  • Welcome to Ways Out Back!
    Follow along for a full in depth TOUR of my 6x10 cargo trailer conversion. My goal is to build this so I can pull it anywhere my Ford Ranger can go. I wanted a trailer that could go off grid and I can use to explore the back roads. It has a 12v Fridge, 460Ah of Battery, Diesel heater, Shower, 2 Burner stove, on demand hot water, electric brakes, and lots more. I highly recommend building one of these for yourself!!

      Check out Tinkers'adventure on his FJ! The solar panel would be a great replacement if your's goes out, it's a 400watt one, and then Eco's Solar review, its inside a FJ that is a Alternator charger inverter, which would be a nice addition for your trailer too. Just a thought for maybe upgrades for your trailer i think it would give you some more juice to stay out camping longer.

    I've come to the conclusion that a cargo trailer build is a much better route to go on a limited budget vs an old used RV camper. They just don't seem to hold up and to me would end up being an endless money and time pit. This is a great video and you've given me a great many ideas to use on my build. Thank you for showing all the intricate details and showing how everything works so efficiently. Also, I was planning on a larger trailer, but this vid has shown me how a 6 x 10 would be just fine for me. I'm in Fl, but wish to visit the northern US and Canada so the cold weather info is greatly appreciated. Thank you from Pensacola.

      Glad it helped! I loved my little trailer we have put 1000s of km on that unit!
      I completely agree the cargo trailer is a solid little unit that you can really work with. Also you can buy one used for a couple thousand bucks all in you can do this quite cheap. Since this one I added a bit of room on the back and sides. Here’s a link to version 2.

      Very good observations! During Covid, my hubby & I stayed on our property in Coloroda by the Wyoming boarder. Everything was a chore & thank God my hubby knew what to do & how or it would have been freezing. It got down to 11 degrees & a diesel heater kept us warn however the slide-out let cold air in. I think u would be much better off financially & much more comfortable. You'd probably be better off on gas too! Best wishes! Take it easy!. 😊

    I've been wanting to buy and convert a cargo trailer into a camper for about 3 years now, but have hesitated because of the concern over lack of usable space, if a bathroom was to be installed. I'd only use mine for perhaps a 3-4 day weekend, so now I can plan on using the space that the shower in your build takes up, to make an enclosed bathroom. I thoroughly enjoyed your detailed explanation of how and why you built your trailer the way you did. I too have a Chinese diesel heater and love it. I burn kerosene to minimize soot build up. I have run my heater for three straight years on kerosene with no maintenance, so far. The installation manuals say that the fuel pump should be mounted cocked at about a 30 degree angle to reduce risk of an air bubble forming in the fuel line which can cause troubles. I could not tell from your video if your fuel pump is mounted at an angle. If not, easy tweak to make the adjustment. Finally, your craftsmanship and creativity are impressive!

      @@waysoutback I'll check it out, thanks. Bought a lightweight, galvanised al-ko chassis to cut down to around 6x10, fancy a 2' bath with shower that doubles as closet, light stainless steel sink, light stainless wood stove with heat exchanger for externally mounted, insulated water tank. Small back up propane, and want to eventually try making a 'quiet' small, single cylinder diesel generator to run on old oils for power and more heat scavenging, to compliment the solar and wood power in winter / in case of emergency or sheer convenience.
      There's a fair bit of room underneath that can be used cleverly too, so may give that more thought, this build concept is going ultra lightweight foam and fibreglass, an easily removable, modular pod style of system that can be used anywhere. That's the idea basis, although permanent chassis is very acceptable when all bells and whistles are in play!
      Have been collecting useful things like stackable 20 litre water containers recently, anything that is free, cheap, in good condition, and looks like it has a potential usage! You know how it is, trying to keep things light, practical, useful, functional, simple yet technical, and clever use of available space! I believe it's a resolvable paradox. 🤓✌️ Positive Nerd Power! Have a great day, fella.

    As a fellow 6x10 owner, I really liked what you did. You did a lot more intricate work on it that I'm inclined to, but those are some great ideas. A couple of the downsides to our trailer is that it didn't come with a side door, and because I still teach scuba diving most of the trailer space is necessarily taken up with our compressor, tanks and student gear. I've got a video tour of ours on my channel. Since there's no room for us to have benches or a bed, I used the idea from Gonagin' CZcams channel to create two removable pipe berths. I was actually surprised how comfortably I slept in it...even with two of our dachshunds sharing it with me! I'd like to replace our big cooler with a 12v compressor refrigerator, but we don't yet have battery capacity to handle that (100ah hybrid gel is what we have). Eventually would like to bump up to LiFePO4.

    This was very helpful and enjoyable to watch. As we too are in Ontario, and have had many camping trailers in time. We are now looking to build something similar as yours.
    One question comes to mind, the diesel heater im sure gives lots of heat, did u not think of a propane heater, or would the lack of wall real estate be a stumbling block.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  Před 2 lety +3

      Sure I’ll give you my two cents…..A few things to keep in mind.
      If your doing propane RV heater then no problem but if it’s a non vent you will get a lot of condensation buildup inside…. like a buddy heater. I’d highly discourage that kind of heater…. I ran one for awhile and the condensation was dripping off the walls, it was terrible.
      Another thing I kept in mind…. I had propane give me problems below-20C seems to freeze at times… I knew it could drop extremely cold so I had that in the back of my mind.
      Also in my research the diesel heater draws less current. If your doing campgrounds with hook ups then I’d definitely just use a RV propane heater… if your doing a bunch of off grid camping with spotty solar… then I think a diesel heater is the way to go. Hope that helps
      They also make very reliable quality diesel heaters… I think they are made by wabasco… but I have no experience with these.

    • @brmelectric
      @brmelectric Před 2 lety +3

      @@waysoutback yes I agree. The Wabasco are top notch, but obviously very expensive compared to the Ebay Chinese heaters. And yes the condensation is not a good thing, had an Aliner for ten yrs or so and even with a vented propane Atwood furnace, condensation was awful. Anyway. Great stuff. Thankyou for your timely response. I have subscribed to your channel.

      The diesel I think does a great job drying things out… I know I’ve heard of some horror stories with them but I believe a good percentage of the problems are due to a poor install. Nice, cool just what you need. I couldn't do this every day but a trip here and there would be cool.

      It’s definitely a bit tight😁
      but for us it was this or nothing, unfortunately my little truck just can’t pull much more weight.

    I'm not much for cold weather AT ALL, if I went camping in the winter I would probably park in a spot, get into the camper, stay there for a few days NEVER go outside and then leave when my supplies ran out😂. I'd just look out the window at the scenery, watch tv, do a little cooking, maybe some reading and that's it. I was getting cold every time I saw the snow outside 😂. I was like, hell no!😂. This is a awesome build however. Some great ideas here!!!

      lol. We learnt early on that there are a few things that make a huge difference in being able to enjoy it. In fact we ended up making some changes to this camper. You can see that in this video.

    Compact design. Can always use residual heat from appliances to help prevent freezing. Very nice!

    Very nice, I like that you put windows in it. I have a 6×12 I'm considering making into a camper. I can see it would be a lot of work to make

      I think if your a bit experienced using tools it’s actually not that bad. Depending on how complicated you go and your finishes. I’d say it’s a great winter project to be ready for camping by spring. Maybe 3 months of weekends and evenings and then your ready to roll.

    Very logical in layout. Great job on it. I wanted to build my own camper trailer but when I got my Scamp. I was under a time and location crunch relocated for job and selling house 9 hours away.

      Right on I had a older fibreglass surf side trailer before we really liked it but I was worried pulling it through the bush. Happy camping!

      I'm slightly conflicted about them, trying to blend security and stealth with practicality. As always, a fun challenge!
