A Decent Vise For My Rosa Drill Press | Restoration

- This vise came for free with the Rosa drill press I restored a couple weeks back. This kind of vises are most commonly used on mills but I decided to clean this up and get it back to use anyway because it's very solid, with very little play and overall well made. URSUS is a quality italian brand, same brand as the other italian vise I restored a while back (FZA).
The vise was already in pretty good shape, with just one broken bolt in the fixed jaw. Unfortunately it's made of cast iron, so there's not much I can do to fix the various drill holes on the bottom. The only fix I can think of would be some kind of epoxy resin as you can't weld holes in cast iron, not with stick welding at least! Of coure it can be brazed but I don't have the skill and equipment to do so at the moment.
Index of operation and materials:
0:11 Penetrating oil
1:20 I thought this was a dovetail... Time to engage brain!
2:20 Degreaser
2:47 Remove the thin film of rust on the exposed cast iron with wire wheel (cast iron does not rust deeply)
3:16 Small wire bit on the die grinder helps with hard to reach areas
3:31 Nitro solvant to degreas and clean before paint
3:35 Hammered finish black paint, same as the drill press
Clean small parts easily with ultrasonic cleaner
4:18 15min in nitro solvant to degreat and clean
4:40 15min in rust removal fluid to remove any rust
I use plastinc cups so I don't have to fill the entire ultrasonic cleaner with chemicals
5:15 Blackening the parts with cold blue
5:34 Final coat of oil
5:47 Cleaning threads with appropriate size tap
6:18 More degreaser
7:18 Thin anti-seize oil applied to all exposed steel surfaces
Making fixture for the drill press T slot
9:40 5mm thick mild steel bar stock
9:50 Cut two pieces with metal cutting band saw
10:05 Drill necessary holes
10:33 Tap for M8 bolt
10:46 Cut cornes and smooth those out with the 2x72 belt grinder
11:15 Removing mill scales and zinc coating from hardware with muriatic acid.
If you are looking to do this use care, do it outside in ventilated area and with all ppe, it's very bad stuff.
11:34 Neutralize acid with sodium bicarbonate
11:46 More cold blue

Amazing
Nice !
Whh didnt you weld cover those horrible drill holes in the base ?
black beard : i watch these videos in mind being that i was a guy who tore down engines air tools and hydraulic equipment and did some machine work it looks great i love this kind of stuff but on this video (again i know everyone is a critic) and i dont mean to be but i would of filled in the holes that have been drilled in the vice (welded and remachined) and used a caustic vat and then bead blasted everything and then oiled the parts and painted it on this project it seems like it could have saved you a lot of steps
You actually can stick weld cast iron. You need a preheat and post heat cycle, and use Nickel 99 rods.
I'm very happy to see a drill press vise. It's such a sadly overlooked but important piece of safety equipment in the shop.
I like that you use the thing you're restoring to make parts for itself
I love the simple black!! Great work my friend!
Multiple times watching this. Still a perfect restoration Alex
Looks like the previous owner didn't know when to stop drilling.
clearly he had the piece flush with the vise and wanted a through hole. That's pretty basic.
He should probably have used a sacrificial piece of something underneath (sacrificial = that will be damaged / destroyed during the process, per design)
I was hoping he was going to fill in those drill spots.
@@xl000 "He should probably have used a sacrificial piece of something underneath"
Or some parallels.
The guy who did that wasn't the owner. You see this in shops and factories all the time. Employees treat the boss's equipment like left over dog turds because they resent the fact that they're not the boss.
@@BedsitBob Parallels on a drill press?
Dude. you must be the type of guy to use the most excessive ways to solve your problems.
Beautiful tool 😍 nicely restored. You are very talented Mr. Black beard 👊👌👍
Subscribed I would be glad if you subscribe me too 😉😉 Great videos btw 👍🏼
I am impressed that you manage to keep your work top clean.
I have two bits of advice. The first is to use JB Weld to fill all those drill holes. The second is to buy or make a set of parallels to help with your drilling. Great video and the blueing came out really well.
Excellent practical maintenance for a nice little vise
No blow torching! No big chemical tubs playing Tetris with!! No remaking tons of little bits!!! You must have been bored as hell the other morning LOL! Great stuff!
Nicely done! A very positive addition to that cool drill press. The hold down clamps were an unexpected but very sweet addition as well!
He doesnt have a moving bed tho, so I think mounting it solid will be an inconveniance in the long run...
Nice tear down and clean up. Beautiful restoration.

Thanks for the details in the description. Like the blueing process. Nice work.
Nicely done!
Most important, one more vise is saved 👍😄
I love the way u take a part the drill press and assemble it again
Who thought he would weld up those divots and resurface it on the milling machine? You do great work brother!
I want to know how everyone of these guys restoring equipment can hammer at the same speed
It's just a skill we just sort of pick up... cus we're always hammerin hammerin!!
It's called the spinning thumb hold. Makes for faster repetitive hits. lol----JK. 👍
Tom Skaggs hammerite invented it
@@fargogemini694 Great invention. How many times did you hit your thumb before you perfected the working model? lol
I would rather know how is hammering on something considered a restoration? Almost everyone on youtube is doing a cleanjob and painting.
I love it my Brother you are the Master of Restoration for sure,I will see your awesome videos again later much love Family and take care :)
Beautiful work!-both press and vise! Enjoyed watching!
Bravo, bravo, bravo, awesome..., Well done, you are an artist, unique and perfectly work, master done, It's a pleasure to watch this work! respect from the old BG. sori for my english.
Hi BB. Another super job and a new awesome vice to go with your awesome awesome drill press Rosa. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 👍
Perfect for one you plan to use!!! Really nice job!
Well done, Sir! Looks perfect on the Rosa drill press.
Vise - the most fabulous of tools.
Again a wonderful restoration man! :) The vice looks so pretty!
What a nice vice design! Great restoration!
Looks like a nice quality vice, well done!
Beautiful restoration, Excellent job 👏👍
Ursus and Rosa: A perfect marriage!
Another good restoration. I enjoy your tool restoration videos. It's great when you bring a neglected high quality tool back to a useful life. This vise will be a useful complement to the Rosa drill, whose restorationI also enjoyed. This vise looks like it is a good precision tool. The jaws fit well. Keep up the tool restoration videos. They are fun and informative Best regards from the USA.
I enjoyed this. Looks like a very high quality vice!
Thank you my friend!
Sweet little vise and good job rebuilding it.Thanks for sharing.
Excellent work.
What a nice piece it became :)
Love the work you do at fixing and make great job
Nonostante ti sia costato un duro lavoro, beh per contro mi sono rilassato moltissimo. L’audio del video è ipnotizzante!!! Un abbraccio ragazzo d’oro!!!
Iit was a great video but I was surprized that you fill the holes that had been drilled in the base. Rregards Russell
That was excellent, and very nice work. You have a good pair of hands.
Fantastic videos from an avid watcher from the UK
Usually I'd agree with you but not so much this time 🤫🤫🤫.
Great idea on the dogs you made to hold the vise... now I have to do the same. Love the channel..!
This guy must live on Endor because you can hear the speeder bikes roaring past!
Very nice job and great vice
Yes!!!!!! Another awesome video!!!!
Very good job 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Excelent, marca URSUS !!!
I like the time lapses of the acid bath and the ultrasonic cleaner. Also, your trick of putting the cup of cleaner into the water bath of the ultrasonic is very clever. Thanks for sharing.
Great job!
Nice job.Excellent
great job was good congratulations good professional you are👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
Awesome video!
Fantastically done
Another awesome vise restoration Sir!!!!!!!!!!
Magnificent as ever.
Ursus from Poland.........good joob
I would love to find a vice like that, you're lucky!
Nice work... amazing as usual
pretty rad restoration; still i would have welded the old holes :). Thanks for sharing! :)
Juan Sebastian Muñoz Arango I think I know why he didn’t- the surface on which the top piece slides must be dead flat, or else it won’t close and hold properly. Getting that repair to be both clean and straight with most hand tools simply isn’t going to happen.
Besides, he might drill into it again by accident.
Great job and your drill looks awesome. For a quick fix on my vintage meddings i repaired the over shot craters on the table with chemical metal , it was only going to be a temporary job but 5 years on and it still looks the part so ive left it .
Well done. It appears you even restored that drill press. Once restored, I think the old equip. is superior to the new stuff.
That’s a a sweet looking vise. I envy you..
Nice vice 👍
Ursus is frome Poland:-D. Gj man in restoring
I dunno why, but it's always funny to me when someone uses vise to restore a vise.
why ?
I used the vise to destroy the vise
Yes, I'm with you mate; he should have used *_his teeth_* in order to be a true believer. It's ridiculous that restorers use actual tools made out of (heaven forbid) *_metal_* UGH!
When you make home brew? don't you have one while doing so ?
Excellent restore!
Wow that turned out so nice
Nice vise and a nice restoration!
That will be a helpful tool for sure.
No piękny zestaw kolego!!! Łapa leci w górę!!😁😁😁
Very nice job:)

Вот что значить,не лениться,респект тебе Дружище!

Good work 👍
Another great video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Nice work and very useful.
Nice job
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
What are your thoughts on this being powered coated with a filling primer, because the paint used didn't eliminate any imperfections (although you may have wanted it that way.
Great. So nice restoration
Great work.. Ciao
Badass! Way cool.
Nice job bro, very cool
Good job
Cool use of the sonic cleaner I’m gonna do the same
I wish the cross slide on my tiny lathe was as rugged as that vise!
Fantastic,
Зачётные тисочки👍
Excelente trabalho parabéns 👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Nice! Great addition to the shop, thanks for sharing.
