    Dr Garth Davis' research changed my life, I was 23, overweight and blood pressure so high i'm at risk of a stroke because all i ate was chicken and beef thinking i need to get all the protein in the world. It's total BS after nearly 10 months of being plant based I've lost about 4-5 stone and I'm now training 5 days a week weight lifting and boxing. Thank you Dr Davis

    I have had just the experience he talks about. I was underweight. Told to eat more protein (plant based). But i was so obsesses with eating as much protein as i could and then going no cant eat fruit it doesn't have enough protein AND i got nowhere, didn't gain anything i was too stressed! Soon i woke up to this fact and just started to eat a full range plant based diet again and not think about protein and what do you know, my weight is back to normal.

      It's ironic, because everybody tells you to eat more protein to gain weight, and if you want to lose weight, you need to eat more protein. That doesn't make sense... The same thing can't have to opposite outcomes

    I lost a dear friend due to kidney failure. Years earlier she had undergone bariatric surgery, lost the weight but because of not changing her diet she eventually regained unwanted pounds. Unfortunately she began meal replacement with years of drinking Diet Pepsi and continued to consume it even after needing double knee replacement and later being put on dialysis Tragically no one in the medical profession ever spoke to her about nutrition and how it related to any of her health maladies.
    Hopefully we will be wise enough to apply the knowledge Dr Davis is giving us. Peace💚

    I exercise 3 days weekly, weight training, ride my bike and am vegan. I tested his hypothesis and it's absolutely correct. You get plenty of great nutrition from greens, beans, onion and mushrooms.....and everything else that is good in the vegan way of life. I started at 385 in Sept of 16 and am down to 270 as of today. 10/15/17. it's a journey to be sure....and build those good habits up.

      jootg22 Calories don't matter much if you are vegan.. You missed the point about protein in the video and it's all about the workouts and overall being active, like walking instead of getting a bus etc.

      @jootg22 Před 6 lety

      I didn't miss the point. There are so many different and conflicting sites, peer reviewed journals, experts and etc, What I wanted to know is how did you approach and gain such a drastic weight loss. I am an active person, but weak due to another illness, but I am slowly getting stronger. I am also in sports medicine... so I wanted to hear what you did, nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for answering the caloric & protein amount, but if you eat too many calories, you will still gain weight. I am just trying to find a balance, since I am a baby vegan. Just started and really want to hear from as many people as I can to garner a plan for myself.

    What is the source of this protein obsession? Everywhere I turn I see labels boasting more protein in every conceivable product. I can't help but wonder if this isn't being perpetuated by the animal agriculture industry in order to recover any losses they've had from people eating less meat and dairy in the last 10-15 years.

    • @chrismcpherson7455
      @chrismcpherson7455 Před 6 lety +2

      Myles Raymond I guess it can be due to those wanting to gain muscle mass they have been taught that if you want to grow In the gym you need to feed your body more protein so if one has 124lbs of lean muscle mass the old school thought is that you would need to consume 124 grams of protein each day to maintain that muscle and if you want to pack on more pounds you need to consume more. All of that is archaic thinking and needs to be rectified

    • @VivienMaron
      @VivienMaron Před 6 lety +3

      Individuals are consuming more meat and dairy, but society as a whole is moving away from eating animal products. That means that more people are not eating animal products anymore, and that outweighs individuals eating more.
      In the last 10-15 years the production of meat has become cheaper, so if the consumption has been the same every year for the past 10-15 years, then the meat industry should be making more money. BUT when you look at the profits, meat and dairy companies are making less money, and the number of animals slaughtered every year has been decreasing. On the other hand, meat substitutes (veggie burgers, tofurkeys, etc) has gone up, and so has the demand for alternative milks (almond, soy, rice, coconut, cashew, etc.)
      Hope that makes sense :)

    • @VivienMaron
      @VivienMaron Před 6 lety +6

      When you look at the word "protein" itself it comes from "protos" and "proteios" which translates into "first" and "primary." Scientists found it and thought it was an amazing scientific discovery so they named it protein to emphasize its importance. You add a brilliant marketing and lobbying campaign to that and you got yourself a protein obsessed society that is dying.
      It started with Atkins getting super popular, and at the same time meat and dairy industry consultants were hired to be on the board of the FDA. When the FDA started increasing the recommended daily values of animal products, that had to be advertised. So schools taught kids to eat more meat and dairy, companies advertised that it's FDA approved to eat more meat and dairy products. Then leftovers of the dairy production kept increasing, which is where whey protein came from, so to make extra money from leftovers they needed to advertise the importance of whey protein. The easiest way to do that is to get a super popular and successful athlete to endorse whey protein. BOOM!
      At the same time the meat and dairy industry was lobbying the government and received subsidies to make meat and dairy products cheaper, which means more people were able to afford it, so more was sold.

    Australian mice studies are very clear. The high protein mice live the shortest. High carbohydrate low protein low fat mice non caloric restricted live the longest. Caloric restriction for longevity actually functions through restriction of protein and fat but mostly protein restriction.

    • @theartificialsociety3373
      @theartificialsociety3373 Před 8 lety +2

      +liam harkness well sharks need seals to survive. But humans are quite different and actually need less protein than any other mammal including mice. In fact, on a caloric basis, the amount of protein cows eat is too high to be ideal for humans because grass is very high in protein calorically. Humans do best on low protein starchy foods. Elimination of all meat is not a natural diet for humans either but it is in fact a superior diet when B12 is supplemented. We all should take advantage of the knowledge. Look at the diets of the Blue Zones for a perspective and learn from them. You will find they eat a mostly starchy staple diet, vegetables, some fruit, very little oil, fish, meat, dairy.

    • @liamharkness551
      @liamharkness551 Před 8 lety

      +The Artificial Society when you have been working in the field longer you'll realize that it's not about the ratios of macronutrients but more about the quality. I work with Olympic athletes, power lifters as well as stroke and cancer patients and their diets are all completely different and based upon the individual and their daily routine not some FDA approved pyramid wall chart. The Blue Zone research you mentioned works for exactly that reason, all the food is organic and locally grown in nutrient rich soil so it goes from the ground to the table on the same day. When you go to the grocery store for your fruits and vegetables be aware that even if the produce is GMO free it was grown in poor soil, picked early, artificially ripened and is covered in pesticides. When you understand that there is no healthy source of go to macronutrients left you have to resort to growing your own and gaining access to nutrient rich foods including meat and dairy from healthy animals.

    • @theartificialsociety3373
      @theartificialsociety3373 Před 8 lety +1

      +liam harkness first, the people in general are not suffering from diseases of deficiency but rather diseases of excess. I appreciate your conservative attitude but I suggest to you that there are two divergent an incompatible goals. One goal is athletic performance and sexual attributes that primarily correlates to strength and leanness. The second goal is longevity that actually results in a slightly different body profile. For longevity, a high carbohydrate low protein low fat diet is essential. The human body is very well adapted to living on smaller levels of micronutrients and in fact benefits from less. But caloric intake is necessary to maintain lifestyle and emaciation is detrimental when you have proper diet. My guess is you will not agree with my assertions which is fine but I suggest to you to keep an ear out to the science of vegan diets and maintain an open mind. Athletic diets is more complex issue but investigate some vegetarian like diets, Serena, Djokievicz

    • @liamharkness551
      @liamharkness551 Před 8 lety

      +The Artificial Society it's not that I don't understand you its just that it's not interesting. Sweeping generalizations on macronutrient ratios is boring and while I don't generally disagree I have seen my fair share of vegans with conditions like fibromyalgia, neurological dysfunction and even cancer too. Let us say that we look at nutrition at different levels from different perspectives.

We try our best to no use processed oils. Instead we use herbs and spices and our food is amazing. We no longer obsess about protein, instead we eat more calories and don’t gain weight and we feel amazing. We make different cuisines, such as, Indian, Asian, Persian. Just modify the recipe and substitute with legumes or organic tofu. This kind meals are so delicious that I have zero cravings for animal products. Even my kids are proud vegans and it’s so nice to see their friends being interested and asking questions about our diet. I keep talking about how this diet is kind to our bodies and to animals and the environment. They care so much for the animals that even during birthdays and Halloween’s we buy only vegan stuff.

    What do you say to all those who say Animal Proteins Are Complete, But Plant Proteins Are Not. In total, there are around 20 amino acids that the human body uses to build proteins. These amino acids are classified as either essential or non-essential. Your body can produce non-essential amino acids. However, it cannot produce essential amino acids, which need to be obtained through your diet. For optimal health, your body needs all the essential amino acids in the right ratios. Animal protein sources, such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy, are similar to the protein found in your body.

    • @ChaniRidley
      @ChaniRidley Před 3 měsíci

      All plant foods contain all essential amino acids in varying degrees which is why you are meant to eat a diversity of plant foods. Unable to produce a vegan soup, I was given a salad instead of the soup which all the other guests on our tour party received. I mean a vegan soup is the most difficult thing in the world to produce. I have seen what lack of protein does, we may be over eating it, not enough is just as bad. Your body will start consuming itself without all 3 macros. I have first hand experience when I cut out protein myself, in 6 months I went from bench pressing 300lbs to 180lbs. We do over consume it, but have your body start wasting is not good, people do starve to death in the world.

      If I may, please keep in mind, when one is eating a sufficient amount of calories through whole plant foods (and fungi) it is impossible to not get enough protein. Especially, since essential protein is only made by plants.
      kwashiorkor is not a disease for concern. As one has mentioned, people (and wildlife) are starving to death due to a lack of food. Thereby, eating a whole food plant based diet is the greatest act one may make for all life in earth.

THEN GET YOUR STOMACH STAPLED AND GO TO A WEIGHT LOSS CAMP FOR 1 YEAR........THAT SHOULD GET YOU DOWN TO 500 LBS. ..AFTER THAT, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. THANKS FOR THE QUESTION.

      You realize that if his advice is true, that means that people don't need surgery, don't need to come back to him and don't have to rely on regular visits to the doctor to get meds prescribed that he's losing a ton of money.
      It would be smarter for him to promote something that brings him repeat customers, meaning people that are sick and rely on prescribed meds that need to be "readjusted" regularly.
