Should have given some love to the Ty France trade, that's my bad! But as I mentioned, there's over 120 trades to go through, lol. Hope you guys enjoyed!
That’s probably one of the most impactful trades tbh and the Matt brash trade
Ty France trade probably his biggest win
Padres are still feeling that loss to this day
Yeah, I was shocked that you didn't mention that lmao. That's been a massive trade for the team, especially with France becoming one of the best first baseman in the league. I think you were pretty fair overall in this video though, even if I think you may have undersold the value that a guy like Marco has had with the team. He was genuinely one of the most valuable pitchers in the AL by fWAR for several years, and he's become one of the main leaders of the team.
I was coming to comment on this right after finishing the video. Great recap on the Dipoto era though, always love seeing any kind of Mariners coverage, we sorta get forgotten up here in the corner, especially when we never make the playoffs
Dipoto is like every person to play an EA Sports game
Just trace for everyone lmao no development needed
Or out of the park baseball
🤣🤣🤣
Bro for real. I'm a mariners fan, I've always liked his deals on paper. Thinking, "That's what I'd do in the game for sure, potential b+" lol
Most of us love him here in Seattle
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Ty France trade at the 2020 deadline. That might be his best trade ever
People outside of Seattle still don't know about Ty France. Kinda funny.
@@NerdPowah i think almost every person who currently watches baseball knows about ty france.
@@NerdPowah every baseball fan knows who ty france is
@@yungtittyboy60 Well clearly Jolly Olive doesn't know who he is...
Idk, Haniger was a good trade too.
Part of the struggle as a Mariner fan is watching everyone who was absolutely awful when they played in Seattle suddenly become amazing as soon as we let them go or trade them. /r/FormerMs exists for a reason
The worst one was way back when they traded Adam Jones for Eric Bedard
@@JohnsonSaUceZach yep I was just coming here to say Jones.
Tyler Anderson says hi
@@JohnsonSaUceZach I raise you the Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb trade
@James Black I try to forget about that one
Dipoto is “That guy” in your fantasy league.
Now that his career is nearly over, I have one last chance to tell my favorite Cano story:
Jack Z the Mariners' GM heard that the best offer for Cano was $220 million, so he called Brody VW and countered with $240 million, which Cano signed for.
...except, the team that had offered $220 million was the Mariners.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Did this really happen?
@@PopOutPaulie lol no
@@seankiesling2054 I was about to say 🤣
Just cus his career is over doesn't mean u can't make ur joke again
Why would you not be able to tell that fake story when his career is finally over
Omitting the Nola/Adams/Altavilla for Trammell/France/Muñoz/Torrens trade is crazy to me lol. That trade closed a lot of wounds left by earlier ones imo. I’m not sure if Dipoto will be “the guy” to get the M’s to the promised land when all is said and done, but he’s certainly done a great job of building up a foundation and deserves to at least see that process through
We STOLE that trade. For once the Ms benefitted from another teams ignorance. See y'all at the world series go Ms!
I trust Dipoto because the last couple seasons he's shown we're ready to start competing and has been a lot smarter with his moves, hope he's the one that takes us to the promise land
Great video, but I think you forgot arguably the most important and best trade Jerry made, sending a 30 year old, league average catcher, Austin Nola and two struggling relievers to San Diego for Ty France, who's becoming one of the best hitters in baseball, Andres Munoz, a young, hard throwing bullpen arm, Luis Torrens, who serves as solid catcher depth, and Taylor Trammell, a young prospect still capable of becoming a solid MLB contributor. That trade would've been a fleece for France alone, but adding all those other guys makes it one of the biggest steals across the league in recent memory.
Not anymore
As an Astros fan I have watched the Mariners journey. I actually respect Dipoto for effectively tearing down a team that had no chance of a championship, and slowly building them. I now see them as on the upswing and as a real threat to my Astros in the next few years. I would be excited if I was an M's fan
I just want this 21 year drought to end... I was 6 when we last made the playoffs, and now I'm 27. I don't even care if we make the playoffs and get swept by the Yankees in the alds. I just want us to be good, all we've known is pain
It feels like it’s the fans fault. You can’t clap, smile, and act like it’s all about the fun down 17-1 and get anywhere. Bring out the drunks that boo and throw beer. They suck, but they seem to be necessary. Look at Philly and how great the got once the avg number of felons in the stands increased. Or the Yankees in recent years when their crowd became “higher class” due to ticket prices. Their success was lukewarm just like the enthusiasm. Look at this year, already like 3 beer throwing incidents and they are 35-15. sounds retarded I know but there is something to it.
There’s a picture of me 3 years old me at an 01 playoff game that I have no recollection of I too just want it to end,
Mariners fan for my entire 38 yrs of life.the amount of great players we had and let go..
As a Twins fan, you don't want to be just good enough to get into the playoffs only to get swept by the Yankees and every other MLB playoff contender. They get our hopes up and get embarrassed every time.
I mean no Ty France trade being mentioned just makes this an incomplete video
Awesome video jolly. Would love one on Farhan Zaidi and his knack of picking up useful players for nothing
As an M's fan, buying player's jerseys has always been a challenge. Thanks Dipoto. 😒
Just buy an Ichiro jersey and wear it forever.
@@mikemiken1963 yes
Yeah go with the typical Griffey/ichiro/hernandez
Yea tell me about it.
I have a Ben Gamel jersey soooo yeah
Thanks for putting the time in to do the video. A few comments from an M's fan:
I was surprised it wasn't mentioned, but Dipoto has had a lot of success trading with the Padres. Ty France, Luis Torrens, Andres Munoz, Adam Frazier (current slow start aside), etc
While technically not a direct player for player trade, Dipoto traded assets in 2017 to stockpile International bonus pool money in an effort to go after Shohei Ohtani. The money instead was used to sign arguably their most valuable current player (Julio Rodriguez) and also their top remaining minors prospect (Noelvi Marte).
Ketel Marte had a very good rookie season, playing at a 3.7 WAR pace, and had already evident elite contact talent when they traded him (after a down year that followed). M's still won the trade though, especially when you consider that Segura was traded basically straight up for Crawford (the other guys were just pieces thrown in to make the money work out). IMO you have to add Crawford's wins to that trade too. If you do, it's a big win for the Mariners.
The Mariners are a cursed franchise with the current longest playoff drought in the 4 major sports (immediately following a historic 116 win season) and an epic history of long struggling players instantly getting right after leaving the city. Even an anonymous Mariners player said as much recently. I liked Logan Morrison and Adrian Beltre and wasn't surprised when they improved after.
But one guy that very much did surprise me was Chris Taylor. He had been with the Mariners at the big league level for THREE YEARS and had a career 71 OPS+ with us. One of those years was an amazing 26 OPS+ season. He was actively killing our team. That he was instantly great elsewhere is just Seattle sports in a nutshell.
Everything here is perfectly said. Frankly I think this video could probably use a re-upload with the continued trade tree of these trades included. (with Crawford being the big one). It falls just short of telling the whole story of the last 7 years.
Amen to that. This is what it means to be a Mariners fan. Pain, pain, and sorrow - interspersed with fleeting moments of pure joy.
Now I’d rather have Julio Cruz than Shoei Ohtani, but I was crushed when Shoei snubbed the M’s.
I still think chris Taylor is not it.
The Dee Gordon trade included $1M in international bonus money, giving them the most in the league at the same time a certain Japanese pitcher was posted.
There was also a straight swap of Kyle Seager for Austin Riley that got nixed due to the pandemic.
Is there a source for the Seager/Riley debacle? Cause that would’ve been crazy!
Man I love Kyle to death but having Austin Riley would've been an absolute game changer
@@thedugoutdiscussion2799 checked but could only find a few where they talked about a trade but nothing really came out of it.
As a Braves fan fucking thankful that one didn’t happen as Segar retired after last season and Riley absolutely has been electric the past season and a half
@@rogregg29445 he wouldn’t have retired if he was traded as his team option became a player option if he got traded.
This video was great! Would love to see your take on the trades the pirates have made in their rebuild, and if you think they’re building towards success or more disappointment
Summary: Dipoto trades a lot and the Rays' front office is full of savage badasses
As a long time Seattle fan, thanks... I think. The Graveman deal was fine, but it sure didn't seem like it at the time
Astros fleeced the Mariners. You forgot to mention they got Rafael Montero in the graveman deal. He’s been elite for the Astros so far this season
I went to the game before the graveman trade and it was against the Astros. We came from behind 7-0 and we won off of a grand slam in the 8th to make it 11-8. That was up to that point the best game I've ever been to. I heard the next day that graveman was traded and I was actually very sad and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Almost like a romantic break up lol. I felt a lot better about the trade when Abraham Toro actually hit a grand slam off of Graveman.
JollyOlive you did well to put emphasis on the frustration and anger on the graveman trade. It was gut wrenching.
I was at that game too, best seats of my life best game of my life. What a roller coaster 24 hours with finding out about that trade the next day haha. I did really end up liking toro though
@@iank9650 Me too I was there! Such a cool game

As a mariners fan we say trust in Jerry.
Eff Mike Stanton tho
No I don't. fire him
@@booce6969 Now that I can get behind. I suspect Stanton is behind a lot of the cheapness of the current team.
@@dicktipton5912 horrible take
Man Jerry wants Toro to be a core guy along with Guys like France,JP,Haniger, andJulio. He just needs to put up the avg! His 9th inning Hrs are clutch! Rooting for Toro!
This isn't just DiPoto. Previous GM's have worked the same "magic" just in lower volumes.
There is something weird about how so many players get worse when they arrive in Seattle and/or better when they leave.
It's like there's this dark PNW rain cloud perpetually hanging over the entire history franchise and the sun only briefly broke through 1995-2002.
It's called poor management and coaching. Something they haven't fixed and Dipoto only made worse by just cleaning house and hiring his buddies. Servais has been okay, Edgar was nice for a stint but otherwise just complete dukey.
Great video. Julio Rodriguez *is* the best young player in the game. Head and shoulders above guys like Torkelson and Witt Jr. It isn't even close.
Wait this isn't the Dorktown video-
I do like how aggressive Dipoto gets but I think he needs to wait and see how these prospects develop.
THE PROBLEM WITH DIPOTO IS
HE IS A FORMER PLAYER.
PLAYERS JUST THINK ABOUT $$
DIPOTO SPEND $$$ 4 PLAYERS
BUT NO GOAL TO WIN..
For the most part the blue chip prospects that have come up completely under Jerry (ie weren't drafted under previous management) have stayed put. We'll find out in the next year or two if his rebuild was a success based on the outcomes of the players he's drafted.
This is the 2nd best piece of Mariners content on youtube. Thats....pretty good
I don't think some of Jerry's trades are as egregious as the stats would have us believe. Jerry inherited a pretty difficult situation when he was hired as there were already established vets, expensive contracts, and talented prospects who were way too rushed. Some players, like Brad Miller and Chris Taylor, were not developed well by Jack Z's regime and they weren't going to produce with Seattle. They broke out because they went to other clubs where they could get a second look, advice on adjustments, or just a fresh start. That just wasn't going to happen with Mariners organization, where we are pretty bad at developing hitters. I also don't think retaining Trumbo would have been that helpful, moving to a bambox like Camden Yards will definitely boost your numbers unlike playing in Seattle.
Overall, I think Jerry has done a decent job since he's been here (or current struggles notwithstanding). If you make moves, you'll inevitably miss on some players but that's the name of the game. Fleecing the Mets with the Cano trade and the Padres with the Nola trade more than make up for any misses in my book
Finally a rational take lol. He definitely deserves to see the fruits of his rebuild through, even if it may not be this year, this group of players has a better future ahead of them then almost any other Mariners team.
You forgot that the Astros also acquired Rafa Montero for Toro.
Montero so far in 2022: IP 19 bwar: .7 ERA+ of 827 and a WHIP of .814.
Toro so far in 2022: 135 PA owar 0 OPS+76 OBP .237
I wasn’t sure what to expect but this was a great video! I think your last point is the most prominent, that he’s brought the Ms closer to success than any other point before. Hopefully we can turn this thing around and maybe just maybe get over the hump this season! Go Ms!
One thing that this video failed to mention… in addition to SEA trading Kendall Graveman to the Astros they also traded Rafael Montero in that same deal, who in 25.2 innings with the Astros has only given up 1 ER and has an ERA+ of 1127.
I sort of view his tenure in two parts. Part 1 being with the old and expensive roster where he was sort of patching holes on the fly and try to push to the playoffs vs part 2 where he fully reset and built from the farm system up. I think part 1 was pretty bad but i recognize that the money tied to cano, cruz, seager, and felix was holding back the roster. Obviously only time will tell about this 2nd part, but i feel good about it so far. People seem to be really mad that the M's are struggling this year but i really think their window is open for the new 2-3 years with the core of talent they have. We'll see I guess.
bro went the whole video without mentioning the fleece job for ty france, taylor trammel, anderez munoz, and luis torrens
This man skipped on the Mariners complete fleece from San Diego and getting probably the best first baseman in the Al
The insane thing is that you didn’t get to out any cash in the “one inning league” pot with that sweet catch you had against Love Yas.
I think Kelenic will be a good player but if he doesn’t, the trade will still be fine
Agreed. He just needs to go through his knocks.
He really stinks , at this point it would be a win if he just rakes in AAA. He ain't getting psst the mendoza line in mlb that's for sure.
@@BoleDaPole he’s only 22 my boy
Yeah he has his hot streaks in the majors, just needs to put it in for a full season
As a Mets fan it has worked out fine for them too. Diaz is a really good closer. Steve Cohen has more money than he knows what do with so eating Cano's contract meant nothing to him.
Would love a josh Hamilton video it’s crazy how good he was in his prime
Would've been nice to see how much more he could've done in his career if he didn't lose so much time to injuries and smoking crack.
Great content keep up the great work 👍🏽
As a Mariners fan, you've made me feel a little bit better about Dipoto's tenure... but not much, lol.... thanks!
Love you jolly. Just went to the m’s game last night. Keep an eye out for Kyle Lewis.
He looks back to full form in that home run was a dong shot
He was a Jack Z draft pick
He was Dipoto’s first pick as the Mariners’ GM. The pick they got him at was a result of the 2015 season under Zdurencik
Nola the catcher for Ty France was a steal for Mariners. Lotta bad luck with injuries to Paxton, Smyly, and Kyle Lewis
Love how this video was recommended to me just two days after the Mariners acquired Luis Castillo lol
Criminal to forget the Ty France trade, but this isn't really a trade history of the Seattle Mariners so much as it's a trade history of Jerry Dipoto while with the Seattle Mariners. Jerry's staggering trade frequency notwithstanding, the entire trade history of the Seattle Mariners is significantly more insane, particularly during Bill Bavasi's and, to a lesser extent, Jack Zduriencik's tenures as GM.
Honestly the graveman toro trade was a genius move
These videos are great keep it up
It's almost a bragging right being a Mariners fan my whole life. Almost. Born in 1995 and I was almost named after Edgar but I don't have a clear memory of the playoffs lol
The mariners record on trades is really bad throughout their entire existence. Jack zurendsic and bill bavasi also screwed the team for years. Trading Adam jones for Eric bedard was so dumb.
Oh geeze I forgot about that trade… 😖
And the names of those two GMs will be forever cursed in Seattle.
They made the playoffs and they look like the next up and coming team in my eyes if they can keep it up coming from an Astros fan
All these names from the past, disappearing like tears in the rain... didn't realize just how impactful Trumbo and Miller were after being traded. The WAR exchange numbers are just staggering, feels like this team is always on the wrong side of that. Great video!
I’d love more videos like this going over teams trade histories
A small but important trade he made in 2016 was sending Mike Montgomery to the cubs .
Ive been casually watching the mariners since a kid but I never knew that Dipotos trades were unusually high, I mostly watch Seahawks and just thought thats how baseball was.
Not to mention the Mariners got Ty France, Luis Torrens, Andres Muñoz, and Taylor Trammell in a fleece trade. Those 4 have produced a lot for Seattle, especially France.
Would love to see a Miggy video, love you Jolly!
Huh, it's been a little while since the mariners have featured in a video. We had a few episodes talking about how much we suck many months ago and of course the jon Bois epic and here we are again
3:24 ohh that one hurts
It absolutely does. But in fairness, CT was a middling AAAA player and who would have ever guessed he would turn out to be the super all-star utility player he is now. If Dipoto would have kept him, what are the chances he would have even got a long leash to play(?)
Marco Gonzales is not having a “pretty poor” 2022 wtf are you talking about
Marco has been one of my favorite players since Seattle grabbed him. In the long term he's a great acquisition.
Love the vids jolly but I got to point out you missed the fact that he traded Rafael montero to Houston in the trade as well. And Montero has been Houston’s best reliever this year. Keep up the great work!
As a Mariner fan this video is CRAZY. I had no idea some players like Tyler o Neil were once mariners
Once Lewis, Haniger, Rodriguez & France are healthy this will be the most talented young team in Seattle since the 90s.
Overlooked, since you mentioned the “history“ of insane trades, is what is ranked as one of the worst trades in MLB history which sent Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners from the Red Sox for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek in 1997. By 1999, Heathcliff was gone. In 2004, both Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek would be integral parts of the Red Sox breaking the curse of the Bambino, with Lowe notching wins in the clinching games of the divisional series, AL Championship and World Series. Oh, by the way, there was the 1996 trade sending David Arias to the Minnesota Twins as a player to be named later. He was later named David Ortiz. Thank God for Woody Woodward!
Another under the radar trade made was flipping Omar Narvaez to the Brewers after only one season in Seattle. He struggled mightily in the shortened 2020 season, but became an All-Star in 2021.
Hes great this year too
AAAAAAAAAAGHHHH
Bill Bavasi and Jack Z makes Jerry Dipoto look like a rocket scientist despite Dipoto's mistakes.
All those trades are looking pretty good right now. :)
Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps was a pretty good deal for the Mariners, just ask Frank Costanza.
"What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?" 😁
@@maxfieldnelson it didn't even matter. Yanks still won anyway. :(
The chapters continue to develop, trading for Luis Castillo in exchange for the farm system (Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, etc.), Teoscar Hernandez in exchange for Erik Swanson, and Kolton Wong in exchange for Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro.
The Astros got Rafael Montero in the gravemen trade is has been a top 10 reliever in 2022 and way better than gravemen
I really enjoyed it, if you plan to do another gn can you do Ross atkins
woah woah woah the mets did not 'cut ties' with canos contract, they still have to PAY HIM 50 MILLION, but he doesnt play for them
You Arent playing winning baseball yet?
Mariners: okay ill got win every game.
SO. MANY. TRADES. Gotta love Trader Jerry
You completely missed one of the biggest trades which was the one that gave us Ty France. At least I don't remember you mentioning it, and it's a huge fleece of a trade.
For some reason Dipoto reminds me of the pitchman from those ShamWow commercials from like a decade or so ago.
Ty France trade was huge and you missed it. Overall great vid! Thanks
Not mentioned in the trade to Houston was Rafael Montero who has pitched really well this year 2.03 ERA
I'm kind of confused by the comment that Marco was bad this year. Even at the time that this was published, he had 3.74 Era which isn't amazing but not bad by any means. And he has been even better since.
you CANNOT leave the Ty France trade out of this video
Dipoto looks like Kevin Pereira from Attack of the Show haha
As a Yankee fan I remember being mad about the montero for Pineda trade lol.
"This former Rockies bullpen legend"
Astros also got montero who is the 8th inning guy this year and has been really good.
the 2020 trade deadline deal with the Padres was also a major one
Good video i just hate how you mentioned how bad we got fleeced by the rays but not how bad Dipoto has fleeced the Padres over the last few years
The Tampa Bay antithesis
Thanks to the pandemic and moving away from the Seattle area, I didn't see any games in 2020 or 2021. I finally made a trip back earlier this spring to see a game. The Mariners did not disappoint and provided one the most Ms games ever by losing 9-0 and not even reaching 3rd base during the game. I really felt like I was truly back in Seattle for one night!
I had no idea who any of the players were outside of Mitch Haniger.
can't forget to mention his deals with the padres in 2020. it's given us like half our current active roster
Ain’t no way you did not talk about us fleecing the padres
I think they should have brought back Seager. His numbers with RiSP were incredibly underrated last season.
He retired
As a Mariners fan tbis style of managing is really painful. Its a lot harder to like players when they often only spend a couple years here. Heck Kelnic was a player I really wanted to see succeed and last year when he really came into his own i was thrilled. Now he does'nt play for us. Its brutal
As a Mariners fan I will love this team forever but I just want us to be good again like I just want the pain to end
Graveman trade was a much overhated trade
It really seems like people always forget how good Toro was for a while once he came over here. He cooled off eventually, but he's contributed plenty for us at different points in time (he was starting to heat up again before his recent injury). I understand that the timing was questionable, but it's crazy how many people still act like that was an awful trade.
Exactly it was only half a season of Graveman and toro is a valuable piece for multiple years
This is why we never doubt Jerry 😅
Dipoto is that one guy in the fantasy league that makes 20 trades and finishes 8th
Matt Blake deserves a video on turning bad and mediocre pitchers into studs.
It was fun having Cano and Cruz back to back tho
NGL I love the in depth mariners content but slow it down so my brain can work, you know your stuff but let my brain compute and not go so fast. Love the M's coverage though :D
Did I miss something, or wasn’t Ty France received in a trade with San Diego? One of the most undervalued professional hitters for two seasons now France has been a force in the Mariners lineup, and was received for what? A bag of balls?
If the M's were in any other division Jerry would be considered a genius
You forgot that Montero was part of the graveman trade and he is dominant in the Astros bullpen !
Mariners fan my whole life.38 years..I get sick everytime I talk about the players from the Kingdome to Safeco and beyond..
No mention of Paul Blackburn and Patrick Wisdom! Who are both having pretty good years.
Marco Gonz deal just went towards mariners right after this video was released haha
We're still thanking the M's for giving us Adam Jones for over a decade! Thanks Jolly!
Also thank us for taking Bedard off your hands. Bavasi really got two birds stoned at once there.
