When i began collecting music cassettes in the early 90s, Maharajapuram Santhanam was one of my earliest purchases. I was completely taken in by his voice and singing style, and till date, he continues to be my favourite singer.
He is quite at home in Sanskrit, Kannad or Thamizh and sounds equally pleasing in the different sub-genres of Classical Music.
Being a person who had no knowledge of the underlying theory of Carnatic Music, the reason why MS appealed to me was that he usually had another performer singing alongside him.
For this reason, I continued to be fascinated by arists like Priya Sisters, Hyderabad Bros, Malladi Bros etc.
The Mishra brothers ( Rajan Mishra, Sajjan Mishra ) were my introduction to Hindusthani Classical, and instantly became my favourite.
Maharajapuram Santhanam is never harsh on the ears. His longer ( RTP) pieces are such a delight to listen to and the renderings easily evoke the spirit of Bhakti, which Indian Classical music makes its primary objective.
It is indeed sad, that in the pre-digital era, i could not get to know the person better, and he passed away suddenly.
While his recordings ( on the impeccable AVM -SONY lables) -keep us mesmerized here on Earth, his voice must undoubtedly be echoing in the heavens and keeping the Gods happy!
