  • The banging sound you hear is a loose hand brake inside the car. Better look gating in this direction. Those cars can really move.

    Happy to discover this gem. True the inhabitants of Newark are sensative regarding the pronunciation of NEWARK. Have taken this Septa line númerous times in the past. Septa recently constructed the new Claymont station and there were prior plans to reconstruct stations in Newport and Holly Oak enroute to Philly. Hope it comes true. Great job on the vídeo and narration.

    I lived in the areas that you have filmed (Phila., Warminster, Doylestown) you brought back memories ...Thanks for your narration. Great Job.

    My grandmother's house was just around the corner from the Prospect Park station. I rode that line many and many a time decades ago.

    After Highland Avenue Station, there's a pedestrian bridge crossing over the tracks. That used to be Lamokin Station. Coming in from the left is a old connection that SEPTA still owns. That spur leads through Aston and reconnects with the R3 Media-Wawa line just after Glen Riddle Station and before the Lenni Station. It's a miss opportunity for SEPTA to complete a circle line connecting the R2 with the R3. The spur eventually connects at Phoenixville with the planned extension of the Norristown line to Reading. The circle line conceivably could connect the R2, R3, R5, and Reading extension, creating ridership through the western suburbs.

    At the SEPTA Marcus Hook Station, walk up Market Street from the station to DeCostanza Sandwich - under the current owners, and as B&M Sandwich (decades - going back to the 1970s) this has been the family's preferred hoagie shop - we actually dove up I-95 for them! (Unfortunately - no tables for railfans.)

      That actually has a very pleasant sound, and on certain days, I could hear the Silverliner V cars on both the Wilmington/Newark and Media/Elwyn lines (I live near both).

      That lack of taxes for shopping drives Pennsylvania and Maryland-s Comptrollers buggy! When I came to Brandywine Picnic Park for our family reunion, we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on US 202 just south of the US 1 interchange. The HGI was next door to the Concord Outlet Mall - which is where I did my no-tax shopping - at the Best Buy and BAM.

      Because I took AMTRAK, I used the BTC - they came down US 13 when visiting my relatives to pick me up. DE 4 - which parallels the tracks and shares pavement with US 13 between the BTC and the state line - is called Maryland Avenue.

    Nice to hear you pronounce Newark, Delaware correctly. It annoys me when I hear it mispronounced. I've even heard the train announcers at 30th Street mispronounce it. And I didn't hesitate to tell them. But true, they're calling out trains stopping in Newark, New Jersey too. So it can be confusing to them if they're not careful.
    For the most part, this is a fast ride, especially in Delaware. But the last thirty-five minutes is slow torture. They need to have a system like the Norristown High Speed Line stations have. There is a signal that passengers there waiting to board a car set. Otherwise, a car won't stop. But I can't expect SEPTA Regional Rail management to understand what Suburban Rail management does. That system was put in place decades ago when it was the Philadelphia & Western trolley.

    • @rwboa22
      @rwboa22 Před 2 lety

      Such a system would be useful at the smaller stations alone the Wilmington/Newark Line, mainly for Highland Avenue and Eddystone stations. The others are pretty much do require the train to stop for boarding and alighting, especially with Chester Transportation Center.

    Nice job! I've been on part of that route taking the Silver Meteor back and forth from NYP-CHS. I hear the Bellevue Flyover is no longer serving its original PRR purpose and is to be realigned. I like the Amtrak signals- descendants of the PRR/LIRR position light signals with the center light removed and the addition of color lenses. Keep enjoying your retirement and ignore political claptrap. Cheers

    At first I thought the noisy hand brake was a conductor punching tickets :P Not sure if they even do that anymore...

  • @musicforaarre
    @musicforaarre Před rokem +1

    I love that flyover at Marcus Hook; I can always remember it. I also drove by it in Tractor Trailer while picking up clementines at Wilmington Dole Dock. This, and North Elizabeth, NJ seem to be anomalies from Pennsy days of running freights in the middle, and passenger trains on the outside tracks. How is that Pennsy policy working today; Anyone's opinion ???
    Also, I just LOOOVE that track geometry of the turnouts at 27:32 to rectify fast passenger trains back into the centre tracks. Aarre Peltomaa

    Great ride RRF. Thank you for the tour. I have never ridden on Septa, very nice views. Way back in my early years at mom and dads house. I used to listen to some of those sadly decommissioned towers during VHF radio skip, all the way to my area in Hollis. I had a tall tower in my parents back yard, full of all types of antennas, and equipment down in the radio room. :) again Thanks. Question. Tell me that they did not take ZOO off line. I and my Dad spent a long afternoon up in there back in 1977.

    The Biden Transportation Center is on DE 4- which also connects the next thee stations - Claymont, Marcus Hook (where DE 4 has crossed the state line and has been replaced by US 13) and the Chester Transportation Center (US 13 has changed sides of I-95).

      It's a manual brake located at the engineer's cab. Kinda like the parking brake in a car.

      @Bennie Davis you also forgot that NFL quarterback Joe Flacco played college football at the University of Delaware, winning the NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) title there. Also both Bill Haley & The Comets as well as The Four Aces (fronted by Al Alberts, who was later a fixture on WPVI-TV on Sunday mornings before Disney acquired Capital Cities-ABC) were from Chester.
