Is Project Horizon DELAYED? Alton Towers News Update
Vložit
- čas přidán 29. 11. 2023
- In November 2022 Alton Towers applied for planning permission to build a HUGE new indoor ride on an area of the park not used for over 30 years. The application was approved in February 2023 and construction was expected to start in the Spring this year, however surprisingly, it didn't. In this video I take another look at the plans for what is expected to be an indoor roller coaster, along with talking about why this project could be delayed!

Completely agree with you, if a year delay means more permanent flats, I'm all for it. No need to rush the opening
Definitely. Also it gives them time to make sure it’s perfect!
I agree Shawn Alton towers need to sort the flat ride situation out. Look forward to a new type of blackhole ride. So delaying it to get it right or to sort out the flat rides out would be better. Love all you mugs by the way.
Hopefully with more colour added into the park and the theming that is severely lacking @@ThemeParkWorldwide
Couldn't agree more, Shawn. I've commented before that I thought Towers should delay the indoor coaster and in the 2024 season prioritise Park TLC, install new, quality flat rides and incorporate theming into them, as well as invest in their events programme. I'd be happy with that 😀
We would be very happy to see this!
Assuming a delay is imminent, it is definitely true the park need to do some massive improvements throughout. Towers was looking very run down this year.
Definitely
The black hole was the first big rollercoaster I went on prior to that the runnaway mine train would have been the most thrilling one I had done. My Dad pushed me to go on it and was so pleased he did what a memory and the love of rollercoasters really grew. Also Alton towers gave me my first inversion with...yes, corkscrew 😊
Black Hole was such a great ride!
Change of focus from Merlin regarding Alton towers, Thorpe Park is going to be the flagship theme park in the UK. Alton will get more family rides to attract the whole family, I wont be surprised when horizon is announced as a trackless “shooter” dark ride.. Galactica will get a rebrand before this breaks ground
It’ll be interesting to see, however with the size of this building, it’s looking highly likely to be a coaster!
Source?
thorpes always been the thrill capital, but even with hyperia altons always going to be the biggest in the country for now
Alton will always be no1
A smart move by Merlin would've been a multi-construction contract for Hyperia and Horizon. Getting a better rate for both by giving it to the same company. So perhaps when they finish down at Hyperia, they'll be packing up and heading North to start Horizon.
Maybe they just want the spotlight to be on the new nemesis and give it the props it deserves considering it is one of the most iconic coasters in the uk and this retracking is a big moment in its history, but I reckon maybe it’s because they wanna do updates around the park in close season which is more likely
I hope it doesn't get delayed 😊🤞 however you do raise some interesting points to get important park issues addressed first then focus on project horizon
As always we’ll be covering the project very closely!
Drink a shot everytime Shawn says 'however'
Came here to say this 😂🙌🏻
I definitely imagine it was delayed to get the permanent flats funded, because they very much seemed to hear about not wanting the retro squad to stay AT ALL, even winding them down. That being said, I could very well see them begin work soon, probably after the new year. Giving themselves more time to create the space so when it is ready to be cleared, they've already shifted the area to make starting to break ground much easier.
Once you have planning permission you normally have 3 years to start to building work but if you don’t start you will have to go back and get permission again but it’s normally very easy to planning permission granted again.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the coming months and if anything starts on site!
Agree with all the points, the other thing to consider is that when you look at the plans they are digging down a significant way (potentially more with the height restriction) so they could have done some ground testing and found an issue, subsoil may not be supportive enough so perhaps they have had to go back and redesign things like piling or something like that. Or like we had with a new housing estate near us they found the land was contaminated to had to treat that first before being able to build on it
I wouldn’t mind for it to be delayed a few years if we get more flat rides and general area refreshes
Definitely. That’s what the park needs to be prioritising first.

@@ThemeParkWorldwidehopefully another Christmas special
Great video!
I wonder if it's worth contacting them asking to film the construction officially, like Jack Silkstone is doing for Exodus!
Alton Towers like to keep things as hidden and secret as possible usually so I highly doubt it!
There's alot of speculation as to what will be inside this building.I don't think this will be anything anybody is expecting. One of the many things that makes Towers the best park in the country is they do things a little different.Expect the unexpected!!
I’d definitely love to see more changes and a bit of a clean up of the park to push this back a year. It just looked so tired this year. On another note, are you able to use chest mounted GoPros at Hyde park WW?
Definitely. We used our chest mount at Winter Wonderland earlier this month and had no issues with that!
I Hope this doesn't get delayed because I am LITERALLY looking forward to seeing Project Horizon
I wonder if budget envelopes/cycles came in to play here. ….. especially if planning permissions have timeframes of a few years.
Whatever is occurring….. as long as the outcome is a significant increase in presentation throughout the park and SW9 is within the not too distant future.
Nice update TPW🎢
Possibly so!
I'm quite happy to have Project Horizon delayed if it means efforts go towards flats and general up keep and get the park firing on all cylinders.
100%
I think this is a positive in my mind they have looked at the skyride, hex and the new flats needed and worked out it would be better to spend the money put aside for the new coaster in 2024 to flat rides and upkeep.
My prediction is hex and the skyride will be refursbished for 2024 opening and the 2 flat rides open by the summer of 2024 and potentially 1 more over the winter of 24/25.
Definitely. Would be very happy to see new flats coming in before another major coaster!
Hmmmmmm you've raised a good point, personally i want something else track (rollercoaster) based from my favourite theme park. Im not against a few flats however.....in fact they have become an integral part of a theme park visit lately.
Is it too much to hope for a spiral lift hill like black hole 🤣🤣🤣
It’s possible that funding is the issue. Since they applied for planning there’s been big increases in overheads and cost to build, plus interest rate increases meaning the cost to finance the project will have gone up considerably. They might be banking on rates dropping a bit and hoping that a good ‘24 will put some cash in the bank. Interesting project though.
Possibly so!
I'll say it again. I think that rather large 'Theming element' arch that sticks out at the front will carry track.
I would much rather they rethemed X Sector for 2025 and advertised that instead. A couple of new flat rides, clean up the Smiler, update Oblivion queue line and station, maybe even something to replace the arcade / old oblivion shop. That and general deep cleaning of the whole park over this closed season and the next, then bring in the new area and new ride for 2026. They could then look at updating Dark Forest, Towers Street and the monorail ahead of the 50th anniversary in 2030.
That would be great!
Shawn what's your favourite quote on the channel for me it's gotta be 'please be aware you are on a ride designed for 4 year olds that looks like a little red steam train'
I was chatting to some guys on the Nemesis construction site and they told me they’re starting work once Nemesis is built 😊
Wouldn’t be surprised if another application goes in to modify the building. Maybe a higher capacity coaster?
Great news update as always Shawn
Thanks!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide you’re welcome
Look at Thorpe took them a year to get planning permission kept bumping into herdle after herdle. Maybe they did do it as they new they may have problems.
I think if they are going for the indoor RMC, like hinted or joked about, they are struggeling with noise reduction. but what about an AT version of Fire in the Hole?
Would love to see something like that. I’m sure it’ll have a good show element to it!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide And I feel like AT is the right family park that has both the thrills and family rides for everybody. So a good mix of darkride and coaster would be a great fit.
Personal if I was in charge off alton Towers I would put a pause on building a new coaster and spend the money on bringing in new flat rides and sorting out the rides they have and giving the park a really good tidy up. Places like tower street really do need a lot off money and maybe a re-theming.
We completely agree with this!
Way I see it is Hyperia had so many struggles and delays and is still opening in 2024 which is the earliest they said it would, so I could still see Horizon opening for 2025. BUT it wouldn’t surprise me if it was 2026
2024 is going to be amazing! If it means other improvements across the park including new flats, I’d much rather this be delayed!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide that’s very true
Congrats on 369k subscribers
Thank you!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide your welcome!
Personaly I think towers will do what they did with nemesis release something and then build really fast but I don't know
It’ll be interesting to see as this is quite a large construction project with the area it’s located in!
Could always put in a mutli dimension stand up flying spinning coaster into it. Could do well for the park i recon
It would be great!
Brilliant video
Thank you!
I think they may have had to switch manufacturers or a delay since intamin (the likely manufacturer) will be working on another major project aka.Falcon's Flihht
Possibly so!
Definitely agree the flat rides would be a must to help reduce Queue times on the coasters with the retro squad gone it is a area that needs sorting sooner rather than later plus if it means Bring in Ripsaw 2 the return of the master of the flats damn right lets do it then a lovely new indoor coaster year after exciting times at Alton towers are coming 😁😁😁
I think they need a good clean up of the park, re theme and just some tower love and care. Getting there ops and cutting down their doen time before they even start to build a new attraction.
That’s very true!
Was 1 of the staff during winter work to “warm up” black hole on the day of its special event closing day.
That’s amazing. It was a great ride!
They should just shut the park through the entirety of 2024 and focus on quality of life changes, but sadly we know they'd never do that
They could easily do a huge amount of work over winter if they wanted to, so we’ll see what happens!
I completely forgot about this project with Hyperia and Nemesis being built for next year
If projects have to be delayed, its what it is at the end of the day and to be honest, now that the Retro Squad have now finally yes, left the park. Hoping Towers will bring in some new permanent flats, would be good to have instead of the temporary versions which are designed only for amusement parks or travelling parks. Would be good if on this coaster if it is a coaster? It comes speeding out of building on structure at the entrance? Would be an epic interaction I think with guests stepping into area & queuing up? Maybe this is what might be happening or something like this? Why they may have to take it maybe lower below treeline? To hide it all? By the way, how deep is maximum they can go down? Is there a limit? Same depth as Oblivion? The Smiler or same depth as Alton Gardens? Because you never know? Could be an underground coaster? Might be bigger underground? With shops, entrance, queue line, preshow if has one all built on various levels? Be quite cool whatever it is, think it maybe a water coaster as thats something they haven't yet had in park, think that would be an epic new addition. Think aswell realistically 2026 opening now especially with what you mentioned, but at the end of the day got Nemesis for next year, flat rides potentially for 2025 opening, maybe could even be for 2027? Especially if something happens to Galactica? Cause who knows? Something may happen to that yet? If not 2028? But nice update, really interesting and enjoyed the update. Cheers 😀👍 (Sorry for long paragraph)
Must be quite a project for it to take almost 2 years. I mean for example Hyperia has basically been half built and it’s only been about 3 months since they started construction on the coaster.
A big part of it would be clearing the land and creating the building itself. The area is a complete mess at the moment!
If Alton does add permanent flat rides, this might put the park into a redemption arc
Merlins should join cedar fair and 6 flags the budgets would be huge
Uk needs dome coverings
The last thing the park needs is a new coaster , they need to prioritise flat rides , theming and getting hex and sky ride back up and running
Hopefully we’ll see all of this happen first before moving forward with this project!
Will you be giving us any updates on Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Dreamland in Margate
There’s no updates to share on either park at the moment unfortunately
We should say No to natural or horror theming now, bright colours needed!
Will this end up like the plans to build the 200ft wooden coaster across the valley?
Possibly so!
Rita and th13teen are more or less where the corkscrew used to be and that was the first coaster I ever when on all those years ago would of been around 1989-1990, I'm going back years now they used to have a big slide up in that area it was the first year I took my girlfriend there, you just rode it down on a mat it was blue, yellow and red, it was for the younger kids also the mouse as you said and the beast which kind of was like the black hole but outside........also do you remember the t.v program called (hold tight) and the giant snakes and ladder building that was all in that area behind the towers with the corkscrew....... that's going back some years now lol......
Great video update Shawn from Alton Towers applied for planning permission to build a HUGE new indoor ride on an area of the park not used for over 30 years. keep news the good videos coming on the channel, Shawn. 😀👍
I agree with that flat rides should be priority as they are removing the retro squad, putting more flats in will help through put in the park
Definitely
maybe alton towers are focusing on nemesis and forbidden Valley and the rest of the park
Possibly so! I’d be happy to see that!
I’m looking forward to Nemesis being reopen, next year but I mustn’t get excited as I will see what my mum, outreach boss called Amy and dad say about me going there due to the current cost of fuel, etc as I’m going to Turkey with my mum and dad in April, possibly Edinburgh with my mum and finally The Isle Of Wight with my mum and dad but hopefully Amy will have newish staff who are confident of roller coasters in 2024. Anyhow, it has been taking a long time has Project Horizon. Incidentally, is it snowing where you are as it is where I am a bit.
Have a great time!
On Saturday the 2nd December, you should go to the Trafford centre to check out their Christmas fun fair. This time, can you take other theme park vloggers with you? You can take parkspill, digital Dan, thrill riders and Jack silkstone. You can also bring lift hills and thrills and his friends ash and Jim buy only so we can all tease them because lift hills and thrills is rubbish and mean so it would be funny to get revenge.
NEW RIDES THEME PARKS ARE GONNA BE AMAZING IN 2024 I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT YESR
2024 is going to be epic!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide heck yeah
Im exited
Could you do an updated top 10 coasters please love the videos a lot !!
Thanks for your suggestion!
Yessss we need this!
Word of the day 'However'
Thanks for watching however
As long as we are teased for new flats to be added later on next year and a big tease if this coaster is delayed until 2026 and the public know i am fine with it.
Are you doing a Christmas Eve Special/Quiz as usual? Thanks 🤞
We are indeed! 7pm Christmas Eve!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide oh it’s such a hoot, We all love it! Thanks TPW.
Like the Hoodie!
Thanks!
I agree as well, delaying to make things better is the right choice for Alton Towers.
Do ATs need planning permission to put in a permanent flat ride, if its replacing a retro squad for eg?
It depends on the location in the park
@ThemeParkWorldwide so could they (however unlikely) have permanent flats in the 3 or 4 locations now unused where the reto squad was, by opening 2024?
Could this what the alton towers market team meant when John Burton said in the video outside oblivion drop "Nothing on the horizon " they probably realise that the park is looking bit tired in areas so they probably decided to delay project horizon. Just my own speculation
Possibly so. I feel like there’s priorities that need sorting out in other areas first!
I completely agree with you shawn and Charlotte
I'd say there are a few higher priorities before another coaster
More Permanent Flat Rides on empty sites
A Flume or Shoot the Chute that gets you wet
Bringing closed attractions back into use such as the 4D cinema, Nickelodeon Outta Control, Hex and Skyride
Investing in a Shuttle Bus service from local train stations to the park (in this day and age of sustainability, it is a no brainer)
Focusing on the guest experience a lot better i.e. queues, transparency, operations
Project Horizon will be amazing when it opens and will be worth the wait, hoping the delay will allow them to look at some of these 😀
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There’s definitely other priorities needed first!
I never really saw it for 2025... Seemed way too fast at the time... Flats first.
..
So no RMC Wild Moose?
Anything is possible if it fits in that building!
You might find that all the builders are busy working on Hyperia at the moment, and will start once that project is more or less finished.
You do realise both nemesis and hyperia were being built at the same time, they can have two teams on two projects
Due to the lesson ending early, the new ride was postponed.
I hope it isn’t delayed because Alton towers needs a new coaster
They do however I think there’s no other things I would prioritise first!
👍
Is Hex still there?
It’s having some major work done to be back open in 2024
Hi shawn are we getting planet coaster videos again any time soon
We have no plans to at the moment
How has it been a year since we found out about project horizon? How. Just how.
Time goes so fast!
😰I hope it’s not delayed..
Let’s see what happens! Stay tuned for the latest updates!
is this the first SW to have two project names?
We’ve seen other project names previously however they are mostly used behind the scenes
They were to focused on nemesis thats why
That is a completely separate project!
I’m not really that bothered about it, people say Alton towers desperately need a new roller coaster but out of all the uk parks they need one the least
Definitely. Would rather see invest elsewhere at the moment!
I be surprised if it a big dark ride who said it’s a rollercoaster also if it’s not opening till 2025 surely ground work should be done in 2024
The timeframe is based on what was mentioned in the application
Money is short for most, at present.
Might of been delayed because of nemesis and they wanted to focus on that
Nemesis was always planned for 2024 though!
Happy to delay this indefinitely for 2 reasons - firstly as you said they need to sort out priorities. The park is an absolute mess. The worst I’ve seen it since the 80’s, maybe worse. There’s lots of maintenance and clean up needs done in addition to needing half a dozen flat rides, a theatre, and better retail and food. So many unused spaces. Secondly, I think this project is a massive waste of that space in Coaster Corner. They could do all sorts of things that area including making it a whole new land of indoor attractions (not coasters). But we’ll see.
Definitely. We’ll see what happens!
We need the flume back ❤🐤
We miss it so much!
However
However! 😂
If the building gets built there, where are they going to put all their rubbish in the future 😂😂
The plan was to relocate that area to somewhere else back of house
The park is in desperate need of investment all over. This would be the correct decision to delay the project for a year or even two. AT is not short on rollercoasters.
Definitely
Oh no , delayed !? Noooooo
It seems likely
So many amazing points made here. But I think this is Bianca thinking very smartly. Already she’s impressed me with her work this year. I think this has been delayed to focus on a tidy up and flat rides first, before a wider park expansion. It’s a wise decision. I’m sure this was discussed earlier than we think internally. But I think flat rides are first, then horizon is next.
Definitely. It seems likely that this could be the case!
Uk theme parks are miles behind
We do have some catching up to do!
I reckon they've delayed it because galactica is getting a big retheme for 2025
Anything is possible!
I just feel like the people who live next to Alton Towers probably call their neighbors if they shoot off fireworks. Truly the biggest Karens in the universe. I mean complaining about noise issues from an INDOOR attraction? Lord they must be miserable people.
They also don’t realise how much tourism and employment it brings to the area!
and the fact Alton Towers was there before they were! Biting the hand that feeds them
It’s the U.K. !!!!!! Of course it’s delayed and over budget
Interesting however I can't see past how many times you said however ,however theres still interesting parts to the video however you did say it a lot
Thanks for watching however

I can imagine alot of Karen's live around alton towers
Unfortunately many of the locals don’t support the park

@@ThemeParkWorldwide prob get a tour
Prob do a tour of region
Do you think this could be a mack spinner, but a tight dark ride variant with special effects. Maybe AT's first Mack. Not sure if the building is large enough.
Nah it wouldn't be big enough for a spinner
It possibly could be, however I’m leaning more towards a show style coaster!
Then a re theme of dungeons back to free and a new log flume type ride in the yesrs after
I’d love to see that happen!
Pushed back to 2026. New flats next year and 2025 .....
That would be wonderful if so!
