    Once upon a time, Amtrak award 2 Amtrak Guest Rewards points per $1 spent, with at least 100 points minimum awarded per trip regardless of price. So riding this trip for 200 times, you will qualify for Select Executive status and may be enough points for a bedroom ride going from NYC to Chicago. They get rid of the 100 point minimum now :(

    Before learning about this, I thought the shortest possible Amtrak journey was between Boston Back Bay and South Station or Newark Penn and Newark Liberty, but this surely takes the cake! Something else that's mind blogging is that at New Haven Union Station, two services that stop there have the SAME name, Amtrak's Hartford Line (which used to be called the New Haven-Springfield Shuttle until 2019) and CTRail's Hartford Line. Both of these begin at New Haven Union and end at Springfield Union in Massachusetts. Even more mind boggling that CTRail tickets are actually ACCEPTED on the Amtrak service between these two stations, as it's a component of CTDOT's Hartford Line commuter rail program along with CTDOT's own trains.

    • @mirzaahmed6589

    it’s actually free. Amtrak just puts $1 because I think that’s their lowest amount that they allow on the website but yeah both Amtrak Hartford Line and CTrail/SLE trains are actually supposed to be a “free shuttle” to downtown New Haven for those that don’t want to walk.

    Of course the one time you're NOT on a long Amtrak journey, you get a special locomotive...that's rough, buddy. Here's some New Haven Union history: The current building is the third such station in the city of New Haven, preceded by both an 1848 station in a different location, and an 1879 station near the current station's location. Designed by Cass Gilbert, the present beaux-arts Union Station was completed in 1920 after the previous Union Station (once near the site of the current Union Station parking garage) was destroyed by fire.
    The New Haven Railroad who once owned it went bankrupt in 1961, and the station was transferred to Penn Central in 1969 before they too went bankrupt the next year! It closed in 1973 and was almost demolished before the Northeast Corridor Improvement project saved it in 1979. After extensive renovations, it reopened in 1985.

The current tunnel concourse went in around 74 to bypass the vacant station, and was remodeled by local architect Herb Newman in 88 to attain its current silver space age look. Newman also did the refurbishing of the Gilbert building.

    Thanks for a great video. To celebrate my half century (50th birthday), we flew from London England to New York, to ride the AMTRAK Vermonter to St Albans, Vermont. It was great fun watching the loco changeover at New Haven, in both directions. I am a fan of both the P42DC and the Amfleet 1 coaches. The route is very scenic, and the P42DC gets up to her 110 mph top speed. I cannot think of a nicer way to celebrate such a milestone birthday. My wife and I also spent her 50th birthday riding AMTRAK. Only she chose to fly to Toronto, and catch the AMTRAK Maple Leaf to New York. That had a P42DC to Albany, and a P32AC-DM + P42DC + P42DC (triple headed - that is 11,700 hp on 5 coaches !) to New York. I think that a ride behind a P42DC for just a dollar is good value for money. Best regards from London, England.

    Reminds me of Hamburg Dammtor to Hamburg Main Station.
    When trains were first introduced in Hamburg, multiple companies build numerous terminal stations at the city edge, which often would just service a single line to another terminal station in a nearby town or city. The companies later merged and extended their tracks to the city center to the new Main Station. Which made most of the terminal stations obsolete for long distance trains, but Dammtor station happened to still be very useful for urban commuter trains. The city has grown massively since then, and what used to be the old city limits is now pretty much the city center, and so you have a ridiculously big and fancy urban rail stop that still has a couple of high speed long distance trains coming through it on the way to the Main Station.
    And for some reason they still stop there. IF you wanted to, nothing would stop you from getting a ticket to board an ICE at Dammtor and get off at Main Station three minutes later.

That in turn triggers all sorts of complex cost calculations alerting more bean counters. Once it determined these two pairs generate a loss, dozens of people will be pulled into countless meetings to discuss the route. It used to be that you could not board any Amtrak heading to South Station at Back Bay (not sure these days). It also used to be cost prohibitive to ride to Back Bay from South Station where you had a minimum ticket to Canton/128 (Boston metro T is much cheaper and usually faster).

    That’s really interesting that the fare is so low. On the Surfliner for example, there’s a “base fare” that’s just for booking your ticket, and then your fare is based on distance. Similar to Metrolink’s fare structure.

    • @static4939
      @static4939 Před rokem

      If I'm correct Amtrak is contracted by the LOSSAN agency that's responsible for the rail corridor the Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink trains travel on, which may be the reason for the similarity in fare structure between Metrolink and the Pacific Surfliner

    The City of Koblenz in Germany can both match and beat that one.
    First the match: Station Koblenz Lützel and Koblenz City Centre are 0.63 Miles, apart.
    However the trip from Koblenz City Centre to Koblenz Main Station is only 0.5 miles.
    It´s worth mentioning that the Station Koblenz City Centre was added much later for reasons nobody really understands, but it ended up being popular with locals commuting by regional train and people visiting the city anyway. To my knowledge only regional trains will stop at all 3 of them, with some of them skipping the City Centre station. Inter City and Inter City Express Trains AFAIK only stop at the Main Station.

  • @stopxthisxfall

    Genuine question, because I don't have trains in my area. Is it just the honor system for when you get off? I know you didn't show it all, but I didn't see anyone checking your ticket and/or forcing you off at the stop. Could you have stayed on indefinitely, or at least until someone noticed?

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před rokem

      For station stops that are close together, Amtrak staff usually don't check tickets, which is why I never showed mine to anyone. Had I stayed on, however, the staff would have come through to check tickets, and at that point, I would be trapped.

    I dont understand why American railroads, particularly Amtrak, dont use double-ended locomotives (as is the rule in Europe). Its got to be waaaay easier to simply end-around your train than find a loop. And it cant possibly cost much to have an additional cab, otherwise there would be "B" unit versions of ACs or SDs all over the place.

  • @schlollepop
    @schlollepop Před rokem +1

    The weirdest thing about the trip report is how European this all feels. A decent station building, electric trains, eight lines running from the station, platforms in good shape, location close to downtown/business district. Even the displays seem of a type that I commonly see here.
    The schedule, however, feels quite French - trains run when they run. Regular intervals seem to be too innovative (unless I am missing something).
    Great video, anyway.

    • @tgmct
      @tgmct Před rokem

      Hey, I miss the old 'flapper' display boards!
      Trains in Italy circa 1980 ran on time UNLESS the engineer got upset for some reason and went on Strike. Real thing - I waited for 2 hours on a Naples to Rome trip because the engineer got pissed at the conductor. He would not restart the train until the conductor had walked enough ahead of the train so he could not possibly hop on as we passed him. I ran into another strike situation on a train from Rome heading to the port that has a ferry over to Sardinia but never found out why.
