      @@MechitBetter Sorry for the late reply!
      I've had to to replace the boot floor too - it was quite bad so I took it to KAP Suzuki (Keighley, Yorkshire) who sorted it out and undersealed it all. I've since given it a little 2" lift, new tyres, bumper and (thanks to following your video) replaced the kingpins on each side; I also followed your video for the rear seat removal, planning on making a set of drawers to slide in and out for the back now. I've replaced the oil pump, radiator, water pump and timing belts just to make sure it runs smooth. New battery with new front and back LED lights to make it a bit more effective. It's my daily driver, so I was happy to spend a bit of money on it to make it a bit more capable, but nothing too over the top. It's a great car, and it's been fun meeting/talking to other people (such as yourself) who also have a bit of a soft spot for these cars

      I plan to, I only got it back a couple of days ago but I need to have a look at the 4wd system as it’s the newer useless electric button one and it’s not working. yaboii Cheers! The car is standard in every way except the tyres. They’re a 50/50 Road/dirt tyre. Not sure on the size but I’ll check next time Ciarán’s over.
      It’s done a grand job today. It’s got selectable FWD with a high/low gearbox. As far as I gather they’re well regarded by the off road community. They’re very capable for their size. The only down side is the relatively small engine size if you get super stuck I think.

      Hi James. The light flashes to let you know that the system is switching from 2WD to 4WD. If it continues flashing constantly then it suggests that the vacuum hubs aren't engaging properly. Do you notice if the system is working or just that the light flashes when you switch to 4WD?
      It should only be in 4WD when you're not on solid ground otherwise it can cause damage.

      Are you saying you have to physically switch drive at the wheels? I'm not familiar with manual selecting hubs. Was it a private sale or dealer? Either way I'd speak to them to make sure there isn't something custom/specific to that Jimny. Was there a particular reason you didn't test it before buying?
      If its not as advertised then I believe the seller has a responsibility to either put it right or refund you (or some compromise) ... Unless it was "sold as seen".
      It might be something as simple as replacing a split vacuum hose or it could be something serious. We haven't had to do anything significant with the 4WD system so not the most knowledgeable about problems with it. A good resources would be the BIG JIMNY website/forum. They are some experienced folks.

    Please can you tell me why my jimny might be stick in 4 x 4? This happened when I left ot at an MOT garage. I think the mechanic has fancied trying 4 WD in dry town road conditions. I only ever engage 4 x 4 in slippery icy wet conditions. Theyve had it in their garage a week and I"m worried they could be doing untold damage. Whats the worst that can happen and how do they get it back in 2 WD - do you know? Please help...

    • @MechitBetter
      @MechitBetter  Před 5 lety

      MegMerrilies Hi Meg. I’ll ask Ciarán and see what he thinks. Is yours stuck in normal 4WD or in low range?
      I’ve just done a little research and it sounds like there are a number of reasons your Jimny could be stuck in 4WD, so it would be hard to diagnose without seeing and testing it. If I were in your situation I’d ask the garage to fix it if the problem wasn’t there when you dropped it off. Or is that what they’ve been trying to fix for a week?

    • @MegMerrilies
      @MegMerrilies Před 5 lety

      Thanks! Hi! They've been trying to fix it for a week since the MOT last Monday. I think it's in normal 4WD I remember the green lit up 4WD picture flashing. There wasn't an "L" next to it which I think there would be if it was the low range is that right?
      They are unfamiliar with 4 x 4s and are trying to fix it, and I insist they do because there was no problem before they touched it, infact they shouldn't have even touched the 4 x 4 as its not part of the MOT. Today I was told they are waiting for kingpins - they're going to try new ones - I'm not sure that'll help?
      They said it went into 4WD when it was lowered from the lift, but I suspect different.
      It was very heavy to drive as I tried to reverse it to take it from the garage. It was impossible for me, that's when I said I couldn't drive it and wanted it fixed. That's when I referred to the booklet that comes with the car.
      Are you sure it won't cause damage because the booklet said 4 x 4 shouldn't be used in dry conditions as it can cause damage to the drive train (I think).

    • @MechitBetter
      @MechitBetter  Před 5 lety

      MegMerrilies
      Hi again Meg. Ciarán just replied to my text message. It’s his Jimny. Here’s what said...
      The 4x4 "mode" is not designed to be used on good, flat roads. As far as I'm aware I don't think it's a case of causing MAJOR damage. (EDIT - It can cause significant damage). It's not ideal as it is more effort for the small engine and extra load on the drive train if using at higher speeds. If its sticking in 4x4 it might be something as simple as the vacuum lines being lose or maybe more involved like something in the connection between selector and gearbox (a connecting rod slipped off?)
      If it's a later model with push buttons for 4x4 and low ratio then it may be a something electrical.
      ------
      Are you saying that the steering is heavy also?

    • @MegMerrilies
      @MegMerrilies Před 5 lety

      @@MechitBetter I couldnt turn the steerng wheel to reverse so I suppose it is. I have found that if it's in 4wd and the conditions are dry.

    • @MechitBetter
      @MechitBetter  Před 5 lety

      MegMerrilies It could be possibly ‘transmission wind up’ if they’ve travelled a reasonable distance in 4WD. Sometimes reversing a distance can cure it if that is the case, but I’m no 4x4 expert either, and I don’t want to give you incorrect advice and make things worse.
      If you haven’t already, it might be worth joining the ‘big Jimny’ forum and asking on there. Their collective knowledge will far surpass our own.

      If you do get to the bottom of it, please stop by and let us know the solution. It might help someone else reading all this in the future.

  • @kingieeeunthepetrolhead8352

    Hiya mate, I'm thinking of getting one of these as a first car. What would the insurance be like as they sell for cheap?

    • @MechitBetter
      @MechitBetter  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Ethan.
      Thanks for the question.
      I can tell you I've really enjoyed owning and driving this little green ogre. It's a very versitile machine and able to cope with almost anything you throw at it. Driving position is great and its really easy to turn in tight spots. Fuel economy isn't the best (supposedly about 35mpg) but depends how and where you drive it and if there's any mods or chunky tyres etc.
      As for the insurance, I don't think I could give you any real accuracy. Theres so many variables like your age, location, where its kept, even your job and a million other things. If you're under 25 just assume that any car insurance will be a lot.
      One thing though, it's only a 1.3litre engine so that should work in your favour.
      Do your research and be patient. Rust can be a problem so make sure to inspect as much of the floor as you can, including under rear seats, wheels arches & under the jack. The king pins on the front wheel hubs can be an issue after a while (search "death wobble"). It can be a REALLY involved task and can be expensive if paying someone to do it. So ask for paperwork to confirm its been done or use it as a bargaining chip.
      In my opinion I would also avoid soft-tops and the models with the push-button selector for 4wd. They are supposedly more difficult to fix and give you less control.
      Well, I got a bit carried away there but I hope that helps.

    • @matthewhoward1565
      @matthewhoward1565 Před 5 lety +2

      Got one as my first car. Few things.
      First the bad:
      Its a true 4x4 in every sense ie if you learnt to drive in a polo (like me) it will feel different (read vague). It doesn't like motorways, it can do 70 but your pulling 4000 revs in 5th. Fuel economy is bad compared to other cars of its size (I get between 30-35 with a/t tyres on it). Even as a first car its slow. Its basic, mine doesn't have aircon reversing sensors or even an aux port for the radio. Fuel tank is weirdly small so can only do bout 200 miles on a tank.
      The good:
      Its a true 4x4. Loves offroad farm tracks and is brilliant in snow and ice. Easy to maneuver as you sit upright and have plenty of windows and large mirrors to use. It has a surprising amount of room in it as the body is basically a cube shape. I have driven other cars and the jimny is just fun to drive. It can and mine has kept up with landrovers and the like off road.
      But please understand everything that makes this car great off road is a compromise on a road and unless you intend to use it off road or live in a rural area I'd have to admit its probably not the best option. But shove a set of at tyres on it and you can take them pretty much anywhere in standard form.

      For me, that's fine. I do like it for being basic.
      But yes, it's not the quietest of mini 4x4’s.
