Great work, John, and great interview. I learned a million times more from this interview than I did in Guillem's bland (sorry) article on the BBC website.
I like the talk of obsessive detail, hard work, improving players - everything that's not been done in the last 12 months.
I do hope we as fans can be really welcoming and positive, and avoid silly (and actually quite offensive) jokes about Dracula or Good Ebening. When we're all picture perfect specimens who can speak 3-4 languages fluently, ok. He seems like he's committing to the Villa, so hopefully we can all get behind him.
This guy as proven quality and now we need to give him time.
Genuinely I love the podcasts with deep analysis of Chocolate Concrete or Tuna Sandwiches, but this is the best content produced by this channel.
In my mid 50s I shouldn’t be getting carried away but genuinely this is the most excited I’ve been by a manager in my life as a fan.

What a get having Guillem on! Great interview. Delighted for Villa. Fantastic appointment.
My only reservation, as a neutral, is he's not the most charismatic figure. Either verbally or physically. Verbally of course because of his English and physically doesn't compensate at the level of say a Conte or Bielsa. In terms of body language and presence. Having said that, I doubt it will matter a jot initially. As Villa fans naturally will be thrilled to have him. But long-term if there isn't a continual upwards trajectory, I can see a potential issue as far as rapport with the fanbase.
Also good stuff from Guillem pulling up John on the 4-2-3-1 chat. I do think he's got a bit caught up in that. He's very adaptable and flexible, especially when outgunned. Which is gonna be about half the games to start with, in-terms of player ammunition. And has played 4-4-2 a fair bit at Villarreal.

From an Arsenal fan, Unai Emery is an excellent appointment for Villa and probably the best manager you could have realistically got. I like many Arsenal fans wasn't a fan of him at all come the end of his reign but the expectation levels are different at Villa and Emery. His proven what a good coach he is at Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal but I think he struggles to adapt his style of play based on the expectations of certain clubs (PSG and Arsenal for example). He reminds me of Nuno in that sense but look what he did with Wolves. If Emery is given the backing I think he could potentially get Villa into Europe.
Arsenal was a real mess when he took over, Wenger left and the board were all pulling in different directions. Expecting him to clear up that mess under the circumstances in such a short time was something only Arsenal or Man Utd fans would demand. Man U are still struggling to recover from Fergie leaving. Arsenal had to realise miracles take longer.
@@bertiew6771 I get that but I still don't think Emery was ever the man to turn it around simply because his style of football wasn't conducive to do so. He wasn't ever a manager that was going to be a long term fix for us but I hoped he could get us back in the CL like he did with Valencia and Sevilla (Villarreal afterwards) but he didn't do that. Our fans often questioned what his style of play and vision was for the team but I don't think his that sort of coach. His someone that sets his team up purely based on what the opposition does. You often here about that from his former players talking about how meticulous he is showing his teams several videos of the opposition, 1 even said he made them watch ever opponents throw-ins. His very detailed with those things. This is partly why he struggled with us and at PSG because he couldn't adjust his methods based on the expectations of the clubs he was at. As for Villa though, I think he will definitely improve you and get you a lot more organised than Gerrard had you playing.

@@gazzam3172 remember randy Lerner a billionaire he came in with great intentions under Martin O'Neil we finished 6th in the Premier league three seasons running then O'Neil wanted to keep us up there challenging by improving the squad Lerner pulled the plug and we haven't recovered since , either struggling at the bottom of the Premier league or being relegated, I remember our European adventures and loved them I went to rotterdam I love aston villa I want to see good football down there again and not another set of owners who start off well give us hope then pull the rug from under us again.

Now I can't wait to play Arsenal.
Other than the end he did ok at Arsenal. Had all those egos on big wages to deal with that were getting away with murder in the late Wenger years. Arteta nearly went as well maybe the difference being he won his cup final with Arsenal where as Emery lost his which gave him slightly more credit in the bank.
Wasn’t excited at all when Gerrard become manager (though hoped he did well and he was one of my favourite players in the 00s). I’m really looking forward to Emery in charge and hope it isn’t (another!) false dawn.
