In my greenhouse, I often go in and run me hands lightly over the seedlings. This also helps strengthen the stems. And there’s nothing wrong with “petting your plants”!😊
An idea would be put wheels on your soil bin, for ease of use.
I use mini blind strips to make my labels. Bought a used mini blind for $5 at my local Restore Store and cut them with a pair of scissors. They work great and are recyclable. Love seeing your seedlings ❤
Yes, I have been using mini blind strips for about 3 years now. Still have 80% of the blinds left!
Fantastic idea!
Me too!
I’ve been trying to come up with an idea!! Terrific idea!! Thanks for sharing!!
I do the same
My lettuce just sprouted, yay, gardening season 2023 has begun!!
What a dramatic change in that space! Looks great
How do you cook Christmas dinner .... start in the grow room in Jan !!!
Babies! Yay! Congrats!
Love the grow room and all the projects your husband does. So nice to have a handy guy around the house!
I grow pea shoots from regular shop bought dried peas, that way they are super cheap and grow sooo easily. I love them on salad.
Use small chain with your hooks to lower and raise easily. That's what we use to do when we were growing indoors.
I really like that you share and acknowledge people's suggestions that you find helpful.
You guys have taught me a lot!
Thought on the plastic wall would be to actually cut a little bit off at seam so not a tight seam; then tape across when not heated so expanded then seal and place wood strip over to keep in place. This would allow for expansion and shrinking and possibly prevent stress cracking.
How exciting for you to have a bright clean grow room! For your size garden, all those shelves are wonderful to hold all your seedlings. And with your freeze dryer set up it's sure to be a great preservation season as well. Cute piglets and delicious mac and cheese. I'm with your dad: more cheese please!
Grow room shelf💡
A shelf on a hinges with chain on each end
You can let it down when needed to work
Another option for labels is old window blinds. When I bought my house they left the window blinds. Many of them had been bent by cats climbing through to sun themselves in the windows plus I have always hated dusting blinds.
They can usually be cut with scissors. I would cut the ends off where the cords went through and then the large middle section could be cut into 3 pieces. I then cut one end as a triangle to create the spiked end that goes into the dirt. Permanent marker lasts for years so I can reuse for years. I have more than a lifetime supply so I envision that one day when my children are inventorying my estate they will find my box of garden labels to deal with.😦😂
So if you or someone you know is throwing out any window shades, go ahead and volunteer to take them off their hands.
I adhere to the same decadence school of thought as your father.if you don't use cream cheese it can indeed come out clumpy. Also, dry mustard is a very under utilized spice.
One of my favorite cheeses besides cheddar is smoked Gouda. It only takes a small amount to enhance it. But I will use a combination of 3-5 different cheeses.
I had to stop the video so I remember to suggest to you. I use a chain to hang my lights, attach to the light and bring to the top of the shelf above and use a knitting needle - slid through the chain - for the height. Its very easy to adjust. You could use a chop stick or even a stick! I am then able to have one side higher than the other. I hope that make sense. No hooks - a chain from the light, put through the shelf above and held by a knitting needle or whatever you have to use.
I use an empty tray flipped upside down, under my other trays to move them closer to the lights. So far it seems to be my best option for flexibility.
Grow room looks great. Looking forward to following your progress. Loving the piglets.
Oh my goodness the grease pencil on the plastic strips is BRILLIANT! I’ve tried all sorts of things to label seedlings and nothing really seems to work once it got wet. I’m totally stealing this idea this year! Thank you to whoever suggested it! ❤
Ps: I like the pressurized sprayer idea BUT personally if I had a sink right there I’d be adding a hose hook up to the tap (you can get the adaptor that goes on where the aerator goes) and getting a small hose so I could use the running water as needed. But that’s just me.
I was a painter, and the truth is concrete house blocks are meant to breath to stay healthy! The general practice when building houses or buildings like Walmart has been to paint both sides. This seal them so they dry out and lose some integrity. Its not a game changer and dosen't have a bearing on their use .But in reality it is cosmetic over function. We had a almost 700 pound poulan sow we let run free on 1200 acres with 20 or other hogs, with ponds, and gators.I wold ride in the back of a pickup and tell sooooooo ,and could call then in ,and then throw some cubes down for them to eat. This allowed us to maintains a little control over them. That big sow I could ride some. Thanks Chelsea.
For your shelf issue, you could hang a tabletop on the wall with hinges. Underneath you attach a fold out table support. Dan can probably make one of those without too much trouble. That way, the size would be just right for your space and needs, but won't always be in the way.
I think this is a great idea!
You had a calming effect on Dinah ❤
Our family's secret ingredient to mac n cheese is adding a small amount (a teaspoon per 9 by 11 pan) of Worcestershire sauce to the cheese sauce and also a medium sprinkle of bread crumbs over the top before sprinkling the cheese on top.
Very cool! If I might suggest, just in case no one has mentioned it yet - for a table, what about a collapsible table: the side against the wall is hinged, and the legs are also hinged (either straight down to the floor, or supports on an angle hinged to the table top or wall as well? You can have it up when working, and flip it back down to take up just a few inches when not in use.
About raising and lowering the lights, if you don't want to use s hooks on a chain, you might be interested in raising the trays instead. My trays start out on a few books or upside-down tupperware containers, or shoe boxes which are between them and the shelf.
Thanks so much for all the information and hard work you put into the videos! Love those little piggies!!
Great idea on the fold-down table. Very nice idea for the space.
You are so engaging. When you were talking about the window trim in the grow room and said something about the door trim ..."behind you" I actually glanced over my shoulder. That was my face palm
That made me smile!
I love your grow room!! So happy for you. Just think, fresh lettuce and tomatoes in the winter. Home grown at that!! The piglet are adorable and that mac n chz looked delicious 😋🤤
It cheers me up so much seeing those little greens coming up. Thank you so much for sharing them right from the start. Oh dear about the freeze dryer but thank goodness new one there. Mac and cheese looks so yum. hugs and luv
I actually put boxes (like flat boxes from Costco) upside down under my lights and as they grow I then just remove the boxes. Made it easier on me than moving the lights. With your racks I bet you could stack a few pieces of 2x4 to raise up your seeds.
Beautiful! Use to hang venal siding. He just needs to put a rubber washer behind the screw head and not tighten it to tight just snug. Let the material do its thing and it will all be good for your wall
What about putting something underneath the plant containers to make them reach the lights better?
I still have a kid that drinks a gallon of milk a week. Last year I used the plastic jug, cut up to make labels. 😋
What a cute apron! Thank you for sharing all you do. I was in my garden yesterday and noticed my garlic is coming up. I’m in zone 8b so lots warmer than where you are. 😊
Your grow room looks great. Well done Dan. And Chelsea too. The plants growing are so nice to see.
For decades, I hang my shop lights using cheap link chains from the hardware store and ‘s’ hooks. Super easy to raise and lower along the length of your chain. Last year I bought a new grow light that came with a frame for my kitchen counter and it has a built in pulley type system that many time fell on my seedlings when it didn’t hold. For me, the cheap chains and s hooks work better. 😊
P.S. the link for the Amazon lights has the price at $129.99 usd 😟
I have an enormous stash of S hooks from tiny to plant hanging size & use them for everything! You can add & remove them as needed.
I love that grow room 🤣
💐💙🙏🇺🇲
Heat up the room hotter than needed so it expands. Take out the screws so it can move. Put screws back in (same hole new stud location) then let it cool. Basically have it in place in pretension.
Thank you so much.
What a great tip about the fan blowing on them to add strength to their stems. Thank you.
If you use smart controlled devices, I use the Kasa plugs to control my grow lights. Easy to set timers and adjust them without needing to actually touch anything after plugging in the lights. It's been amazing!
With that much space (especially at this time of year when you're not growing as many starts) you can set one row of the lights very low (1 inch) above the trays for germination, then move the trays down to the next levels of lights hanging a little higher as the seedlings grow taller. Your countertop can be hinged so it can be stored up against the wall when nor in use.
That’s a really great idea!
I love your grow room! Fantastic job!
For those that do not have space for a grow room, they sell tents for growing too.
I love seeing the green stuff growing too!
Another great video!! Thanks for showing momma pig birthing. When I was a little girl I shared with a new neighbor how piglets were born and the mother asked me to leave their house... Lol
Oh, wow! That must have been embarrassing and somewhat traumatic.
You are like a warm hug. I love your videos. I learn so much. I love the piglets!!💙💙
That’s the nicest compliment.❤️
And a sunshiny day!
We use old vinyl window blinds and cut them down to make name stakes! And they're reusable too!
There is an expansion joint that you can do that takes that movement into account.
I’ve used not only yogurt containers cut up for plant labels but cottage cheese containers and lids. It all works and feels good not to waste the plastic. Holds up well outside as well! I used shop lights from Walmart and they come with S hooks to adjust height. I’ve seen these ar Lowes as well.
Just like a floating floor, space is left around the edges for expansion & contraction. Expanding the screw holes will act the same way & will be your best bet! Depending on how much it expands, it might help to shave off 2 edges of each board.
I love your videos. It was wonderful seeing a piglet being born. Mac and cheese look delicious too. Grow room making such good progress. Looking forward to your next video.
Plastic wall looks like Lexan. Exciting year ahead!
I just put lumber (2x4) or the boxes that the lights came in with under the trays to get them closer to the light
For your grow room shelving, you may want to install triangular corner shelving. You'll get much more surface space!
The grow room is amazing!!! I wish we were handy like you and Dan. lol - Congrats on all the new subscribers. Your hard work is paying off!
Good Thursday morning Little Mountain Ranch. and Happy New Year. I'm glad to hear things are going well with the grow room and Dinah's piglets have arrived and are safely esconsed on your homestead. By the way that homemade Mac 'n Cheese looks absolutely delicious. Tell your Dad thanks for the recipe. 😊😉
I used dog chain and s hooks to raise and lower lights.
Scratch the board up (sand) so the silicone has something to grab.
You can use old venation blindes to make labels also. I use those all the time. i love them.
When you talked about extending the lighting closer to the plants, Drapery hooks came to mind, yeah I have a weird mind. They could be used to chain them, unfortunately, they are metal but then I went to your light link and saw the "cable ties" supplied. They make these zip ties (aka cable ties) in different lengths and could easily be used to chain them to the desired height if needed. Anyway, I love your channel, I grow microgreens for personal use, and living in a desert isn't really conducive to growing crops outside in 110-degree Fahrenheit weather in the summer. I get excited about planting every year though. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
I bought the same brand grow lights and they came with an “adjustable rope” for the grow light. I looked that up on Amazon and they sell these separately. They attach to what you already have and work great!
This is similar to my mac and cheese recipe. I use rigatoni for those big holes to catch the cheese sauce, and use cream cheese, velveeta cuz its super creamy, cheddar and sometimes if I have it I add a can of cheese soup by Campbell's. When I'm feeling especially extra I top with crushed cheezit's crackers :) Decadent is the right word!
Your grow room looks amazing!
Been missing y’all
Thanks for info about the puck board. Certainly would not have known that. I use s hooks and small link chain on my amazon lights so I can make small adjustments.
I use old mini blinds, cut up for markers.
Thanks for sharing your grow room with us. I’m in zone 5 and am just starting to think about what my seed starting set up will look like this year. Every year it gets a little bigger and better. It helps me get through the last few months of dreary weather.
I use/cut up the double pack of cutting boards from dollartree for plant markers. You get quite a bit, I believe 70ish.
Possible use screws they use for putting outdoor maintenance free siding on homes...they are specifically designed for not causing waves and ripples during heat/cold expansion/retraction. You still need to not pound them in too tightly so product can move. This was explained to me by our siding contractor last summer when we had our house newly resided....so I'm hoping this may be a solution for you.
Your grow room looks amazing plus plants coming up wonderful. The piglets are so cute. Can't wait to see what you're going to do first with the freeze dryer. Thank you for sharing
Your video made me think of my dad's Mac and cheese, if I happen to be going to the outlet grocery store he would ask me to bring him cheese and I mean he wanted any and all kinds of cheese. I've never been a fan of Mac and cheese but I would love to pick up cheese for him one more time...he passed 25 years ago. My grandchildren never had chance to meet him I may just have to introduce them to his type of Mac and cheese.
looks great & so functional
Everything looks great!!! So glad to see the piglets!!! ❤️
Thanks for another great video🎉 All the best in 2023 to you and yours😊
S hooks with chains work very well for me. Get extras cuz you can drop them.
It looks to me like you could use the puc board as a dry erase boards. Not sure if it’s possible but wouldn’t that be handy and helpful! Cheers, Doc
Actually, that could be super helpful to keep track of planting dates.
Great seed sprouting area! Watching you make mac and cheese inspires me with a wonderful dinner option for today😎 The piglets are adorable!
As I am reading this it’s snowing in Chicago! I am thinking garden…. I make Mac and cheese the same way! I love Swiss cheese fondue!
Princess auto has thingies that I use for lights. They slide up and down easily.
Great visit today - thanks. I adore baby pigs and yours are too cute.
I use little lightweight chain on nails raise and lower my grow lights
Could you use small link chain and something like a carabiner to adjust the lights?
That macaroni and cheese looks really good!
Those sprouts were amazing! I have a south facing window that is calling for a jar of them! Great tip!
I love your videos! Thanks for the content!❤
Just a suggestion: For a work surface maybe consider a hinged counter attached to the wall which can fold down when not needed? Your sprout room is fantastic! BTW, look for lumen output on your fixtures to determine overall even light distribution from fixture to fixture also the Kelvin rating (IE: 4000k) to manage uniformity.
Great idea, thanks!
I’ve used mini blind slats cut up for garden markers for many years (one used blind makes hundreds of markers). Also, you can put something under your grow trays to raise them closer to your grow lights. Great vlog; thanks for sharing all the info!
Yes, I have too. I found some in someone’s trash, so free! I find a pencil to be one of the best markers for them.
@@cynthiafisher9907 I would be careful using blinds, as some of them that are made in foreign countries create cancer- causing dust as they break down.
Be careful because they could have lead or other harmful things in them since they are not food grade. So many common household items have lead and other contaminants in them that could affect you if you use them in your garden. It’s not something you would know right off the bat and would need blood tests, but it’s a caution one should keep in mind.
Your grow room looks great you really going to be in one of your happy place ☺️
Grow room looks bright & beautiful!!
nice setup....i do similar but in my sunroom so combo of lights and natural light
To fix your seals cracking in your grow room walls may I suggest looking into a product called "Flex Seal".
Growing up, my mother would always add in corn to Kraft Dinner. I love it this way. She claimed it was a way to get us to eat out veggies. I still do it when I am eating Kraft dinner as a meal and not just a side. Very tasty, highly recommended. Sorry to hear about your Harvest Right problems. I've seen other CZcamsrs complain about having to be their own repair technicians when it comes to Harvest Right. And that's too bad. Fingers crossed the new one works better.
Congrats! on the grow room and the pigs!
Your grow room is amazing!!! My son uses a small closet….
Piglets are adorable 🥰
Can’t wait to see what you use your freeze dryer for. I would like to get one but that’s way in the future because of the cost! I want to get back into canning and need to save up for the electric pressure canner….
But I have a list of things I would freeze dry !!!!
So excited to see what you use yours for !!!
You are very inspirational!
Thank you
I hope you and your family have happy , healthy New Year.
Thank you Chelsea!
I use little boxes to raise my trays so don't have to lower the lights
oooo my goodness, cuteness overload, pigs are my fave animal xxx
Nice grow room. 25 years of starting plants, one thing that's critical is higher humidity. The heater will dry things out, it might be good to put a decent size humidifier. It's tightrope act between mold and air that's too dry. Looks like you are using fluorescents, lots of people go for the LED for the less energy use, but the fluos kick off heat too, which is good be cause things do best at 80-85F, even the spring stuff. You can't give them enough light being that it will always be less than the sun. Use rainwater when I can, bottled if I need to. You gave me some good ideas for a better setup, especially the fan for stiffening stems.
Been doing soil sprouts and microgreens. Love 'em.
They are LEDs, but still do offer a bit of heat, and yes, the dry air can mean I'm having to water all the time! A humidifier is a good idea.
Thank you for the video, my sister passed on your info to me. I just got the lights and plan on setting them up tomorrow. God bless you and your family.
Glad it was helpful!
I love smoked Mac n cheese. Just make your favorite Mac n cheese then put it on the grill and smoke until warmed through and cheese is melted and bubbly.
YUM!
That grow room looks realy amazing, that was a lot of great work you guys (especially Dan) did.
If you are still thinking of maybe adding a countertop or some kind of table for planting/working on the other wall, maybe something that folds down would also work. Like a countertop attached to the wall on hinges, you fold it up/down for more room of movement when not in use, but if you want to plant or really need more counter, up/down it goes, supported by some removable/foldable legs. Maybe :)
Still love to see you starting seeds and getting fresh green foods. I was a bit shocked about the prices of your fresh lettuce in another vid.
Been looking so forward to this!!! GREAT job Dan 👏👏I've learned so much..on a much smaller scale for me but great tips.. Blessings ❤️
