  • I never thought I’d be one of “those” people (those women) who obsessed over their hair-but “hold my beer”…Here I am in yet another country, with yet another hairstyle, and yet another locking technique to show!
The first clip is the finished style front view, but don’t miss the last shot which is the finished style at the back of my head. I absolutely flipped when I saw the “bow” he put on the job-a good handle to yank me by to get my attention!
In the west, we have a Starbucks or a cannabis store on every block. In Africa, there is at least one hair salon on every block! Oh, and they all do “Black hair”-hahaha!!
Here, I really pull back the veil. “Surgery” is done on my hair. Locs are cut from one location and moved and sewn into other locations. The rolling method of re-locking hair is illustrated so completely that I think anyone should be able to lock hair after watching this video.
One’s country of origin or chosen country, linguistic background, accents, and pronunciation, are truly a trippy thing. For the hour I sat in the chair, I called the loctician “Roger” at least 10 times. Coming from Canada, “Roger,” of course, is a name very familiar to me. But…when I was leaving the loc shop, the loctician showed me his Instagram page and I had to laugh. His name is “Wahjah” and his shop is called “Wajah’s Most Wanted”. (You can find this magician on Dar Es Salaam Street in Moshi-Kilimanjaro, Tanzania).
I’ve sat in a lot of salon chairs but this shop had the best play list I’ve ever heard anywhere in life!
You’ll hear lots of Swahili being spoken. Similar to the “hair locking for dummies” instruction you’ll be privy to, anyone who is reasonably intelligent should also be able to speak Swahili at a conversational level after watching this vid.
If you guessed that sleeping on my back is a bit dicey, you’re correct. But this sick style is worth any sleeping discomfort that it may occasion. All of this for 25 000 Tanzanian shillings, equivalent to $13.12 CAD, $9.91 USD!! And y’all were wondering why I am singing and smiling so much in this video…
