    The problem with this substrate is that it greatly exceeds the load bearing capacity of most homes (especially once saturated with water). One cubic foot weighs 68lbs dry, while most residential buildings have a weight limit of 30-50lbs per square foot.

    • @CatRacer1A2A
      @CatRacer1A2A Před 8 měsíci

      Water weighs aprox 63# per cubic foot.
      What you're suggesting is that virtually no home can have a fish tank, and this is verifiably untrue.
      There is absolutely zero concern for the weight of this substrate on 90% of applications.

    • @apwrson9523

      Very late but a bioactive enclosure will clean everything up for you. Of course with a large lizard such as a Tegu, you may have to pick up some feces are and there. You don’t need to change the substrate, and springtail isopods with plants sturdy enough for a tegu will make a great bioactive enclosure

    Thank you for this video. I have a question is it safe for the tegu if ingested ? Also how well is this mixture for potential mites development ? How often do you just mist to keep humidity? This is for indoor enclosure not outdoor ?

    • @RoseCityReptilesTX
      @RoseCityReptilesTX  Před 5 lety +1

      This will work for indoor or outdoor enclosures.
      Humidity will just depend on your area. I'm in Texas and it's very humid here so enclosures don't need misted very often.
      I don't worry about mites at all.
      I have never had an impaction problem and I have kept babies all the way through adults on this substrate.

      Just cant thank you enough for this particular video on diy substrate for tegus. I've been buying cypress mulch for $43.00 dollars a large bag at a reptile store. It's hardly affordable making it hard to have 4 pair.
      I want to buy my next argentine black and white tegus from you. I'm not a good computer user so I dont know how to use face book but you had mentioned in another video you were going to have a website made that I could order from. Put me down for 2.
