This is one of the most IMPORTANT lessons on youtube. 20 mins of mind blowing knowledge.
Wow thanks! Glad you liked it!
this has helped alot in understanding how 2 use the shapes in the caged approach... now to try and apply it to these old fingers... thanx Brett !!
Been playing for years and this has helped me so much. I’ve been stuck in the standard pentatonic. Thanks stache you’re the best been watching you for years learnt most of my Jimi stuff from you!!
Awesome! Thanks for hanging in there with me! Lots more coming soon!
Thank you for this great video. I have been watching " how to play guitar solo videos" for years, but never could understand the concept until now. Look forward to more of yours. You are a great teacher.
Awesome! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
5:15 you hit the nail on the head here. Incredible how easy it is once you use the CAGED system to see how your favourite guitar player chooses the licks they play. Very good lesson!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this lesson! I have struggled to make sense of playing scales over chords for a very long time. This video had made complete sense of everything. You have a great way of delivering a point across unlike the other 3 videos I've watched. Thanks!
Thanks man! Glad to hear the video helped you out!
Your the best my friend. I love the way you explain the guitar lesson. There is a lot of years of explanation and understanding in that.
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for checking out the videos!
This really helps me break things down so I can understand and start breaking away from running up an down scales hoping to make something sound good.
You got this! Thanks for tuning in!
This lesson really clicked for me. I've been working with Triad shapes and this has helped me to visualize those shapes and find new ways to move through them! Thanks for sharing.
Sure thing! Glad to help!
Thank you Pappa. I already knew your videos but now I returned to them heavily. You know how to rock. And by the way. love you guitar sound. I intend to replace my bridge humbucker in my HSS strat for a weaker ( clearer one) just because I watched the video about your gear.
Awesome sound.
This is what I've been looking for! A lot of information out there on the CAGED system but this one shows how to use it. Thank you!
Oh just wait! Much more to come! Thanks for watching!
I've always felt like your lessons were just above my play grade but I would watch anyway. Sometimes down the road something might click with me. Today you really connected the dots with seeing the CAGED chord in the pentatonic scale. Being melodic just became an obtainable option. Thank you
Way to go! I knew you could do it! It's a whole new world you are about to enter, hang on for the ride it's a good one!
Pretty sure it's the A Major Pentatonic scale!
That is the "box 1" shape of the F# minor pentatonic scale. That is also the A major pentatonic scale that would fit over the "A" and "G" shaped chords in CAGED.
You're right, that is the A major pentatonic that fits over an "E" shaped chord. F# minor and A major share the same notes.. The shape you linked is also the F# minor pentatonic shape that fits over the "D" chord, or what's called position 2 or box 2. It all about what you consider to be the root of the scale.
I think you're right, but most of the time people just play all the notes in the box. He started on the 6th of the Amajor scale.
Wow. AMAZING video! The way you explained Arpeggios/CAGED and how they link to Pentatonic scales is so clear. Thanks for this video Bret! I agree with a previous comment: 20 mins of mind blowing knowledge!
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for checking it out!
Brett ,thanks so much for free lessons! So nice to have intermediate lessons ,very helpful, thanks Brett.Merci pour la belle leçon . à bientôt.
Sure thing! Thanks for always checking them out!
I can honestly say I’ve progressed further watching your videos than anyone else on CZcams, and I’ve been watching for a few years now, when ever I’m in a rut I try something new and I’m now learning caged and triads to help my scales sound more melodic, and yet again papastache has pulled it out the bag, keep up the great work, and keep on rocking \m/.
Wow man thanks! Means a lot! Thanks for checking out the vids!
Brett, This lesson is huge! I play Sax 40 years + and just picked up Guitar and this channel is insanely helpful
Awesome man! Glad it helped you out! Man I need to get some sax phrasing into my playing!
yes! I feel the same way everyone else thanking you for the lightbulb moment! and what sucks is it happened on a long drive to work and I'm itching to get my hands on a geetar! thanks again!
Haha! Gives you something to look forward to when you get home! Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
I'm so grateful for CZcams guitar teachers, specifically like you. I can play the Hendrix style licks now after practicing it for a couple hours! Thanks for providing the last puzzle piece for my fretboard realization!! I'd love to see more intermediate concepts/playing styles to help me expand my understanding and repertoire.
That is awesome! Thanks for checking out the videos! If you want to take things further I have an entire course on it called Hendrix Unleashed. Full deep dive!
You are the best at explaining the important things. I watched hundreds of videos on the subject and none of them were as clear; most guys on CZcams show off in order to sell something; you are the opposite plus you have a genuine positive energy... Love your channel.
Wow thanks so much! Glad you like the vids!
The way you explained is so clearly and slowly. Thank you for awesome lesson!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
The best guitar teacher on the internet, by far. Thank you SO much Brett!
Wow, thanks! Thanks for checking out the video!
Holy hump. Mind-blown to say the least. This video is one of the best I have ever seen. The amount of concept followed by practical samples is exactly what is helpful to be able to understand the why of how things work, which allows me to understand and modify to suit my own playing preferences. Extremely well done, sir.
Thanks! Glad you liked it and it helped you out! I aim to please haha! Share it with friends if you think it will help them as well! Thanks for watching!
I’ve heard this exact lesson so many times before, but I’ve never seen or heard this explained like this nor this well. Excellent, thank you!!!🙏
Wow awesome! Glad it worked for ya!
You remind me to somebody who play guitar like you when I started learning to play guitar sometimes in 1990. He moved house to another town before I completed the whole lesson he taught me. After he left I stopped to play melodically. Instead I was more into shredding and went like a speed demon when it came to soloing. Now everything has changed. I put musical aspects forward and do soloing for what it is called for - and what you do in the video is taking me to further musical exploration. Good Job.
Awesome! Sounds like my path as well. Thanks for watching!
Some beautiful sounds coming from your fingers. I love your lessons chap, and always learn something
Awesome! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I know my pentatonics all over the neck but didn't know about transferring chord shapes with that mindset. You just blew my mind! I'm gonna go jam. Thanks!
You are welcome! It's the good stuff! Have fun! Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks. I've seen this concept before but didn't understand. Now I get it! That's a big thing. Suddenly I see how chord shapes relate to some of the pentatonic patterns and how you can add parts of the chords (arpeggios) to the pentatonics. You said it just right for me to finally hear it!
Awesome! Way to go!!!
Dude, I cannot thank you enough, this lesson was such an epiphany to me. HUGE thanks from Costa Rica!!!! Love your playing!
Awesome! Love to hear that! Glad it helped you out!
very good. love this lesson. knew most but still found something new. thanks a lot.

Great advice from a great player and dude.
I learned it years ago but I've learned something from Brett watching this that I didn't really think about before. Very grateful for the share.
Thanks man! Glad you liked it!
Hands down one of the best instructors around, transparent musicianship. Thanks man 👍🏼
Wow thanks Paul! Glad you like the videos!
I learn a lot of scales, chord, how to arpegiate and don't know how I can solo melodicly but now i know how to solo. thank so much, Papastache.
You are welcome! Thanks so much for checking it out!
I remember years ago watching your lesson on Red House and getting past the intro and quitting because I thought it was just too complex. Many years later, I'm only now really getting into music theory and guitar theory and I'm having a blast! Learning scales was fine and good but you really helped me put all these scales to use! Thanks from a long time viewer in South Africa! 😁🙌
Awesome to hear! Thanks for hangin around all these years! Glad its all coming together for ya!
My playing has improved so much after watching your videos. The Caged system has really helped and Done wonders for me. Thanks Man 🎸🤘🏻
Sweet, glad I could help! You are welcome! Thanks for tuning in!
This is by far the best lesson on how the CAGED system works, blended with scales
Dude get his CAGED course. Worth every penny!

I am sure this will help in my phrasing. I get this theory and instead of trying to make scales melodic, this worked right away. Can't say thank you enough. I subbed. You got my attention !
Sure thing! Thanks for the sub! Thanks for watching!
One of your best Papa, thanks mate. 👌
Thanks! People seem to really like this one, I'll have to do more of them! Thanks for tuning in!
You sir, are a beautiful person and soul. I found you when looking for Tim Pierce. Keep on keeping on. Love
Thanks! Glad you think so. Have a good one and thanks for watching!
I love this vid. I already am a pianist and am very familiar with scales and arpeggios, inversions, number system, etc but I appreciate how you do an amazing job covering the basic fundamentals while also helping us with the fretboard and caged shapes etc it really is a great pace you use to teach and don't waste any time on anything while also properly explaining things. Its great for anyone whether you are new to the instrument or new to soloing or just starting off learning music. This is the vid is great for anyone learning the guitar. Great and efficient vid
Wow, thanks man! Glad you liked it! Thanks for checking it out!
Great food for thought... Thanks for sharing.
Sure thing! Glad to help!
It's taken me 3.5 years of noodling to understand what your talking about. This just put me one step closer. Been watching your videos since I started back up learning.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely GREAT guitar playing Brett!!! Thanks for sharing the wealth!
Peace man,
Dave in the Adirondacks
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Greatness. Thanks.
That..made a lot of things fall into place that I just could not get to fit together before. When you talked about the arpeggios - a hell of a lot of stuff clicked. Lovely playing and damn cool guitar too :) Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Your videos are helpful, Mr Papa! I've been a song player on the guitar for about twenty years. During the pandemic, I started learning scales and the caged system. I now have a firm understanding of how the scales all connect and why they are what they are. You help translate that understanding into music!
And by the way, I just bought a Slash Signature Les Paul 2021! Three guitars now. On my way!
Awesome to hear! So glad it helped!
Brilliant!
Thanks!
I've been noodling in and out of the First (Minor)/ Fifth (Major) position of the pentatonic scale for a few months now; trying to map things out, focus on the landing on root notes, but I felt like I hit a wall. I started searching and it lead me to the world of arpeggios. I could see somewhat on how that could apply but it wasn't clear until I stumbled upon your video. This will help me find more notes outside of the pentatonic scale that I could use, to sound better within the progression of the song. Thank you
Awesome man! Glad it helped you out! More coming soon!
It's good to have this explained, great stuff
Thanks!
Brett... Brilliant think I'm on the cus of finally how it all works and plays together... Thank you 🤘
Sweet!
great stuff...... you think like an artist with three colors and turn them into masterpieces..... and more..... wow.....xoxo
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for checking it out!

Thank you Brett I'm starting to understand it now slowly. Your a fantastic teacher 👏
Thanks! You are welcome Michael!
Holy crap! I think I just had a light bulb moment and it feels real good! Thanks papastache102.
this was very helpful. as I've always been in shredder mode and always wondered how these guys think when playing a bluesy idea and it's coming together and making me sound more mature in my licks . I like this approach .and the video you made with Tim pierce helped as well when he explains how he thinks when playing this way . very cool
Awesome! Glad the video helped you out!
Very useful! "Chord shapes within the scale" is a key idea. And oh damn that is some sweet tone...
It's where it's at! Thanks, glad you like the tone! It's a great amp!

Hey Brett, I've been playing all my life, so I'm pretty far past this stuff - but I do want to say after watching this video that you have done a really exceptional job of explaining it in ways a beginner should easily grasp. You're a natural teacher, man. Well done, good on ya, and best wishes for the future. OH, btw - experienced or not, I'm jealous of your GORGEOUS tone on this video!!! Dude!!! Could you explain it (the amp design, setup, etc)? Students, sit up straight! This guy is great teacher! (full disclaimer: I have no idea who Brett is, I just stumbled on this video)
Haha, thanks so much! I'm just plugged straight into a Friedman Small Box and have a Strymon Flint and Line 6 Echo Park in the loop.
a very helpful lesson. thanks a lot. and a great sound also !!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for tuning in!
