    Ted had a game show on VH1 where contestants competed in a bunch of Ted style challenges. It took place on his ranch in Texas. I think it's the first episode, but Ted makes all the contestants sleep outside on a bunch of hay, then proceeds to wake them up at 5 am by playing the national anthem on his guitar at full volume.

      Not so much. Hendrix completely revolutionized blues rock. 50+ years later you still hear his licks everywhere, and he still has one of the most distinctive, sought after tones ever. I’d love to hear about someone before him that even approaches his level of influence on the electric guitar.

Like Markus pointed out, there were many guitarists with a distinctive guitar sound before Hendrix ever picked up a guitar. Hell, Jimmy Rodgers had an unmistakable sound in the 20s long before Hendrix was born. Many blues musicians in the late 20s and 30s sited Rodgers as an influence on their playing and singing style.

I think Chuck Berry was the first guy to have a distinctive sound. Then Hendrix and Clapton developed their sound. They were the first guys to have a SOUND not just playing.

    Not anymore, but in my younger days, my friends and I were like this. People could be talking to us and we were actually listening, but playing guitar and getting into it at the same time. It was really annoying to the other person but we almost didn't even realize we were doing it.

    Edit: for those of you who message me saying that Ted Nugent put out his first album after Hendrix's passing, keep in mind that Nugent developed his signature sound while he was a guitarist for the Amboy Dukes. Check out "Journey to the Center of the Mind" for example, which came out in 1968.
