    The first chapter is a free, short game made by a single dude with some helpers on the side without a proper budget. The fact that it's so relatively polished and charming regardless speaks volumes of the potential the game has, and it absolutely needs people providing constructive critique so the full game can get as close to its full potential as possible.

    • @Cronosonic
      @Cronosonic Před 10 dny +10

      @@Sealtuber It's a free game that's basically a proof of concept made in functionally less than a year with relatively simple gameplay. It's not meant to be comparable to a fully paid game, either. The mechanics work as intended, the visuals are relatively cohesive and decent despite the low budget, it's well-written, and the game is not actively frustrating to play nor designed poorly or notably buggy in any way. It sounds more like you have unreasonably high standards if you're still calling it "bad".

  • @Momo_Minomo
    @Momo_Minomo Před 15 dny +487

    My main issue with the way some people have criticized the game (especially that "higher standard" comment) is that they're reviewing the game like they paid full price for it. They're complaining about reused assets and some bare sets/skyboxes when this was a essentially a student indie project on a shoestring budget they had no intention of charging for to act as a proof of concept so they could get funding to start their career in game development. Chapter 1 is a demo that went above and beyond what anyone has a right to expect from a free demo.
    We should absolutely give constructive feedback but we should all save the nitpicking and set building criticisms for when chapter 2 comes out and we all pay for it. Even then, though, let's keep price point in mind. I'm not going to expect a $20 or $40 dollar game to live up to AAA $70 game standards.

    • @floofzykitty5072
      @floofzykitty5072 Před 13 dny +40

      It's extremely shortsighted to judge a game without context. Going back to the first FNAF game even now, you can see it's very rough looking and it hasn't even been that long. If you compared it to the more modern FNAF games with bigger budgets you can see how primitive it really is, but it fulfilled its purpose.

    • @bowlofboyo
      @bowlofboyo Před 10 dny +1

      yall are taking the criticism personally on behalf of someone else, nothing said should be taken as a jab at Mason or his ability, every project requires constructive criticism and that's the reason mascot horror games often start with a short, free first chapter, so they can use the criticism to modify the game before locking it in. Indigo park is great for what it is but why should the developer's personal life and constraints affect strictly professional comments and feedback?

    • @comicsans3421
      @comicsans3421 Před 10 dny +5

      @@bowlofboyo read comments before you reply to them, the comment literally said constructive criticism is fine, they just said not to nitpick a game for small things when the game is free. the key word here is nitpick, a nitpick is not constructive criticism. a nitpick is just taking a small possibly mistake or something else not at all significant and going "ugh the sky is a slightly different shade of blue" that does not tell the developer anything at all that would help them make the game better.

    • @Momo_Minomo
      @Momo_Minomo Před 10 dny +5

      @@bowlofboyo I absolutely support giving constructive criticism. No one can learn and improve if they don't know what they did wrong. It's also not about sticking up for the developer and their personal life, it's about being ACTUALLY objective (the way a reviewer is supposed to be) and taking all factors into account, including price, dev team, and resources. If chapter 1 had been 30 dollars my opinion on it would be much harsher because it changes the parameters with which I'm measuring its value.
      My issue is to those people calling this a cash grab even though it's free, saying they hold it to a higher standard than a commercial product from larger studios, saying it's a waste of time or its trash because the skybox didn't have more detail and they reused the plushie collectables to flesh out the world. Those reviews are unfair and not taking into account the resources the dev had to make the project or its price. It's also unfair to slam it for being too short considering it's not a standalone game, it's just a really good demo.

    • @bowlofboyo
      @bowlofboyo Před 7 dny +2

      @@Momo_Minomo if people hadn't highlighted criticism of for example the skybox even slightly, then the game dev could give it the same amount of improvement as all other features of the game which could be fine if they are the outliars but subjective factors become more important once you can gather a consensus. Otherwise the game could be absolutely outstanding in some fields while just average in others and if the majority of the demographic is in it for those finer details but they just aren't there it could all be a waste so yes, while the skybox could have just been mentioned and dismissed it's an important part of research to not leave anything out entirely

    Only watched the first 6 minutes, but want to get a thought out. I played the game on a live stream and the bit where Theft King points out the camera is too low (and joking that we are short) I made the sort of headcanon or theory that the the reason for that is, we are looking from the perspective of a camera and not the player characters' eyes. My arguments for that are the fact its a a game set in the modern day where bodycams exist of the highest quality, and not analgue videotape camcorders of the pre-2000's. Our character is also suggested to have a history of urban exploring prior to the events of Indigo Park. So it stands to reason they may be recording thier adventures, like urban explorers tend to do. Also on the flashlight thing, I also tested this on stream and the player character IS holding the torch correctly and comfortably.

      This is an interesting theory. Yep, they do UrbEx so it might be a camera.
      Or we might be accepting that not everyone is six feet tall. I mean they're taller than a child so that's all I really cared about since it's established they aren't a child. So... they're just not six feet tall. Alright. Most people who claim they're six feet lie about that anyway. Give us some shorter protags.

I understand that Uniquegeese had a limited budget so I'm sure they'll definitely make it better. The main point I'm referencing is when the path behind us right before Rambley's Railway fell apart. That felt just thrown in and artificially a way to make the protagonist in universe stuck in the park. That's just my opinion but I genuinely love the game and I'm so excited to see where it goes... Indigo Park as it is now is a proof of concept. The gameplay isn't meant to be anything special, you're just going through a linear series of rooms with some puzzles sprinkled in, but the puzzles aren't the point. It's to show the world that UniqueGeese is setting up here, the characters and some worldbuilding. And it's likely that some parts of the game's theme will be changed - you can tell that there are bits and pieces of experimentation, like Rambley's constantly-shifting movement style (done by I think six different animators) or that portal-esque arm the monitor in the gift shop is on, that might be changed in the future. And for sure a lot of sounds, models and animations are likely placeholders, because again this isn't meant to wow you with revolutionary gameplay or impressive software, it's just meant to get you into the story that it wants to tell. That's why it's important to look at it like that, rather than like a completed project by a funded and staffed studio. And it _is_ good at what it's supposed to do.

Though I suspect she might return, because of the arcade game - in that game, you can go along the normal route where Mollie is turned evil and then killed, or you can go along a secret second route, one which leads to a second Mollie, caged in a secret cave, and it crashes when you near her in the same way it does when you defeat the boss version. It might mean to imply that there's a second Mollie, or maybe a program with her personality like Rambley, or something similar. • @alittlebitofeverythingyt7394

    Oh my god, someone else who heard the hiding meaning of the ending song? I always perceived it as Mason directly talking to us through Rambley and asking if we enjoyed the game from the first time I listened the song:
    “And lots of happy feedback ensures I get to exist”: if the game doesn’t do well, Rambley literally won’t continue to exist as there won’t be any more chapters.
    “Will I see you again?”: will you come back and play chapter two?
    “Did your experience convince you to tell a friend about us?”: will you suggest this game to other people?
    There’s others, but they’re the ones I noticed straight away. I’m so glad I’m not the only one 😅

    Dusky’s video is way more constructive! It feels very much like she understands this game isn’t a full product but an introduction, she brings up points like missing sounds and lack of physics to ask for more attention to details within the world you interact with, she doesn’t just go “game bad.” She actually values it, understands that constructive criticism can help fix a lot of these smaller issues to create a bigger picture that is more satisfying for everyone. The problem with theft’s video is that he clearly holds no respect towards the game, ideas or even developers. The only genuine gripe I have with the game is very specifically the Flesh Animals’ eye designs being black and white pupils. I am… so very tired of this fnaf trope, its so overused and looking back it wasn’t even scary; even in the first fnaf game it was more offputting when their pupils shifted into black eyes than the eye design itself being scary, and then the design was more “cool” than spooky. I feel like the fnaf fangame JR’s is a really good example of not using this “haunted mascot” eye trope. Both Flesh Animals designs are pretty disappointing in my opinion, something that can be forgiven due to this project’s scope, but the eyes to me is just an error I can’t look past :((

    I honestly dislike the sentiment that people can't critize something because they're either low skilled or low budget. You can acknowledge a fault to be unavoidable while still criticizing it; choosing to withhold that only because "they can't control it" doesn't allow the artist to know what they can do in the future for efficiently, and they may be blindsided that because no one complains about it, it's fine to keep in. What UniqueGeese had to deal with are absolutely valid reasons and excuses for why the game looks the way it does, but we shouldn't (respectfully and nicely) hold back on why the game isn't as good as it truly can be. Critisim is useless if it isn't proper.
    Also, I see a lot people get on Theft King for thinking they had bad voice acting, I completely agreed with him that there was shitty voice acting there until I saw videos of people dunking on him pointing out it was for a different game. Granted, he's so much in the maschot horror space you'd think he'd understand it, but like, just saying... not everyone gets a reference.

      A. I'm surprised that people are taking that away from my video - that was not the point nor was it what I was arguing.
      B. The reason Theft King's criticism of the DSaF reference is 'invalid' is because it's an Easter Egg, not part of the main gameplay at all. It's a sidequest (collectables). Part of a joke, plenty of franchises do it. Also, I think people clown on Theft King at all is because he claims he's the 'king' of FNAF, yet doesn't get the DSaF reference.

      A: I understand your video. I said this comment not because of the video but because of the top comments here carrying this sentiment (and probably this whole comment section really). And as stated before, I dislike the fact it's thrown around for the reasons stated.
      B: Well for one, I'd argue side quests are still worth critizing because they still play a big part of the game; the only difference between it and the main game is what the player should focus on. Not only that, but there's legitimate things you can learn about this game due to these side quests, so I'd say it's valid to critique on how they're presented. And following up on that, secondly, you can't tell what's an easter egg if you don't know what it's referring to in the first place. With that easter egg surrounded by real facts of the game's world, chances are someone is going to believe "oh this is actually what the game is giving me" if they don't know the other franchise. That is why I at least fell for it to begin with.
      Now, even with that being said I don't disagree with *why* people are clowning on him. I'm pretty sure we both get here it's silly and kinda digging yourself a grave to be boastful about something and then proceeding to show how little you know about it. But at the same time, I feel like it's just a little goofy that so many people ride on that point the same way people ride on him for not running when Mollie chased him, even though one can argue he was primed not to due to the previous time a big-bad confronted him a whole cutscene occurred- solely for the reason you actually presented in your video. If it was anyone else, people would probably give the benefit of the doubt. But because that review was just clickbait and a badly presented video, everyone disregards that idea. I understand that it's normal it will happen, especially based on his track record; you tend to do the opposite and that's again, understandable. But still, I like to preach examining everyone the same way regardless of bias.

    Imma be honest, I understand the want to defend a game you like and cover its flaws with reasons (talking about what you said about daggz and dusky's criticisms), but I do feel that's a diservice to both the game developer and the fandom of that game
    aknowledging a piece of media's shortcomings, whether glaring or minor, is overall a good thing, not necessarily because the developers need to go back and fix it, but it because they can keep it in mind from then on and improve, this rings true regardless of budget, time constraints, etc.
    yes, the game was made in fairly stressful conditions, but using that to deflect criticism doesn't lead to improvement, it's better to take criticism and analyse it to see what could have been done better so as to know in the future, yes, even destructive criticism can, in fact, hold a nugget of truth, which can shape future decisions in the future

    • @MilesL.auto-train4013
      @MilesL.auto-train4013  Před 9 dny

      No idea where people are getting that I said it should be used as a deflection, I said that [context] should be taken into account when analyzing the entire project - and shouldn't be used for said 'destructive' criticism (i.e. what TheftKing was doing). Which, yeah, is true to an extent.
      The main point of me bringing this specific point up was that UG _is_ planning to redo Chapter 1, as stated, when he doesn't have his prior limitations and acknowledges the faults. So while the criticisms of the flaws of Indigo Park are completely valid, it should be kept in mind it's more what I've seen people describe a 'demo' (which I think is too strong a word but sentiment is there) and the game is far from complete. I don't agree with people treating/labeling it as if it's a completed product pushed onto the Walmart game isle shelves.
      That is, of course, not to take away the criticisms listed. I even stated as such, as they do need to be addressed and fixed. And I have constantly encouraged doing so as such.

      Fun fact: the "amusement park in disrepair" supertrope (which is a subset of the cursed circus and carnival of evil supertropes) has been around since about 1995, I remember a Give Yourself Goosebumps with an abandoned amusement park where the mascots were monsters. Also Silent Hill 3 spent a while with a haunted amusement park where in the Otherworld the carousel horses come to life. And of course Banjo-Tooie's Witchyworld is a regulation-non-compliant dilapidated park staffed by monsters and omnicidal anthro people, including an evil blow-up dinosaur.
      The sets of tropes used are actually a lot older than most people who aren't gamebook or 90s kids are aware of.
      It's still perfectly fine to go "doesn't sound like my cuppa" though, if it doesn't click, don't force it, that's the easiest way to burn out and end up hating something you were just indifferent about before.
      Honestly, the only truly fresh spin on a venerable storytelling setting (been around since at LEAST 1985 if not older) is that Rambley's an AI, and even then that's just borrowing from sci-fi and I could point at a lot of pre-2010 games that used an AI companion that may or may not be friendly if I looked. (Sci-fi wasn't exactly my genre.)
      You see generic recent mascot horror, I see much older tropes being used and in a relatively competent way for a first chapter demo (really it's more of a prologue).
      And also a lot of stock assets being used pretty well but that's what not having a whole graphics team to work with does, you have to pick art assets that are consistent for the vibe you wanted and it's going to come with issues like "that feels too big and empty".

      @BlaizeTheDragon Před 13 dny +6

      I think it's generally an issue with mascot horror as a whole. By default, these kinds of characters look "uncanny" and that's just a fact (literally every animatronic/mascot character is like this. Rambley would be too if he wasn't a stylised animation on a sign) but aside from that, no amount of dress up can make them look actually scary. FNAF is the best example. You're not scared of the character, you're scared of the "BOO!" they accompany and the build up to that moment.

    I think fans sometimes overstep when a creator is so available. Yeah, the game needs feedback because it’s a game in development, but sometimes I think even well meaning criticism is a little entitled. Arguably creating an atmosphere where the dev gets thousands of the same complaints via a video from a reviewer is creating a lot of unneeded feedback the dev will have to slog through. It’s a free demo of an unfinished game made for fun by a small team. It deserves to lack a little polish. Advice like offering to write the rest of the game or changing something that is uncertain is a story beat is maybe a little too soon.

You can go very far on heart and soul alone, after all, many of the genre's defining game only had that for them (FNAF being the most obvious exemple).

    Biases can sometimes affect my judgement, and that doesn't always allow me to be as objective as possible with my own criticisms. Is why I wasn't left with any, when I posted my short (and disregarded) review of Indigo Park on Steam.

    I’d say the biggest problem with theft king’s review is it’s half an indictment of uniquegeese’s character.
    ie “When I first saw Theft King’s review pop into my feed I thought ‘ah, yet another creator leeching off of Indigo Park’s recent success.’ And in many ways I was right. This may be the worst review of all time due to how uninspired it is. To illustrate I didn’t hear him make one point I hadn’t seen in some other video first. Theft King truly lives up to his title. Cashing in on the hard work of Uniquegeese and other creators alike.”

    The hate to theft king is absolutely reason A with a bit of b, he said some bad stuff of indigo and people really hated that. "How could he said that my chapter linear horror game of a park for children isn't original" like there's 2 other games out there with the same premise, it's absolutely fair to asume that indigo is not original at all.
    And there's something I really don't like about indigo park. It doesn't feel like a park, all it's like this one linear ride instead of the park where you choose what you want at the moment. Maybe indigo park would work better with a security breach kind of approach

    this first chapter is far from perfect and the devloper knows that, but for him its more of an opening to learn and put the tone while still delivering something and he made it pretty much all alone, with money he made with his kickstarter he will start (actually paying people) and so get help which means chapter two can only be better!

    Even I’ve didn’t played Indigo Park, regardless I’ve watch endlessly of few videos. About the reactions, most were positive, (some) were just disliked; if I didn’t get this correctly; Theft King, his claims and response calling this Game was a Ripoff-Banban as a cash-in or cash-grabs. While my thoughts about him; I’ve ignored his opinion. It may be felt hurtful and disapproval comments. But UniqueGeese also known his “Mason” my opinion is simple to say: He barely not his fault and he’s trying to fixed the game. But in all seriousness; the game is still a lovable. What’s funny about that Rambley who has same similarities; he loves trains because of his own railroad attraction. Although he felt Reputational damaged after the park was closed and forgotten for decades, with him and Lloyd’s relationship is unknowingly feud, basically his friendship to Mollie and likely Finley, and a spotlight villain is Salem. / What’s even more impressive; that Lloyd’s impression voice was sounded like Dr. Robotnik, while Finley is acted like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, doesn’t matter if it’s bad or good in this game, they are lots of people with their own uniques and fan-made games were morals; but it’s timeless and naturally.
    Note:*
    And of course (you) as iconic to mentioned about capitalism; which is mercy to agree that this is deathly impossible-hard earning job; and THIS is why you should ignored ‘Woke’ and their political agenda and Sh*t; That’s explains why the “American” dream is such a joke to me. Neither that way; I’ve said it my fair statement. But I’d hope to enjoy the game (even it’s free on Steam?); but yeah. That’s all I’ve got to heard or say this.
