, "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" would pop into my head. I still can't hear it without crying (happy tears...my rainbow came smiling through), and my daughter gets pretty emotional as well. She doesn't know all of the ins and outs her dad and I went through to have her, but she knows it wasn't easy.

I would have liked Prince Charming to talk more, but he does in later movies, but I somewhat liked the mystery to him.
The fairy godmother already explained it when cinderella was crying "if you lost all your hope, I wouldn't be here" so cinderella's hope made the fairy godmother appear. It's a fairy tale so there isn't really a logical reason why.
Usually I prefer a more active Cinderella (Like Danielle in Ever After, who is excellent) but my favorite part in this movie is when she pulls out that second slipper and has that smug look on her face, which wouldn't have been as effective if she were more proactive to start with, so that's cool. Also, of course, the stepmother is voiced by Eleanor Audley who did Maleficent in the Disney Sleeping Beauty, so...love the villain in this too.
After their dance, they talked, had a romantic stroll, and during the ball.
At first, he yawned subtly but pointedly to his father to say ‘this is stupid and boring, see it’s not working.’ And then he spots Cinderella😂

The thing that people seem to not understand about Cinderella is this, back in the timeframe this movie would've taken place in, running away from a bad home life wasn't really an option (or at least not a good option) for women. Cinderella being the kind, good-hearted & optimistic person she is, didn't really want to run away from her home. She wasn't happy to be treated the way she was in her own home but, she always looked for the bright side in life. So as a result, her goal was just to attend the ball. To have one night where she didn't have to do chores & just have fun dancing, socializing & eating good food that the palace would've served to guests. Meeting & falling in love with a guy she met at the ball, who just happened to be the prince, was the cherry on top of that one special night.
fun fact- the cinderella transformation from tattered pink dress to beautiful ballgown was walt disney's favorite piece of animation.
Women used to wear these basket-like hoop things under their dresses called a bustle. The sisters have big bouncy butts because their bustles are being exaggerated for comedic flouncy effect lol. I think it’s supposed to emphasize how much they’re throwing themselves at the Prince.
This film actually violated the Hays Code, the film rules at the time. One of the things it forbade was silhouetted nudity which is shown in the beginning.
There are so many versions if the fairy tale of Cinderella.
The brother Grimm’s version is the most famous I think, and very dark. The stepsisters cut off their heel and toes to fit tje slippers!

25:53 that’s the dressing style at the time. Cinderellas dress was a bit old fashioned because the extra fabric was on the side instead of the back. Something to do with the illusion of a smaller waist and other sorts.

3- As a brazilian, it was fun to watch it in english. In portuguese, in the mice's song, they call her Cinderella and not Cinderelly (and I don/t know why)
4- I personally thinks that this is basically a story of a girl who is a slave in her own home and scapes to have some fun at a ball, and ocasionally meets the prince
Prince Charming is in Snow White. The prince in Cinderella has no name. They call him his highness, the prince.

I got the role of the prince in our middle school play of this movie. I went back and watched and was outraged the prince had virtually no lines or scenes he’s literally just a stand in for Cinderellas ticket out of that house, he doesn’t need a personality lmao

The bustles. They were in fashion in the mid-late 19th century.
Same thing basically with the prince in "Snow White", you barely know anything about him, and he's on screen a very short amount of time. That's why "Frozen" jokes about how you can't marry a man you just met because these older movies often had the princess do just that.

If you watched this oldie but goodie, you really should watch Disney’s 1st fairytale feature film, Snow White, for context if nothing else, but it is very well done & every scene is hand drawn: no computers in 1937! The other early Disney fairytale I really love is Sleeping Beauty. The background scenes are so stylized, they set the whole movie off by itself. Plus the Sleeping Beauty Waltz is one of my very favorite classical pieces & they gave it lovely lyrics. I hope you’ll give these 2 Disney films a chance!

If you don't mind musicals, Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella might interest you. It got a lot of criticism at the time for it's diversity in the cast (a black Cinderella, an asian prince, the King & Queen being a mixed race couple, the stepsisters being different ethnicities...)
If the multiculturalism of the third version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's *Cinderella* (1997) disturbs you, there are two previous versions with lily-white casts: the original 1957 version starring Julie Andrews, and the 1965 remake starring Lesley Ann Warren. All of them are worth seeing.

@@zoeadams2635 No accusation intended. I just wanted to mention, for those who weren't aware, that the other versions exist. Each has a different script, a different cast featuring notable stars, and includes some songs that the others don't.
Dang, at first I was surprised that Cinderella was black in that version, until I remembered these are the same guys who did _South Pacific_ and _The King & I,_ so I guess it checks out.

About the Prince. During this days you had tight budget and time. Just making this movie toke years and millions of dollars. When developing this movies they went with the simple Brother Grimms tale. The main character is Cinderella, the point is all from her perspective. The Prince is the finish line a end to her goal for freedom.
All we need to know is her struggle. And when doing this movies, sure Disney went straight but they had to fill it out with things to entertain the audience so the mice got very fleashed out as characters being a B plot that drives the main plot forward. And again budget and time. It was funnier to have the King and Duke be silly characters. The Prince had to be stoic and not quirky which sadly turns boring for most people. So they felt it was enough driving force to have Cinderella while the Prince is more of a goal. And it is a simple romantic story where the lovestory ain´t complicated.
That is the perspective I have for older movies. But I have´t watched many movies from this times except for Disney movies.

This is hardly peak Disney in terms of animation, but at least it’s hand drawn. And does the fact that the Prince barely says a word make this movie “woke”? 😂. Disney around this time wasn’t big on plot. It was about emotional journeys rather than storytelling. But I appreciate any movie that wasn’t made by a computer nerd.
1) Why the stepsisters' butts look like that: this story takes place in the 18th century, when the most desired silhouette in women's fashion was flat chest + big bottom. This was achieved by wearing stiff, flattening corset under the bodice and something called "a bumroll" under the skirt. (basically a pillow that you place on top of your butt to make it look huge.) Women would also wear crinoline (a bell-shaped wire structure) and lots of petticoats under their dresses, making the contrast between waist and hips even bigger.
2) Why the prince doesn't speak/have a personality: the original story was taken from Grimm's Fairy Tales, a german collection of folk tales. The folk tale is from a time when women had very little freedom, they were basically owned by the men in their life. Fathers would literally sell their daughters to the best offer and women would have no money of their own. So in that context, it makes sense that the prince wouldn't really talk much to her as an equal - or even be interested about her personality. And it would make sense that Cinderella wants to marry a stranger, because he was her way to escape the abuse at home.
just a few corrections: Disney's cinderella is set in the 19th century, and judging by the way the characters are dressed its somewhere between 1850s/1880 . the reason the stepsisters' butts look like that is because they are wearing a bustle, which is a type of crinoline. (that being said, the animators took a lot of artistic liberties and all the dresses are inspired by wildly different time periods )

It really makes no sense. Gus would usually be short for Augustus. Octavius might be abbreviated as Ockie or Tavie, but I don't see how Gus can be derived from it.
Plus the line “leave the sewing to the women” shows that it was really made 73 years ago

Yes but people probably assume it isn’t in Spain since Cinderella doesn’t sound especially Spanish. You’re right that they seemed to have international delegates at the ball! Maybe Cinderella said she was Spanish and I just forgot? Otherwise I get the surprise lol.
