Germany´s first RC kit Graupner Electra 1955 restoration

- The Graupner Electra is one of the first RC models available in Germany.
Only the rudder was controlled via two heated vacuum tubes and a working relay with a switching star. It was powered by a Taifun Tornado diesel engine with 2.5 cc.
The Graupner material package with printed wooden parts and very extensive accessories
was available from 1955 to 1960 in the specialized trade.
Last year I was very lucky to acquire an almost completed original Electra with almost
all parts and original box.
Only the construction of the vertical stabilizer had not yet been started and some parts of the tailplane were not installed.
It is remarkable how well the model has survived the last few decades in its storage location.
Now it was time to finish building the plane so that I could add it to my small collection.
During the restoration, I made a tew flights with the model, to determine the EDW, the dihedral
of the wings and the center of gravity.
The expected oscillation of the model due to the strong dihedral was confirmed.
As the model is also to be flown for filming purposes, this unfortunately had to be reduced.

Tolle Arbeit, vor allem die Nachfertigung der fehlenden Spanten. Ist doch was anderes als die heutigen Klick und fertig Flieger! Ich muss alles zugeben , als Junge bin ich damals am "Kleinen Uhu " von Graupner verzweifelt, der wurde auch nie fertig !😢
Das war bei mir auch so. Das ist ganz normal. Ohne die Unterstützung meines Vaters hätte ich den kleinen Uhu auch nicht bauen können. Auch im Modellbau fallen Meister nicht gerade so vom Himmel😊. Vielen Dank fürs melden 🙏👋
den hab ich grad noch so hingekriegt, ebenso den Amigo II, aber ich als Weltmeister brauchte ja keine Helling o.ä., von daher eingebauter Kurvenflug... Aber das hier: riecht förmlich den Balsastaub..hust..hust..😉..lecker! Und tolle Arbeit, Kollege! (und Neid. will auch so einen tollen Maschinenpark..)👍

This was great. That Graupner is one year younger than me! I grew up building wooden model airplanes and am also familiar with the vacuum tube electronics of the era.
It was the same for me. My father introduced me to this wonderful hobby as a child. But I'm over 10 years younger and the tube technology was before my time. I might want to rebuild the Electra receiver with the original tubes but as a dummy. Thank you for getting in touch🙏👋

I'm very pleased that you like it so much. A flight video will follow, but with the electric motor. The diesel engine will be fitted when the model goes into the display case. It is too risky to fly the model with the diesel engine because it is so old and so rare. The model is an absolute milestone in model aviation 🙏👋

@@Flug0815 Found some parts, cool motor mount, some gear. My 951 Porsches alternator burnt out so it's off to the shop to be replaced. 😕 gotta work extra hours for it..Christmas will be a good time to find a used kit. I like how you restore these beauty's. 🤠👍

Unfassbar..dieses tolle handwerkliche Können. Chapeau. Im Jahre 1958 hatte mein Cousin mit der Electra mal begonnen. Irgendwie ist sie dann doch nicht geflogen so richtig. Motor war Taifun Tornado...er war ölig und laut..aber uns hats gefallen. Ach ja..die Finger waren meist blutig..damals wars...und schön wars. Herzlichst Peter 77😢😢😢😢😢😢❤

I have ever played Graupner TAXi plane kit and Graupner helicoptor twin jet 212 kit. When 1975 year ago. Good flying.
The Taxi 1 has very good-natured flight characteristics. I really appreciate it for that. Today, the Twin Jet is an absolute classic among model helicopters. Fortunately, we still have some for sale. Many thanks to you for reporting 🙏👋
I built the 212 kit for a friend, but never saw it fully completed as he suddenly decided to sell it prior to final painting and tuning for flight. Hope the last owner actually finished it. It was a farce as I never charged for all the hours of work as I thought it was for my friend, not to get me to build it to make more money. Live and learn.

Delightful, from 1955....I see Germany also has nostalgic tendancies....We are all the same. The purists would want the original diesel in the model....Is that engine a Taipan?....?...🤔😳😏😏😀🇬🇧
@@EnglishTurbines The engine is a Taifun Tornado 2.47 cc. The motor is currently still defective. The counter piston is firm. The wood no longer has its full strength in some places due to storage. If you were to fly it with a diesel, you would be taking a bigger risk. You have to take that into account. You don't want to damage a 70-year-old original. Thank you for getting in touch🙏👋

Wunderbar, so ähnlich hab ich mit meinem alten Amateur gemacht. Ich bin zwar ein überzeugter Diesel-Fan, aber die damit unvermeidliche Ölsauerei am ganzen Modell vermisse ich tatsächlich nicht.😂
Wir haben heute auf dem Graupnertreffen in Neuwied versucht den Diesel der Elektra zum laufen zu bringen. Hat aber leider nicht geklappt, weil der obere Kolben fest ist. Mal schauen wie es weiter geht? Vielen Dank fürs melden🙏😊👋.

Original nur mit Seitenruder und Dieselmotor? Inzwischen habe ich Leute kennengelernt die durchaus bestrebt sind ihre Electra wenigstens mit einem Diesel zu fliegen🙏👋.
@@Flug0815 Mit Diesel Motor , originaler RC Anlage und dem blechtank meine ich.
Wird halt fast nicht zu finden sein und eventuell störanfällig?
@@maxmoritz5065 Eine große Betriebssicherheit erreicht man mit dem Diesel nicht. Man muss auch bedenken, dass das Holz 70 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat und an ein paar Stellen durch die Lagerung nicht mehr die volle Festigkeit aufweisen.

Wunderschön gemacht. Einzig die Lackierung mit Sprühdosen ist nicht ganz passend: Damals hätten wir einen weichen, hochwertigen Lackierpinsel verwendet 😏
Aber sehr schönes Ergebnis, und fantastisch nochmal zu sehen was für einen unfassbaren Aufwand die frühen Modellflieger getrieben haben um ein "einfaches" Flugmodell zu bauen.
Ich bin irgenwann dazu gekommen ein "Großmodell" zu bauen in das ich mich reinsetzen kann (und darf!), das war wieder der Modellbau der alten Schule...
Das mit dem Lackierpinsel sehe ich im Prinzip auch so. Ich werde das eventuell bei meinen folgenden Restaurationen mit einfließen lassen. Vielleicht sogar schon bei meinem nächsten Projekt 😊. Cool restoration. I do have my doubts at this 16:30 rudder linkage setup, it seems like prone to fail
Your concerns are absolutely justified. I had them too. You should never do this with normal plastic hinges. However, the rudder is absolutely free of play and robust thanks to the upper and lower metal mountings. So you can do it like this. The pivot point is exactly on the axle. Vielen Dank, freut mich! Es wurde ein Acryl Lack von der Fa. MG Prime genommen. Ich empfehle auch die passende Grundierung der selben Firma dazu. Ist alles auf EBay erhältlich. Die Farbtöne stehen in der Videobeschreibung.
Hi, I know you are using Sig tissue to cover the solid balsa areas, you mentioned you brush on stretch varnish over the tissue. Are you referring to heat shrink varnish?
This is a translation problem. It is not a heat shrink varnish. The German word is „Spannlack“ (Tension varnish?)
I made a balsa wood plane, it had a 4-foot wing span, it went together great and when I covered it with tissue and doped it the tissue tightened up too much and warped the wings, what caused that ? I followed the instructions to the letter, but for some reason the tissue shrank far too much, wasn't in a hot room etc,
Today, you can no longer understand why that happened with the silk. You would have more security with Koverall. It doesn't shrink much and is then shrunk further with heat.
Wurde bei der Restauration die originale V-Form der Flächen beibehalten? Ich baue grade eine Electra nach dem original Plan und die V-Form scheint mir sehr stark...

Heißes Thema! Ich hatte während der Restauration einen Testflug mit der originalen V-Form gemacht. Das Modell pendelt leider sehr stark bei Seitenruderausschlägen. Ich habe dann die V-Form reduziert🙏👋

Hallo Flug 0815 , eine erstaunliche Arbeit ; kleine Nachfrage von mir - ein paar Schritte sind mir nicht klar : 1) wie haben sie die Scharniere in den Schlitzen ( 12:33 - Höhenruder ) verklebt ? Ich kenne das Verfahren das mit Weissleim zu machen , das verklebt den Stift nicht . 2) Rumpfbespannung mit Japanpapier ? Aufbrigung mit Treppen und Parkettlack ? 3 ) Bespannung Höhenruder , Seitenruder , Flächen mit Dacron - Gewebe ? Voranstrich mit Klebelack 2- 3 mal ? Verbinden den Gewebes mit dem Holz mit Aceton ? 4). Verklebung der Zeichnungskopie mit dem Balsaholz - Sperrholz - Pritt oder UHU Klebestift , das Papier lässt sich gut abziehen . 5) Mir ist aufgefallen dass sie den Sekundenkleber aus den 5 gramm mini tuben verwenden . Ist das auf dauer besser oder preisgünstiger ? Ich verwende Styro sekundenkleber und normalen sekundenkleber immer aus den 10 ml dosierflaschen , die ich im Kühlschrank lagere. Grüsse - Gerhard
Hallo Gerhard, Sekundenkleber in Tuben gibt es im 1 Euro Geschäft im 4er Pack. Die kleinen Tuben verkleben nicht und sind besser zu handhaben. Ob es preisgünstiger ist kann ich nicht sagen. Glaube ich aber eher nicht.
Die Scharniere habe ich mit Epoxydharz verklebt. Auf den beweglichen Teil kann man vorher Weissleim aufbringen zum Schutz. Das Holz wurde vorher komplett mit leicht verdünntem Porenfüller (2x)behandelt. Das Japanpapier beim Rumpf wurde mit leicht verdünntem Spannlack aufgebraucht. Die Koverall Bespannseide wurde auch 50 Prozent verdünntem Spannlack aufgebracht und dann noch 4 mal mit gleichem Mischverhältnis gestrichen. An den Kanten wurde zusätzlich Heisssiegelkleber benutzt. Die Seide wird ja dann mit dem Heissluftfön geschrumpft. Dann wurde alles mit der Spraydose grundiert usw. VG Mathias🙏👋
@@Flug0815 Hallo Mathias, das mit den Scharnieren ist interessant , wie auch das verkleben von papier und nylongewebe mit spannlack. das mit dem Sekundenkleber werde ich mal testen . Habe mehrere halbvolle 10 ml acrylcyanatkleber verloren durch das komplette zukleben der Gewindespitze. So gesehen sind die 3 gramm tuben auf dauer billiger. Allerdings gibt es die 3 gramm variante nicht für depron / epp . Bin am überlegen einen F3a Flieger - spannweite 1510 mm komplett aus Holz , allerdings mit gelaserten teilen aufzubauen . Habe einen vielleicht brauchbaren DXF Plan gefunden . Grüsse Gerhard
Tolle Restauration bis zu dem Abschnitt als der Elektro Motor eingebaut wird. Sehr schade. Mit dem Verbrenner wäre er 100% Original gewesen.
100 Prozent Original wäre er mit der Standard 10 oder 20, Röhren, Schaltstern usw.; Also, der Diesel kommt wieder rein, das mit dem Elektromotor ist eine Adapter Lösung. Vielleicht nehme ich ihn sogar in Betrieb. Momentan läuft er nicht, weil der Gegenkolben fest ist🙏👋.
