Your explanation is incomplete without the physical setup of electrical potential wiring, hence the conclusions are incomplete or wrong. The electrical potential configuration is of critical importance to this experiment and cannot be understood without clear understanding of what electricity is and its behaviour.

that is electrically relative charge
this means that sign does not matter.
This, however is opposed to magnitudally relative charge which is -1 with respect to proton. this is where magnitude does not matter
