Sapkowski doesn't get enough credit for being the creator of geralt and all these amazing stories. I've noticed on social media there are a lot of casuals that have don't even know the books exist. He deserves the royalties from the games, graphic novels, the show, and all the merchandise. I hope he get his due for creating this world so many of us have come to love.
Sapkowski isn't a guy who buys expensive villas, chases after hot models, loves gambling and 200 people parties. He enjoys reading, cooking and fishing. That's it. I think he has enough money for the rest of his life (he's 73). And he will get even more, when new games/films/show seasons will show up.
@@vojtasjedyny he sold the rights to CDPR to make the Witcher games for $9000 and turned down any royalties because he thought video games were stupid and wanted money up front. Then when the Witcher 3 got as popular as it did he got mad about it. Basically screwed himself out of much more money. However the success of the games led to book sales so it’s kinda bittersweet. This fanbase is priceless
Sapkowski's answers put such a big smile on my face, I love it! He's so happy and proud for his "little baby" (the Witcher series).
He was (and probably still is) really salty over his licensing deal with CDPR - but I'm sitting here thinking that if not for CDPR's awesome game adaptations, the size of the existing fanbase would be very different today, and Henry Cavill never would have read the books (he did so after playing Witcher 3 like a madman and falling in love with it).
And, this time around, his licensing deal this time around with Netflix will compensate him extremely well!
deal of CDPR was blown out of proportion. At that time he really needed money for his son treatment, and the lawyer told him to do it because according to polish law he should have received more money.
@@angelikapotree2741 Really interesting about his son - first time I heard about that! It could certainly be a driving force behind wanting a big lump sum upfront. Do we know what was going on with his son? I can only find information about how that lump sum from CDPR was around $10,000 USD, and that he declined royalties. $10,000 vs. potentially millions of dollars with royalties? Ouch. But he couldn't predict the future, and if he needed that amount of money immediately, then he needed it immediately.
He's been quoted in interviews: "I was stupid enough to sell them rights to the whole bunch. They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, 'No, there will be no profit at all - give me all my money right now! The whole amount.' It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn't believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn't."
He clearly regrets his decisions with CDPR. The law in Poland has to do with a licensee (CDPR) earning such a disproportionate amount of money compared to what was paid. And man, was it disproportionate!! Anyways, he (along with the lawyer you mention) later sued CDPR for back royalties to the tune of $16 million USD, and CDPR settled with him for an undisclosed amount earlier this year, 2019.
But at this point, you'd probably agree it's a waste of time for anybody to figure out the "truth" about the CDPR deal. It's not worth looking up on the web or debating. Finding out the little details about the CDPR deal pales in comparison to being grateful that we are getting what will probably be an excellent adaptation to the screen. He most likely won't have to worry about money anymore. In 7 days, you, me, and everybody else here is going to be loving the show. To me, that's what really matters! We'll be celebrating its awesomeness! Cheers!
@@rieyuki His son needed cancer tratment . He died this year. Witcher III come in 2015, Sapkowski only asked for additional money in later part of 2018. It telling

He seems so excited, and was very happy seeing all the stuff on set. If the man himself thinks it’s good, then hell yeah it’s gonna be good
Good to see his novels getting some love, The Witcher books to me where a revelation, everything I liked in literature, in one perfectly crafted package. I loved the games too, but the books are on a whole other level.
True :)
The games drew in a ton of people to read his books, they got him a ton of more readers and could have given him a ton of money but he chose to take a bit of money because he dind believe in videogames and so on. And from what i have seen the games are far more popular then the books. They were more popular games then the books were as books. The reason the witcher games are good is because they were made by people who were excellent at, had soul and found out how to make the game so good.
Without the games the books would have far less attention and so would the writer. Most had not heard of it untill the games came.
Not to mention despite the writer making his own decision in a fair deal and walking away from the games, he recently demanded CD to give him more money because he saw the games were so succsesfull and earned a ton of money. Tough he had signed a fair deal with his will and walked off.
Easily said, no. The witcher games were far more succsesfull games then the witcher books where as books
@@Jow2002 Jesus christ, this thread wasn't about what sold better. He said the books were on another level, probably the storytelling and worldbuilding. All the people here parading their hard-ons for CDPR is truly sickening. The Witcher fantasy is here because of that man not because of CDPR, thanks to CDPR The Witcher is enjoyed by alot more people. Be grateful to both, thank them and stop the squabling about who made the Witcher. Because this guy is the creator, thank him and CDPR.
@@Hayzl1 Sure but thing is without CD the books and show would have faaar less viewers and fans, but nor The writer or book fans seem to mostly admit this. The writer was the base, but the games were the building.
And no I doubt that. The Witcher 3 was at the top in terms of all aspects there is a reason it got so fucking many fans and copies sold. I struggle seeing the books being better when the games were far more successful
There's a big hype surrounding this serie. They better not disappoint us..
They will. I cant believe he gave her of all people the green light for the witcher
The dialogue seems oversimplified and bad, which is what shows do when they want to have the widest audience range possible and don't have very experienced or skilled writers. It looks like typical western cinema casting where everyone has to be attractive and lean, has to show a lot of skin and violence. I'm expecting a show a mile wide and an inch deep. We'll see, though.
Shane Bateman give it a chance man. i understand your point with the dialogue and apealing to a wide audience. But with henry cavill being the lead here i have high hopes that he wont let this show be terrible. At least lets see what it looks like before we just assume it will be terrible
MrSwitchblade327 I’ve heard that early test reactions to the series has been overwhelmingly positive. I’m hyped because Henry Cavil is a huge fan and is a big driving force behind the series. So if he is seeing something he wouldn’t like as a fan, he’ll be on the ground floor to change it.
All comments here "boo hoo... I'm so jealous I because I can't do something like this, so I throw crap to the showrunners..."
He is a great guy and a great writer with amazing knowledge.
He isn't amazing when it comes to trusting people with IP's tho
@@cupcakemcsparklebutt9051 In the end he should be thankful to CD project red
Dziękujemy panie Sapkowski za te postacie, ten świat, te książki. Coś niesamowitego.
We all thank you, Mr Sapkowski, for the characters, the world, the books. It's just incredible.
are you gonna watch the show?
"Absolutely, I'm a patient man."
Have you played the games?
"Not interested, I have better things to do".
Wish he could have bring more credit to the games that made the Witcher so popular. Well, guess I can't blame the guy that brought us the story in the first place. I'm grateful you genius
i think he loved netflix series but hated the game series because of game Devs created new storyline and didnt go through on his storyline. Andrzej probably felt like game Devs didnt like his witcher story(which is not true) but love the universe. He is Great Creator of this universe but he is a little bit arrogant. Videogames made the witcher's fame not the books
@@Wunderschon657 I'm tired of repeating this but his books were already popular before the games, they just weren't known in english speaking countries, but he was basically the most famous fantasy author in Eastern Europe during the 90's and early 2000's, that's literally the reason why CD Project Red decided to adapt his work.
Great to see him that happy even though his son passed away a while ago.
Netflix has been marketing this show like no other in recent memory, I love it!
Andrzej Sapkowski is a genius! Creating such a unique/complex universe and breath-taking short stories/novels is not easy at all.
Thank you to everyone involved in The Witcher series. Books, Games, Shows, etc. It's encouraging to watch people create magic around something that people are already passionate about. The Witcher clearly impacted the folks involved to a point where I felt the end products are masterwork products. I look forward to a new decade with The Witcher.
On behalf of all witcher fans, can someone there at Netflix fire this woman ? You may as well fire her with actual fire
That woman should’ve never been working on the Witcher!!!
She destroyed it and now we’ll never get a Witcher series…
Her Witcher series is dead
A woke mess
He seems super nice. God bless this man. He gave me some of the greatest experiences in life
The show creator interviewing the author - both to whom I will forever be grateful - including CDPR - for bringing The Witcher in 3 very different, but effective mediums. I'm DYING for DEC 20th and a Witcher 4 game!
Read the books people! They’re amazing!!
"You cannot judge the soup by the groceries" Love that line
Oh Lauren sure knows how to butter the man lmfao
Well played Lauren xD
Yea but wait till he sees what she's done with it
He's open about his approach to adaptations: he thinks the effect is the responsibility of the adaptation makers, that's why he gives them liberty. He says if the adaptation turns out badly it's a problem of the adaptation maker.
@sebastian popek yeah he probably knows that as well, but I guess he enjoys this too much to give a fuck lol xD
Come on now, it's not like we wouldn't giggle with joy if someone praised us like that lul
Stop Netflix I can’t with my hype
Lauren Hissrich is the second worst thing to ever happen to a franchise. Kathleen Kennedy is the first. But it's CLOSE.
I really want to know why they changed so much of sapkowski’s work instead of faithfully adapting it
@@backwoodsonthabeat7783 Simple. Hissrich and her cohorts used the Witcher as a vehicle to push ideology. They don't care in the slightest about the actual source material.
@@backwoodsonthabeat7783 ego and ignorance
1:50 - The Dwarf Soldier
Lauren... If you don't like the project, then step down and give it to somebody else.
After the Polish series, you wanted to leave the country and you praise this something, from the perspective of the second season of Netflix witcher, the Polish production is extremely good.
He is a grumpy old man 😂😂😂 I know people like him, they are constanty mad 😂😂
That was simply delightful!!! I’m so grateful you’ve shared this!!! Thank you!!!
I'm loving how Netflix keeps on giving us these little teasers, they're much appreciated! And will keep me sane 'till The Witcher drops :D
So nice to hear him speak after all the hate he got from fans of the games who never read the books, I loved the games, especially the Witcher 3 of course but they are nowhere near as incredible, for me anyway, as the books. The books are absolutely epic and magical, its where everything that was great about the characters from the games was created!
I love his books it might be the best series ive ever read but for me he is still a bitter old man who can accept that the games are a huge part of why his books got so big in the us
All his quotes about the games are taken out of context by a lot of people.
He got so much hate from his own people in Poland. It was hard to watch.
@@nathanb3995 yeah, the only reason he said that gamers are stupid was because some asshole troll told him during a con that he can't write further novels because they would not match the game story
@@nathanb3995 Exactly. Im not a big fan of him as a person, but hell. He is just being sarcastic and media that knew it twisted it just for views and now people hate him cause they actually do not watch his speeches, but just read these stupid articles and he, as an author, deserves respect for creating these amazing books, god dammit! Its truly horrible how no one wants to talk about it and he gets so much slack for nothing basically.
Im PROUD of my lovely country! Poland is the best ❤

Lauren seems really proud of what shes working on. I think she is going to do a great job.
