In this video I upgraded an entry level BMC Teammachine SLR Five, with Shimano 105 and some Mavic Open Disc alloy wheels, with some latex tubes and some Vittoria Corsa race tyres. How much better does it roll and how does it compare to the top of the range BMC Teammachine SLR01 Two, with Dura Ace and DT Swiss carbon hoops? You'll have to watch to find out.

Mate as long as your method is solid what does it matter if you get paid anyway. The method is transparent and the data is displayed for everyone to see. Wish people would stop cutting CZcamsrs down while taking their content for free. There’s irony there somewhere.
Calm down mate , a trolling comment is better than no comment , CZcamsrs love comments shitty or not
@@saxon1376 alright well let’s keep the banter going then mate. You don’t reckon they’d prefer positive comments? Also, reckon my comment was pretty chill buddy.
@@burgess_and_his_bikethe youtube algorithm is boosted by the number of interactions. Whether they're good or bad. Often bad comments get more people interacting to complain about it. Which boosts the video's presence into the feeds of more people. Good comments typically don't get a reply and maybe just a thumbs up. Which is actually worse for boosting the algorithm and helping more people find the video.
It's a double edge sword. It's also how so much fake garbage and conspiracy theory videos get bumped higher. Which then gathers even more views.
So every time you see some cunt in the comment section be sure you reply to them. It should help the channel lol.
@@saxon1376 Correct: a click is a click and counts whether it's positive or negative
@burgess_and_his_bike method definitely matters but and sponsorship does too. It's easy to not note how huge of a wind difference there is in a test. It really needs to be quantified or you need significantly more runs to zero out the bad data
What this video has taught me is that wind beats $6500.00
Keep going Cam. At least you’re up front about the relationship with BMC. Not like some others out there.
Aero wheelset with similar rim, and tighter more aero bars (even aluminium like pro vibe aero) should get you the rest of the way.
basicly dame upgrades iv just done went with a set of craftworx ultima 60deep and pro vive aero aloy bars
Been waiting for this. I like the step by step approach. It’s more natural and realistic like us normal bike enthusiasts would do.
The kangaroos boxing the shit out of each other line had me rolling on the ground more efficient than a new set of tyres on the cheaper bike
Woke up to a beautiful morning and chose violence
I never timed things out but switching to TPU tubes has made a difference for me for sure. Beyond being faster my spare tubes are tiny and much easier to pack for a ride. Win win type of situation. Haven’t had any issues with punctures or ride quality.
Strava keeps reporting PRs, for both climbs and descents, ever since I installed tpu tubes. The effect is very real and noticable (max speeds are also up by 3-4km, across the board). Same bike, same guy, same tires.
Kudos to you man for going through such a tedious testing process and still people find holes in it🤦♂️
My Specialized sl3 with zips is still getting podiums in B grade
Love an old school rim bike!
*update just got 2nd
No longer racing on the road, but with all the upgrades I've made to my 2011 Madone, I reckon it would still be very competitive. The frame profile doesn't look that different to a current Emonda. And I suspect mine is a lot lighter.
Kuddos to you for all the computer and tech work you do to provide all the data you provide. Unbelievable amount of detailed information for those interested not to mention all the physical work of changes the tubes and tires. Thanks for all your hard work!
this is awesome. testing accurately and consistently is insanely hard and often thankless. thanks for all hard work.
After that nugget Anchorman reference, you have to label the BMC SLR 01 the "Sex Panther"
Silver Fox vs Sex Panther would be funny… but not as funny as “it smells like Bigfoot’s D…” 😂😂
Hahaha perfect
Great vid Cam love the comedy comments and relaxed format of this vid 😂 😊 🚴🏻👍 Pete
Thank you, Cam! You do great work man! Equitable fair and thought out!
Thanks cam for confirming my suspicion about the chain. Not only does it have a psychological difference we now know it has a real difference! It not just “in your head!”
For the upgrade, because the test will be done on minimal wind day - get the deepest wheels that you can, say Elite drive 50D's or 65Ds w/ceramic bearings ($1189) , TPU inners , Maxxis High Road SL tyres that match the outer width of the rim and an alloy Shimano Vibe Pro 38cm with integrated routing into an stem that allows routing that is fixed below the stem and if there is some change, a chain wax. Oh and lastly, dont have our bro Terence near the test, d'ckhead is -12watts standing still.
I have been waiting for this video for literally 21 days
I run Ridenow TPUs since last year and no problems. Its nice that they are light as well. Never tried latex.
Latex is more supple, but otherwise feel much like Ridenows.
I've been on them since September '23, really enjoying them.
Only two issues, was that the front one started leaking around the valve in February. And my hand pump can't inflate them.
Definitely looking forward to the new ones with the metal threaded valve.
Same love them. Just had my first flat with them. Pinched it in a pot hole. They deflated slower than normal rubber tube that was nice.
RideNow tpu are great. And you don't need to pump them up before every ride.
@@Philatlondon1 exactly, i only get a 10 PSI drop over 4 days maybe.
Love the videos and the comedy thrown in. Keep it up.
The part from 4:15 onwards immediately made me liked this video, even before I go through the results of the test. Solid lad.
Great effort!
Great mix of fun-entertainining-but not as science driven as practically possible. Great content!
Love your videos :) Keep going!
Great content, thanks!
I love this series, because ...I have the same silver fox ^^ keep'em coming!!
Hi Cam, been watching your videos for a long time and there just awesome! Some of the best on youtube 👍 i did lighter tyres and TPU tubes on my road bike and it made a massive difference
I love the bmc content
Keep up the good work
Ps im in the uk it also has been raining for months
The kind of videos we love
Cam been watching your videos for many years now and as a ‘bike nut’ following many bike channels, i can say unequivocally you are one of the most honest and impartial out there! Cracking channel, always informative and entertaining . Keep it up mate! 🇬🇧
Thanks Cam. It's so easy to forget how much planning, time and effort goes into making the ~11mins of video we see. Interesting to hear that the Vittoria/Mavic combo is potentially lots of fun at the side of the road. I suppose if you got hookless rims they'd come off with very little effort (if your name is Thomas De Gendt)
Great video
Totally a Worth while test it shows a cheap upgrade fitting racing tyres with latex tubes works however have you prodded the sleeping Lion now your subscribers will want 40 more combinations get ready i can feel it coming.a informative video thanks.
Cheers for the vid. Differences are there of course but pretty subtle. Reading the marketing you'd think there'd be 30seconds between each run!
Hi there Cam, I appreciate the clarity you provided in this video.
Just a few quick questions if I may.
Since BMC provides you with a bike every year and do not pay you cash, I am just wondering
1) what happens when & if you race it in a crit and crash it?
2) once you’ve chosen a bike, can you change it to something else like to a Kaius or something?
It looks like the old Lexus might need some new front tyres too!
I do enjoy these sorts of videos, keen to see which wheel set you choose for the Silver Fox
The old Lexus has gone to heaven now 😢 but you are right, that front tyre was shot!
Love your channel, watched for years. Don't worry too much about placating the trolls. Trolls are trolls, they can't help it.
Cam, love your content , editing and delivery style… very entertaining!… just a question - if you were to close your eyes (figuratively), on the silver fox, how is the feel, quality of ride, comfort, other intangibles etc compare to the super bike?
One of the best upgrades for a race or TT is to go to the toilet for a dump just before the start. Loose 500 grammes or more for no cost, or small entry fee to the toilet.
Hi Cam, Once youve unlocked the keys to speeding old silver fox up, it would be very fun to watch you make it as slow as possible - akin to a proper winter bike clunker that [some of] us lot in the uk/northern europe have. I'm thinking Schwalbe touring tyres, Sh Tourney 7speed and mechanical disc brakes, and comedy mudguards. Cheers for the good work :D m
upgrades: (used or new) SLR 01 Fork to route cables internally.$300-450 stem/handlebar combo from like Yoeleo or EXS or winspace (something fairly reputable). $1000 Wheelsfar (farsport) carbon spoke wheels - 50x31.5 at 1200 grams (half my race team has these wheels). $60 3d saddle from aliexpress. plus tires and tubes you already have. My guess is your bike with these upgrades will be about 500 grams heavier than the super bike, but should then perform just as well. This would be roughly at the $2K upgrade price point in USD depending on the cost of the fork.
Whether cam does this or not, thanks for the ideas for me. If half a race team has those wheels they must be ok. I saw this back when Hunt wheels was starting in 2015, once half the crit track had them it was a great indicator!
Interesting tests Cam, and a good illustration that the margins between upper and mid tier bikes can be relatively marginal vs the difference in cost. Did you consider looking at the average heart rate when using each bike on the hill climb test as a way of identifying any difference in physiological cost when riding at a constant power output?
Love the Chopper reference 😂😂😂
TPU over Latex all day... plus Tpu's are lighter and dont lose psi by the hour.
I’m a trek madone rider, on my third. Why not bmc? Your channel your choice.👍🏻
Also as the guy pointed out the dirty chain, tyres with 500 miles on them are slower. .1 watt difference between the tubes against the flu.
Supposedly 1 kilo is equivalent to 5 watts up a climb so saving 100gs will be barely be noticeable.
Zero friction cycling has tons of data on how many watts a chain can drain from you. 10 or 15 watts from a dirty chain isn't a big deal for casual riding but it certainly makes a difference for tests like this. Even the brand of chain can be about 2 or 3 watt difference when all else is equal.
It's one of the reasons I switched to Silca hot wax. Fastest lube, dirt gets carried out as you ride rather than mixing with a wet lube and turning into a grinding paste, and you can put your fingers all over the drive train with absolutely no oil or greasy residue whatsoever. Your chain needs to be CLEAN before the first time you wax it though. I mean like surgical levels of clean. Much easier if you start with a brand new chain.
Love your videos fella. There's always going to be the occasional 'expert' that feels the need to criticise (usually owns a channel with no subscribers and no content). But I see you going to great lengths to do real-world testing that actually means something to real cyclists. And, like others have said - what the Hell if you get some sort of support from a manufacturer - bills gotta get paid and all that - doesn't take anything away for me.
I really think that a powerpoint needs to make it's way onto the channel :D
I'd be interested in a rolldown test of butyl, latex and tpu on the same bike. The Silver Fox was sporting 1 latex and 1 tpu during the tests and I expect that there is not much difference but until tests are done there's no test results to work from.
MS Excel is enough for now. 😂
Just make sure that the pen is working
Awesome vlog as always Cam. Pity you can’t put another rider on both bikes to do the same test. The result should be the same. But a lighter rider may roll further on the heavier bike.
Although not really scientific, your experience really shows the impact of "real" world things like wind that can impact riding and overall "speed". Thanks for sharing the data as well.
Are you going to do a review on the Creative Ultra wheels I saw for a second in your video? On paper (my monitor) the specs are pretty damn impressive. Better than the CRW and local
Chopper and Cycling crossover was not what I expected, but was what I wanted.
very cool test!! what is the best road bike to buy between 3000$ and 3500$ usd?
Durianrider did a similar test up Norton Summit - top of the range Giant TCR vs bargain basement Giant ….TCR won by a huge 12 seconds ….😳😳😳😳
That’s a significant difference…if you’re a pro.
thanks Cam. the naysayers can choose to watch something else for free. I now prefer tpu over latex. They hold air the same or better than butyl, lighter and rolling resistance as good or better than latex.
Please buy a set of wheels off Podium Panda. The CRW works CS6575s run it with 28s for me. There only 1450 grams.
Great video.
I run TPU tubes love them.
Just letting you know that the first shipment of BMC Team Machine R bikes have just been delivered to local bike shops in Australia.
Watching this eating lunch in the Junction and wondering if Cam will walk by and have an inception moment
Reckon you should be paid. Your review is honest..
Good job i prefer continental gp5000 25 mm with vittoria laytex ( early. season i have “slower wheels with generic tires of different types and butyl tubes…the feel and grip on a good quality tire is well worth ut
Any day that gets Neville Bartos on my mind is a good day.
Switch to waxed chain on the cheap bike.
the idea is great, but tbh I don't expect much of a difference between these bikes to begin with. After all the "cheap" bike isn't entry level at all, it is a very good bike, and beside being a bit lighter and having not that status it doen't lack that much. Even more interesting it would be to test how close you can get to the super bike with affordable upgrades, when you take a real entry level bike as base
Have you tried the Tyre Glider to change your tires? It's made it easier for me.
Hope you will get a new 2024 roadmachine aswell sometime
Cam Amazon has a pair of Superteam wheels with carbon spokes weight 1395 gram for $469 USD.
what data overlay do you use?
I noticed immediately once i went to rwce level tyres and latex tubes
Cam the wind usually drops during the night, so.... it's time to get some lights mate 🤣
At 3:51, you're only cleaning the outside of the chain, which is pointless for short-term performance. You're only removing the grinding paste.
Put the chain in a bottle with degreeser and shake it, as this will penetrate the insides (pins and rollers) of the chain.
Also, you should be cross-chained with relubing, as that will get more lube into the pins and rollers. I remember hearing that a chain lubed when cross-chained was heavier, as it held more lube.
What do you think of TPU tubes Cam?
Must be so gratifying to scrub your ring.😊
@hambini has entered the chat
I'm not a physicist, but would a roll downhill on the bikes work. You wouldn't have to worry about pedaling watts, just push off and hang on. Check avg speed and time at the end. Would that work or can someone explain why it wouldn't, so I can learn something. thanks
Hoo boy! We’re talking marginal gains here, aren’t we? I have yet to go tubeless; I ride on Hed Jet Black 6 wheels with Specialized Turbo Cotton tires(26mm front and the 28mm rear) and Challenge latex tubes. I love the combination and get really good mileage out of the mix. I have found that if I do not coat the tubes and the insides of the tires with talcum powder, BEFORE mounting them, that the reliability goes right down the toilet. I think the latex tubes cannot squirm freely enough inside the apparently latex-coated tires and the tubes don’t like that.
👍🏼
would recommend an ultrasonic cleaner to remove the need to scrub chains and cassettes.
Best Budget aero wheels I would say.
I still Continental Gatorskins, slow maybe, but pretty good tyre for me who's a endurance wannabe rider c:
Chelsea
A pro road bike CZcams content creator who doesn't keep his drivetrain clean?! Dude, what's wrong with you?! 😂😜
Cam I was thinking it would be very easy to have disc brakes rub happen during testing.
I'm Neville Bartos you remember that.
The price difference between bikes is very large. It makes me think, that unless you're actively racing, it's just not worth it. What time difference might you achieve if you increased your FTP by 10 watts, or, if you carry excess weight, reduced it? The TPU tubes represent a good investment, in that they're apparently more puncture resistant and have lower rolling resistance that a standard tube. If you puncture it's many minutes and hastle onto your ride.
BMC TM SLR FIVE is entry level bike?
if your bike comes with stock alu shallow wheelset with butyl + budget tire, upgrading to tpu +race tire of same size, the feel changed is for real. you'll be dropping more than 200g easy, and the weight reduction at rolling mass 🫡 . try this first before upgrading wheelset, as its significantly cheaper upgrade n can carry over later👌
Dude I would like to think BMC are paying you every time the brand is shown in a video, with nearly 200k subs. 😮
Hey Cam, never mind upgrading your bike tyres but your car front tyres needs looking at.
It looks like your car front wheels tracking is out and the tyre is down to thread! Better check it.
The old Lexus has now fully died and gone to heaven James. I should have replaced that front tyre though, yes! I was just holding out as the car was packing in.
Latex tubes for the win. An easy upgrade.
‘ The Kangaroos are boxing the shit out of each other ‘ .. Best comment ever , I nearly choked on my breakfast 😂
When do you expect the next vid in the series? With upgraded wheels?
BMC of Theseus coming up soon
Great series pal, i even decided to hit the subscribe and a like so i can see how this plays out…. i live in England and i love cycling not enough to blow my beans on a superbike but im always interested in things that can make my £1500 bike faster, for all the haters watching your vids “f#£k off and boil an egg” with your 11 spare minutes of your day 😎👌🏼
If a dirty chain slows you down maybe you need to spend less time cleaning and more time riding....
Run the same tests at the crit track, just swap the wheels!
I’m sure joe from panda podium can help figure the best $2kusd upgrade
Your Lexus looks like it needs new tires. That appears to be belt showing on that front left tire in the video.
After couple of years we loose some common sense. A Carbon, 105 bike is definately NOT an enty level bike. Enter level may be some aluminium bike on Claris or Sora that costs maybe 500-600€.
I got about 2 km per hour difference. When in mid 20 km per hour rides
4:19 Summarizes my own ability to perform research online.
Also, great meme game buddy. Sex panthers one is a classic
How many BMC bikes do you actually have currently?
In the end what bike you use doesn't matter much in terms of performance. It's more about the ride feel, looks and bragging rights.
