Erica Durance's portrayal of Lois Lane on Smallville has by far been the best one in the 75 years the character has been around. Lois is not supposed to be a bitch like she is in the animated series, or helpless like in B&W serials, or obsessed with getting laid like Margot Kitter and she certainly is not supposed to be high maintenance like Teri Hatcher. Lois is the tough tomboy that enjoys hanging with the boys, doesn't mind getting dirty or sacrificing herself for the greater good, kind-hearted, smart enough to know what she wants and not afraid to go after it and she's comfortable in her own shoes to stand alongside side members of the JLA. That's the kind of woman that earns instant respect and admiration, and goes from the girl-next-door to sexy as hell. She is every bit a superhero in her own right and there would be no Superman if not for Lois. And Smallville got it right, Lois is everything Clark is not. She is his equal and the times they team up regardless of the format, they kick ass and are unbeatable. Amy Adams... yeah sure but Erica Durance will always be the only Lois Lane there could ever be

Erica was awful in Smallville.
At first it's easy to get stunned by her breathtaking beauty. But once you let the superficialities to subside she was just annoying. The original crew had a great thing going for those first three years. When she stepped in, the show became cheesy and campy. And her constant desire to remind us that she was "hot" was pathetic. I know she was just following the script,...but still, she would have been a heck of a lot hotter if she didn't tell us so, every third episode. (Like admiring her appearance in the mirror, in the episode that escapes me at the moment.)
I don't entirely blame her though. With Millar and Gough at the reigns the show was brilliant. But when Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders took over the show almost immediately went down hill. They belonged in the Nickelodeon or Buffy the Vampire world.
With that said, she was brilliant when she played the vulnerable, overllooked victim.
But then again, if I was that gorgeous, I'd like to think I'd play it no different.
cherbutler85 I don't think thats entirely true, if you go back to Facade in season 4 Lois said "Call me crazy, but I've always been a firm believer that beauty - it's on the inside." That was one of the great things about Lois she never was interested in that typical high school superficial drama (that's why she clashed with the cheerleaders) and she always concerned herself with doing the right thing. We can ALL agree that Lois Lane is not a dull character, she has that extra oomph, which people can either find annoying or endearing - it's down to personal choice I guess, however, I did not find Erica annoying as MANY people would agree.
msqueenbx I will have to respectfully disagree. Your example of her modesty was a comment given to her from the writers.By the way, I regret making my initial comment. It was stupid. Next to Hogan's Heroes, and X-files, Smallville is one of my all time favorites. A major reason for that was the cohesion of the original cast. The believability of every relationship made the show seem so real,..idyllic.
I just think Erica (or should I say her portrayal of Lois) far too often threw all that realism out the window.
For starters she just strolls into town and by the end of her first episode she's sleeping in Clark's bedroom. Soon after she enrolls into Smallville High. Yeah, right. What was she, 30 at the time.
Bother ridiculous scenarios.

It was a great show PERIOD.
But before I go, I think Erica's arrival, kinda, sorta pushed Allison/Chloe into the background,...slowly. And that was a huge mistake, cause Allison is a far superior actor to Erica in every way.
I know a Lois Lane had to exist. Just didn't think she needed to step on Chloe Sullivan to get face time.
Erica could have made it better if she had an ounce of humility.
She's "hot" and unfortunately, she knows it. IMO.

I really liked how the show portrayed Lois as a strong female not a weak one like most shows / movies do. And Erica Durance was the best choice for the role. She is my favourite Lois by far.

Erica Durance was the best Lois Lane hands down it will never be anyone better at that character.Loved how they brought her in and meet Clark before the Daily Planet.Instead of the same boring shit as always Smallville changed the game and it was amazing still the best show ever made

I slowly watched the first 3 seasons of smallville until Erica Durance joined the cast, now I'm binge watching
i finally started watching recently and the same exact thing happened to me. She makes the show so much better, but I wish she was more involved in some of the episodes. I'm currently on season 7.
I wasn't happy with her at first, on the show, but she grew on me, got prettier and prettier, more character came out, she was an interesting irritant for Clark and when she was forced in one scene to admit to loving Clark, right in front of him it brought tears to my eyes. Now, any new person playing Lois will have to measure up to the new standard Erica set when she stepped up and raised the bar.
wade cooper i felt the opposite, in the beginning she was an amazing character, but when the "romance" started to flesh out, she just started getting real awkward and it was hard to watch.

She is not just the best Lois, she is the Lois. The bar she set hasn’t been met since then and I don’t think it will ever be. There was just something special about Smallville in general that can’t be matched. It’s still to this day my favorite tv show of all time, and I’m not really even that into the Superman comics.

Old news. Her face started looking different since season 8 of Smallville. You can tell she gets fillers because she used to have really noticeable laugh lines.

Erica Durance is the best Lois Lane. I am over 70 and have watched all the different versions of Lois and she is the best. She nailed the character. Tom and Erica's development from frenemies to working partners to soulmates was incredibly well done and provided an amazing payoff when the series ended.
The only people who find Erica Durance's portrayal of Lois Lane as bad in comparison to previous ones are closet misogynists who think that a women asserting herself and being powerful is a bad thing compared to being the quiet, glass doll that always needs saving. She definitely fills the role as Clark Kent's anchor to humanity without being any less than his equal. You find her obnoxious? Yea right, so was Zod and his constant "I am Zod" in that snotty accent and so was Lex with his constant "I DESERVE IT" yet I don't hear people complain about them because they're guys and they're supposed to be powerful and you're used to that. Well, get used to more women like Erica Durance's Lois Lane and the world will be a much better place.

I could not STAND the actor who played Zod on Smallville. Waaay too strong of a cockney accent and just too "regular guy off the street" look about him. He annoyed me to no end, every scene he was in.
I felt like his character as Zod was too weak.

Amy is a better actress, also Amy is a film actress whereas Erica is a television actress.

Erica Durance herself (Smallville Season 04-2004,2005-10-2010,2011 Lois Lane) had a wonderful adventurous adventure with the entire cast of Smallville and never got tired of it to this day. I myself believe that she remembers almost every detailish detail of every week of every episode from Smallville Season 04 Episode 01-Legacy to Season 10 Episode 21-22-Finale from dawn 06:00am-18:00pm every Sunday-Saturday. I wish that I myself could've seen the Krypton's fate (Season 07 Episode 18-Apocalypse, 2007,2008), Lionel Luthor's death (Season 07 Episode 16-Decent, 2007,2008), Lex Luthor's death (Season 08 Episode 14-Requiem, 2008,2009) Davis Bloome/Doomsday's & Clark Kent/Superman's death (Season 08 Episode 22-Doomsday, 2008,2009), Clark Kent/Superman's death again (Season 09 Episode 21-Salvation, 2009,2010), and finally the biggest bang itself (Season 10 Episode 21-22-Finale, 2010,2011). Smallville and it's beloved cast for over 13 years (and soon to be 14 years less than 2 months from now) will never lose. My hat itself is off to our beloved the late Christopher Reeve (Clark Kent/Superman), Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen), Helen Slater (Kara Zor-El/Sulergirl/Lara), and Terence Stamp (General Zod/voice of Jor-El) from the beloved Superman-The Movies (1978,1980,1983,1984,1987). We all ourselves (the Smallville & Superman-The Movies fans from past, present, and future) should never forget them as they get older till their deaths. Tom Welling (Clark Kent/Superman) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) are the best Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor that the Smallville Season 01-10-2001,2002-2010,2011 which ended with the best ending that will be mentioned for years to come.

Full circle for Erica Durance. She is back in Canada after Saving Hope appearing in about four episodes this year of Supergirl on the CW as Alana, Supergirl's mother. A role she came back to after 7 years on Smallville.

In the original cartoons from the 1940's Lois was not helpless. She was reckless, she was fearless, and that headstrong combination, of wanting to be the best, and wanting to prove herself was what got her into jams. She seemed to think that she was invincible, then Clark would have to put on the outfit and help her.
The Lois in the movies with Reeves was the same, arrogant, and headstrong, and reckless. She called for help when she was in the Earthquake, but that's not being a victim, she knew she had Superman to help her, anyone who was in that situation would do the same thing, who the hell wouldn't?
Besides Margot and Erica playing Lois, they are both from Canada as well

Her and Tom were having an affair off set since 2006. Facts. They were gonna leave their spouses after the show ended cuz Erica said once smallville was over she was gonna spend alot of time in los Angeles and she said she will do everything and anything she can there in la and then she paused and said to get a fresh new look out of life. So it seemed that she and Tom were gonna leave their partners and start new life with each other in la where Tom lives but then Erica later on had a change of heart and went back to her husband and broke toms heart. This is why tom and Erica don't keep in touch and why he never talks about Erica. She broke his heart. She shattered him. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. So sad but true story
