Phil, in his prime, could sing anything. He uses so many different vocal techniques/styles in his songs, that it is wild, really.
How can you be a metal composer and have only first heard Pantera for the first time one day ago?

its possible with so many metal bands around, ive been listening to metal for almost 20 years and ive still heard only 2 Judas Priest songs EDIT: and as a guitarist id definitely recommend Slaughtered, such a fun song to play🤟

Dimebag was the guitarist and his brother vinnie Paul was the drummer that’s why the guitar and drums synced up so well. They were playing together since they were little boys.
And with dimebag being the greatest heavy metal guitarist to ever exist up their with randy rhoads and Eddie Van Halen it sure helps, they been practicing together since they were kids and it creates perfect harmony, just like Eddie and his brother, we need another guitarist drummer brother duo in modern metal, nothing beats it
One that doesn't get tossed around that much is the studio version of The Art of Shredding, I love that one

THIS was a great starting point even tho most folks start with "Walk"...other good tracks "Cemetery Gates", "Cowboys From Hell", "Floods", "Broken" "5 Minutes Alone" "Domination" "Primal Concrete Sledge" SOOOOO many others...
Their official videos for Cemetery Gates and this song cut off quite a bit off of both those songs. And they’re not just a small section either, they’re significant portions
You should do cemetery gates for sure but the official video has a minute and 35 seconds taken off of the intro and begins at the drop so I'd suggest a lyric video or just the regular studio verson

Yea dude definitely need to do a deep dive, they have 5 albums (besides their glam/power metal days) which influenced so much of all modern metal, you surely need to find a time of the day and just listen to all of it, you can do it within a few hours and I’m sure it will give you new perspectives on composing

To be fair about the odd inflection in Phil's singing, hes from New Orleans and thats pretty much his natural drawl coming through. Kind of shines the light on the imitators that came later using a southern drawl just to sound like Pantera.

People think it’s odd but I really like it, maybe because I’m southern myself but I love how he sounds, especially in Down where you can really hear his New Orleans roots

The studio version is much better than the music video. There's a beautiful outro at the end of the song

Ahh no! One of the best bits has been cut out of this version. Youve gotta make sure to react to a complete album length version of Pantera's tracks.

From the 1st album, listening through each album from start to finish (or one song at a time, but in order). He'll be in for a real twist with them first albums...
Far beyond driven is by far the heaviest album to ever debut at number 1, definately worth a listen
The disparity between the volume of your mic vs the video volume. If I want to also listen while you do then my eardrums get blown. Leaving a like even though I can not watch.

He just need to listen to all 5 albums lol, theirs so many good songs and plenty of them are inspiration for so many modern bands

The alternative metal vocalist yeah thing is influenced mainly by Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam fame. The style is often referred to as a singer being a yaller.

Video version cuts out an awesome scream
Pantera is the direct link between 80s metal and Nu-Metal. They brought a guttural growl in the vocals with an overall laid-back attitude. When they were peaking Grunge was on the downfall. Unfortunate circumstances caused the band to cease just after the new millennium.
Interesting for Pantera still sounds fresh, at times even modern, while Metallica of the same period now sounds more like their predecessors. Which is not a bad thing, it's just a difference.
If you do Cemetery Gates, please don’t do the video. It’s extremely shortened. Do the album version. They really don’t have bad songs. Just different degrees of greatness. I would just start with track 1 of the Cowboys from Hell album and roll through them all!

Dimebag is the greatest metal guitarist ever...Groove Metal is they style and these guys invented it! influenced by thrash and hardcore (punk) among other things...Texas Blues for one...YES influenced Slipknot for sure...and nu metal in general!~!! @@mattblatchley2061 yep and dimes last words ever said was “Van Halen”, as you can see with my name I’m a super fan haha, I know everything about the abbots that’s public, but I’m only 21 so I was only 2 when he died and never got to see him live, if I could go back in time I would go see them live over doing anything else haha

Metal composer is the most fake made up title I've ever heard. I know, technically it's a musical composition, but the fact that you're calling yourself a composer is just hilarious.
Well… that’s what I do. I compose metal. What is fake about that exactly? ‘Metal composer’ gives context as to what I know and how I’m approaching the song and where I’m coming from. It’s not that hard to comprehend.
Dude, so many haters online. I enjoyed the reaction even though this is FAR from the best Pantera track. I'm Broken, Domination live in Moscow, and especially Cemetary Gates Video are some of my favorites. Sub'd
I will say that early in his career Phil Anselmo had a great voice, but I understand your dislike of the nu-metal teeth gritting “hhhrrrrrhh” tone trailing off the lines. The thing about Phil Anselmo is he isfrom New Orleans, Louisiana , which in the native tongue of most English speaking Americans is damned near its own language unto its own , hence the drawl with which his delivery has. They truly were innovators, but as with a new path being forged there undoubtedly always comes the copycats who are pale imitations and they always seem to pick up on the lamest elements of who they are hoping to cash in on stylistically.
I feel you might be blown away by the track Use My Third Arm. Arguably their heaviest track and I can most assuredly see where the spawning of the ever popular Djent of today’s acts. Lyrically I feel it’s rather weak, but it did cater to that inner rage of youth that seems to dispossess one of more rational faculties, but that’s metal in a nutshell for so many kids & sadly some adults who never got the memo to let that shit slide.
