I loved this episode and the Pickett Fences episode. It taught a real and valuable and VERY common lesson. The world is a scary place, going into it is new and it can scare you and break you down. But you can conquer it. And it will take some time but once you do, it will be YOU who did it, and it will feel SO good to know that YOU can take care of yourself. And that's better than any easy help you can get. And in fact, the 'help' that you think is assisting you, is actually making things worse. It's kind of like that saying. "Catch a man a fish, and he eats for one day, teach a man how to fish, and he eats for the rest of his life."
In my opinion, that was the line that sealed the fact that although we joke about tapanga being the third wheel with the Cory and Sean relationship, that is now where the barrier is drawn and now tapanga comes first. Now Sean is the third wheel in a sense because he is his friend. Although he wants to help, Cory‘s marriage is with tapanga and they have to learn to figure it out for themselves.
Fuuuuuuck rewatching this is so hard. Especially, right after rewatching their first kiss. I wish Girl Meets World was nearly as great as this show was.
yeah but going through tough times proved their love was stronger than the obstacles...it was worth it....they weren't prepared....it made their bond stronger...it would cause most couples to come apart...not corey and Topanga....coreys parents knew this.....that's why they threw them out....you cant grow if your taken care of and just like themselves, his parents wanted to see if they could last and make it through....otherwise maybe they did get married too early....it was a challenge..
Disney doesn't have the... hmm, maturity level that Girl Meets World needed, I hope one day they make a more mature version of it, maybe when Maya and Riley are in college and it can be just a Disney+ thing so they can dig deeper and have real issues

They didn't hesitate to stress how important it is, to have solid convictions about the most important things in life. Cory was right in saying it was his job to solve this problem...because otherwise, why was he married? Love can do a lot, but you also have to be responsible...especially in the bad times.

I love this episode - The Arc where Shawn is the sensible one giving out the knowledge. You build your home out of a house. You take four walls and you chisel a home out of it with hard work and smart decisions. We're born into a home created by our parents over years, we need that lesson when we move out.
I love when he gets annoyed and tells them to have a little pride. Perfect, especially since Cory and Topanga both grew up with so much and Shawn didn't. They're being pretty entitled and that's the perfect/polite way to tell them to deal with it.

Well, that's real life, you know. They actually shows us the real struggle of young age marriage and they show us how they should solve the problems on their own to make the relationship work out. He may complain this and that, but you see how his family has brought him up, his family is not like Shawn's. Shawn's life had always been hard and he had to get through things by himself all his life, while Cory's life had always been easy, his parents gives him allowance whenever he do the right things. I actually liked their little starter apartment. The idea of living with the one you love and fixing up the place to how you want it. Minus the big black bugs because fuck those things.
Nothing breaks a man more than not being able to protect his wife and family! Cory is young but he's really making an honest effort to be a great husband! I can't remember the overall outcome, but I've always loved him and Topanga's relationship so I hope they were able to work it out...
BMW didn't necessarily start out that way. It took them maybe 3 or 4 years to address deeper issues. In its first few years, it was definitely a kid's show. But as the kids grew older, so did the stories and issues they tackled. This is from the 7th season where they're dealing with college and now marriage. With GMW, they only lasted 3 years with the main characters essentially JUST entering high school. Big difference was BMW was allowed to grow, whereas GMW wasn't.
@@miareyestoriz6886 Granted, Disney does have its own brand, and definitely puts its stamp on its shows now more than ever.... I still think the comparison between BMW and GMW are a bit unfair. A lot of what older fans consider more iconic moments of BMW, occured in the LATER seasons, when they were Juniors/Seniors in high-school, or freshmen in college. Another thing to was that BMW originally aired in a prime-time slot on a Friday night, whereas GMW aired on a straight-up Disney, kids-oriented block. BMW, just by nature of its time slot, was able to address more serious and adult topics without the constraints of a kids-show demographic/regulation.
This was the worst part about this show, Shawn could have handled that apartment fine, he wass used to being poor-cory/topanga who had everything handed to them were an instant mess
@@Michelle-pn9xt As I recall, neither were seen working a job when they first hit college (except the one episode where Topanga and Angela were waitresses, can't remember if that was during or after high school). We also see hints that Cory and siblings were spoiled when they were little; Eric trying to get his job back working their Dad, "You remember when I rolled bad in Monopoly and you'd call it a mis-roll and you'd let me roll again?" And how Morgan used to get a present on everyone ELSE'S birthday so she wouldn't feel bad. Basically they spent relatively little time as independent adults before tying the knot, and this episode is where that comes back to bite them.
When I was a kid, I couldn’t understand why Alan and Amy were so against helping Cory and Topanga, but, as an adult, I get it. This wasn’t just “playing house” anymore. They had to grow up and figure it out without mommy and daddy fixing everything. That being said, I think Alan could have been just a bit kinder and maybe offered to help TEACH Cory how to fix things around their place and stuff. Still letting Cory do it, but having the opportunity to show his son these things so he can carry that knowledge with him as his family grows.

it's tough love, but I'm glad Cory and Topanga weren't completely alone, they did have support, just not a bailout. I'm just glad that I knew how to do alot of the basic stuff when I was on my own for the first time.....although I would have been lost with the plumbing and been asking a lot of people.
Looks like it didn't fit the actor so wardrobe made a quick decision to fix it like this, thinking they'll not show the back of him. Alas..someone ignored wardrobe department and filmed it anyway

If this is the episode I'm thinking of, this is the one where Cory and Pangs go to Cory's parents to ask for help, because their apartment is just that nasty, broken down, and unliveable. And then Cory's parent's deny them help and says something like "they need to work through this as a married couple, they need to bond between this." Something like that. That is something I have always, always disagreed with. Your child does not stop being your child when they get married. Many married couples are poor, especially now, when they first tie the knot. When they and their spouse are hungry, you open up your home and you feed them, when they can't make the water bill, because their hours have been cut, you give them the money they need to make it. You are still a parent, and helping lighten the load in your child's life, even when they're grown up, is your job. In fact, that is the bare minimum of your responsibilities. And if anyone does see this comment on this older video, and you're thinking "it's just a sitcom from the 90s ans early 2000s," keep in mind these shows were meant to teach the audience something. And the message on this episode or near it, is that your kids need to suffer to appreciate their marriage in the long run is 100% incorrect. Even without financial issues, marriage is hard in the beginning because most people are still washing off those insecurities and the immaturity of being a teenager. And beginning your married life needing to cope with hunger, a lack of sleep, broken plumbing and not being able to pay someone to fix the basic necessities in your home...that is poverty. That is a fantastic way of inserting bitterness into a marriage. Anyway, my rant is over, that's just something that's always bothered me so much about this show. I'm not sure if I agree with everything it taught, but that one "lesson" is so dangerously untrue, I've just always wanted to say something about it.

i think that Shawn and Katy (Maya's mom) make a really cute couple and I hope they do actually have a good relationship and have a lot more scenes together...(i know they are not what the show is about......i just like them and think they have awesome chemistry)!! Also Corey and Topanga were and still are my favorite couple! :)

Nothing breaks a man more than not being able to protect his wife and family! Cory is young but he's really making an honest effort to be a great husband! I can't remember the overall outcome, but I've always loved him and Topanga's relationship so I hope they were able to work it out...

Disney was so different this show is so deep and real while girl meets world isn’t as deep and real
BMW didn't necessarily start out that way. It took them maybe 3 or 4 years to address deeper issues. In its first few years, it was definitely a kid's show. But as the kids grew older, so did the stories and issues they tackled. This is from the 7th season where they're dealing with college and now marriage. With GMW, they only lasted 3 years with the main characters essentially JUST entering high school. Big difference was BMW was allowed to grow, whereas GMW wasn't.

@@miareyestoriz6886 Granted, Disney does have its own brand, and definitely puts its stamp on its shows now more than ever.... I still think the comparison between BMW and GMW are a bit unfair. A lot of what older fans consider more iconic moments of BMW, occured in the LATER seasons, when they were Juniors/Seniors in high-school, or freshmen in college. Another thing to was that BMW originally aired in a prime-time slot on a Friday night, whereas GMW aired on a straight-up Disney, kids-oriented block. BMW, just by nature of its time slot, was able to address more serious and adult topics without the constraints of a kids-show demographic/regulation.

This was the worst part about this show, Shawn could have handled that apartment fine, he wass used to being poor-cory/topanga who had everything handed to them were an instant mess

@@Michelle-pn9xt As I recall, neither were seen working a job when they first hit college (except the one episode where Topanga and Angela were waitresses, can't remember if that was during or after high school). We also see hints that Cory and siblings were spoiled when they were little; Eric trying to get his job back working their Dad, "You remember when I rolled bad in Monopoly and you'd call it a mis-roll and you'd let me roll again?" And how Morgan used to get a present on everyone ELSE'S birthday so she wouldn't feel bad. Basically they spent relatively little time as independent adults before tying the knot, and this episode is where that comes back to bite them.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t understand why Alan and Amy were so against helping Cory and Topanga, but, as an adult, I get it. This wasn’t just “playing house” anymore. They had to grow up and figure it out without mommy and daddy fixing everything.
That being said, I think Alan could have been just a bit kinder and maybe offered to help TEACH Cory how to fix things around their place and stuff. Still letting Cory do it, but having the opportunity to show his son these things so he can carry that knowledge with him as his family grows.

it's tough love, but I'm glad Cory and Topanga weren't completely alone, they did have support, just not a bailout. I'm just glad that I knew how to do alot of the basic stuff when I was on my own for the first time.....although I would have been lost with the plumbing and been asking a lot of people.

If this is the episode I'm thinking of, this is the one where Cory and Pangs go to Cory's parents to ask for help, because their apartment is just that nasty, broken down, and unliveable. And then Cory's parent's deny them help and says something like "they need to work through this as a married couple, they need to bond between this." Something like that.
That is something I have always, always disagreed with. Your child does not stop being your child when they get married. Many married couples are poor, especially now, when they first tie the knot. When they and their spouse are hungry, you open up your home and you feed them, when they can't make the water bill, because their hours have been cut, you give them the money they need to make it. You are still a parent, and helping lighten the load in your child's life, even when they're grown up, is your job. In fact, that is the bare minimum of your responsibilities.
And if anyone does see this comment on this older video, and you're thinking "it's just a sitcom from the 90s ans early 2000s," keep in mind these shows were meant to teach the audience something. And the message on this episode or near it, is that your kids need to suffer to appreciate their marriage in the long run is 100% incorrect.
Even without financial issues, marriage is hard in the beginning because most people are still washing off those insecurities and the immaturity of being a teenager. And beginning your married life needing to cope with hunger, a lack of sleep, broken plumbing and not being able to pay someone to fix the basic necessities in your home...that is poverty. That is a fantastic way of inserting bitterness into a marriage.
Anyway, my rant is over, that's just something that's always bothered me so much about this show. I'm not sure if I agree with everything it taught, but that one "lesson" is so dangerously untrue, I've just always wanted to say something about it.
Glad that Corey and Topanga figured it out.
