  • HEY GIRL HEY!
    You can listen to everyone give you a quick fix recipe... or you can start to master your own hair and never struggle again.
    Someone left a comment on one of my videos saying that no matter what I do, my hair grows and I must have unicorn hair. The truth is, I do not have unicorn hair - I struggled for a long time... until I decided to take a simplistic approach that is.
    No amount of money or product will give you long, beautiful hair unless you are consistent with your routine, and GENTLY take care of your hair. That's the "secret".
    Any questions? Live them in the comments.
    Looking for routines?
    Oils/butters: • The BEST Natural Hair ...
    No oils/butters: • Styling My New Hair Cu...
    As you can see, you can use w.e method you like, as long as you are gentle and consistent.

      I would love to agree with you but it’s not easy for long 4C hair. Even the basic takes more than 2 hours for me. I workout and I have it wash it often and I have no time deal with it when I have a full time job. I have no time to do twist out when I have a full time job and active lifestyle. It’s easy for CZcamsr with no full time job to say it’s easy.

      @maupointnandi1760 Před 8 měsíci +6

      @@jreteeksjreteeks8868 yes I completely understand what you’re trying to say but try to change your mentality when it comes to natural hair because I have long 4c hair,I am not a CZcamsr and I do have a full-time job but I always find time for personal care which includes my hair and I never wash my hair when I’m in a rush or tired, when I don’t feel like it but I have found a style that works out for me and that helps my hair go for at least a week or two without putting my hands in it. 😉

      @jreteeksjreteeks8868 Před 8 měsíci +5

      @@maupointnandi1760 the styles that I see people do that work for them is cornrows and then hiding their hair under a wig. I can’t have a wig on top of my head. I need my hair out and to be manageable. I get that it’s easy for some people. But it’s not for me and I have tried. Silk press is the only thing I can manage, and I can’t go to salon every week to get that done, so I rock a bun because that is the easiest. My best time with my hair was during the COVID lockdown because I did not even care.

    Girl. Your advice is real and relatable. It is how I have approached my hair for years... My lifestyle needs and my self care. I like retwisting my hair. I don't need prepoo. I don't like gel. I'm Ok with frizz. I love my shrinkage. I have no problem trimming. I don't make my hair try to do what doesn't like. Etc etc etc. My hair care is actually quite simple.

    I absolutely agree Jenn that we are the problem. As a stylist, I tell my clients this all theee time. Got to establish a routine and exercise patience when doing your hair. However, Jenn, I must disagree with you a bit on the products. Although I don't support having and using a bunch of random products , I do encourage doing your research and encouraging using high-quality natural ingredients for your hair. We now know that most commercial lines have tons of harsh and toxic ingredients, and it causes more issues for our hair and bodies. Everything in moderation. Love you, girl.❤

    Perfect message and timing. Thank you for keeping it real. I am donating products to friends this week because I got caught up purchasing products to achieve a certain look that always failed. What I learned. I don't like the way wash and gos look on me. I must hydrate with water, seal with a moisturizer, and twist my hair in big sections at least every other day due to the dry climate I live in and because my hair is salt and pepper. I may co-wash or not mid week depending on if my hair feels weighed down with product or is dry. Weekly shampooing, conditioning, and doing something with my hair is a must. Keeping it simple going forward. 😊😊

    Those within the natural hair community spend too much time trying to make their hair as unnatural as possible. With all the manipulation through stretching, blow drying, silk pressing, braids and twists, etc - the hair is no longer what it's supposed to be...free and unaltered. It took me a while to realize that what the natural hair community calls a "wash and go" is not a wash and go at all. We need to stop (low key ) being afraid and ashamed of our natural coily hair and stop masking it with so called "protective styling." We're just creating our own struggles 😢

    I have also jumped on every bandwagon that passed my way. Am 55 and been natural for probably the last 20+ years. I have also been doing wash and go's for 40 years between straight styling. I also learned along the way that a lot of what I picked up has a scientific explanation. I didn't know my hair has probably been low porosity all my life. I used to think something was wrong with me cos I picked up silicone serum didn't make my hair shine. So cgm explained a lot of what my hair was going through. It doesn't work for me in its entirety. Yes, I need to skip silicones. But i can use sulfate shampoo cos I dilute it anyways. My hair doesn't need to loc. That's too much for my hairm. Bentonite /Rassoul clay does nothing for me. I was flogging so many dead horses. So now I have decided to make notes when I changed anything. The whole hardass way of going about natural hair isn't all its made out to be and it's hardly beneficial. It was a good start but no longer needed. We need to cleanse, condition, and maintain. Every now and then I need a little something -something. And my hair does not conform to any one person's videos on YT. I take a little from all the YTers and my hair is good. It's really not complicated.... Well I wish someone had told me this 20 years ago. We really don't need to follow everything to the letter

    Jenn, girl, you are on to something! Just go on and create the ebook that goes into details on each of the topics that you discussed here based on your 15 years of trial and error. This level of detail would be worth about $15 to $20 in an ebook. For newbies giving up perms, locs, silk presses, this would be a goldmine since you are considered a long time trusted advisor.
    Btw, I tried UFD with Mos Def on top, cut my styling and drying time in half with amazing results. Thanks for the idea of using a mousse! Having hydrated hair, free of heavy oils and butters, makes products that didn't work before, work now!! 😊

  • @CoilyCode
    @CoilyCode Před 8 měsíci +5

    That’s what made natural hair difficult (for me) was the trial and error. 😅 I know for me, it seemed like I Struggled to just figure out the RIGHT routine. But don’t give up and this can be a joyful adventure! Give yourself an opportunity to EXPLORE your hair. And don’t be married to immediate results. Be patient and let a tested experiment take the time it needs. And keep the experiment free from variables (like you mentioned in the bit about troubleshooting).
    I figured it out and I’m sticking with it because it’s the one experiment that worked. Growing hair longer than I’ve ever had in my short life lol

    Great video Sis. I've been natural since the 80's. Wash, condition, and clipping your ends; would be the 3 most important things. (But no need to straighten your hair to do it.) Another really important thing is products. With my own eyes, I saw how products can change the type of hair you have. My sister has similar natural hair as mine but she uses a whole other regimen that keeps her hair dry and tangled. And my hair is totally different from when I was using commercial products formulated with a lot of synthetic chemicals. DIY is the best, but using as few synthetics as possible can make a big different on your hair texture.

    It does help to understand what your porosity is. Since I am low porosity learning that squeezing the hair like a sponge helps it to absorb moisture which made a big difference in my growth process. Porosity knowledge matters when choosing the most effective products that will support maximum protection and absorption again. BUT IT don't have to be expensive. But consistency and quality matters, natural over toxin filled could effect your whole body not just your hair. Our hair is an antenna and we must learn it's function and purpose beyond just the aesthetics. Anyway. I appreciate your focusing on simplicity none the less. Once you breakdown what matters most to you it gets easier. For me it's health, and care and function not just vanity. The vanity part is that I love to where it down too much and that is the part that limits my growth but it's still mid back so can't complain too much. Loving the journey and my hair. Hope you love your's too. 😂

    Jenn Jenn🙌🏾💞😘another great video! As you were talking I thought it would be a good idea to break down these challenges. For example, trouble shooting your hair-if it’s dry try this or that or what do you do to achieve a hair routine (day/night). Not sure if you’ve done these or not but just a thought 💭😘

    Completely agree, once I stopped using all these different oils and greases, just kept it simple to 5 products and got my quarterly trims my hair really started to thrive!!! Cosmetologists in spaces like Black Girl Curls also helped a ton. Definitely check them out if you’re struggling!

    It took me sometime but I finally got to this point with my hair that I know what works. When I was practicing the AD method and experienced hygral fatigue, I immediately knew my hair felt different, was behaving differently, and did a protein treatment.
    Safe to say. I dont need any methods. I just need to clean, condition, and style. Your video is amazing 🤩!!!! The information is 💯 legit!

    Jenn, we have been around for a long time!!! I'm sure you still follow all of the original CZcams girlies! Those were the good old days! African Export started her channel 15 years ago! Taren 916, Iknowlee, Hey Fran Hey, Mynaturalsiatahs, kimmaytube, Naptural 85, Himay10nence, Mahoganycurls, Beautifulbrownbabydoll, coilyheadchick just to name a few! All started their channel almost 15 years ago. We followed their lead and enjoyed the ride! Like you mentioned in your video the community is overly saturated now with so much information. I big chopped in 2011 and 2015. My hair has been through changes over the years mainly because I wanted to be grown and wear knotless and other tight hairstyles. Honey, I learned my lesson!!! Back to the basics! Thanks for your content!!! I appreciate your knowledge!

      It’s a “quick” twistout meaning I used a mousse and the dyson to dry the twists and took them out. They were still slightly damp but as you see, did their thang 🥰

    I love my natural hair. It is very true - get 2 to 3 routines and stick with them. WNG's when it makes sense; protective styles, if your life requires it, wash your hair once a week, if that works for you. Find the products that works, and don't chase anymore (talking to myself on that last one. 🤣🤣). It really is not that difficult.

    I see some comments are going negative regarding if this advice is applicable to long hair. I find this to be a teaching moment based on my hair journey and experiences.
    Long hair fits under lifestyle options that Jenn mentioned in her video. Just because you can grow it long does not mean it fits your current lifestyle. There are pros and cons to everything including hair.
    Short hair requires cutting and shaping the hair at least every 3-4 months depending on the hairstyle, however it is the easy length to maintain because you can shampoo, condition, and style daily. To me this is the truest version of a wash and go. Your hair products last forever, however the haircuts can be expensive.
    Long hair requires more of everything. More shampoo, more conditioner, more styling products, more drying time, more shedding, more focus on the ends of your hair, more hair tools, and more time needed to devote to hairstyles (roller sets, blowouts, flat ironing, etc.) besides a basic bun or ponytail. I had waist length locs in my late 30's. While it only require refreshing my scalp as needed, shampooing, retwisting my roots monthly with one product (my preference) and pulling them back in a loose ponytail it took 2-3 days to dry, they were heavy and I developed headaches due to the weight of the locks. Once I reached my waist length goal I realized I was bored with my hair due to the lack of versatility and I was tired of the headaches. I did a big chop.
    In between length can be the best of both worlds, however in my opinion the hardest length to style. I am at bra strap length. This is the phase where I have experimented the most in my hair journey with styling products and hair styles. Taking that leap of faith that the latest hairstyle, methods or products is going to match the expectations of the youtuber hair that popped up on my screening device has failed me more than once. It has also been very costly.
    My learning outcomes -All hair no matter if it is long, short, in between, straight, curly, or bald requires some level of work or effort. You get to decide what that looks like for you. You can over complicated it or simplify it.
    This was a good reminder and I believe the purpose of this video. Look at your hair routine, your lifestyle and ask yourself is this working for you. If it is great. If not make some adjustments. I am choosing to simplify.

    I was growing my hair, then I got three bald spots after braids and a high pony. So I have had it short since. Tell me why when I finally decide to grow it I found another one? 😭 Yerree im so sad. And it is huugeee
    Anyways your hair is the main character, combined with your face *chefs kiss*

    We just need to go back to the beginning. We have to remember that the perm etc came after natural hair. What was your mom and grandparents doing before you started doing it yourself.

    I totally agree with the video but I still think products matter. Products that don't clean, moisturize and detangle your hair at a good level, turn your wash session into a very long nightmare. Then, you can't be consistent because washing your hair is worse than fighting demons 🤣
