Goggins handled that pretty well. He didn't tear down that professor for saying his opinion, but he did give an on point perspective from having going through something like that in his past in the Navy Seals.
In my humble opinion, that type of comment coming from a professor is incredibly reflective of the cotton candy privileged world some people think we live in nowadays. How an intellectual of that supposed caliber could be ignorant about the realities and necessities of war baffles me

@@awolr yeah, im not american but im very fond of your armed forces and I'd like to see them keep up their rigerous and brutally tough to attain standards because how else can you form the type of soldier whos ready to deal with the harsh realities of war. Same goes for my armed forces in the UK, weve had and have truly excellent armed forces too but we're also in the same danger of losing our edge if we allow the snowflakes to soften up the process.
These people just dont think I really mean it. Dont they know if you lower the bar you lower the quality and by extention you lower the safety and security of your nation. It causes me so much frustration seeing their short-sightedness

I tweeted to Jocko Willink about 2 years ago and asked how he keeps going, he just replied with simplicity he said "move the bar, just move the bar"
I didn't initially understand what he meant, but then the penny dropped, he was telling me to stop thinking about it, stop overthinking, think about my age, to never stop.

I already know I'm going to be rewatching this episode all year. Goggins hits different for those of us that realize life is primarily a battle against mastering self
Spent one year in military special service in Finland. The point of the training is to push you to your limits and way beyond, because in actual combat situations you must be able to handle extreme physical and mental stress.
Exactly.
That's some real shit right there--hardness is a perishable skill.

Fantastic answer ... this man is a warrior and a sage.
Goggins will always be my inspiration.
They exposed you to gas in Navy basic training as well. We were instructed repeat our first general order to ensure full exposure. This immediately conditioned you to take that sort of attack very seriously.
SEAL's are all tough cookies but Goggins is on another level.
If you're intending to send a person into battle, where there is chance that they may be killed, is it really kind to go soft on them in training?
Chris it’s fantastic to see how much your podcast has progressed!
I couldn’t agree more with David, not everyone understands you! 🙏
I like how he’s trying to explain to people how they’re much weaker than the soldiers that need to be battle ready but in a way that doesn’t humiliate them, yet the implications still remain that they couldn’t understand the need for strength since they’re weak. While living in a society in which they can stay weak with no consequences.
Yet youre not making strong soldiers..... youre creating psychopaths.... What good does it do a recuit to tell him who gives a fk if your mommy died go dig her up and use her as a body shield....to mentally toughen them up then you wonder why they cant function in society and do 13 tours lmfao
The Twitter situation is completely different. Being asked to work harder for the same money to make one of the worlds richest men richer is not the same as using tear gas on special forces recruits who could potentially be captured and tortured and would have to take extreme pain. And just to clarify, I'm a 55 year old firefighter who does Crossfit five times a week, and am training for two marathons this year. I believe in hard work, as long as it has the proper rewards.
Twitter employees had the easiest job in the world meanwhile there’s hungry coders/ programmers ready to work just to make half of what the employees at Twitter make. Elon made the right move

These Navy Seals should go through this excruciating training. It will for sure save some of their lives and give more confidence to the others. When you're in a situation where your friend has his arm and leg blown off next to you your other friends and Associates are currently shooting at enemies and you have a mission to complete all while knowing more enemies at anytime could appear or kill you. Most people won't understand the amount of fear and stress you will go through in times like this and with that being said you have to have a mind that is condition to fear and Chaos you have to have a mind that has been tested time and time again pushing you to do things that you didn't think you can do forcing you to survive things you didn't think you could survive. If you train this way and the time comes where you are put in a chaotic horrible scary situation your mind can stay calm or at least calm enough to complete the mission to get your friend's home safe and your self home safe. The Navy Seals don't need you to protect them they need you to applaud them and give them encouragement and love and to take care of their families while they're gone so that way they don't have to worry about them being alone. Trust me you do not want to send a group of men into the most scariest situation that are sensitive and untrained in battle and suffering
Special forces are a different breed of people you’ve got to be fearless and also well prepared to die and see death it’s not something everyone has the capability to do I don’t know many people that could keep on fighting while their friends are dying or wounded besides them to try and not only save self but the rest of your team
He came to your podcast...he must REALLY like you😂😂😂😂
The man is absolutely savage. Simply incredible. He makes me want to strive for even more greatness.
The lighting in this video is so damn good. What is your setup and how did you get it to look like this?
"requalify every day" is such a powerful statement.
It's basically a Chestertons fence problem, unless you've figured out exactly why the tear gas is used then assume they have a good reason for it instead of screaming about how wrong it is according to your knowledge.
looking forward to this episode
I never comment on videos but juses christ what a conversation. I wished more people would actually understand the message they are trying to convey. Very few truly get it.
I think all militaries expose recruits to tear gas in basic training, its not a special forces thing. It would be irresponsible to not prepare them for something they are likely to encounter in action. What was described here is standard procedure. I remember people criticising UK SAS selection claiming it was too extreme, I don't think they appreciate what type of work they do in the field as its so far outside of what the vast majority of people will ever experience.
We savages are on every level of society i work in 2 resteraunts full time and still lift and run almost everyday some of us just need more than average david is a voice for those people
I wonder why Goggins never seems to mention Jocko, and Jocko never talks about Goggins? Seems odd, since they seem to have a lot in common?
Especially given that they both had Iraq deployments during close years (i think 2003/2004 for Goggins, and 2006 for Jocko)

"They're always gonna need men like us, those who are willing to do what others will not" - Cpt Frank Woods (Vietnam/Cold War Veteran)
You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall! But seriously, Goggins is the man. The first time I did the Hawaii Ironman, thinking I was tough and trained. No joke, Goggins and a handful of other Seals parachutted out of a plane into the swim start to do the race. He is the 1%, even though I don't claim to know the 1%.
You have an excellent guest here, and I think Gogginss take is spot on. The training needs to be that tough because the jobs will be tougher and demand that. Also note everyone who wants to be a SEAL has to opt into the program and then past the exams and training.
The comparison to Musk and twitter though is unwarranted; The difference is that the expectation of the SEALS is never going to become standard expectations of a member of the Navy, or any organization. The SEALS are not a profit driven group. but the work expectation of staff at twitter can quickly become an industry standard for tech industry and others. Those employees had unreasonable expectation forced upon them; they did not opt into them willingly. The negotiation with the higher ups in a large corporation is unilateral, the employee practically has no say. If a business is monetarily successful with unethical but legal tactics, many others will soon follow suit. The push-back against how Musk is running the organization is because it could become the standard for many more employees if he is successful. And this will be harmful even for the most motivated and driven individuals; as their comparative reward will also be much smaller.
Agreed. Comparing elite level spec op military standards to that of civillain work standards is non-sense. Every member of the Seals signed up to live that kind of extreme life style. No one at Twitter asked for for some billianaire a** hole to buy out the company and force 84 hour work weeks on them.
In Japan they have an actual sensus statistic called Karoshi. It litterally means death by over work. Its a sum total collection of the number of people who die every year working over 80 hours a week. This kind of living is extremely unhealthy/dangerous unless you absolutely want that life style for yourself.
@Michael One of my dad's brother's back in the 90s decided to join the Air Force and he started training straight after basic training for to become a Pararescueman. He said it was the toughest training, far tougher than any judo or karate training he did when as a teenager, and he said "Zayne, this is a hard lifestyle. I've seen people die. I've shot people. I've killed people. I have seen friends and allies die. live with that. I have to keep going and my way of going is different than a lot of lazy-ass people out there." It's one reason I realized I didn't need to or really have the want to do the Air Force Pararescueman thing anymore after that conversation with him.
Navy seal, ranger, all of it needs yo be be hard. Love Goggins drive
"its a perishable skill"....this applies to so many things, practice you're craft daily.
Woooooooo!

I don’t think the enemy will lighten up. They will go full out. There’s a reason people like Lt. Murphy went above physical strength to help his team
All non-infantry Marines go through something called Marine Combat Training. When we marched from the 40mm range to the Land Nav course, we marched through a riverbed that is used to gas the Grunts in the School of Infantry. The effect was that we gassed ourselves by kicking up the dust in that riverbed. Holy shit that sucked.
The fact is that you absolutely need people like that as well as people for thousands of other occupations. Society constantly attempts to force everyone through the same hole when every human has a purpose that includes the attributes to get it done. You cannot accomplish that purpose while being forced to think like everyone else.
“You gotta requal every fking day, not once a year”💥
I was a Weapons Sergeant in the 5th Special Forces Group out of Fort Campbell, KY and I agree with everything Goggins said.
US Army Basic Training circa 2001, we had to stay in a Gas Chamber (CS Gas) and say our name, SSN, and sing happy birthday before exiting.

I love this. Goggins is 100 percent correct.
Lol he really compared war to making an obscenely rich man richer for the same pay. Wtf
I’m a senior software developer and I laughed so hard at the developers whining about Elon’s comments. There are hundreds of us that would kill for the ability to work in an environment where we are making amazing changes and tackling big challenges. Many developers work at startups making no money and working long hours because they believe in it. Big tech companies get soft and developers there value map pods and free yoga. They fail to produce greatness. Remember never accept less of yourself because the 99% say you should take the easier route.
Can’t wait for the full podcast !
If BUDS is too hard, just ring the bell...
When Goggins gets tear gas, its the gas that cries.
Love David Goggins, support from Australia 🇦🇺 guy's.
Love this video but I wouldn’t compare coders at Twitter to the Seals.
We literally did the same thing in regular army basic training. It's not hard, just sucks for a little while.
I think perhaps the issue with tear gas is that it has a chance of causing permanent eye damage, which could cause the potential loss of men in the seals who are fully capable of enduring the pain. There are other ways of causing pain that dont have that risk. Thats why its senseless.
You can sing HB with eyes closed. I went through tear gas spraying outside in 30 degree weather as a Federal Agent. Mouth open and eyes open. In case we were sprayed by criminals. You got to be prepared. ❤️🇺🇸✝️💜✝️🌸
I used to be a corrections officer, part of CERT (SWAT in other words), and would be exposed to CS on a monthly basis as part of training. Like mentioned above, it's done to not only build up "tolerance", but to mentally train/prepare you for an emergency situation (riots in my case), so you can respond accordingly. There's a method to the madness
We did the same thing in the marines but instead sung the marine corps hymn instead of happy birthday while they did it.
It was great!
There is a place for everyone some find it some don’t
"It's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't hard everyone would do it, the hard is what makes it great."
I could give a million quotes on this topic, but the video gives the nuance that isn't quite conveyed in a pithy quote.
*Very few people are actually willing to become Navy seals*
*You need strong men like musks and goggins*
I really hope you’re not saying Elon Musk is a “strong man”. Goggins is 100x the man that Elon never will be.

Lympstone Devon. Once you've had a look at it ... ask to train with them !

Looking forward to this 👏👏
I read his book and there are literally worse things they do than that.
Just like any other job, you train for the job. And that's what the job entails, and that training is why the SEALs and other forces like CIA, SF, Recon, PJ etc are the best in the world. You can't possibly be prepared to be kidnapped, interrogated, gassed, how to treat a wound etc without training for it. Over, and over.
Bro, I need full podcast
LOL Asking Goggins if " fill in the blank " is too rough . Your inner b^tch loves birthdays Joe !!! hahahaha
Putting Musk in the same phrase as Goggins was à very bold move, in my point of view.
The gas training they are talking about is administered to all US mitary recruits, in all branches, in boot camp.
They need that training to survive. Also, all the men always bemoaning how taller men have the advantage? You need to google the average height and weight of navy seals. Seriously.
SUPER NECESSARY.. EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER .. FACTS
I’m glad we have the baddest mf’s defending this country.
Oh shit, Goggins with the Hoka Mach 4
I think it's a good idea that the first time you're exposed to tear gas isn't on the battlefield.
Training should prepare you for as many outcomes as possible.
The world needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door.
I bet that professor never saw the Marine Recon episode of Surviving the Cut
Chris, what mic are you using? This sounds amazingly clear. I would like to buy one of them
When will the full conversation be available??🙏
It has to be a relationship between those who can those who cant. Its up to those that can to protect those that cant, its also up to those that cant to make sure those that push that extra mile are properly taken cared of and rewarded. Thats the professors point of view. If its not actually effective in the selection and simply HARMS the best of us...its up to those of us that cant to protect and stick up for them.
Great answer!
Where is whole interview?
My father law passed ranger school and saw combat. Combat is a lot worse than tear gas in your face. No matter how hard your DI is on you, the enemy will be worse.
The CS gas thing is pretty much standard in recruit training in the British army, or used to be. Everyone from cooks, to engineers to infantry used to do it. Be in time, mask in nine! 😂👍
I have never been in that situation (almost never, I have some military training) but I completely understand why Navy Seals need to go through such training. I think that professor lives in a bubble of unreality of the real world. yet strangely enough going through such rough training made me tougher yes but also made me more compassionate and lot more careful when I use violence or force. That guy is dangerous because he will make decisions that cause suffering of other people, and he would not understand it.
Great video
“ Just because you passed a course doesn’t mean it stays” fuck! 🤯
There is a reason why they do this kind of stuff. They are NAVY SEALS. Best of the best.
I’m a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience…later in life a DEA Special Agent and Counter-Terrorist. I’m no David Goggins but, you have to keep training and push on …
I am of the opinion he is perhaps the ONLY true philosopher of the last 30 years. "Oh but he doesn't have a degree! And he is just a military guy!" So was Socrates. A military guy that didn't knew Nietzsche or bauman, but that knew a lot about life. Sadly, the universities are making all too theorical philosophers that completly forget REAL LIFE
I both agree and disagree with this video. I 100% agree with Goggins and Chris on their view of SEAL training. It should be hard, these guys are going to be expected to go to war. They must be the absolutely best of the best.
Where I disagree is the conversation about Elon Musk. Musk is actively trying to get around labour laws, he has been found to have broken both labour laws and securities laws. He has been fined for these actions. Additionally, if his actions were truly making Twitter better, then I could possibly understand that the outcome justifies the means, but they aren't. Evidence shows Twitter is being run into the ground. Revenue is down, while expenses are through the roof. LASTLY, nothing Musk is doing is necessary for society, he isn't making the world a better place, he's just another rich CEO trying to get richer.
People need to stop being soft when it comes to the military, they need to understand that military trainings, whether its BUDS or Basic, is supposed to suck, that's the point. If you're not tough enough to withstand tear gas for 20 minutes, you're certainly not tough enough to survive overseas when the enemy combatant is committing war crimes against you and your team.
People also need to stop putting rich ass holes like Musk on a pedestal. The ultra-rich aren't making the world a better place. They're just greedy.
We do tear gas exposure trapped in a chamber at the age of 16 at the Harrogate Army Foundation Collage. It is fucking horrendous, you dread it for weeks as you are told horror stories about it. It's was even worse than I thought it would be. And I fucking loved it
Almost everyone: 'but.....'
