      According to the story of the ride, she got trapped. To quote another video: "She fell in love with a simple miner, and was going to marry, but her father, not wanting to give her up to a common person, was willing to do *anything* to get the wedding cancelled. He suddenly died, and shortly after, the phantom showed up at the house. He hung the bride's groom-to-be from the rafters, doomed Melanie Ravenwood (the bride's name)'s spirit to haunt the house in loneliness and despair, and isolated the manor from the rest of Thunder Mesa."

    I think what’s so interesting about this ride is that it’s the first and most notable haunted mansion where they explicitly went out side of Walt’s guidelines. He always said some thing like we take care of the outside the ghosts take care of the inside. Meaning the outside looks clean but the inside can be as creepy as it wants. The dilapidated state of the manor and its grounds are unlike any other. I think it’s also worthy to note that the house was built over a sacred native site so that’s why melody’s father was moved to commit such tragedies. This ride is by far the most interesting and eye catching of the haunted mansions and I HIGHLY suggest visiting Euro Disney, lord knows they need it.

      It's the one reason why I love Phantom Manor (I tend to be a sucker for Gothic plots like this one, but that's besides the point). The fact that they put a story to such an iconic ride and gave a new twist to it is very clever. The characters in this story actually connect to the another ride in the park. I believe the father of the daughter was the owner of a railroad company that was more or less part of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I saw a video mentioning it on a countdown talking about the creepiest animatronics in the global parks in disney (you can find it on youtube still)

      anyhoo, the history is very convoluted and changed over the course of more than a decade, so this place benefitted from all that.

    Unlike the party that is going on in the haunted mansion attractions in the states, this story is actually much darker and indeed depressing. You go through the house and meet Melanie Ravenswood as we see how she grows older and becomes a ghost (the only good ghost) where you as a visitor literally go to hell where you can see Thunder Mesa in the underworld that the earthquake caused at Thunder mountain. Her father (The phantom) keeps her prisoner and the last scene shows that she pulls you out of hell, back into the manor ... But Melanie will suffer forever under the shadow of the phantom as punishment because she wanted to marry a simple railway worker ... who was killed by the phantom before (stretching room) where each stretch painting shows how she dies in several ways. This is probably the darkest story of all Disneyland attractions with no happy ending and no silly spooks, but demons. We Europeans like dark stuff, if a house is haunted, let it be by demons than to scare the kids with it. :)

    • @santajackfan101
      @santajackfan101 Před rokem +1

      I love Phantom Manor too but you're incorrect about some of your information with all due respect. There are silly Spooks in the attraction. They're still the same 999 happy haunts according to Disney! After all that's why the theme song is grim grinning ghosts. And there is no he'll scene. The finale is called Phantom Canyon which is supposed to be a ghost town version and all the ghosts are still friendly just like an all the other haunted mansions. Phantom Manor was designed to have the same fun-loving atmosphere just as the other haunted mansions. Because just like on the other haunted mansions the ghost don't intend to hurt anybody and just want to have a good time. Disney has even confirmed it

      Knubbin Read the story of Phantom Manor. It will make more sense. Its set in a fictional western town called Thunder Mesa.

    • @MissFlow
      @MissFlow Před 7 lety +22

      I will explain:
      The scene in the western town may seem out of place, so does the skeleton tunnel along with the singing busts, but these scenes are part of the storyline actually. This western town is in reality: Thunder Mesa! But AFTER the great earthquake! This disaster killed all it's inhabitants and the Phantom, you see appear in the ride a couple of times, invited these deceased to come back to live! This is what starts in the skeleton scene, and goes further in the Thunder Mesa scene (now know as Phantom Canyon).
      I am aware that if you don't know this storyline, it may come very out of the blue and people blame this version for not having a graveyard with jolly good ghosts and singing busts like the original HM has. But that's in this version just not part of the story and it makes Phantom Manor an unique treat!
      Of course many disagree with me and that fine!
      But we can all agree that PM is múch darker and doesn't goof around like at áll!

    • @115DELDE
      @115DELDE Před 6 lety +19

      It´s confusing if you don´t know the story of the Phantom Manor, which is very different from the ones in the States. The Phantom Manor shares a connected story with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad rollercoaster.
      The owner of the Mansion is the founder Big Thunder Mesa (the rollercoaster). The owner was in the area looking for gold and to become rich. Then one day he stroke gold in Big Thunder. He they founded the mining company, and with the gold and other minerals found he created the western town and a nice mansion right on top of a hill looking at the mining company.
      The Natives (Indians) warned the man that if he kept digging through the mountain, one day the Spirit animal (an eagle) would destroy the entire area by causing an earthquake.
      The founder of Big Founder at the time got married and had a daughter. The duaghter grew old enough to marry and wanted to marry a young man who was a train conductor who promised the daughter that he would take her away from Big Thunder (because she was tired of living in the middle of nowhere). Her father, the owner of Big Thunder was against the wedding, and did everything in his power to stop the wedding. Then one day, an earthquake occured (the miners dug too deep into Big Thunder releasing the Thunder Bird). Both the father and the mother of the daughter died.
      The daughter, now bride could now get married without her father interrupting.
      During the wedding the Groom disappeared and died, by a mysterious figure (the Phantom). The phantom prevented the wedding and from then on decided to stay in the manor and reside in it for eternity. As years past, the wide did nothing but look for her groom. She grew old, she never took off her wedding dress, the mood was depressing. The phantom to "lighting" the mood kept inviting ghosts into the Manor, so that the wedding festivities never ended (an endless wedding party).
      The dead took over the Manor and the old town as well (hence the western land of the dead).
      [Now jumping into the present]
      Travellers who find the manor hear music from the distance, they see a mansion in decay but the music is so inviting that you do nothing else but enter the house, there you find a butler welcoming you in to the last party you´ll ever be in for eternity.
      This is basically the story of the Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris. The details are not 100% but it´s basically that.

    I love the creepy tone of this ride and the story. In the elevator section when being welcomed to the ride you see the phantom kill the groom if you are quick enough. I also love the ghost tone that was destroyed by an earthquake. I think the phantom is the brides father as the murdered groom was a common miner and bride was mine owners only daughter.

      Why would it be irrelevant? The stretching room has different paintings compared to its HM counterparts and the ceiling scene is slightly different as well. You can still enjoy the scenery even if you don't understand what's being said. I couldn't speak french when I was little and I found the stretching room just as amazing as I do now, when I can understand what's being said.
      If language is the issue, I'm sure someone would've been happy to provide subtitles. There's also the old English audio voiced by Vincent Price that could've been pasted over that scene if needed.

    This one just doesn't have the same feel that made the original so great. It doesn't have the funeral bit, the attic, it goes through the house so quickly. Then the graveyard is so morbid where the original was a bit more lighthearted. Instead was the western town. Like how do you get that out of a New Orleans mansion? I do like some of the updates like the effects, but I prefer the original.

    For everybody who seems to hate Phantom Manor just because it's not a note for note copy of the Haunted Mansion:
    Thunder Mesa, the spooky town that 'replaces' the graveyard scene in Phantom Manor was originally a concept that would have been realized was it not for some political and economical issues, and make it's way in the original Haunted Mansion. This was an idea after the one with the sea captain (the most early concept) was ditched. Haunted Mansion would have become as plot driven and story heavy as Phantom Manor is now.
    This makes Phantom Manor the father of all mansions to date, since one of the original ideas has been used for the european version after the american versions were finalized. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the guy who came up with Thunder Mesa and the idea to give the Haunted Mansion a more lineair narrative and story and if someone does let me know.
    Guys, you can hate Phantom Manor all you want. If the more darker tone is not your taste, that's fine. It's not everybody's cup of tea. But to hate it just because it's not Haunted Mansion by the book is just stupid.

    okay, the u.s. versions are a narrative disaster, and most of us probably know the story behind that. but, i like that freedom to make up my own story for it, not be fed a linear storyline. i like seemingly random ravens still with the animatronics that was meant to be the narrator. i like the remnants of the museum of the weird that made it in. i like that constance is a leftover from the captain gore storyline. i love how none of it makes not a lick of sense, as if a real haunted house with 999 ghosts from all over time would follow some kind of logic anyway.
