Cracking your old Sentry Safe (without destroying it)

- A friend of me lost the combination to his safe and asked me to open it. I like a challenge so I gave it a try, with success: an open safe and a retrieved combination. This video describes my approach to open the Sentry Safe by John D. Brush & CO Inc. Rochester, New York U.S.A.
If you lost the combination and you want to get it open again, this video might be the solution to your problem. Thanks to the great comments I recieved I now assume the normal dialing sequence is left-right-left (counterclockwise-clockwise-counterclockwise). In the video I start with right (right-left-right). That works too if you want to crack the code. However if you already have one or more numbers, I recommend you start with left as the first turn (3x), then right (first until 'click'', then to the number, then left to the number. Don't overshooot the numbers; if you do, restart at first turn left (3x), etc. Good luck!
PS: i changed the current combination of this specific safe, so the combination in the video is not valid anymore.

Wow! I absolutely did not think this would work because my Sentry was a newer model (1250), but it took me about 10 minutes to find the gates and the third gate, and about 15 minutes to try the combinations. I only had to try about 25 combinations and Bingo! Safe opened. THANKS!

Thanks for this detailed video. It was interesting to watch someone who isn't "an expert" in combination lock manipulation to solve this through reason. I'm new to these locks, but I pick pin tumbler locks as a hobby.

I have had a model 1330 I have been meaning to try to crack for a few months now. Using this method I identified a gate that was wider than the others (6 vs 3-4) and put it as my third gate, I then used the other numbers in the method you described and sat down to push through the 112 or so combinations. Lucky me I opened it with the fifth combination!

Thank you Frank. I had to do some searching to find out how to open my dad's old safe. The combination was correct, but clearing the lock for zero was the problem.
In these older models one must clear the lock from 0 going to the left (counter clockwise) 3 FULL times, on the fourth a person should go straight to their first number.
Next, they should go to right 1 FULL turn passing the first number and going to their second.
Finally, they should turn the dial left again to the third number.
The trick is in the clearing the lock to zero to start over. Newer models go opposite of this combination. Also the gears inside should be greased 1 time a year. It says with a graphite penetrating oil or light household oil. The plate is held on by one screw so easy to get to.
I hope this helps someone else. Finding the answer was a pain.

I tried it and worked 1st time! We had the combination but we couldn't get it to open. I can't thank you enough for your clear instructions! ❤
Thank you. We hadn't used the safe in some time. Hubby had a memory of a range of three numbers that he said made a math equation when I continued to query him and I played with the dial.
As it turns out those three number ranges were standing out, along with a few others.
But as he finally given me enough clues I used those numbers as a careful range to dial to that I remembered dial locks use.
Clear right 3 times, left to the number, to the right passing the second number once and then left to the last number.
Yet I had to turn to the right to have it pop open.
Just like the directions said on the combination card that was inside.
I began around 2330 and popped it open around 0100.

We bought an opened used safe without combination, and then it was accidentally closed. What a dissapointment!

Hi Frank. I am so happy to try your technique. I’m a bit confused but I’m sure i can do it even if it takes time. I have the same model that was my parents and they don’t remember the combination. When I was younger I got a bike lock the 2nd try but that was just luck. I have been interested in opening locks since then. I will let you know how it works out for me.
Great video! I cracked an old sentry safe for a friend of mine the same way, with a very clear last number (much larger gate) and a tell for the second number (louder click). I can also verify that the first two numbers were located at the false gates, although my friends old safe had a left right left combination at these numbers(counter clockwise, clockwise, counter clockwise for those new to cracking and mystified by the left and right nomenclature like I was when starting). Also verified as you noted in an earlier comment that it could open right left right with offset 6 numbers for the second and third numbers.
Unfortunately I had to tell my friend the safe was empty. (Or was it? He'll never know. Heh-heh.) Thanks again for the video! Good stuff.

Thanks for the great comment! You just removed my last doubt about my assumption on the starting direction of dialing the combination. I now assume the original is left-right-left which makes sense as most of the other models and brands start left. The only reason I started right (right-left-right) was another video of a simular mechanism which showed this sequence. The fun thing is that it works both ways, although the numbers will be different. I will add a remark to the description of the video to help out others. Thanks a lot and all the best to you! Frank

Hey Frank great video. My safe is the exact model as yours. Unfortunately, the false gates did not give me the first number but the third number was obvious as you said. From the false gates I got 98 39 and 23 but when I finally cracked it (using a different method) the actual numbers were 95 41 22. I went through 144 combinations and (I later discovered) the 95 was too far out for it to work (the other two were close enough for alignment).
However using your video I could see that by removing the sentry cover plate and the dial that I could drill a 1/8in hole, in just the right spot (in front of the lever nose), to allow an 1/8in wire in and align the three gates as the wire dropped in place between the gates. Could not have done it without your video, Thanks

Really appreciate the video, so concise and to the point. I’m working with the same model sentry safe and was pretty confident with my identification of the third gate, though now I am having my doubts… just wondering what kind of lever pressure you applied in order to determine the third gate. Of course when I ease up on the lever it widens all of my readings but perhaps this is creating inaccurate numbers…

Thanks for your compliments and your question.
The pressure I applied on the handle was very light. When you find a gate you can push a bit more, because there is some space (depth) in the gate. Although while finding the edges of the gate by turning the wheel, there is hardly any, or no force on the handle. Just keeping it in the position. The gate edges ranging a bit wider should not be a problem; just take the middle of the range for the assumed gate middle.

We bought a safe at a yard sale years ago without the combination. I have tried a few times to open it. I think it is a big assumption that gates 1 and 2 will fall in line with a false gate on 3.
My assumption is the opposite: the numbers don't align. And gate 3 is not false. Did you watch the video? I hope you get it open.

If it's open call sentry with model number and serial number ( inside safe)and for $30 the will give you the combination....
If you have it open, all you have to do is take the cover off of the lock and you can see when the gates line up.. so there's no guessing. Just watch a video on how to do this, there are 100's of them.
Hello Frank and thanks for making this video! I have a Sentry v330 that needs cracking and this video is the most helpful that I've found by far. I still don't quite understand how you got your 12 potential numbers from positions 1 (22-26) and 2 (14-17). Would you mind clarifying how you identified those 12 numbers? On my safe, I've identified the three "latch" number ranges but am not sure how to proceed from here. Thanks again!

I found twelve potential numbers, one of them being the 3rd wheel number. I did that by 'scanning' the full rotation of the dial with very light pressure on the handle. Every time I ran into bump, I tried to find the related (false) gate edges, just like with examples 1 and 2. With my safe I could identify 12 of those gates, each with the 2 edges, and in between the edges allowing some movement, like 1(edge 22-move-edge 26).
So my advice would be to scan the full rotation, note down all 'bumps', try to identify the false gates in the middle those edges. What might help is that the numbers are evenly spaced, so even if you have found less, you could derive the rest of the numbers, or check the uncertain ones. 360°/12=30° or if the dial runs from 0-100 the spacing between the 12 numbers is 100/12=8.33.

If you still have this safe. Reach up in the top left of your safe (or just look up there)-- you will feel a couple of tracts: that black tray in the bottom of your safe is supposed to slide in those tracts and hang from the ceiling like a drawer. I have the same safe as you.
Thanks. I have almost the same safe. I however, KNOW the combo...yet cannot get it to open! It’s been stuck shut almost 30 years now. Your video however has given me renewed hope. I thought the handle was broke. I now realize that I must not be picking up the right “wheels”.
Based on my known combo...I intend to try it with your method to verify the numbers are indeed the numbers. You see I say I KNOW the combo like I am confident. Yet it has been so long that I’m wondering if I am actually remembering wrong. Or simply not starting in the right direction. (I swear my sentry started LEFT first. I also remember having to spin 4, 3, 2, 1 times .). It seems that may not be as important (?). Anyway... I am having some renewed optimism here so again, THANK YOU.
Thanks Sandi! If you have a newer model the times to spin in each direction can vary from the model featured in this video. The more modern versions have a decoupled 3rd wheel and what I have seen on CZcams they all start with turning left (counterclockwise) first. By the way, I am not 100% sure about the turning direction for this model, you can decode (crack the code) it starting left too, although the numbers will be different from the demo. I understand your struggle, even if you know the combination, it requires correct and accurate turning. And if your known code doesn't work, you could go for the shown decoding (crack the code) strategy. About the number of times to spin... for the first turn it doesn't matter if it's more than 3x, for the second and third turn the number of turns do matter a lot. If your safe has the same mechanism follow this video (try same procedure starting counterclockwise) . If your safe is a newer model try to find the manual or similar video for the normal opening sequence. Hope it works out for you. Good luck!

you can start from the left or the right on the sentry... the last number will be the same but the first two will be different depending on the direction
Thanks so much. I am working on a similar sentry safe. I was wondering if you discover why you got a second click that clued you into the second number. I may have missed it in the video. While looking at the mechanism were you able to reproduce that situation?
With trying out all remaining combinations (3rd wheel on one value and varying 2nd and 1st number), I found 2 occurrences where the second wheel was on the same number (see video minute 13:45). There the handle outside could be moved a bit further with a different sound, the 'click'. Indeed when you look at the inside mechanism this is what you see: the 3rd wheel has an 'open gate', so the latch slides in, and at the same time the 2nd wheel has an 'open gate' to allow for the latch to slide in. The latch than hits the 1st wheel after some movement and provides the click sound.

Hi, thanks! The diameters of the gate wheels are about 60% of the largest diameter of the external dial.
What happens when theres a difrerence of 4 for all false gates, so its impossible to differentiate what the 3rd gate is?

Frank, I watched your video and gained a bit of insight. I have a really old Sentry Safe, same type as the one shown in the video. I received it with the door locked open and was able to figure out the combination. From what I could figure it is a four digit combo. I was able to work it many times to be able to open and felt comfortable enough to close and lock it. Now I can't get it open again. I have the numbers for each tumbler but now I am wondering if they may be out of order. When I was testing I did the combo to what I figured out might work, but now am wondering if I got the rotation directions wrong. It seemed to need to have the dial roll back to zero for the handle to rotate when I was working it. I don't seem to be able to find any consistent consensus on what directions to rotate and how many times for each number to make it work again. Am I missing something? Thanks.
Hi Seneca, thanks for asking.
What seems odd to me is the four digits. What I would expect is three digits + the turn back of the dial (to zero?), making it 'four' positions. The newer type of dials have this extra turn, as the connection between the dial and the latch is decoupled to protect it from the approach I showed in the video. I advise you to search for how to dial combination video's from Sentry Safe, to see how this works. Then you can try your combination(s). If that doesn't work, do the same starting in the opposite direction, but keep the last turn (unlocking the latch) the same.

Wait I'm confused how you got the first 2 numbers. I thought when you used the handle click method, you got 22-26 anf 14-17.
I thought that meant the number had to be somewhere between those numbers, so how did you get 41 for the second number when you had 14-17 written down?
Hi Hingle, good question, as I did not clarify how I got to the second number.
I first made this list of all possible numbers for position 1 an 2 (middle of 22-26, middle of 14-17I found 12 possible options with the handle click. I could exclude one of those 12, as I identified the 3rd number. With the remaining numbers I tried several combinations 'at random', varying number 1 and 2 until I found number 2.

I have the same exact safe cemented in my house. the home owner gave us two possible codes and neither worked. I found this video and was excited to see there may be a way to crack this using the gate discovery method you present.
I ended up finding what I believed to be 12 gates, used the middle number in each gate, and eventually came up with a excel spreadsheet list of 122 possible combinations. Unfortunately I couldn't get the safe open still. wondering what I could have possibly done wrong? I guess its possible I didn't get the gates correct and thus the combination list was not accurate. My hand was getting tired from resetting the dial each try and maybe that ended up
The interesting thing is that one of the codes on my spreadsheet was the number the previous home owner provided to us...strange.
I'd pay a locksmith to get this open if the safe can still be used....maybe I'll try this entire process again and see if that works at all.
I'm determined to get this safe open. I went through the dial 3 times carefully and recorded the number ranges and have my spreadsheet..so far no luck....starting to think either the safe is broken, or maybe I'm dialing the codes incorrectly.

Hi, Frank i have a old Canon combo lever /key safe. That i used the key only to open and lock it. Well i went to far and it activated the combo and i forgot it. Any tips or will this method work? NEED HELP BAD.

No it wont work on a cannon safe the dial is attached to a cam on that safe not the 3rd wheel and the handle is separate from the lock.
So Do spin till i hear the first gate and push the handle down,to get the numbers? then continue spinning till I get the next numbers?
Would it be possible to just knock out the hinge bolts (like a bedroom door) and walk the door open?
Nope. The bolts are protected and cannot be reached.
Is there a certain website that would generate all of the posible combonations?

There are 12 false gates, but 13 holes for that drive pin in wheel 3.
So I wonder if that gives options of offsetting the pickup of wheel 2 and therefor making wheel 2 have more than 12 possible gate positions. Wheel 1 I am assuming to be identical to wheel 2, so would have an offset of the 12 positions, but fixed at factory.

I need help! My dad passed away last January some important documents are inside a Sentrysafe model MODEL SFW123CS, I have the combination but every time I try to open it the lock gets stuck when I turn it to set it to the next number, I tried spraying it with WD40 to loosen it but it still gets stuck, the lock doesn't glide smoothly as it should, is there something else I could try?

I am sorry to hear your dad passed away. My condolences.
It is difficult to assess what is causing the lock dial to get stuck, without seeing and hearing it. Great that you used WP40 to loosen it up. I am afraid the WD40 does not reach the inside mechanism, where I assume the problem will be. With the mechanical design in mind, I imagine that the wheel or wheels hit the locking latch creating this stuck effect. To fix that, make sure you fully lift the handle (with some force) before you start dialing your number. Also, check if you can keep rotating the dial clockwise for more than four revolutions and then counterclockwise more than four. Regardless of the combination, you should be able to keep turning infinitely in both directions. If this works, then go back to three revolutions clockwise until the first number, go counterclockwise and pass the second number once, hit the number, and turn clockwise to the third number. Put the safe on its back. And spray worh wd-40. On its back so the WD soaks downward into and under the dial. Also turn the dial while you spray the WD. Be generous. The locking mechanism is in a separate compartment than what's inside.

This "direct Dial" safe is why they came out with the new improved versions that separate the door locking mechanism from the combination locking mechanism which only blocks the door mechanism from turning and the combination box has the block bolt retraction build into the combination box that is retracted by the dial itself.

Hi, thanks for the video I'll try it on my Dad's old safe. It has ULTIMATE written on the top right corner, and the handle doesn't move at all after entering the combination (it's so stiff I feel it was manufactured that way). The dial locks in after entering the combination but just won't open.
Good luck Dimitri! Maybe the handle mechanism rusted stuck. Or the Ultimate is a newer version where the latch is moved with a last turn on the dial. Which would be harder to crack. Have fun with this challenge.

Hi Jake, lightly, just rest your hand on the handle, no additional force. Of course, it depends on how old, lubricated / dry / rusty the mechanism is. Hope this helps.

I don't fully understand. Why must the 1st and 2nd number be located only at the middle between the false gate bumps on the 3rd guard wheel? Couldn't the 1st and 2nd numbers be set to a number that was a number at the top of a bump on the 3rd wheel or at the actual gate on the 3rd wheel?
Hi, thanks for your question.
The 1st could certainly be the same number as the actual gate of the 3rd. 2nd and 3rd cannot be the same due to mechanical limitations. 1st and 2nd cannot be the same either.
The reason to use the middle between the bumps is just a tolerance thing. There is some room (play) in the gate and the chance to hit right increases if you optimize for maximum play on both sides.

@@frankrood8464 I ran though the list of all possible combination numbers but my list excluded the 3rd gate number as a possibility for gates 1 or 2. I didn't have any luck opening the Sentry safe. I'll add in the 3rd gate number as a possible candidate for the 1st wheel gate number in my list of possible combinations and it try again.
Sentry Safe Combination Number rules:
1st gate number could be the same as the 3rd gate number
2nd gate number cannot be the same as the 3rd gate number
1st gate number and 2nd gate number cannot be the same number
These Sentry Safe model numbers are covered by the same owner's manual so I assume the lock mechanisms on these models are all the same:
1230, 1250
1310, 1330, 1380
1400, 2200, 2230, 2280

@@gmp3244 No, I gave up after trying for a long time. I still have the safe and I'll start all over and try again. It's frustrating after trying for so long. One of more of the numbers must be something else than the number at the middle of the gate.
I called sentry and they gave me the combo but it's not correct. I am trying to open a safe that belonged to my husband who passed at the beginning of the year. I know there is valuable stuff in there and I knew that the combination I paid $35 for was not correct. I clearly remember the second number was 2. The person at sentry told me the combination could not be changed. I have a code that my husband wrote in code for the code. lol Do you follow that sequence? He has letters separated by carets and we can't figure it out. I don't care if someone destroys the thing I just need what's inside. I don't have the kind of patients you have. But I did watch the entire video.

With the help of others in this comment section I came to the conclusion that the factory default for turning the dial is starting left (counterclockwise). Is your model safe the same as in the video? Then I recommend you turn left-right- left. So: 3 or more full turns left until the 1st number. Then turn right, pass the 2nd number once and turn to the 2nd number. Then turn left until the 3rd number. Hope this helps.
Mine looks exactly the same, only it's black. Do you know if the original code can be changed? Since I don't know the code I called Sentry and they gave me the original code, for $35. When I asked if the code can be changed to something else, I know the second number of the code was a 2, I was told no. It's still sitting in the basement with who knows what inside, waiting for someone to bust it open. Thanks for your reply.
@@jazzbea6243 Hi, yes the original code can be changed. I did changed the code for this video and restored for the owner. For example, if you check around 18:00 minutes you can see a screw in one of the holes. The screw can be put in another hole, changing the second and the first number. De third number can also be changed, although if I remember well it can only be changed 180 degrees (at best 3 x 90 degrees). So all three numbers can be different from the original. However, the design limits the number of combinations. I hope you can get it open. Keep up your spirit. The biggest frustration is just before the breakthrough.
where is you get 82 For your first number ?. thats not on the video ?
Hi Greg, thanks for your question. You are correct, I didn't show that. 82 was one of the numbers of the 12 numbers I found by checking out the false gates like shown at 5:30 to 6:10 . My assumption was that 7,5 would be the gate in wheel 3, and the other numbers of the list of 12 should be either the gate of wheel 1 or wheel 2. When I figured out that wheel 2 could be 41,5 ('click' at 14:20) I only had to test 10 different numbers for wheel 1, including 82 which was the correct one.

Hi Charles, great that you know the last number. For the first and second try these in all combinations : 0, 8, 10, 16.5, 20, 24.5, 30, 32, 36, 41, 49, 50, 57.5, 66, 70, 80, 82, 91.5. Keep the third the same. Avoid same number for a sequence. So not: 8-8-20 (double 8).

My brother in law loaned me his safe door, to practice with. It's just a round section, for an old floor safe. It has 4 numbers. The way the fence, or latch is designed, it's at an angle, so you can only figure out the last two numbers. There is no way for it to touch the first two wheels, to hear it hit a gate. You can feel and hear, when it catches the next wheel, but there are no false gates. You just have to know where to stop for the first two numbers. Since it turns so many times, to get the next wheel's gate to line up, it always pushes the latch out of the way, and never comes close to the gates, on the first two wheels.

@@frankrood8464 It is just the lockimg mechanism. It isn't on the safe. It's just the door. It seems impossible to hear or feel the the firs two number. From feel and noise, I can figure out the 4th and 3rd numbers. Since it rotates so many times to catch the next dial, the other number dials never touch the gate or fence. So I believe it is a well designed safe lock. You would have to drill a hole to see from the front.
I just physically busted one of these open. White powder launched out of it. What is it?

Thanks for the reply. My father just picked up this same safe from my grandmother's it was unlocked until my nephew closed it lol there's nothing in it but we would still like to be able to use it. Maybe a lock smith I tried what you did. Didn't work for me lol

Nobody wants to pay me to do this anymore. they just want me to drill and repair it. I think part of the problem is safes are so cheap now and can be bought anywhere now.

Thanks for your question. Which test are you referring to? I would expect when you try find the possible gates, you end up with less than 100 numbers, in my case I ended up with 12 numbers.

@@jakeblack212 If you have the first 2 numbers for the first 2 gates, then you can indeed try out 100 different positions for the 3rd gate. Which is doable. Probably you'll find the right position before you tried all 100.

Hi Mr. Awesome. You could try it yourself, by using the video as a guide. Or you could try to find a local locksmith or lockpicking enthousiast to help you out. There are more people like me, who see this as a nice challenge.

@@mr.awesome7789 Great! That limits the number of combinations. Now try figure out all other possible positions (list of twelve. Minute. 5:28.
Then try all combinations for position 1 and 2 while varying the numbers from the list of twelve, of course keep the 3rd the same (your known number). Position 1-2 cannot be the same, so you can exclude that combination. Same for 2-3. Minute 8:50.

if they wouldnt have had the false gates, it would be more secure. With the false gates as you explained it was only 144 combinations. If there were no gates you could find the last number with 100% certainty but it would leave the other two wheels at 10000 combinations. In other words, their 'security" did exactly the opposite.

If you get bored of trying the correct combo there is a reverse combo that will open the safe same fixed gates just reversed. Just sayn

You also didnt show how you come uo with 41.5 /7.5/82 bc yiu didnt get that combo by searching the gates like you showed in the beginning. Becuse all of the safes stoo on those same flase gates you showed in the begging. So you either new the combo alredy or found it in a different way that you didnt show
mine won't open the handle is loose but the combo is correct, guess I'm screwed
Hi John, that's bad news. I guess the handle is still attached, correct? If you look at minute 17:28 you can see the handle is attached to the mechanism with one nut. That's probably loose. What you could try is to tighten that nut again with the handle on the outside. Turn handle down (counterclockwise), pull handle hard towards yourself and turn clockwise. Keep torsion on the combination dial while you do this. Repeat 10-20 times. Maybe this will tighten the nut again. Then you can use the handle again like it's supposed to. Small chance, but worth a try. Good luck.
@@frankrood8464 Handle is stuck in the down position though. Can't move it back up more than 1 inch.
@@Qwijebo HI John, an inch is about the normal stroke when the safe is closed. Hard to guess what is wrong.

My condolences.
What you could try is start the other way around, e.g. 1st left, 2nd right, 3rd left turn OR 1st right, 2nd left, 3rd right.
Make sure when turning the consecutive numbers not to overshoot, so move the dial slowly towards the number.
If all fails see if you can find a lockpicking enthousiast, engineer or locksmith. She/he can what the video if needed I try to open your safe.
