  • Downriggers are a cornerstone of my Kayak Arsenal. They can be used at any depth to target trout. Here's a breakdown on how I setup the downrigger on my Hobie Outback and the basics on how to use it.

    *We tried this out finally yesterday and it worked awesome! **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s we put it on our 16 foot aluminum boat and trolled with it. We didn’t catch anything but it was still fun and worked awesome! Can’t wait to use this baby again and hopefully reel in a big ole fish! Very easy to install and set up.*

    this is a great video, I can see how this is an awesome option for a pedal yak. I'm probably going to try the paracord method to see if it can work on my canoe in place of my current lead line setup

    Great Lesson, thanks for posting! Can you comment on safety with regards to waves and boat wakes? I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has experience with this type of setup on a lake where you get more boat wakes or some more rolling surfaces.

    The other advantage of using braid instead of the steel is that the steel line hums very loudly when moving. Braid doesn't. Love the Scotty Mini Lake troller. Use mine on my kayak all of the time.

    Can you run 50 ft . of line and then use a rubber band and attach weight to rubber band? I know it would be hard in a kayak but could work in a boat to give you an edge ! Can you show me an example of this method! I heard some people caught many fish using this method with a threaded worm . or why would you use this method when you have a down rigger ( example would be video on Alamnor with big daddy guide . Thanks for the information will use it summer trout fishing

    Great video Wes! There was some great information in this video. Say, do you think the shuttle hawk would work on your 200lbs braided down rigger line? Or would it need to have something with more rigidity in the line?

    • @openmind6969
      @openmind6969 Před 4 lety +2

      Rich Dagsher I don’t think the shuttle hawk works on braided like. On my kayak I kept the steel line and use the shuttle hawks. Even Stack one line to left on ball and shuttle hawks to right sometimes. Can get mastered. Important to not tighten the downrigger too much as this allows it to release if ball hangs up on Tree or rocks. That happens and it’s a bit of a jerk on kayak for sure. Didn’t capsize yet.

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  Před 4 lety +1

      I agree with Lothar. The Shuttle Hawk is not great on Dacron line. I also think it works better at faster speeds. Sometimes we are trolling .8-1.2 MPH, and its just not enough to push the shuttle up and down.

    • @openmind6969
      @openmind6969 Před 4 lety +1

      Fish Hunt Shoot Productions yes. Gotta speed up a bit to get the shuttle pushed down. But it stays down even at 0.8 mph. Makes trolling much easier especially if bite is hot or line comes off and then lost fish such as with hot Kokanee bite. I understand concern for safety with steel line.

    • @traildadd
      @traildadd Před 4 lety

      I use a shuttle hawk on my kayak with braided down rigger line. It always goes down easily. Sometime I need to speed up for a few seconds to start it coming up. I use it successfully.
