  • Enjoy this endearing snapshot of a very junior Maasai shepherd-in-the-making.
Maasai roots, tradition, and history are fiercely guarded and deeply entrenched in northern, central, and southern Kenya, as well as in northern Tanzania.
The Maasai speak their own language known as, “Maa” (also referred to as Maasai language).
As I drove east from the Kilimanjaro area to the safari areas of the Manyara Region, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park, my eyes greedily feasted upon a stunning array of thousands of beautifully coloured shuka-clad Maasai.
My videographer and her daughter both speak Swahili and while some Maasai speak Swahili, some elders, those who have not been educated in non-Maasai schools, and young children may only speak the Maa language.
In speaking to this child’s mother and father they were able to communicate in Swahili but of their seven-year-old son, they said he did not understand.
No children were harmed in the making of this video and the elders were supportive. We were so very pleased to see this young warrior sporting an ear-to-ear grin when presented with a few food items that he seemed to really treasure.
African culture, Tanzanian culture, Maasai culture.
