    I’m a math teacher. Kids seem to really struggle with mixing problems where your looking to get a certain percentage at the end. Actually - when I used to work at a plastics company I had someone argue that you can’t compare countries because they are different sizes. Which totally misses the whole point of percentages. Always glad to see math being used effectively! yay Ann!

    • @russianbot8576
      @russianbot8576 Před 2 lety +8

      it seems that in general, barring the group in the wider population that has to work with maths daily or frequently enough, exponential and logarithmic thinking is particularly difficult. i don't think this is necessarily a failing of maths classes or whatever, we just have to be trained to think that way instead of strictly linearly.
      a lot of adults screw this up too. this happens often when talking about, say, medical half-lifes (in the interest of preventing tolerance increase) or even when talking about political issues like nuclear waste maintenance or CO^2 emissions atmospherically. compare to the more mundane task of tackling debt interest or calorie counting for dieting or something, which don't require exponential thinking, and it illustrates why this may be hard even for average (non-maths/science fielded) adults. this is also why studies using logarithmic graphs are hard to parse for journalists who aren't strictly in the field of scientific research writing.
      (on a different note i would find it interesting to see the sociopsychology difference between students who take well to exponential thinking and those who don't. as someone who did well with calculus and chemistry, i wonder if there is some predisposition that enabled it to come easier than some of my peers.)

      My mom and my husband are both pretty smart people yet I keep having to re-explain this concept to them.
      Is it just because people are not used to calculating on a daily basis?
      Are we not explaining it well? Is it really that much difference to saying “a third of something “ and “splitting something in three equal parts”

    I found it hilarious that the person making "disinfectant" had 70% rubbing alcohol, but instead of just using the alcohol to disinfect surfaces, they dilute it down with vinegar to make disinfectant. 70% alcohol on its own, in a spray bottle, would work a lot better as disinfectant, we use it in research lab settings all the time to sterilise surfaces.

    • @Panbaneesha
      @Panbaneesha Před 4 lety +176

      Exactly. I used to work in a pharmacy, and every German pharmacy has to have a small lab. We used 70% isopropyl alcohol to disinfect everything in that lab. And the 70% percent works better than the 99%, too. Because even though the alcohol content needs to be high, it breaks down microorganisms better when there's some water present. Also, it takes longer to dry and gives the alcohol more time to work. You should only use it on hands when there's no water/soap available, though, because it dries out the skin.

People that work with clothing for example, need to be able to measure and to be aware of the area that the clothing needs to be around, it's way more complicated than just sewing some cloths together. So yeah, pretty much all professions need math knowledge, and that is without considering how everybody needs to calculate in order to pay bills and not get ripped off, be sure of how much is your change when you buy stuff and even when you want to replace some things in your house, you'll need to be aware of space, area and geometry.

Most importantly I wear them properly and handle them properly and continue to wash my hand and social distance.
      Even if my area has a low transmission rate - it is never zero and I do not want to be part of a spike lol.
      The troubling part is.. Now that few people are even reporting that they have covid (home tests) and we only get to see numbers that might be reported for the more serious cases that end up in hospital and/or dead.

    I know we’re a year plus into this: grain alcohol/EverClear or Isopropyl Alcohol 99 are all now easily available in concentrations over 95%. While this particular (the original, NOT the variants still in research) strain of CoV (coronavirus) does not have as long of a viable fomite (on surfaces) form: high risk individuals should STILL be taking precautions, even if you’ve had the vaccine. Some of the variants are showing higher virulence (transmissibility), higher mortality rates, and NONE of the vaccines are 100% against ANY of the strains-even the originals. (We had identified 3 very close variants early on in the pandemic). The bottom line is this coronavirus is going to be around for a long time in one form or another. If you have 1 or more of the risk factors: take as many precautions as you are willing to do, if you suspect exposure or an infection, get tested EARLY-(early treatment is key, especially with the monoclonal antibodies now available to more than just the rich and powerful), keep yourself and especially your immune system as healthy as possible (Vit D, C and Zinc have all been shown in studies to strengthen the immune cells this virus “attacks”.
    Yes, I’m a retired infectious disease specialist and researcher who also happens to be high risk due to chronic kidney disease from a genetic disorder. Believe me, I haven’t seen my children, nor much of anyone else in this past year. When I HAVE to go out or be around others, I basically wear PPE’s. I’m also a cancer survivor with 2 autoimmune diseases and all of my Docs have agreed, COVID IS a death sentence for me.
    However, I want to stress something I believe is even more important now that folks are starting to relax their standards, believing we MUST be close to herd immunity..OR, even worse, if you’re a healthy 35yr old, with no risk factors, you have nothing to worry about. THIS IS NOT TRUE! My daughter is a nurse in an emergency room and despite taking precautions, she, her husband and his parents (in their early 60’s) got it. My daughter was the only one with risk factors, but got lucky; her husband and his father, after early mild infections-she came home one day to find her husband unconscious on the floor. He had what some of us call a COVID Stroke. He’s 35, ran marathons, no health issues. He spent 3 months in ICU, and is still in rehab, learning to walk talk and function again. His father wasn’t so lucky. At 62, no other risk factors, he had a mild infection for the first 5 days, was feeling better, went to sleep and woke up unable to breathe. He was on a vent within an hour and passed away the next day.
    There is NO WAY to tell whether you will be an unlucky one. We’ve had larger numbers of young people going critical the past few months, (we assume from a variant, but since we didn’t start mass testing for variants until the new administration came into office; we are still trying to get our bearings. I WILL say that our numbers have been MUCH higher than publicly reported. We were kind of muzzled this past year and my colleagues were banned from doing post-mortem testing for the virus; regular testing in many areas was only done if you were admitted or symptomatic and could prove exposure AND had risk factors. Our tiny local community hospital was completely overwhelmed, dealt with extreme shortages of PPE’s and we had choppers in here Jan 21st transporting patients to a nearby state.
    The bottom line is this is NOT over and we don’t know if we are through the worse yet. We’ve identified 6 new variants originating here in the US alone, (so far-the longer it spreads to a large number of people of various ethnic groups, ages, etc; the more likely more mutations); and personally, that South African strain has many of us very concerned. (Many cases are reinfection, with the original virus showing little to no antibody effect against that strain. This also means it’s likely the vaccines won’t be effective-or at least, not as effective. Almost all of the reinfections have gone critical)
    PLEASE KEEP YOURSELVES SAFE AND PROTECT OTHERS! (Comply with shut downs and quarantines-THEY SAVE LIVES! Wear masks around others, (if you’re high risk, double mask and use a face shield!), Social Distance! Because I am high risk, I wait 3-6 hours to bring mail or packages in, then spray with 90% alcohol.) WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN/use sanitizer and DON’T forget that this virus would LOVE to sneak in through a crack in dry skin-STAY MOISTURIZED! ❤️
    PS I wanted to add a few more things. Although coronaviruses have been around for millions of years-THIS is a BRAND NEW VIRUS!. MANY are misinforming, counting on people taking what certain media says and not having much of a memory..OR Not connecting SARS-1 and MERS, which have been around for years, to coronavirus. Despite YEARS of INTENSIVE RESEARCH, there are still NO VACCINES and no real treatments with high efficacy against these two coronaviruses that are SIMILAR BUT NOT THE SAME as COVID-19. Despite COVID-19 being around for a year and obvious,y being VERY intensively studied; we STILL have many questions about its effects on the body, different races and ethnicities and even its transmissibility. On top of that, we now have the mutations popping up that have to be investigated as if they are a completely new virus.
    Also-as far as the masks-I’m sure you’re aware there are further studies showing their efficacy. 2 things, first, and most important: one factor and characteristic of this virus that we DO know is that severity of infection has been connected to viral load-or how many viral particles find their way inside. Masks can DRASTICALLY reduce viral load, even in a highly contagious, closed in area-HOWEVER, realize that the eyes have also been shown as frequent primary entry points! That’s why I said if you are high risk, wear a face shield or goggles around others.
    I have been teased, even harassed by locals recently when I mask-up and wear gloves just to carry Mail inside. Many of my neighbors are, unfortunately, caught up in some of the conspiracies. When my close friend (and physician) came here last week to draw blood from me and had on PPE’s-oddly, those same people who had harassed me about “this mild flu” freaked out and wanted to know if they needed to disinfect their homes (they assumed I had COVID). At LEAST this gave us the opportunity to explain to them that I simply am not ready to die yet. I not only haven’t been harassed since, some neighbors shoveled my snow and asked through a community bulletin board if I needed anything.
    The main discrepancy about masks here in the US at the beginning of COVID Last year was a SEVERE SHORTAGE of masks, gloves and other PPE for hospital, lab and research professionals. My daughter had to wear the SAME MASK FOR 2 weeks, and the same flimsy isolation gown for over a week. Our once world renowned CDC went so far as to change 100 year old isolation procedures on the website to try and misdirect and misinform the public. Of COURSE people were confused! One friend who used to work at a US Medical supply company, was directed to send over 5 million masks to a country I won’t name-by our Dept of Homeland Security, DURING THIS SHORTAGE when we had to all but stop most mass testing because we just didn’t have the swabs or protective equipment for our own people. (PS it was NOT China..but close!). He refused, threatened to go to the media and lost his job. (That’s ok, he’s back at the CDC now!) and PLEASE, NO ONE SAY “well, the previous administration left the shelves bare!” The most recent previous administration had been in power for 3 years when this pandemic hit. They laid off THOUSANDS connected with virus detection, tracking, control and material supply for emergencies. Just 5 months before COVID a mass viral mock even took place in DC and our shortcomings were put out there and put front and center in front of that administration, they chose not to act on it.
    MASKS WORK! BUT, The most important thing if you are high risk? STAY ISOLATED! YES, It’s hard, inconvenient and can get depressing. I have personally found ways to stay busy, active and have plenty of online communication with friends and former colleagues around the world. I have even given lectures for a nearby medical school, the local hospital and my daughter’s ER. I’ve even been holding some informal classes with college students in China, of all places, on US Civics and history, (in return for language lessons, painting and calligraphy!) the ONLY way we will ALL get through this is by working together, and especially, staying informed with the correct scientific information!

      @@estherpettigrew3042 I wanted to reply to you for two VERY important reasons. The first: my precious son, my youngest, and very healthy except that, like myself, he was born with just 1 kidney. Our kidney has vessels that are narrower and have thicker walls than “normal” people. Regardless, when he contracted COVID last year, he had a healthy immune system and got through it as most 31yr olds did; no discernible long-lasting effects. Despite COVID having a history of causing blood clots, as well as personal experience with my Son-in-law; it didn’t occur to us that my Son could have asymptomatic blood clots in his kidney. He did, and on June 19, after cooking a huge “international” meal for friends and having a few drinks…he went to sleep and didn’t wake up. The coroner found more small clots in his kidney and said that just a few drinks was enough to loosen some…he died of a stroke.
      We have been devastated and my own health began going downhill. After spending most of Sept in hospitals for congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema and pneumonia, I was discharged Oct 7. When I was discharged, that hospital was dealing with a surge of the Delta variant. The nurses and doctors, even on our small non-COVID unit; were over-worked and burned out. Over 95% of the hundreds of critical or serious patients they had- were unvaccinated. 4 days after discharge, my temperature spiked to 103…I knew what it was. As freaked out as me and my girls were, we decided treating myself at home as long as possible was best for me and others. I’d had both vaccines and had some specific supplements a former colleague, a vascular nephrologist, had sent me from overseas. I even started feeling better on my 4-5th day…then, at 5am on the 17th, my sweet, very smart and VERY insistent Kitty, woke me up, slapping my face & sticking her paw in my mouth. My O2 Sat was down to 77%. My daughter was actually notified by Alexa that I had an emergency, she called EMS and I was admitted until I stabilized. Despite everything I had going against me (I had been discharged the week before on my 3rd round of antibiotics for pneumonia, was still technically in congestive heart failure AND had a very high platelet count); I survived COVID. HOWEVER, I DON’T recommend it. Everything I said previously still counts.
      Vaccines do NOT completely prevent COVID; HOWEVER, what the vaccines DO do, is they interfere with the viruses ability to multiply, lowering your viral load enough, that even with someone at extremely high risk, like myself, it gives our immune system the opportunity to actually fight the virus. Lowering our viral load also lessens the chances that we can spread it to others AND gives the virus a smaller chance of mutating. We have seen MANY mutations since I wrote the above and while Delta has certainly been the most virulent (harmful, it also infects younger people and pregnant women at much higher rates. My daughter loses at least 1 patient under 50 EVERY WEEK in her COVID ICU she works in.); the reason Omicron has been the most concerning is the number of mutations it causes in one virus particle. It, SO FAR, seems more transmissible, BUT less harmful. We won’t know for sure about resistance to current vaccines or immunity for those who’ve had previous infection. The reason it STILL terrifies us is because the more mutations, the more likely to get a highly resistant, much more fatal variant. As I said previously, this is a whole new virus. Yes, we’ve had experience with other coronaviruses; but they have little in common to this new one and we will be studying it for YEARS before the long-term effects are known. My son in law had a stroke during his infection; my dear son didn’t have a stroke until 6 months later..and, the vaccines he took had no effect. The clots were already there hiding. I contracted the virus, despite being extremely cautious..and was very lucky that my cat woke me up that morning. She literally saved my life. Well, her and the vaccines..without which, my body would never have been able to fight the virus. PLEASE GET VACCINATED!!

    Just a quick fact, the best concentrations for alcohol to disinfect is 60-90%. Higher than 90% alcohol is less effective as a disinfectant, you'd need to use it longer and even so is not effective against some germs. The 60-90% is better because it has the right amount of water to enter the cell fast enough to kill the germ, the over 90% alcohol will dehydrate some germs and they'll come back to life later

    also a good thing to know: 99% isopropyl alcohol is great for making solutions like hand sanitizer, but it's actually too high a concentration to be used ALONE as a surface disinfectant because alcohol evaporates so quickly. you need that 30% of water to slow down the evaporation so it can sit on the surface long enough to break down the virus. 70% isopropyl alcohol (final product) is the best concentration for disinfecting surfaces. hit that sweet spot & stay safe everybody :)
    EDIT: also, if you have a secure porch, yard, or fire escape, you can leave your non perishable packages in the sun for a day for a little added insurance. SARS-CoV-2 is not a fan of bright light, heat, or dry conditions. it remains viable the longest in cool, dark, damp places. sunlight alone is NOT a disinfectant though, you should still disinfect things however else you normally do, but leaving it out in the sun can help reduce some amount of the pathogens.

      I'm also going to hijack your comment and remind everyone to *not mix cleaning products!* Especially anything containing bleach and vinegar. Read this story of a woman who needed to be admitted to the hospital after soaking her vegetables in cleaning vinegar and bleach.

      I use 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean my electronics (wiping my phone and laptop keyboard for example) even before the coronavirus started because not only does the alcohol disinfects, but because it's only 30% water it doesn't interfere with the electronics (which hate water).

    One year later with a lot of other studies done and misinformation spread and I have so much respect for this video that is a little out of the channels usual wheelhouse but is, as always, brilliantly researched and informative without scaremongering or chastising. The fact that it holds up through the year of changes is a huge bonus and it's so refreshing and wonderful to see content creators who work so hard and care about well thought out conclusions over clicks. 💛

      HA! And that woman is the one who didn't come down with this mild flu. JOKE'S ON YOU SUCKERS who honestly believe Covid is out to get you. No one in Sweden wears masks, or hides in their homes, or social distances, and our death toll has been same as it's always been. Turn off your mass media, and live your lives.
